- I'm back reminiscing about the magical era of the early naughties. Today we are looking at Puddle of Mudd's hit "She Hates Me" to try and understand how and why it became such a massive hit? Do you know? If so, please enlighten me. Let's go!

One of my cover bands has been doing this song for years. Always goes down well and gets everyone singing. Once, many years ago, we played it at an engagement party (already lol) but, we had been told, the bride to be’s son, who was about 7 or 8 yo at the time loved the song but thought the words were “She needs an x-ray”, so that’s what we sang! 😂
Weird Al wants to know your location
I love the thought of Justin's granny being in the other room, thinking to herself 'Ooh Justin love, please hurry up with your CZcams nonsense, I'm trying to watch 'The Chase' on the telly'
I am honestly just blown away by your ability to instantly play anything after hearing it. It surprises me every time you do that.
oh please. any decent musician does this. Not to take away anything from Justin...
@Thomas Scoville I've never met anyone who is able to hear a song, parse out the notes and then play them immediately upon a first listen. Maybe you hang out with people who are more musically talented than I do. The "oh please" at the start of your comment is quite rude, in my opinion. Good day.
@@MsCruisein Also, you never know if it's really upon a first listen.
U can't he that stupid lol
@@MsCruisein you’ve never met any musicians then. It’s just like speaking if you know music. You hear the note you know the note you know where to play the note. You should see a pianist do it. Plus once you know the route note and you already know how music works you can easily improvising filling other notes that work with it.
Last night we were watching TV and this song came on as the credits rolled. My husband said ‘who does this song’? And I said ‘Puddle of Mud.’ He was shocked I knew the answer. I only knew the answer because I saw it here. Thanks Justin.
Out of topic but...
Today is Cliff Burton's day! Good day to you all!🤩
In the tv show The Good Place, the only two songs in the bad place(hell) were this one, and Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer😂😂
My favorite thing about this band is that I can call them Muddle Of Pudd.
I do it too hell yeah brother
Oh, I call them "Bucket of sh!t" 💩🤣🤣🤣
Is that meant to be an insault
@@nickfallaw7795 not sure about the other guy but I just do it for recreational purposes

That Come Clean album has some good songs on it
I loved this track back when it came out. It’s a nostalgic song for me.. not the best song, but I still enjoy it. Reminds me of my skateboarding days haha.
Love how you work the songs into your outro, it's funny but also cool and musical. LOVING this channel!
As Justin was singing the “la, la, la’s” all I could here was the Irish band The Divine Comedy. He sounds so much like Neil Hannon in that moment.
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnnnn 🎸🎶🎶🎶
You're hilarious, Justin! I love your dry sarcasm. 🤣 Your verbal "wah-wah" effect at 6:47 🎸 and Kermit the Frog voice at 9:23 cracks me up! 🐸
…..summer days drifting away but uh oh those summer nights!
This album was playing in a shop called pink planet in Taunton where my son used to buy his video games from. I immediately loved it asked the shop owner what it was called and went out and bought it. I just love this total album still one of my favourites to this day. Justin Thank You for your comments and content you're a real joy ❤️
The beginning chord progression reminds me of the song "Stand" by R.E.M.
WOW I completely forgot all about this song!
Another great video as always!
Man I was cracking up when you talked about the part of the song you though he was singing to you saying Just. hahah Don't ever change man.
There's something about it that reminds me of the wonderful 'Stacey's Mom' by Fountains of Wayne, who you covered on a previous video.
Scary that it's 21 years old this year.
Opened up for them 2 times. The first time he got arrested at the airport and he was late to the show🤣
What for?
@hannahmitchell87 I believe he tried to bring a bb gun into the airport if I remember correctly. Or maybe he was just detained. I'm getting it mixed up with when we were gonna open up for Coolio, but he brought an actual gun to the airport, and he got arrested. Wes was most likely detained, and that's why he was late. I'm not the biggest fan of them, but the actual band were cool dudes and the drummer was damn good.
@@CW19941 Haha! What a numpty!
@hannahmitchell87 I agree both of them weren't very smart in their decisions 🤣
Justin seems like he'd be an EASY FRAAAAND.
The outro! 👏
This, Sir Hawkins, is why your channel is so fantastic!!
