Q&A: Why Did Prophet Muhammad Have So Many Wives? | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • You asked, we answered! "If the Quran allows a Muslim man to marry four wives, why did the Prophet Muhammad have more than four wives?" Dr. Shabir says Quran 4:3 emphasizes doing justice to widows and orphans at a time when a welfare system hadn't been established. He says the verse doesn't rule out the possibility of having more than four wives, though he emphasizes that the optimal choice is to have one wife. He discusses the Prophet's marriages, showing that they were for the sake of political and social good.

Dr. Saffiyah. I am a bit confused. Why should a poor man take on more than 1wife much less more than 4 wives? And if marrying more than one wife was to help widows in the past , then what is the justification today? And what is the justification for marrying young girls who are virgins and thus not widows?

@@piedadunda1647she was around 16 and older and there is arguments like how back in the day they would say 6 or 9 when they mean 16 or 19 also other arguments but even if you dont accept all the arguments for her being older which by the way are a lot from the mathematical argument of ayeasha sister asthma age during hijrah and her death ect you also have to accept the historical fact that back then everyone got married at that age and even recently in history people would get married at that age. It was a different time with different cultures and norms so we gotta look at it from a different perspective. People matured faster back then less distraction a lot less things to worry about and you also had to take on responsibilities at a earlier age. People that grew up in farms mature a lot faster thane kids in cities.

Why does Allah take special interest into the prophets bedroom? Why does the prophet gets revelations that only he could have more than 4 wife's? I can't stop thinking he was a false prophet nothing more than a king saying he is getting these revelations of convenience. When he was attacked by arabs about him marrying his adopted sons wife. Why he gets a revelation to settle that. Why does Allah care about the prophet bedroom. Moses or Jesus did not have this privaledge. Please change my opinion by explaining how I am wrong.

Thanks for this enlightenment Dr Shabir. In my country Malaysia, there seems to be an obsession with the idea of polygamy, and it's often companied by undertones of uncontrollable lust for sexual pleasure. It's really bizarre. It's really such a poor representation of marriage according to Islam and could not be further from what Dr. Shabir is saying here, which makes so much more sense and is at least dignified. That's why non-Muslims in my country perceive Muslim men in general as having issues with lust and perversion.

      @Jenice_ru Před 3 měsíci +1

First of all just bc Allah hasn’t allowed.
But if we look from scholars prospects if u get married to 4 men where would u know who’s the baby in ur womb. Would u provide for ur men everything money food etc
Then if u get married to 4 men
For men it is necessary to provide for women (wife’s)in Islam but women are not capable of doing it for the difference of thei body strength productive system and etc then would u be able to provide for ur men! While being pregnant no.
And secondly perspective is that in Islam the Muslims majority of men are less than women , and the reason of it is that men do jihaad in the path of Allah and some of them are martyrs so if the majority of men are few than women that means half of the woman can get married and half of them can’t and it doesn’t make sense . Allah know everything and he knows what’s good and what’s bad so Allah is just and fair in everything he creates he is just with women also so he gives permission for men to marry 4 wife’s ofc if he provides for them equally and raise his children .

At the beginning dr Ally says that the Quranic rule about the maximum number of wives was given by Allah for a specific time/place. This interpretation destroys the claim that the Quran contains teachings for everyone in every time. Besides, polygamy is a pagan practice, condemned in the Torah and in the Gospels.

The Bible doesn't prohibit polygyny. Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon and other prophets had more than one wife. You are ignorant of the meaning of paganism. Paganism is a person who worships more than one God, not marrying more than one wife.

