I had a dad but he never wore a beard and thus couldn't teach me (though he did have a mustache for a bit before I was born)

By the time you get old enough to grow anything resembling a proper beard... Most guys are about 30... My Dad did have a beard but, to be honest, it never occurred to me to ask him how to manage it... That would have beem pretty funny actually.
....Almost as funnybas when I asked my Mum's new boyfriend if I asked if he minded me calling him Dad... When I was 30. ...His face was priceless, actually thought I was asking for real.
If I got stuck in a deserted island for 5 years, I still wouldn't have a beard like that.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. My 23-year-old son has never trimmed his beard, and he doesn't have a male figure in his life to teach him how. But with this video I think he and I can handle it without having to go to a barber.

Thank you for this! I've been cutting my husband's hair for years, and now he's growing in a thicker beard for the first time. These videos are very helpful so that I can help him clean it up, although he does most of the edging himself. I like being his barber!

Thank you for all these helpful tips. I am 74 and have had a full beard since my Navy days in VietNam leaving in 1971. I’ve struggled to find a practical method for trimming that leaves it looking good. Thanks again.

@@djregisterx7x I dunno about them, but I was shaving my neckline WAY too high, so I had no volume behind the front, so it looked scraggly. If I had a full neck of hair behind it, it would have looked waaaay better.

My beard is nowhere near as full at this, but after I did all of these this is literally the best my beard had looked ever I think. Literally a professional.
I have been growing my first beard ever since January of this year and it was starting to look just like this. I have a very corse beard. It might be painful (emotionally) but get your beard to that 8mo length, and then shave it and start again. It'll grow back bigger and better!

Thanks for the info. I have had a beard for 25 years but I always kept it trimmed short because I never knew how to trim the sides and get rid of the pear shape. I grew it long and used your technique, left the length and saw the instant slimming of my face.

You should do a video addressing how to shape and manage various beards that aren't as full in various places
+1. In particular, the cheeks that lack volume and the moustache that never seems to connect with the beard are the most common ones

when in doubt - grow it out. that helped me, just try to ignore awkward phase and rock what you have
@TheMowens Just trim it in line with or 1mm above the line of your upper lip
@TheMowens use a blowtorch. im not kidding either. no prickly itchy hairs to deal with, but sometimes folk will ask you where the bacon sandwiches are.

I wanted to thank you. So very much. I know you probably won't see this. I grew up without a dad to show my how to tame this wild beast. I assumed I didn't have a beard I could style. I've had a beard since I was 12. I just let it grow. My beard hair grows in 4 different directions depending on where it is at on my face. I've always just took clippers and edged it up. I've worked in construction for most of my life so I didn't really care. When it got long it got cut it. Because it just looked bad. For the first time in my life it looks good long. All I had to use was a razor and some clippers. I gotta use Harry's razors because cheap ones, trimmers, and electric razors just grab and don't cut my coarse hair. I had a flat brush and a comb. (I have been trying to comb and brush my hair into submission for about two years, too embarrassed too actually look up a beard tutorial). I'm so glad I finally did. You really don't know how much I appreciate this. Bless you man. This has been driving me insane.
(The story on why I use Harry's is because when I was in school still I went to shave my face and the blades on the razor broke out of the razor and cut my face open.) It really is that thick and coarse. I feel stupid with this comment, so please understand that I appreciate this so much.

I definitely like this tutorial! I keep a few different beard balms for different types of weather really, the lighter fluffier better in the heat and the waxier variations are better for the winter at least in my beard

Personally, I think shaving the neck is only if you intend to keep a short beard at around this length. Otherwise, all shaving the neck will do is result in constant maintenance and itching. Those neck stubbles will come in and require almost daily trimming, and are in the worst place to have stubble. If a person is growing a longer beard, you don't need to shave the neck, only shape it, when you're at the length you want. Shaping a neck too early can constrict the beard to a non natural shape and make you think you're trimming excess when you're actually trimming your natural shape. This can make the difference between an OK beard and an epic beard.