So the video concept was a thrown together attempt at capturing the greatness of the Teen Spirit video in addition to revealing shots of a cheerleader and some explosions. Pure artistry!
Solid song! I loved the end where you tied in the Justin Hawkins Rides Again lick with the song lolol. The guitar work on their song Blurry is outstanding. The harmonic verses are amazing, something i still struggle to play to this day.
I have no idea how YT suddenly featured you on my feed but I'm glad. You are hell of a fun glad to watch and it was a shocking moment of realization when it turned out that the singer of Darkness was actually you. Small world. Don't stop doing these videos. Cheers.
Perfect video for a friday! I'm crying of laughter and running out of adjectives to admire your videos, Justin!!!(specially when they are so hilarious like this one)👍
The "tralalala" 05:07 ...and the "wah wah wah wah" 06:48 😂😂😂😂😂
and the title of the video (at least the first when you uploaded it)🤣
I like when you blend your theme song with the melody of the song you’ve just covered. For whatever reason I find that to be a pleasing way to cap the video.
Good day to you Justin Hawkins,
I love your music and your channel, so I just want to say thanks for doing what you do and sharing it with us all.
Also, I’m wondering if you could take a look at one of my favorite songs of all time, Mick Jagger’s “Evening Gown.”
I’ve never in my life met anyone whose musical taste is so inline with my own. You’re a real gem Justin.
P.S. The Steve Miller Band would also be a good band to look at for a video, I fink. 😀
Of course I had to edit this to correct my grammar (forehead slap..not cool)
Thanks Louise!
I had to rewind once more to liaten the intro"opening". That was really something ,with that ladt chord. Thank You❤ might worth to make one episode only for such bar.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 "The End" (that you sang in the melody of the song) You ROCK!
'shed builder stuff par excellence there' christ, laugh? took me 10 minutes to pull myself together, great stuff!
Justin, to continue your Puddle Of Mudd series (for that is what this is),
you could look at their previous track "Blurry",
which probably contributed to the success of "She effing Hates Me" 😀
Awesome channel Justin, love the episodes! I had the pleasure of witnessing the majesty & pageantry of The Darkness in The Australias last year.....brilliant show! Please do one on Extreme, maybe Get The Funk Out, Hip Today or Rest In Peace? 🤘🤘
I know that a lot of people tend to despise this song, And I can definitely understand why given how immature, Mundane it is. And looking back it's probably the biggest contributing factor behind Puddle Of Mudd's decline in mainstream popularity. Cause they already had three big singles before this one dropped, One of those being the 4th biggest rock hit of the entire decade.
But it seemed like after this song blew up and became almost as big as that one that the bands' image got tainted over night and wasn't able to recover in the same way that bands like Linkin Park were. Granted, I don't think any of the singles off of the later releases were hooky enough to be a Billboard Top 10 regardless of their reputation, But their career definitely would have faired better had She Hates Me never existed.
A band that has mainstream rock superstardom may not have the charting power of the crossover acts, But their careers last longer. (See Godsmack and Three Days Grace as examples) Whereas bands that get big from a crossover single tend to be forgotten once their reign is over. There's a reason why we don't hear anything about Hinder these days. Cause they were nothing without that crossover success.
Wes and Co. had so much to offer with those first three albums, But it all got overshadowed by the juvenile qualities of She Hates Me. Everybody remembers how great Blurry was, But most have forgotten the singles that were just as good (Control and Drift & Die), Cause they all got overshadowed by the novelty song. Which is unfortunate.
I was eating and I choked on Gunther’s ‘Tra la la’ 😂 not literally, but the fact he managed to get a Gunther reference in 😂
Plus, he’s broken my memory… I haven’t heard this song since I was in High School! A long time ago now!
I just noticed.....that opening little progression is basically that song from Grease.
Is it called Summer Days?
Wonder if Justin is gonna pick up on that.
Just paused it there....but I bet he'll notice it too.
I love that song. Back in my cover band days it was one of my favourites to play live, because I'm Scottish and swearing is in our DNA. It always got the crowd singing 😁
GET SWOLE!! A fine moment for this channel, I have it saved
Summer loving from grease
This is the kind of song which can sound great to an angsty teenager, but seems a bit overblown once you're older and have survived a few broken relationships. But IIRC before this song was released, this group had a major hit with the song _"Blurry",_ and I think that the good will from that song helped the popularity of this song. _"Blurry"_ also had a pretty good video, iirc.
