  • Does Islam really allow a man to have up to four wives? It seems that such a practice puts women in a very challenging and difficult position. Is there a specific verse in the Quran about polygamy? Dr. Shabir Ally joins to discuss this further.

Its very crucial to note that before ALLAH (swt) mentions the verse that allows you to have up to 4 wives the verse before talks about doing injustice to orphans and widows!! so it can be more than safe to assume that ALLAH wants men to marry orphans and widows!!! Allah himself says u cant do justice to more than 1 wife so just be content with what u have!!!

You CAN not should marry more than one wife if you fear injustice for the orphans. This is what is stated in the Quran, widows are not stated in that verse.
You can not marry the child, the orphan, no. You should marry his/her mother, which is now a widow, because muslim man have the responsibility to care for their family.
So naturally, by marrying her you HAVE to care for her and her children. That way it is made sure that the orphans and the widows are taken care of.
Back in those days alone mothers with children had it so hard that they basically could not care for themselves. So this was a good solution.
Nowadays, we generally do not fear injustice for widows and orphans because a lot of states have welfare and such and help these people. So they are taken care of and do not necessarily need a man.
So, in todays world, you simply (generally, some countries are exceptions) do not have legitimate reasons to marry more than one wife, and if you do not have a reason than it is illegal to do it.

There is nothing in the Quran that says be content with what you have. You cannot project today's western culture into the Quran. Polygyny did not begin with the Quran. It was practiced long before the Quran was revealed. The Quran just regulates polygyny when marrying the mothers of orphans. The limit of 4 wives at a time is only in terms of marrying to ensure that a man will not be overburdened with the responsibility of taken care of too many orphans at one time. Actually the Quran does not limit the number of wives a man can marry. The Prophet himself actually had 9 wives. Other companions also had more than 4 wives. Remember the Quran also allowed men marry women captives of warfare against the Pagan Quresh tribe.

Your advice should have been, brothers help out the sisters by practicing Sunnah of our prophet scw polygyny.
To illustrate this, we refer to the Qur'anic passage on the subject of polygyny, a text which conveys more than one meaning, as follows 'And if you fear that you may be unable to treat the orphans fairly, then marry of the women who seem good to you, two, three or four. But if you fear that you cannot treat [your co-wives] equitably, then marry only one. . .' (al-Nisa', 4:3). At least three or four meanings are distinguishable in this text which are: first, the legality of marriage, a meaning which is conveyed by the phrase fankihu ma taba lakum min al-nisa' ('marry of the women who seem good to you'); second, limiting polygyny to the maximum of four; third, remaining monogamous if polygyny may be feared to lead to injustice; and fourth, the requirement that orphaned girls must be accorded fair treatment, a meaning which is indicated in the first part of the text. All of these are conveyed in the actual words and sentences of the text. But the first and the last are subsidiary and incidental whereas the second and the third represent the explicit themes and meanings of the text, that is, the 'ibarah al- nass. Limiting polygyny to the maximum of four is the explicit meaning which takes absolute priority over all the implied and incidental meanings that this text might convey.[2. Khallaf, 'Ilm, p. 145.]

I shouldn’t be writing as maybe what I write can be false or misleading and definitely would not like this to be used against me on the day of judgement.
But Shabir Ally has explained this very well in my opinion. He has stated the quranic verse for clarity. When compared to other verses in the Quran, 2, 3 and 4s is a reference to more than one. I do not know if 4 is the maximum or not. From the context of the verse we can also see that multiple marriage is purely conditional(it’s what I believe anyway). A condition is stated before the command is made permissible. Also if you fear injustice then only one. Injustice is a very powerful word. The Islamic religion is based on justice and rights. The problem is we as a Muslim community do not read or apply logic to most things these days, rather chase carnal desires..
(I am not a scholar, this is clearly my opinion. Whatever I have stated is my own. If I have said something wrong, this is not on part of the religion, but my own. I take full responsibility. Allah knows best).

Mullahs disregard the 'if you fear' in the verse. YATAMA means orphans as well as unmarried, divorced or widowed women.
4:3 If you fear that you (the society) will not be able to do justice with the orphans, (as may happen in times of war and political turbulence, the government shall announce a state of Emergency), then, in order to accommodate widows and orphans, men of sound finances and character shall be encouraged to marry among these widows with mutual choice; two, three, and four. But, if you fear that you will not be able to deal justly, then, you must not take additional wives, and may continue with what you already have. This will be more suitable to prevent you from doing injustice and face financial hardship. Love this video, but there’s one major issue that wasn’t talked about which is the issue of whether or not it’s moral or immoral to marry more than one wife in a country that doesn’t legally recognize polygamy. This is important because wives two and on won’t be legally recognized as being married, so they’ll be relegated to a second class status within the legal system and within that marriage. And if wives 2 and on are regulated to a second class status then they’re not being treated fairly, which goes against the Quran commanding husbands to treat their wives fairly. It shouldn’t be permissible to marry more than one person in a country that has made it illegal to marry more than one person.

