Making Petticoats for Historically Inspired Alice in Wonderland Cosplay |Sewing Victorian Petticoats

  • Petticoats are so so important for achieving that Historically Accurate™ silhouette so this time we're making two! I could probably get away with just making one really big fluffy petticoat if Alice's dress didn't have a high-low hem, but it is so I've made one fluffy petticoat for volume and deception and one for extending the floof all the way to the low part of the hem. This is part seven (!) of my series making Hannah Alexander's Alice in Wonderland design and my research and inspiration are drawn very heavily from mid-Victorian fashion, specifically the 1860s, since that's when Alice in Wonderland was written and what seems to most match Hannah's drawing.

    Now I want to be a jellyfish. Goals. My only roommate is my dog, Faraday, who would like to think he's a hooman and is very vocal. Oooh. I like how you organize things with a label safety pinned to the fabric pile. Nice trick.
    I've been learning the in's and out's of the various vintage presser feet. They got one, the tuckmaster, that's pretty nifty to use. You set the first marker for how big the tuck is. Then you set the second marker for where the foot will tap a fold-line for the next tuck. Not perfect, but it works pretty well.
    The petticoats are lovely. The costume is really coming together. Well done.

      Labeling the piles is super helpful with petticoats and tutus haha otherwise it’s so easy to lose track! That presser foot sounds so useful!! I’m so bad at measuring tucks, every time I think I’ve gotten it right i either end up with not quite enough fabric or they’re the wrong spacing or something haha it’s just always a mess!
      And thank you! I always appreciate your comments!

      @@moth.faerie Right? So many rewatches, but honestly it's nice to watch videos I like over and over again. I was working on a skirt. I just finished it recently. It's now probably one of my favorite items in my wardrobe. It's this nice soft linen fabric that I cut out of an old bedsheet. It has wooden buttons down the front and has enough fabric that it fluffs up when I twirl and is just a couple inches higher than my ankles. Very cottage core.

    2:37 I'm early in the video, so I don't know if this is the real issue or not, but I think it would be good if you had button & loop closures to attach the petticoat to the back of the skirt so that the petticoat doesn't move to the point where it stick out.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 3 lety +3

      Oh that’s a really good idea I’ll have to do that! I meant more that it’ll have to show bc it’s a high low skirt so you’ll kind of be able to see under the skirt if that makes sense? But I was having issues with it shifting around anyways so still very helpful advice, thank you!
