I loved the fact he emphasized that different stashes are for different people and that everyone should find what suits them. Sometimes men can be a bit envious of other men's facial hair, but truth is - each to their own. And this video really nicely touches upon that.
Thank you for showing this.
True. But it could be said the mustache is the easiest to grow, so if you can't grow a beard you grow that. and that's sad
@@tomik6537 It’s not lol
i did not know about the moustache wars
bro thinks hes dinaric
How many times has this man sacrificed his beard
Not this time
less than he sacrificed others
Once. He still had his facial hair throughout this whole video. He only sacrificed his beard once, in an earlier video, because he couldn’t cope with his pencil mustache
I wouldn’t call trying out a new style “sacrificing your beard”.
He still has a beard, it’s just a different style.
Lol 😆
That dude at the end was really digging his pencil mustache
The dude is really handsome too.
Esthetically wise, he's got nice facial features. Plus, a full head of hair. I bet he'd look great even going bald.
Yeah it looked great

After getting the Pyramid Pencil, I have this strong motivation to build an underwater city and name it Rapture.

I was not expecting to watch a Masterclass on moustaches today.

Honestly, this was awesome! Exactly what needed to see! The Algorithm is working 😂🤦🏽♀️
I had a pencil mustache in the 90's, when I was in the Navy. In a black and white photo, I looked like a 1920's Sailor. It's a pretty bold style choice and really proves the saying, "Less is more."
Less is more, L Clark takes it in the back door
JK
In the navy huh? And a pencil stache? You were getting passed around a lot
My late mother loved all those actors in the Thirties and Forties who wore pencil mustache, like Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Robert Taylor, and Tyrone Power. it was a nice accent to their appearance.
Really digged this as someone that has a disconnected stache. I liked how thorough the explanations were, but also showed variants to demonstrate there's not just one way to a specific style.
I don't know why i'm watching this as a girl but i find this very relaxing...
Same here sister 😁
Ditto!! I love these videos.
Same girl, same
Same. I'm very drawn to barber vids
I'm watching because I love facial hair and this dude is hot.
Solidly described all the styles in a clear concise manner. Obviously enjoys the beard life. Gives me confidence to try other styles rather than "Hair on face" Ha ha ha. This guy is great.
What style do you have now?

I'm so happy I finally had the guts to grow out my mustache. Been wearing it for about 9months now, and the trimming aspects of it is new territory. Thank you for this video.
im 18, 10 weeks in on the grind. has a disconnected stache, i will stay true to the grind. your comment has inspired me to continue further on. Thank you
Really great explanations and play-by-play by this stylist. More of him please!

We talking about The Austrian painter? AH?
No.
Matty has heard my call for a moustache styling guide! thank you GQ!
I've never been exposed to any kind of professional facial hair shaping technique or advice whatsoever and I feel validated that my choice of shaving my Stache to an extended pencil w/ imperial for my round face and low growth was indeed the correct choice to make.
Such a great teacher, always enjoy your videos Matty.
Anchored Stache is fire 🔥
thats what i try and go for but i don’t grow good chin hair :/
@@nalyk8588 you’ll get there bro give it time. Massage your chin with Jamaican black oil. The massage circulates blood flow to the chin awakening dormant follicles and the oil is supposed to be good for hair growth.
@@mohamedkamara8225 appreciate the advice bro. i’ll have to give it a try
This tutorial is gold! Nice explanations, really enjoyed it, thanks :)
It has taken me 49 years to finally decide to want to grow facial hair. Great advice, great tips, and great video altogether. See you down 'stache alley.
It’s been 4 months… Surely by now Matty has grown enough facial hair to give us another rundown of styles as he shaves it all off!

