Mike Campbell , one of the most tastful players ever. Terrific guitarist 👍
Yes, yes, yes. One of the greats.
Was a good replacement for Lyndsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac too!
His guitar collection is incredible. Fun fact, Campbell is
co-writer of the Don Henley classic, ‘The Boys Of Summer’
I have a Don Henley album in my collection just because of his playing and songwriting!
Highly respected among musicians but sadly unknown to the general public.
Miss Tom Petty so much. I had such respect for him as a musician and as a person. Truly a straight shooter who you always knew was going to give you honest rock. Thank you for covering him. May he never be forgotten. ❤
Every Florida football game in Gainesville, at the end of 3rd quarter everyone sings "I won't back down!"
@@lilian896 oh that’s so beautiful! ❤
Fun fact...TP had that whole song written except for the chorus. He didn't tell anyone that he didn't have a chorus, he just told them to roll & hoped something would come to him. He said when the chorus came up, he just sang "Even the losers, get lucky sometimes" without even thinking about it. Amazing!
Lovely tribute to Tom Petty. I live in Florida, and it’s quite incredible to hear the 88,000 people in the University of Florida in Gainesville belt out “Won’t back down”. Very proud to honor their hometown hero. I miss him💔
When I visited Florida in 2017 (I’m from Sweden) I was so stoked about a radio station only playing Tom Petty songs. Was there during the summer so he was still around. That station was on almost the entire time while we were on the road to somewhere. We were saying, yeah he is from here so that’s why.
The only act of decent behavior ever recorded in THE SWAMP! Go VOLS!
@@zackamania6534 ok? I’m a Penn State fan forever.
@@Plumeria6460 ooh yikes. Not so great either. (Sandusky, Paterno etc)
@@zackamania6534 Jeremy Pruitt?? Throwing stones in glass houses?
And the REASON he was on medication was because he had a broken hip yet REFUSED to cancel his tour to get it fixed! For his art and his fans, always. That’s why he was the coolest musician to ever live.
He did also like heroin a bit too much- plus pot- smoking cigs and drinking alcohol. Anyway he’s my favourite songwriter too👍
CodyAlushin I’m so glad you brought that up. A broken hip is excruciating and debilitating. This man, this artist carried on his tour in that agony for his fans, for his music. That should be lauded and applauded. ❤
@@mimilini1 It did unfortunately speed his demise though, don’t forget!
A easy procedure could have been performed and he would have still been performing. Unfortunately for Tom his monkey on his back ( smack) got the last word plus the other opiates he had on script! A sad loss but avoidable🎸
@@spacerockerlightyears though the procedure itself is easy, the recovery definitely is not. I wish he had gotten off the tour bus and gone right into the hospital. His music was so fantastic. It’s so great that he left behind such an incredible body of work. I just wish he were still here to produce even more. He was just that good.
@@mimilini1 well yes the recovery is bad, but he had the time and money to recover in hisMalibu beach house, so no big drama. He could have written songs, played guitar etc, you don’t need your leg to do that, anyway he made the wrong choice and unfortunately that was that. I’ve been a fan of Toms for 50 years, a proper geezer!
I'm learning about so many artists I wouldn't have listened to otherwise! Tom Petty should have been on my listening list long ago.
And now he is!
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain what foo fighters album would you say is there best work for me wasting light and maybe echoes silence. Since then they have gone down hill hate to say it yeh this is off video topic I was just curious on your opinion Justin.
Absolutely! Tom Petty is a must, one of few musicians I liked immediately without having to hear for a few years before it grew on me
add Mudcrutch to your list,Toms first band in the 70's that reformed after the Heartbreakers success to record 2 albums in 2008 & 2016.
@@noelb4768 Ooo thank you, definitely lots to check out! I appreciate your knowledge
I was hearing Tom Petty songs for probably at least 20 years when suddenly one day I realized I loved just about everything I'd ever heard from him. Like a late epiphany. "Well I'll be damned, I'm a Tom Petty fan."