There's any verse in the Bible where God say Davd, Solomon, Abraham who so ever must marry more than one wife if you say polygamy is allowed in the Bible? There's no such a verse. Real Christians go back to the beginning. God created one Man (Adam) and one woman (Eve) after the fall of Adam and Eve people started polygamy by their own will. If God did not punish them that does not make polygamy permitted. The Biggest problem of your Prophet Muhammad was that he couldn't understand the difference between what God said and what Man say @@hassanabdur-rahman1559

    • @marioluigi9599
      @marioluigi9599 Před 8 měsíci +1

That's an interesting thought, but nobody even knows how many wives the prophet really had and all their names. We're talking about something that happened in ancient times. I think a lot of it is hearsay from Arabs who wanted to say the prophet was married to their own tribe
People don't even know how many of these wives he was married to at the same time, so it could have been that he was married to only 4 at a time, although everyone seems to agree that during the lifetime of his first wife, he never married any other (even though he could have done). So that's interesting too. Also, he only had children from his first wife throughout his entire life and today only the descendants of one of his daughters of his first wife survive.
So you should ask if he really had like 10+ wives to sleep with every night... where are all his kids? Sometimes you hear of people nowadays who marry a lot of wives (a lot more than 4) and they always have tons and tons of kids. So whyyyyyyy didn't he have any with any of them? Did he not sleep with them at all? If he did have more than 4 at a time, were they only "so-called wives" for political reasons and not true love marriages like this first wife?

The real question should really be why do you have to marry a widow to support her? And why bother marry a widow with a child if treating them as your own is not allowed. It makes literally no sense. "Muhammad married to protect them or support them", and yet he was responsible for them being widowed or orphaned in the first place, there is no need to marry someone to help them.

The days we live in today are not the same that they lived in…..the world was very different….baby girls were killed at birth or sold as slaves and widows were burnt for being a curse for the husbands death and many other obscene things….unimaginable! How women could have been treated in those day…….if a woman had no husband she was everyone’s property to be abused in every way possible
But if she was married she had someone who took responsibility for her….
      This is my understanding
We live in a western world so it’s not possible to understand the kind of practices that happened back then with women!
I believe that women were given respect and saved from the oppression….
This is my point of view
Even I had the same questions and I wonder why someone would do something like that
But I also realised Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) didn’t live in 2024
The days were dark back then for women!
Some women were burnt alive as witches some women were sold for prostitution
Idk I can’t even imagine the kind of circumstances those women would have lived through
And someone could marry them and save their life
If I was a woman back then
It would be a blessing if someone saved me from such demons and married me
If someone married me as a favour because I would have no choice otherwise but to die or be a slave and lead a miserable life

What if I married 8 wives in the name of peace between families, you wouldnt care since I am still tresspassing what Allah has allowed for me, so is the best example for mankind to transgress Allah? @@gemsbokhtar6861 8 out of 9 wives were old widowed or divorced women. In today's society its very hard for elderly or divorced women with kids to find a new spouse. Men usually want kid-less or young women, even if they're older. Back then it was even worse, as men usually lived a shorter live due to getting into war early or for biological reasons (hard work), while getting married as man was quite a easier task than today, women had quite bad cards.
Each of the Prophet's wives had a different status and family background, although most of them came from noble, political families. I think we can learn from the Prophet's marriage that women, even if they are past their prime or their status, deserve to be married again and not only married to someone who might accept her as she is, but who really take care of her with all heir rights and give her a good treat! And in that he set an example as a prophet, it is also an example for all pious Muslims. Many complain about the number, but I don't know any person on earth who shares his house with two, older, divorced women and takes care of them in a good way. Obviously it seems strange in first stance, but if you get older, marry and understand how a marriage and love is built, you understand what the Prophet Muhammad sallahu alyhi salam actually did was not a easy task. I don't even expect any muslim man of the world to be capable of what he actually did.
And regarding his 9th wife, Ayeisha. Even if some people don't like it, Ayeisha's age is still an uncertain matter. There are quite a few contrasts and I say this after researching for hours and hours. But its certain that like Khadija she might be one, he really loved and where love was a central aspect of their gathering

Zaid was a slave afraid of his master and let his only luck he had to have a free woman for himself!
What do you mean he wasn’t his biological son?
It is even painful for a helpless man, without power whatsoever to see his wife go in the hand of his boss!!!
( broken trust, self pity, self esteem -humiliation. Powerless in front of another man) the way zaid felt and just accept the humiliation, disrespect!!
      Let me ask
You. Can you forgive a friend who take your wife from you?
A friend you respected and trusted??
      Can you???