Would love a part 2 with more stache styles
This is the only content I found that answers my questions about the point of the mustache. Thanks so much!
I had a fun time rocking the clark gable/errol flynn split pyramid style stache. I liked looking at myself in the mirror more than looking at other people at the time haha.
yes this is a godsend!
convinced my husband to grow a mustache but its been looking pretty ragged!
thank you for teaching me how to trim it!
Ur def a keeper
Personally a big fan of the brogue, rocking this style at the mo...
I have a Jason Momoa style beard, I.e. the sides as well as top of chin are thin in terms of follicle volume.
I wonder if you could do a video addressing this style of beard and the best approach to grooming?
This is actually very helpful and I learned a lot!
Indeed
best video for my favorite beardstyle (the beardstache) yet. thx a lot!
So each year I grow out a massive waxed handlebar for a few months, with a Val Kilmer’s Doc Holliday inspired imperial. Any tips on trimming the imperial? I have thick, full facial hair and it’s super difficult to get remotely even.
most likely the trimmer is the Babyliss PRO Gold FX
I was growing beard for last 5 years. And last evening, i decided to shave it. Reason, i was poor in shaping it myself and lost faith in last 6 barbers i've tried. Where are you based? I will grow the beard back and coming to you for shaping! You are so inspiring.
Questions:
1) what style do you recommend for a guy with a narrow face but can still grow a full beard that connects to the mustache?
2) what system to you put in place to insure that your beard lines appear as symmetrical as possible? They can easily fall out of symmetry.
Thanks I’m advance! Great video! And Happy New Year!! 🎊
Good informative video. I'm currently aiming for a King George beard myself which is similar to the presenters style. I have failed when trimming and had to restart several times. Fingers crossed this time

Another girl here mesmerised by all these types of facial hair and their mysterious names. Well, giving them a shape is an art and a know-how.
I can grow a pretty good moustache and beard, so i love these videos.
I am ecstatic to hear that, I am so happy you are able to grow a pretty good moustache and beard. Not only do I love these videos, I love you as well.
Just shaved my beard after finding this video… thanks GQ!!
This was super helpful as I have now found myself with a nice mustache and no idea what to do with it
I like what you did on your own facial hair. However, I like a defined space between the Moustache and the Beard lines - so a small skin space between the corners of the Mouth. It can make the moustache stand out without being tooooo stand out - if that makes sense. Thank you for making time to share your talent
I thing the term you are looking for to describe that shape is "wingtip" the brogue is the 2 small holes next to the 1 larger hole... unless I misunderstood what you were saying... either way... I love your videos!
hey, this was legit a cool video. I randomly dropped here, but it really inspired me to go and trim my stache/beard. I had what Jason had before the shave and went for the anchored stache. though my moustache is a bit thinner.
thanks for the inspiration! been inside the house for months and this video really inspired me to want to have a clean look again. think i'll visit the barber this week.
THANKS!
This is what it's all about
Would love to have a full beard but been rocking the modern chev and anchor for years. Good stuff there.
13:05 Saving for my own personal use. Great tutorial.
A great tutorial and food for thought. Thanks very much.
Tried the pyramid stache but my hair grows in blonde so it was barely visible lol now I rock the anchor 👍
Thank you very much for awesome simple straight edge tips.
Watch this dude every few years when I pivot the look. Clutch every time
I have gone back to this video over the last two years, and still wonder what tools you are using? Especially the trimmer is of interest 😊
Digging that modern horseshoe style. I may need to try that one day!
Tony iommi look
Very nice tutorials full of theory very well explained 👍👌good job
My favs are the brogue and the chevron aka magnum 👌🏻
Of all the men's grooming personalities, I have definitely learned the most on this channel.
I wear the anchored stache, because I haven´t much beard and on my cheeks does nearly grow nothing. This fit´s kinda good to me :)
Me too, it's the only moustache+beard style I can sport, but I'd really love to have a full beard :(
love the ideas, thanks. i have a rounder face and need to def try leaving stubble when i do my goatee.
Hello I have been watch you for a bit here on CZcams. I have never really grow a beard. Besides a goatee. But I am doing a ninety days challenge with myself i am on days 42 . I really enjoy all of your clips. Thanks again. Positive vibes always
This is by far the best beardstache I have ever seen!
Im here for english learning. Clear speech, good vocalization, interesting form and content hahaa. Many thanks mr
Thank you, King.
For sacrificing your beard for us.
So the "imperial" is simply when you combine it with a soul patch?
but soul patch doesnt sound as cool
@@bubrub23 how about "imperial soul patch" for maximum authority as well as chill vibes
Last time I checked the imperial was the same as a handlebar mustache yeah that small batch of hair between the lower lip & chin is identified as a soul patch
I kind of want to learn how to do his hair style now !!
I wish I could grow a full beard, but the best i can do is the anchored stache. (REALLY wishing for full goatee)
Even then - it took a long time of truly ugly growth before the top lip came in looking somewhat presentable.
Personally, I can't stand the Imperial (or as known in Australia - the flavor-saver)
But thank-you for the tips - it'll help the sparse growth I have look that tiny bit better.
thanks for all Your amazing Videos,,what brand trimmer and clippers do u use?
Yooooo thanks for the tutorials
Nice. Thank you! Can’t wait for the soul patch episode. 🙃
OOT. Yup he's Canadian LOL
And I totally recognize that Gastown (Vancouver) storefront. Turns out I got a haircut there about a year ago.
Loved the vid, BUT I do think there is room for debate on how wide you should let the Pencil style. Ofcourse each case is different, but for instance in this last case, I feel the gentleman would get a much better jaw line, cheek bones and overall look if the Pencil had been trimmed slightly closer to the ends of his mouth (less wide).
Best moustache ever: Mike Ratledge of Soft Machine. Perfection!
I think I could trim my beard like this the first time but the trick would be to maintrain these styles on a daily basis without ever messing it up.