One thing thst makes Tom Petty's choruses so impactful is Benmont Tench's glorious Hammond organ.
Yes! Tom Petty is a dad rock legend. Fantastic poet, so approachable in his lyrics, demeanor, voice, yet so perfect. I'm really glad to see appreciation for Tom and the Heartbreakers and spreading the good music.
I mean, "Baby, even the losers, get lucky sometimes", what a great line
Thanks for this, I am a huge Tom Petty fan and felt a huge loss when he died. For me, he was a brilliant songwriter who wore his heart on his sleeve, was authentic, and his lyrics managed to connect with so many of us, I think it was because emotionally he was very open in his songs. Live performance wise he did not need a big stage show as he had a great band in the Heartbreakers. Definitely cover more on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and shoutout to Mike Campbell who is an underrated guitarist and songwriter too.
Hello Justin, if you haven’t seen the documentary, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream.
It’s a four hour film that is a “must watch “
The Waiting is my favorite Petty song.
I won’t back down. One of my all time favourites. R.I.P. Tom.
I still remember the day I turned on the tv and saw the music video for, “I won’t back down”. I asked my parents the next day for a guitar. So many of my best memories have come from playing live and being in bands and it’s all thanks to Tom. Saw him 9 times and you could always tell how much he loved music and his fans. He was just such an honest guy. Even the Heartbreakers are just a group of genuinely nice and appreciative guys.
Im just an old hard rock, metal and thrash fan that doesn’t listen to much else but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers wrote so many damn good songs. Solo and with the Wilburys also. He was one of a kind. RIP Tom Petty and thanks for the memories.
With your love of Tom Petty, you just rose up a few levels in my book.
Got to see him on his last tour before his death. I felt his stuff was overplayed when I was younger, but after seeing the "Running Down A Dream" documentary, I appreciated him immensely. It was a memory I will cherish. Perfect summertime jams.
My thoughts exactly, his Full Moon Fever was quite glossy and thus overplayed on the radio. I bought his MCA Greatest Hits collection in the mid 90s and only then discovered his earlier work. Still, it wasn't until 2014's "Hypnotic Eye" that i actually started buying most of his studio albums. That's when i realized that his hits were really just the tip of the iceberg.
Went to the only European show in London and I'm so glad I did. He died the day I arrived on the trip that led toe being with my wife. He will forever be linked to us becoming something.
When we have a service in Colombia for her family I intend to play Wildflowers for her.
I was absolutely devastated when Tom Petty died, I was bawling my eyes out driving to work the next morning. He was musical hero. And love Campbells guitar playing, so underrated.
Thanks for covering this, hope you do more Tom Petty in the future.
When i heard the news of Tom Petty’s death I slumped down on the stairs at home and wept. I’d seen him on that last tour when he played Hyde Park. Petty had been, and still is, an inspiration to me from the moment i heard his music 22 years ago
Me too. When I heard that he passed, I went outside and sat on the deck all alone and cried my eyes out. I didn’t want to believe it. It was on the eve of my 60th birthday. Who knew I would enter into my 60s without Tom Petty being in my world? I still listen to him every single day without fail.
I'm 42, first remember hearing Tom on the radio the year Full Moon Fever came out and Free Fallin was everywhere. Love at first listen. His death hit hard, I think because he had such a long and productive career and his music was with us as we grew up. Seemed like he would always be around for us.
And for the longest time Even the Losers was my favorite Petty track as well. Thanks for showcasing this!
Much love.
One of my all time favourites. A genius songwriter. Love “Into The Great Wide Open”, the story of many artists. RIP Tom Petty.
One of my favorites as well.
Jeff Lynn wrote that one.
@@JackTheladd it was a collaboration between the two.
One of the greatest of all time he always had great songs and he is missed very much RIP TOM
Damn The Torpedoes was the first album I ever bought, back in 1979. One of the greatest rock albums ever. I’ve been entranced by Tom’s lyrics and Mike’s guitar-playing ever since. RIP, Tom.
