- I never thought I'd be reviewing something like this on my channel, but here we go! Today I'm talking about Tyler Childers and reacting to a live performance of his song "Way Of The Triune God". Apparently this style of music is called "neo country" but maybe it's just god old fashioned country music. Let me know what you think!
Here is a link his performance: • Tyler Childers - Way o...

Justin, only you could get from a country riff into 99 Luftballons 🎈 😄
Yep, this song
AaaarrrrgggghhhhhahahahahahahahahahahaaaAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!
Couldn't help singing as soon as he played it lol
Oddly it is kinda neo-traditional country. At least it tells a story anyway.
I was thinking it, then he did it. GLorious.
Tyler Childers is without a doubt one of the best things happening in country music right now, and for a long time. I grew up with this genre and it's so great to see it come to such an incredible place as it has lately. We're living in a beautiful country and all associated genres renaissance.
I grew up with my great grandmother (95 years young and still playing) hosting a local bluegrass festival in our rural Canadian village and can not be more grateful that the tradition of bluegrass and sharing stories through song is thriving in the ultra digital modern age. Art doesn’t die, it adapts. Childers is without a doubt one of the best things happening in music, period.
I am very glad seeing him featured on this channel - great taste as always. Childers rough solo acoustic performances of Nose On The Grindstone and White House Road from his “early phase” are truely something else and blew me away when I listened to them the first time. Revisiting them from time to time gives me some very welcome catharsis.
His stage presence reminds me of “Oh Brother Where Art Thou”, a throw back to radio times when the voice and music were out front and stage craft came later. There’s a world of unique (Watchhouse - formerly known as Mandolin Orange) as well as accessible (Chris Stapleton has been very successful with mainstream hits, the work he does in conjunction with his wife Morgane takes their talents to new heights) true Country. Sadly there are plenty of poseurs and country-popsters.
Tyler is such an amazing musician. And super super humble. Living his best life out in Kentucky.
I'm starting to regret turning on notifications for this channel. I'm now shirking my work duties to watch these when they first come out, instead of waiting until the end of the day to enjoy them like a responsible adult.
Yes! Tyler Childers is a great songwriter too, glad you've found him. Think you'd love some of his earlier work like Nose to the Grind Stone, Little Feathered Indians and Follow You to Virgie. Amazing heart felt lyrics and he's a great guitar player too! House on Fire is also a proper banger with some great hammond organ in it.
It's my 50th birthday today, and Justin, you just gave me the best present ever! Tyler is from eastern Kentucky and my hometown. Tyler is a great artist with many albums under his belt. Many of his songs talk about the area and he is a brilliant country artist that reminds people what country music can be when done well. You should check out his songs "Whitehouse Road", "House Fire", "Bus Route", "Feathered Indians", and "All Your'n". I could go on and on with his many songs and albums. Enjoy your journey with his music and thank you for having an open and inclusive mind to all music.
Happy birthday 🎂
@@user-bj2lu9qt3o Thank you!
Happy birthday from one capricorn to another!
@@TradDad1 Thanks JB!
@@franambrose8667 Capricorns rule! :) Thanks Fran!
I sincerely love that this channel is always introducing me to incredible new music & artists! 🥰💖 Checking out Tyler Childers and Neo-traditional Country right now! And not just to get that “Root, Fifth, Root, Fifth…” ditty out of my head! 😂 Cheers Justin! 🥰
I've only really started getting into country music in the last few years after being averse to it for most of my life, and I'm so glad I've proved my past self wrong because there's some really amazing music out there. Orville Peck in particular is a revelation; Bronco was probably my favourite album from last year and his debut album still is the most extraordinary listen.
I love Orville Peck! 🤩😍
Seconded, would love to see Justin react to something from Bronco
Willi Carlisle is amazing too if you've not heard hime before.
@@creamwobbly Jason and the Scorchers have never received the recognition they deserved, I'm so glad you mentioned them!
Me too lol
Glad you are taking a look at Tyler. I started watching him here on YT when he was a teenager in his living room. It's been a blast to watch his success.
Tyler Childers is such an amazing musician. Love the bluegrass vibe!
Tyler Childers is freaking awesome. Thanks for this one!