Control was a far better song in my opinion
I'd have to disagree. I'm 50 and still feel I can relate to this song.
Ugly Kid Jo comes to mind for the same reason.
No.
Him speaking to you directly, as 'Just', really made me laugh.
The song is "Summer Loving" from the movie Grease! Seriuosly. Compare the two!
OMG it is hahahahahaha
Summer nights
Also chevk out the chorus to The Game of Love
I lived in Kansas City, MO for several years, and got into the local music scene. Wes grew up there. I couldn't find one person that had anything nice to say about him.
Justin is a content machine, love watching someone who actually has some personality and unique funny as heel one at that.
PS I wish you watched Blurry instead of She hates me
Hey Justin, love your channel. I don't know if you can make future suggestions on here. I'm a massive Extreme fan and I guess you probably are too. I've not heard you ever talk about them and Nuno!! I grew up listening to Extreme and have seen them live a few times and I don't think they get the recognition "more than words" excluded. Play with me, Get the Funk out, Mutha, Cupid's Dead, so many amazing songs to do a video on.
I mean, it sounds nice and I get to belt out “she fucking hates me”
good enough for me
I'd love to see Justin look at some Devin Townsend. I feel like they both would have a similar sense of humor.
Yes! Deadhead, Funeral or the Death of Music would be good
What the what.... this hasn't happened yet?!? What madness is this! Justin must remedy this!
LOL Id love to see him do that...especially one of the weirder ones like "Ziltoid"
5:32 + drum analysis = hysterical.
It resonates with people. It's kind of funny it's got to beat. It rocks and everybody sings along to it.
The Americanized glad and said just made me ridiculously happy. I needed that laugh.
Hi! Saint in Saintedland here! Depeche mode (Ghosts again)
Fun to here your thoughts.
Nice! You did it!
I love how you have obviously recently increased your THC dosage... 🙂 the playful humorous approach is genius ....thank you sir...I believe in thing called love.....🤷♂️
I loved this song. I was eleven years old at the time, though, and only had a 'Hits of 2002' compilation CD for my walkman. Shortly after, my singing teacher burnt me a CD with Love Is Only a Feeling on it; there but for the grace of God go I, et cetera. (I did legitimately purchase the record later on!)
4:25 That harmony would fit perfectly, well spotted
No time to watch vids lately, but leaving my like in support!
Much love to you Mr. Hawkins
Ugh. I feel you! It's pretty sad when we don't have 10-15 minutes, isn't it? It happens to me sometimes, too. I sometimes play the videos when I'm doing dishes or driving. Though I'm not as able to be focused on much by the time I get to it. I drive from one job to another all day. I walk dogs/pet sit and do private yoga sessions. Luckily, I love my work.
Why does the tune remind me of L7 pretty that we're dead
There are folks out in the world that like stuff they know nothing about, on a technical level. Especially when it comes to music and art. They just go with what moves them and have no idea why it moves them. And that's okay. So much of today's music doesn't even have key changes. A trained ear and musicians that go beyond the moon, spoon, June lyrics and write deeper, music poetry, know how to recognize subpar material while the rest of us raise our hands in the air and obliviously rock on.
If I had a shitty song on CZcams, I would want Justin to tell me it's shit because he does it in the nicest way possible. You rock Justin!
It’s basically Summer Lovin’ from Grease innit?
Brilliant assessment! 😂
True!😅
Indeed.
I'm really ill with a cold atm Watching this while having a poo and eating a chip butty perfect ! Thanks Justin ☺️
One in one out eh?

Your original video on puddle of muhd was the first video I saw of you Justin
As soon as you started playing it, I had to stop the video. I'm taking a shower next. I just can't have this song in my mind all weekend... nope. Not gonna do it.
I'll still give a thumbs up... maybe other people won't be so savvy, and it'll get stuck in THEIR heads. Mwahahahahaha!!!