Saw them in 2012. Incredible. So tight and the sound was amazing. Guitar tones to die for. Hit after hit after hit. Couple of great covers. One of the first bands I got into as a teenager in the early 90s even though I’d been aware of him since childhood. I was gutted when he died. His back catalogue is just epic.
There's a song of his called room at the top that I listened to all the time when I was going through this horrible breakup - still means a lot to me 😢
Tom Petty’s songs/lyrics change and have new meaning as a person matures. Music with that quality is so rare, iconic.
Had the pleasure of seeing TP 2 times in my home town of St. Pete., Fla. Late 70s early 80s.
I was about 12 years old at the time.
He was a captivating person on stage and, as you say, a brilliant song writer.
My favorite quote from Petty is "Do something you really like, and hopefully, it pays the rent. As far as I'm concerned, that's success." I was once an attorney and fizzled out after my dad passed. I just didn't want to do it.... Years later, I decided to chase my real childhood dream of being a musician. Now I'm 53, delivering food all day (so i can listen to music theory all day). I come home at night and study and practice until around 2am. This journey is everything to me. I NEVER get tired of learning music. This quote has become an anchor. It's not about what I can become. It's only about how I am living now. I'm living my dream. This is real life to me.
Tom Petty seemed like a good guy and was a great mad hatter. His voice is so distinctive and he has so many great songs
I'm 55 and never truly appreciated the brilliance of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers music until the past 5 yrs. Now, I absolutely LOVE their songs!!! I feel like I can relate to each one. They had sooo many amazing hits! ❤🔥
This is one of my favorite TP&tHB songs. The whole vibe reminds me of when I first met my spouse, and we were outcast punk teenagers from different high schools… our story lasted. We are lucky losers that found each other and this song reminds me of when we first got together, smoking on roofs, looking at stars ❤. We miss TP. 😢 He will always be the most handsome man in rock-and-roll to us.
I loved getting albums back in the day, staring at the artwork and noticing all the little details. Trying like hell to figure out what they meant, etc. Before the internet, it was also one of the only ways to see what the band looked like. A much more intimate music listening experience we're all missing nowadays
I grew up loving Tom Petty and his music. I wrote a song in his honor after he died..."Full Moon Fire". R.I.P. Tom Petty
That’s awesome dude
I saw him live once and he thanked the entire audience after every song, still never seen that
Tom Petty is timeless. What a legacy.
Tom Petty's music was all around me, growing up, but I only really listened to his sound when he did the George Harrison concerts. The jamming sections when the sheer love of music was so obvious was a joy.
I think Here Comes My Girl is one of my favourites of Toms. The piano is gorgeous, the way he speaks and sings, you can feel everything. Such a huge loss. One of the rare ones I loved from my childhood into my mid fourties when he passed. So very sad but still so loved. ❤
Damn the Torpedoes and Full Moon Fever are peak Tom Petty and 'Even the Losers' is a fantastic deep cut. Thank you for bringing his music to new ears.
Tom was one of the greats. I'm always amazed he was able to reinvent him sound enough every few years but still remain true to himself.
I love Even the losers! I have seen him in concert 3 times and it was amazing every time! His sound was so authentic, he sounded just like on the album's.
YES👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍thxs for riding again Justin
AZ
I love Damn the Torpedoes, I bought it on cassette in 1979 while attending trade college in Melbourne, Australia , I still have that cassette but I'm a bit scared to try to play it as it probably won't work . Tom Petty was brilliant.
That was brilliant. Thank you Justin
Congrats for the 350k followers. This channel is a great asset for music industry.
Hope you are recovering well from the tour fatigues.
Many things colliding here; favorite CZcams channel and favorite artist, and favorite song by that artist. Thanks, Justin! I have always been loving your content but this time you took it even higher.
Thanks again!
The loss of Tom Petty cuts deep. I am still sad about it. Great artist and great band. The man was a songwriters songwriter.
Thanks for introducing me to this song. It got me with the imagery of the opening verse. Beautiful poetry
Thanks for breaking these songs down… always appreciated.