Jesus saves all! Repent of your sins, and you will have a friend that endures for eternity!
Yeah. A pencil mustache is particularly difficult to trim yourself. I used to give myself one to go along with my goatee (not a really thin one like Clark Gable's, more like the one shown in this video at the end), but I usually messed it up in some way, so I just stopped trying and now leave it natural height, which looks a bit scruffy in my opinion. I've noticed that a lot of East Asian men basically have natural pencil mustaches and I envy that.
@@MajimaEnterprises I've worn one for four years and the best trick I've found to maintaining the shape is to dip the tip of a dark colouring pencil in water and draw over the moustache hair to create a symmetrical guide. It's almost impossible to mess up then. The pencil ink washes off easily afterwards.
@@MajimaEnterprises It's ironic you say that because some of those guys wished to grow a thick beard.
Thanks for the tips! You really know what you are talking about
Just got rid of my moustache... definitely will be re visiting this video when I grow it backv
Thank you for this fine clip. Have you som info on the Charles Bronson shape for mustache too
i am planning to clean shave and then regrow my beard for my youtube channel! alot of people are asking me to do this! nervous to go back to clean shaven look but trying to gather my strength!!
So awesome!! Truly a talented man! I still sport the goatee mostly... am I waaaay out of style? 50 yr old here with salt n pepper facial hair
any advice on how to trim my moustache for a wider look on my lips? I did it a few times but it was just out of luck. I have decently big lips so its not like theyre small or anything. I just find it better looking with some more width.
Matt- fan of the brogue dude. Good clip
anchor!!!
just wish I wasn't cleaning up the sparse hair on the side. right now that would have come into place. might have to las it and try again next winter.
wow very nice! I just try Style #1 and it`s awesome
Brilliant stuff mate.
I really want a beard, hope it starts growing out properly soon.
He makes it look so easy
Love you vids, yo! I DIY a Brogue per the instructions, but my mustache doesn't grow evenly, one side is a bit thicker than the other. How to thin the slightly fuller side to match the slightly less full opposite side?
the pyramid pencil is so clean.
Fabulous, love your videos. Great explanation and demonstration.
Please, the name of the trimmer you use.
Thank-you
Looks like its' probably the BaBlissPro
I turned 41 years old before i figured out the riddle of stache. Here.... thank you, boss ❤️
I wear an Anchor with faded Kotletts. looks pretty dope, I dont mind my beard not connecting.
Great tips my friend & your 1 cool barber 🤛🏼👏🏼
I’m 23 and love rocking my pyramid pencil!
I would let him style my beard, no problem, but if I do it myself like he did, it will look like I weed wacked my face, lmfao.
The anchored stache is so freaking hot! And yes, you look so much better with the new look. I'm so burnt out with the beard I see nowadays. Bring back the stache and goatee!
Anchored stache looks good
That was awesome! Thanks.
Any recommendations for thin/ patchy beards/mustaches
14:09 that dude is looking like Tony Stark iron man , I mean that beard is kind of giving that vibe
Not sure why I watch this while I’m on chemo but hey don’t judge me😂
Really useful tutorial. I need a lot of practice, though.
I loved the vid, ver educative thank you!
For two years now I sport my signature anchored stache mustache since I have a narrow face shape.
My beard growth isn't that strong so I keep it trimmed down to 4 mm and weirdly enough my upper lip beard grows slower than the rest
What's your insta

Lmao love this video & this helped me out a lot thank you @GQ
The attention to detail for just your ‘Stache is impeccable! “The imperial”??? Am i’m not allowed to say soul patch anymore??
dude been talking about his beard in every video but what he should instead is his hair, that is magnificent.