Steve Earle has been doing marvellous seriously serious country for nearly 40 years, check him out everyone
In terms of country music I'm totally addicted to Chris Stapleton - his voice and His way of song writing is pure gold. Starting over and Fire away are so good. ♥️
Tyler Childers and Chris Stapleton grew up about 35 mins away from each other here in Kentucky. Lots of talent in these hills
Sturgill Simpson, Stapleton, and Tyler are all SE KY artist
Not generally a country fan but love Tyler Childers. My fav is "Nose to the Grindstone". He often gets lumped into the "Americana" genre bucket because he tends to not appeal to those who are steeped in the modern commercial country sound. Doing Kentucky proud along with Sturgil Simpson and Chris Stapleton.
Came to the comments to recommend the same song... specifically the OurVinyl Sessions version, such a great performance of an awesome song - Tyler performing without the band really lets his voice take centre stage, where it deserves to be.
I'm so glad you did the 99 Luftballons Reference as that's the first thing I heard when you started breaking it down 😂
Please review his latest song, "In Your Love." He and his band stretched themselves into a slightly different shape for that one and it's wonderful. What a great band. The piano in particular reminds me a bit of Van Morrison
Tyler my favorite singer and you Justin just became my favorite music critic. This guy is a well deserving human of all the Glory he recieves.
Awesome Tyler Childers is on your radar. I love his music so much. So many of his songs hit me right the feels. If you like Tyler Childers you need to give Sturgill Simpson a listen.
Beat me to it
Yes...I like this country song, I love when you play and sing...so many things I'm learning in this channel !!!!
I love hearing your descriptions of appreciation of and ability to play and sing various genres of music.
Thank you Justin for introducing me to all of this music that passed me by!
Thanks! More like this please! Good show.
What a great voice, and great song!
So thrilled to see Justin doing Country, been waiting for this since the beginning of the Channel. Think he would absolutely love Jason Isbell and the 400 unit. 🙏
You should do a reaction to Tyler Childers popular live performance of "feathered Indians". It's absolutely biblical
Outlaw country is making some of the most important music there is today. Childers, Simpson, Stapleton, Margo Price, etc...
Listen to Charles Wesley Godwin
Colter Wall!
Yes Sturgill Simpson form sure
@@wedderboom Big fan - though I wish he'd do some of the more of the outlaw stuff again.
I have been playing guitar for 20 years, and only really got into country in the past 3 years. I have honestly learned more about my instrument through playing country music than anything else before. It's such a beautifully expressive and dynamic form of music. NICE ONE!
It derives from the Yodelling of northern European settlers. Hank Williams incorporated it in his singing.
Country Death Song by Violent Femmes uses that bass line...one of my favorites from them.
I love your music sm have a great day
You might dig Sturgill Simpson. Metamodern Sounds in Country Music.
Blowing that through is called, "Keening". It is pure Appalachia, Scots-Irish sound. It is what ya grow up with in these hills. TC is a master of it and a true poet.
Hi Justin! On the topic of country music, I would love to see you react to some of Colter Wall’s music, especially from his first two albums!
Hey big cheese, you good sir, never cease to bring a smile 😃 please don't stop these videos, the dopamine levels are always heightened after these hilarious captures of your pleasantness. Froth ya!
Got giddy at the mention of Suede. Please consider covering them in one of your videos - great band whose early output often gets overlooked, in comparison to their contemporaries.
An absolutely brilliant band and one of my very favourites for the last (almost) 30 years. Their older albums still stand the test of time.
Agreed. I'd like to hear Justin's take on the song Shadow Self from the recent album, Autofiction..
@@juliabobin446 Dog Man Star 💜
Justin, you played 99 Red Balloons awesomely on the acoustic guitar. I liked that!
Tyler's rise has been nothing short of meteoric. Homie has it going.
Loved this....sending to my mom as she's always been a huge fan of country and bluegrass. 👍🏼
I'm going to recommend she looks up Tyler C.
you sir , are brilliant
and to much fun!
Eatin' Big Time!!!!