It is so that every woman can have a stable relationship and family. Islam caters for extreme times as well as otherwise. The Quran actually says if you cannot do justice, then marry only one. So if these men cant do justice then they arent allowed to practice polygyny! No other religion actually has this written command for monogamy. actually, I have learned Quran almost 35 years. I do have the same conclusion that even it is allowed to marry more than one, but it is not recommended. The argument is that, we have to consider whole Quran. In other ayah, it is said that God made human as a weak, also tend to unjust, greedy, miserly, etc. So having said that, I honestly think that what God recommends us to do is to marry one woman. But again, it just a recommendation, not a law.

      I think,
Here normal norm is 1 wife to 1 husband.
Quran 4:20 But if you want to replace one wife with another and you have given one of them a great amount [in gifts], do not take [back] from it anything. Would you take it in injustice and manifest sin?
if there is a calamity in the society and women orphan are helpless, you can marry them to give shelter. [condition in syria]
Quran 4:3 If you fear that you (the society) will not be able to do justice with the
orphans, (as may happen in times of war and political turbulence, the
government shall announce a state of Emergency), then, in order to
accommodate widows and orphans, men of sound finances and
character shall be encouraged to marry among these widows with mutual
choice; two, three, and four. But, if you fear that you will not be able to
deal justly, then, you must not take additional wives. This will be more suitable to prevent you
from doing injustice and face financial hardship.
so if multiple marriage is done just for pleasure and not for sheltering orphans, poor victim women, this may go against the rule. - Allah knows best.

The verse starts by saying marry wives in twos, threes and fours BUT if you can't do justice to them marry only one, so by the order it implies to try and marry 2, 3 or 4 first if you can but if you can't marry only one like a last resort kind of thing. Zakir Naik said it's the only religious book that says marry only one but he conveniently leaves out the above, so really most Muslims should have at least two wives. When brother Shabir said about the tribe it made sense why but it doesn't make sense in todays culture and most are not following it which isn't very devout so I asked before if it should've been in Quran if no one seems to adhere to it. Or should it have been said the other way marry only one but if you need to marry 2, 3 or 4. That way most would've done it correctly but it seems it is not so.

He was polygamous with widows and divorcees to spread Islam and protect them for the last 10 years of his live 3 years (I think) after the death of Khadijah he married again and took Aisha ra for his first wive and after that the other wives

I have to defend the view that polygyny is still acceptable practice today as long as on abuse, or coercion involved.
    1. In times when women numbers exceed men's, e.g. wars, such practice can be fair even in welfare society. Money alone is not always enough.
    2. Most societies, especially western societies, men have multiple relations outnumber men who do not. Considering the second relationship as a marriage would protect women rights and prohibit men from abusing them in a non-committed relationship. This is why multiple relationships in Muslim societies is much less than in western societies.
    3. In traditional societies, elders might try marry their vulnerable widowers to a men they trust even if the men are already married as a way to protect the widowers and the children from dangerous strangers.
    4. In case of infertile women, a second marriage can a convenient option to all parties.
    5. In decent Islamic practice the first wife has the right to prohibit her husband in the marital contract from having a second marriage.

      1. There are actually more men than women in the world, and this includes war zones.
      2. Not all men are adulterous. Those that are looked down upon and women can divorce them. Of course, some women are adulterous, too.
      3. What "dangerous strangers" are you talking about? Surely the onus should be on changing these men's behaviour and ensuring women and children have protection from the law. You shouldn't have to marry just for protection!
      4. I don't think a second marriage would be "a convenient option" for an infertile woman. It's a true insult. If God had meant a couple to have children, it would have happened. Perhaps the woman should be able to marry again if her husband is infertile.
      5. Unfortunately Islam isn't always practised decently. Women often don't have the right to prohibit her husband from marrying again.

Don’t ever think 4 wives being permissible if you cannot treat fairly and in this world, even one wife isn’t being treated fairly at many many occasions. Look back at the main reason why the prophet pbuh had to practice it. Moreover, in his 50 years he dedicated his time to Khadija. Only after the widowed women increased in number it became a thing. Again, context matters. Saying it’s permissible freely without context turns men to animals acting on nothing but lust.

Masha Allah this sister is quite articulate to communicate the basic yet intricate need for society to practice polygamy. Polygamy is actually of benefit to the individuals the family unit the community and a nation.

Islam is always relying their answer in the Bible so that they can hide the false of their doctrine. Abraham had only one wife Sarah but due to the uncircumstances he married a slave woman Hagar (Genesis 16:1-3). Jacob wants only to marry one wife Rachel but Laban deceived him (Genesis 29:25). Although David and Solomon have many wives this is not the will of God (1 Samuel 8:10-19). The will of God is a man should have only one wife (Matthew 19:5-6, Genesis 2:24).

That won't work. Women are created monogamous and since we're the ones that have the babies, it's issues with paternity. Men are polygamous.

@@jonezmontenegro3916 I hope you can afford to buy four houses and provide for four households. As a Muslim, I don't marry more than one, because the conditions and responsibilities are too many. I am already struggling everyday to provide for one wife. If I had four, I would be bancrupt.