This was SO MUCH BETTER than the other song, SO MUCH... BUT... the other was "live" and this is a video. I liked the song, but I'm not going to purchase the song. I REALLY HAVE TO LIKE THE BAND in order to purchase their music. And I tend to collect EVERY RELEASE IN CD, IF POSSIBLE. THE DARKNESS is next. One, because I'm following you, Justin, and I think you are hilarious, clever and extremely knowledgeable and you are WELL SEASONED in the world of music. Two, I haven't heard a stinky song yet from The Darkness. I suppose there could be a couple in the lot, but I haven't heard any thus far and your videos are great! A TERRIFIC SENSE OF HUMOR GETS ONE FAR AND YOU FIT THAT BILL. You have have great funny reviews of other artists and your videos are chock full of creative sense of humor! Three, you are friends with Steel Panther and I LOVE STEEL PANTHER! They have THE MOST WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOR, THEY WORK THEIR BOOTIES OFF, THEY ARE WELL SEASONED, THEY HAPPEN TO BE EXTREMELY INTELLEGENT AND THEY ARE JUST THE CUTEST!!!!! Four, NUMBER THREE all over again WHICH APPLIES TO YOU AND YOUR BAND, THE DARKNESS! So, next music investments are The Darkness CDs and DVDs, if there are any. The visuals are just as important as the sound for me. Possibly a tee also. Love the typeface of your logo. Very retro and VERY CURVY 😘. And then, the SWOLE CD or DVD and GUNTHER CDs and DVDs, love that guy. Plus, I'm half Swedish and he's funny and cute and Swedish. Oh, and he has a Brussels Griffon in his Christmas video. I currently have three (have had four prior all rough coated) and have always loved the breed, those "back talking Griffons!" My boys! My Three Sons! The Three Stooges! Gidorah! Thank you for the review(s). And your guitar sounds really nice! A little different. Not the same as the flowery one, but a little different. At least to me it does. Could be my phone (shoulder shrug). Sounds nice none the less. OH, BY THE WAY, THIS PAST WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2023, BURT BACHARACH PASSED AWAY. HE WAS 94. I'M SURE YOU KNOW THAT THOUGH. Rip Burt. Thank you for all the wonderful songs and all the hits... 💔😥🙁🌸🌹🤟
I 'king love this song, I 'king love this music video, which puts it on my top ten official music videos - Rock And Roll Deserves Do Die also resides there. But top of that list is The Dandy Warhols - Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth, which at this point I don't think can be surpassed.
Yes! Toast! I F*cking love this song! Still listen to it regularly. Spent my teen years convinced he was singing “Toast” not “trust”! 😂 It’ll always be the Toast song to me! 😅 🎶She F*cking hates me… TOAST! She F*cking hates me La-la-la-Love…🎶 🤦🏻♀️😂😂😂
Same bahahahahaaaa
I think he said Baguette actually.
I just read on Wikipedia that Josh Freese plays drums in this song (also the whole album) i had no idea
Round that era, it'd be easier to list the radio rock songs that Josh Freese DIDN'T play on
@@RickReasonnz lol I was about to say I never knew much about that guy but I saw him in every CD liner like an old friend!
I did jump around to this back in the ol' day. The riffs are fine and the lyrics provided some easy crowd bounding 'sing-along' sessions on the dancefloor. They've made better songs after this, and the singer got more of an own style instead of emulating Cobain/Weiland/Staley.
An old friend of mine is the current guitarist. I haven’t talked to him in a while, but I do feel bad that this was best gig he could find. Matt, you deserve better, buddy.
Let him enjoy the money, then move on to greater things. Hopefully the experience won't scar him for life (probably will though).
That exaggurated nasal/twangy American accent is gold. 😁
Oh wow! It _really_ doesn't feel like this song is already *20 years* old! 🤯 And their other hit, 'Blurry', was playing on the car stereo when I was on an Ireland trip then, driving along the Ring of Kerry *twice* , accidentally 😅
I love that you can sing ST's "I Saw Your Mommy" easily along to this.
Yup, they totally copied ST.
Can you react to Ty Segall "The Singer" please? Saw him and the Freedom Band twice last week in Auckland, NZ, one of the best gigs I've been to in a long time! Love your channel, see you on the ice, mate. Cheers!