My second concert was Tom Petty on the DAMN THE TORPEDOES tour here in Kansas City in 1980. A wonderful, underrated band called The Fabulous Poodles opened. What a fantastic night of live music. Petty sold out a 3,000 seat hall and a month or two later, he and the band broke big! I was so glad to see him in a smaller venue, but knew he was headed for arena glory!
I went on to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers over a dozen times since then, including that final tour. He is a Rock & Roll hero and his loss was devastating for me. The Heartbreakers were such a phenomenal live band. I just saw Bruce Springsteen two nights ago (eight live shows from him since 1984) and it made me think of Tom Petty, as always.
Both bands have always been about the music. Neither Petty or Sprinsteen were concerned that much about image or flash. They knew that the power of Rock & Roll in front of a locked in crowd could bring everybody salvation! Still love "Damn the Torpedoes", but the next album, "Hard Promises" is my favorite Petty record. Thanks for shining a light on his brilliant music!
Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs need some much needed attention….AMAZING band…saw them last month….REAL rock n roll in its purest
Great artist and great song...beautiful and interesting video , thanks Justin...
Beautiful guitar ! Brilliant show Saturday night in Wembley !
Love hearing the story behind the song especially how the talking at the start came onto the actual track. Big Tom Petty fan and I learnt something new - thanks Justin!
My first concert, 3/15/83. Miss him.
Tom was the ultimate showman. (You follow in his footsteps. You’re a helluva showman, in your own right.)
Thank you Justin! Tom and Mike are such an amazing pair!!!!! Wow!!!!!
Great song, great album, brilliant talent. I miss him too. Thank you Justin. ❤️
Love love love "Into the great wide open" just a beautiful song and video
Saw Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at The Point Dublin Ireland 1992
❤️
Now I have to listen to this record, been awhile!Love it s much
Thanks Have a nice one!!

I still haven't accepted the fact that we lost Prince, Bowie, and Petty in such a short span of time. The universe is f@#$ing cruel
And Glenn Frey.
Don't do drugs or smoke heavily is the key takeaway from this me thinks..
@@al81yoo Bowie died from cancer. You could say it's from all the partying he did earlier in his career or whatever, but the fact of the matter is millions of people die from cancer who've never touched a drug or alcohol. Like most cancer victims, it was most likely luck of the draw.
@@youreadyfreddie , Don Henley didn’t die.
I think I'll listen to that album right now. Thanks for the suggestion Justin, it remains one of my very early favorites.
Well done, Justin. Love your insights and Tom Petty
His songs have always been dear friends that have made my life better. 😍
Great job. Tom Petty is one of my absolute favourite artists, sadly never got to see him live. Keep them coming Justin!
OH MAN! This hits hard. Tom is my all time favorite artist. And "Even the Losers" is my favorite Tom song. This song, like so many of Tom's, is a short story. You can totally imagine a movie script written from this song.
Yeah, I'm glad they basically did that with 'Into the Great Wide Open.
Not only was he a great songwriter, he was one of the best storytellers in music.
Tom Petty is one of my favorites of all time as well. ❤
Well done on 'Even the Losers' being your favorite. I've always thought that is a stunning composition as well as being a killer song. So many bits and changes. Perfect.
I'm so grateful that my dad was a huge Tom Petty fan and I was introduced to his music as a child. I'm even more grateful I got to see him perform in 2012 when his tour came to town. It is one of the greatest concerts I've ever attended and I'm so happy I was able to see them before he passed. Definitely a "bucket list" concert.
Just last year I rediscovered this album and it lived in my car's CD player for months. I couldn't believe how strong the songs were and what a quality recording it was. A nearly perfect album.
The guitar you are using is absolutely beautiful! The paint job looks almost 3D. Beautiful piece
Campbell’s slide solo/signature lick on The Wallflowers’ “6th Avenue Heartache” is my single favorite piece of guitar work.
Hey Justin I saw Tom play in Madison WI with the Heartbreakers and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been too, they could just groove on everything they played, so many great songs.