Goldfingers cover of 99 red balloons has to be one of the best covers I've ever heard it's just so infecting
that cloth is the Kentucky flag , thank you so much for reacting to this i love this song
ALL 👍👍and thxs for riding again Justin
From Prescott AZ
at 5:15 -ish : 99 Red Balloons. also, the Doobie Bros with that breakdown part of Black Water... cheers, Señor Hawkins!
Yes I thought Doobies too!
99 Luftballoons!
Please do a video about Darren Hayes' new music. Love the channel, love you much!
7 Seconds does a great cover... there's a live version on the Walk Together, Rock Together album. ❤️
(just for the record, @Your Wife's Boyfriend doesn't i mean didn't ask) 🫠😉
You are a born entertainer Mr. Hawkins! Keep it up!!
My 21 y/o stepson turned me on to Childers. Really good stuff. True artist following his muse. Check out Ian Noe too ... in a similar vein.
Also. Sturgill Simpson, "Turtles All the Way Down"
It hits a mood for me. Absolutely beautiful. I get the same bittersweet feeling from the Glen Campbell "Gentle on my Mind".
I'm so glad these fellas exist.
Love you are covering Tyler Childers, down here in Austin he’s been the real deal for awhile, Listen to Whitehouse Road, and if you can spare the time, Long Violent History, esp his You Tube monologue about it, Tyler is a superb storyteller with a point of view.
This was fantastic. I grew up on country music, my home town has a massive country music festival that takes place over three days every year. Although I don't really dig on the trad stuff that is around now, I really love alt country artists like Justin Townes Earle (RIP) , Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch and the like. Justin Townes Earle especially went down that bluegrass style and honkey tonk style, which was just excellent to see live. I also love the classics, Dolly Parton,Loretta Lynn, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. I will check this dude out. Thanks Justin. Root, fifth, root, fifth, sixth, seventh!
@Soul of a robot No, I haven't, but I will check them out! Thanks so much for the recommendation!
You should listen to Charley Crockett, an artist here in Austin that’s blowing up, he’s fantastic
@@anthonycowan3481 Will check him out! Thank you for the recommendation!
Struttin’? Thumpasaurus? I 😍a Leslie! This reminds me of Stanley Brothers. Excellent!
This is GOLD!!….Justin never fails to disappoint….Sigh.
Haha, yeah, I thought 99 Red Ballons, too! Brilliant review as usual, thanks, Justin.
5:00 Justin's version of 99 Luftballons is just awesome
Love this Album. Vinyl just arrived last week and it is truly beautiful
The vocal thing you were tslking about. Dwight Yokum does it too.
Must do more Tyler!!!
Love it! Thanks for sharing, I like this. Saludos.
Thanks Luis!
🎶Root, Fifth, Root, Fifth 🎶
Y'all got my toes a tapin' here Justin! Love it ❤❤
We lived in cowboy country for 9 years. I was a union rep for public employees. The smaller the town the more basic the country music and this reminds me of those days...early 90's.
Love bluegrass it's great stuff
@@TROBassGuitar I would wind up in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of cowboys, bikers and a few old roadies playing music next to a giant fire. (I am NOT a musician!) More like jamming. Either way they would take old and new country music, a bit of rock and roll, bluegrass etc mixed. The guitar skill was insane, sustained runs that blew my mind!
The bikers and roadies discovered that using their mechanical skills in wild country was an excellent place to dissappear from their previous...escapades.
I was the little guy who protected these goofballs and the only guy who'd seen the Dead Kennedy's, Grateful Dead, Wagner and Social Distortion. A couple roadies did work on a Who tour.
Hello good sir, just watching your videos, loving it, and seeing as you have a well tuned ear for music and especially guitar “rock” I would love to hear your take on something like Animals as Leaders’ ~the problem with other minds~
Nice. I'd like to learn more about country.
I'm already deeply in love with some stuff..
Dude… this SONG… it’s INCREDIBLE.
Have a listen to Sturgill Simpson. Turtles All The Way Down or his cover of In Bloom (Nirvana). I think you'd enjoy that if you enjoy this. Great singer and great guitarist.