@@cocoalfaridah5831 i suppose you have no background knowledge on the matter. Zaid is an adopted son amd not a real son. Zaid divorced his wife independent of Muhammad saw and he then married her showing the community that one an adopted son can never be your son and that
to establish the precedent of the Prophet ﷺ marrying the ex-wife of an adopted son who took on the name of a non-biological father (adʿīyāʾ), so that the proscription on this practice could be forever abolished. Concurrently, without a legal heir to his spiritual, political, and material inheritance, the Prophet ﷺ was the final amongst the long chain of prophets. The annulment of adoption and his lack of a biological heir removed any confusion with regards to his inheritance, for now no one could lay claim to prophethood or political authority based on hereditary succession.

He beat Mohd. to it - More wives than Mohd.
Was told about An Indian Muslim king who followed Mohd's footsteps - goggled to find he had scores of concubines He even loved alcohol.( Champagne)...Need to check further..
He liked to see his concubines’ children on his birthday and once he ordered that the garland round the neck of son No 30 be removed and taken to the bazaar after the party and sold for half the price. He loved to drink champagne which tended to be fusty since it was stored under the roof in the blistering heat.
After Independence, the Nizam became even more eccentric, shuffling round the backstreets of Hyderabad in disguise with his trademark muffler round his mouth. At one time, he was supporting as many as 14,200 dependants, most of whom were parasites with no direction in life such as the children of his concubines. An opium addict, he survived on a quota of about 11 grains a day but he also ensured that all the women in his harem were given the same so that everyone could be on a high together.
It was too good to last. The enormous drain on the huge trust funds that he had established exacerbated by the demands of his multitudes of dependants at a time when the Indian government was clamping down firmly on princely incomes brought the old Nizam down to his bony old knees. Many did not believe the old man and laughed when he said that he was broke. Indeed, it was difficult to gauge as to how much of his problem was real and how much they were eccentric ramblings of a wealthy miser.
He became a withdrawn pathetic figure and was well-aware of the humiliation for Hyderabad, which despite its mainly Hindu population had always regarded itself as the leader of Islam. He was reduced to knitting his socks, sleeping on a humble charpoy, surviving on rice and lentils and bargaining with shopkeepers over the price of a soft drink. A pet white goat chewing on a turnip was his steady companion. In 1956, he took the decision to disinherit his decadent eldest son and appointed his grandson, Prince Mukarram Jah as his heir.

      Prophet had many wives,
He used them for his own glorification to access and keep power over all the tribe!
He did not love even one of them..
It is political mariage and exploitation for my own glory!
Muhammad married many wives, others people daughters and made polygamy an important thing but
When Ali decided to take another wife beside fathima he said( not my daughter) he opposed it, he refused it completely!
How many wives did Ali had?
How many co-spouse did fathima had?
Then when one older man wanted to marry fathima he refused he opposed saying ( she is still young) she was 16. Going to 17!
Then when ali who was almost the same age than Fatima ask him about fathima he accepted)
      That is hypocritical !
Bcz he can marry many wives and young Aisha even when abu abjected!
Why did he opposed refused Ali to follow polygamy??
Why did he refused to marry fathima to someone older than her??
Why did umar had to come to always settle his trouble in his household when his women sided each other because of Mary copt!?

Dr. Shabir Ally, in this video you have stated that having 4 wives was based on certain "conditions" at the time of the prophet (exp: muslim men being murdered which gave rise to muslim widows). Wouldn't your statement then contradict the validity of other messages in the Q'uran in regards to how we should live in 2023? In no way am I questioning A'llah. I am questioning the credibility of some of the messages in the Quran and how it maybe applied in todays world since it is taught that what is in the Quran may be applied in any generation of humankind.

Did he just say that the main purpose of allowing multiple wives is for men to take the widows of his fallen comrades? Did Muslim men during Muhammad era really marry multiple wives for this reason? Or was this man just inventing unrelistic new silly excuses? Is the general Muslim community aware of this "justification" thru the centuries before this speaker "revealed" his version of true reason?
Ironically, nobody was allowed to marry Muhammad's own widows. Even if one of them was just 18 years old when Muhammad died. What's up with that?