Yes! I saw them on that tour. Lucky to have been born in the 60s. 😎
I've been 'waiting' for this!
Thank you! My favorite! ❤❤❤
Hi Justin thanks for doing this one ❤ Tom Petty is one of my favourite musicians to I’ve enjoyed listening to his music for many years . One of my favourite songs from him is Here Comes My Girl ❤️❤️❤️
Tom petty was amazing and lives on through his music and those who are inspired by it. I need to listen to some more of his music, as a very early 80s child myself I feel I missed the boat with this one slightly and have been limited to the more commercialised side of his work... time to have a dig through the archives 🤣
I was going to see Tom petty in 2017, had him scheduled for my city :( and he was gone. I've been listening to him since I was a kid in the 90s.
thanks for talking about Tom. I was 19 when i got to see him on his last tour with my little brother at Forest Hills Stadium in New York. His death also hit me the hardest, and i had no choice but to get a heartbreakers flying V through a heart tattoo. thanks for the video justin! and cant wait for more
Tom Perry was the one remaining artist I wanted to see in concert but never did. His death left me flabbergasted and so sad!! He’s definitely an amazing singer, songwriter and performer!!! I’m miss him!!
good morning justin! ....we love tom petty!! truly love.
Love him and The Heartbreakers… saw them in The Point in Dublin yonks ago… loved the power chord interplay between Tom & Mike… thanks for that memory. Played a few songs what I wrote at my wedding & was complimented for sounding like him… keep on being you JH!
Tom brings me back to my youth, arcade machines, bowling , skating rinks. Those fries with the special seasoning under the hot lamp at the convenience store. Brisk summer nights.
Enjoying your channel a great deal.
Totally agree Justin 🤘
AND the awesome Rickenbacker. 😊 This is a favorite of mine too. So many good songs. ❤
Oh man, that scene from The Silence of the Lambs. Perfect.
What an album that was! An all-time favorite of mine. "Even the Losers" is special. That intro voice tells me it's time to crank up the volume! Even those drum fills by Stan Lynch were outstanding! Great soundtrack for my life in those days!
I love Tom Petty and I love you for spreading the good word! All the best to you, Justin!
Implied notes or colours of them are the best notes.
One of my favourite Tom Petty songs.
Thanks!! ❤
So cool that Even the Losers is your favorite!! It’s been mine also since the album was released
Bloody love Tom.
One of my faves is from Echo, 'lonesome sundown'.
A damaged songwriter is a dangerous beast.
Wonderful album! I was a sophomore in high school when it came out and I bought it in cassette form! Back when you could only hear songs on the radio and then buy the album for more. I may still have that cassette.
I'm a '75 model too, and Tom Petty was always in the background. I've learnt to appreciate him more as I've gotten older. His passing was one of the saddest. We have lost so many greats in the last 7 years. 😥 At least the music is with us forever.
I don't know much about you Justin, But I subbed. Such a wonderful tasteful man, I LOVED the Lorna Shore reaction. I felt compelled to comment this time around because I often feel like Tom Petty is slept on hard. Loved to see a video like this.
All time fav. They clearly loved guitars and the sound of guitars (as do I). Of course Benmont was as integral part of the sound as well. But often just a simple drone note on the organ. Their songs were simple, but a perfect celebration of the sound. And man, they had a sound. Instantly recognizable before you even here a lyric. And their live shows ... like guitar porn. It was so great to see them actually using these beautiful instruments instead of keeping them in glass cases. I only saw them in person once back in 1981 in Ottawa. Not so many guitars back then. But they did a 3 hour show with so much energy. I remember going home and playing guitar all night long. Next day, I didn't go to work, picked up the telephone and told the boss he was a jerk. Well, not really ... but I did play all night long. I miss them badly.
I love this man too Justin... Tom was an artist with pure integrity... his legend lives on❤
Fantastic tribute to TP. Was at the Glasgow Ovo gig. Loved the playlist before the band came on :-)
Never heard ‘Dani California’ by RHCP?! Surely that means it will now have to be your next review!