I would love to hear the unedited part from 4:19 looks like you're about to go off on a rant 🤣
Again Mr Hawkins delivers 😂
Exactly, he always did and always will cos he knows his stuff! 👍

My dad had freshly been divorced by my mother and used to play this in the car all the time lol, so I suppose I have nostalgia for it but other than that I can see in a way why it was popular for the time it was produced in.
It's very derivative of what was popular at the time. A friend of mine in radio refers to it as the least common denominator. Most people choose not to be mentally challenged by their listening.
It’s amazing that you played their harmony without realizing it’s pretty much the same as “I believe in a thing called love”‘s
Amazing. So smug yet his greatest hit is equally derivative crap to Puddle of Mudd hahaha
@@p_snimon_enis9850 I can't stand him being so smug when he composed basically the shittest song of all time.
@@p_snimon_enis9850 No, trolls. I was just making a joke over a curious fact. Don’t use my comment as base for your hate, you faceless, content-less, coward pieces of s***. Justin is awesome.

Well done on the virtue signaling though. D*** rider hahaha
@@p_snimon_enis9850 be hateful and toxic on your own comment, mate... don't come adding your filthy sludge on mine.
When it first came out I said to myself, "Well, here's a tune for meat-head jocks who probably think that Hootie and the Blowfish songs are high Art." But 21 years later I feel that... well, actually I feel the exact same way. This is a stupid ***king song.
The truth is that I have never listened to much post-grunge, some isolated song... To each his own (which I fully respect✌️)
Pretty sure I saw you at Reading Festival circa 2002! Does seem like yesterday but simultaneously a lifetime ago.
Apparently there’s crowd shots in this video that are CGI because they put it out there on the local rock radio stations that the shoot would be happening and when the day came only 100-200 people showed up, and they wanted to look like 800-1000 people showed up
This song was my ringtone for my wife years ago.
I mean it’s no Magnum Opus but Yes Justin, I like this song 😂 it’s nostalgic to me, takes me back to being a high school rebel.
JUST.. IN HAWKINS HATES ME!!!
That Coming Clean album was actually pretty good. A lot of decent songs in it that hit the Nirvana/Silverchair vibe, which I enjoyed.
The trippy-ish mostly acoustic ender Pissing It All Away (I think it was called) was interesting too.
Not reinventing the wheel but delivering well (on the album) 👍
Catchy, relatable, powerful chorus, nice guitar tone. This is a pop rock masterpiece.
It's as American as saying "Hoorah!" Instead of "hooray!". But I quite like it. It incorporates well with your sung theme at the end. Maybe adding a bit of whatever tune you have just dissected each week could be a twist. Akin to that Top Gear trait of changing the names of the presenters in the credits after one of their special adventures.
Humour is cool.
I could listen to Justin sarcastically rip on POM all day 😆
I don't hate it. I mean it's not meant to be fucking deep. Fairly certain it was made for a male teenage audience and sure many identified with it at the time and it brought them a sense of understanding. Isn't that a component of what music is supposed to do, make you feel less alone?
As a teenaged girl being pursued by a guy I couldn’t stand at the time, I LOVED this song! Took every opportunity possible to sing it loudly and obnoxiously wherever he was around! I even switched up the lyrics to make them work - “I F*ucking hate you…” etc… 😂 He did not get the hint 🤦🏻♀️ 😂😂😂
glad to know you also fall into the trap of "that was 30 years ago" and it not being the 80's. Dinosaur JR's "where you been" is 30 years old this week, do a dinosaur video!
Come clean is actually a banging album. Drift and die is a tuuuuune
Oh yes, this was a little gem. And it's really that old? Oh crikey, where is the time going?
The sad thing about the whole Nirvana incident is he just doesn't have those notes anymore. He's been forcing the belty rasp for years and he's probably got vocal chord polyps. He could probably do it at some point, but those days are gone because he's mistreated his voice.
Still listen to come clean to this day
Rediscovered it recently and have to say I liked it
Why do you have to say it, what will happen if you don't?
A question for question day, maybe? Justin, you've said a few times that you're writing your memoir. Are you relying on your journals, memory or both? Do you have friends and family who will remember the stuff you can't? Ha ha! Thanks again for all you do!
Oh yes, thanks, and Justin if you do write your memoir, please be very careful, and have your lawyer read everything very carefully. You never know (I think you know what I mean).
Cheers April, I answered this in the comments video.