Orville Peck and Serria Ferrell are great country singers as well
I absolutely adore this song!! He moves like an old timer bluegrass musician and he looks extremely confident in what he’s saying. It’s brilliance.
hey justin, fyi still love "stuck in a rut" bro great song, thank you
I’m 58 grew up on Country and this is Country plain and simple
Hi Justin, big fan and loving the YT channel. I’m sure you are currently sharing with me and countless people around the world in the sadness of Jeff Beck’s passing. Was wondering if you ever jammed with him and if and if you were gonna do a video about him on the channel? Would love to hear your thoughts on the legend.
All the best dude ✌️
Love your work, Justin! If you want a recommendation to react to, give Crazy Lixx a listen, they're proper 80s rock. The Power (it's got some whoa whoa bits in it), or Girls of the 80s are definites.
Yeah!!! I can't wait to hear more . If you like Tyler, you might also like Sturgill Simpson, start with any track from Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, after that record his music gets difficult to put in a specific genre but is brilliant as well.
Justin!!! Good day to you😀
The Tyler Childers CZcams rabbit hole is a worthwhile one
He is brilliant ,I'm all yours is fantastic song
Love this dude
Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Drive-by Truckers, and Colter Wall are all highly recommended.
Sturgill Simpson - hell yeah!
Two things, first off - I've been wracking my brains to try and identify that old casio keyboard (looks like one we had at school back in the early 80's), but then, happily listening along you play that earworm and I can't for the life of me remember what it is! For no good reason Christmas Rapping by the Waitresses came to mind and now in my head is a medley that doesn't exist. I can hear the synth sounds of that track but can't hear the lyrics. So I'm off to google 80's records now 😂
The song Whitehouse Road is the consummate Tyler Childers song and what put him on the map. Great stuff.
Would love to hear you critique the brilliance of zeal and ardor ! 👌🏻👌🏻😎
Holy shit, I've been listening to Tyler nonstop lately. Same with Billy Strings.
Justin you should have a listen to Whitehouse Road by Tyler Childers. Really good stuff going on in that, particularly the bass with the tremolo on it. Lots of acoustic performances on youtube but the full effect is the studio version.
Not my thing, but I appreciate the skill and your review. Great stuff, Justin.
The groove is amazing
Love country and folk music! Would you ever make an episode on Seth Lakeman?
I think that Childers is one of the more important singer/songwriters in American music today. Not only does he have an incredible voice, but his lyrical content is as hard hitting as any. I encourage anyone to check out the depth of the subject in "Long Violent History."
Nice 👍one
Was literally going to say the same! Great minds 🙌

Justin, adore your channel! My boyfriend grew up a few miles from where Tyler Childers is from in Kentucky, and learned to hate country music. Please check out Hardy's "The Mockingbird and the Crow". Country metal? Amazing talent and songwriting.
"Some of the more contemporary Country stuff is, uh, what, you know, the pop end of it, hmm, has become has become a parody of Country itself."
Yes. Preach, brother.
He is and you are great
You should check out Samantha Fish(if you haven't already)some great live performances on here.
Loving your work btw.
Tyler and Colter are saving Country.
EARR! Justin (if I may be soo informal:) Love the channel, the music theory, insight and general convo is always great. I was wondering about sharing a link, to a) raise artist awareness and b) have your insightful breakdown. Cheers, Sean. // Elise trouw, see through, live loop at sweetwater

@@supertuscans9512 ere! I get your meaning. Thanks for the reply :)
Brothers Osborne. Magic.😎
Hi Justin, It would be great to see you react to Chris Stapleton’s music - his voice suits both country (in his solo work) & rock with The Jompson Brothers. I have my fingers crossed!🤞
You called out 99 lift balloons but I was hearing black water by the doobie brothers
I am a newer subscriber and I am absolutely loving your personality, insight, and the sprinkling of music theory in every video.
So glad I have found my way to your channel.
I was curious... Every time I have seen you play live it is typically a Les Paul that is your weapon of choice....are there times when you fancy a different guitar for live performances or studio work? What would dictate the switch for you? The sound, pickup configuration, vibe that day?
Tyler Childers is brilliant. Shake the Frost, Nose to the Grindstone and lots of others that are truest authentic country/folk.
You have to check out White House road from Childers, the live version, sooooo damn good!
