For someone who's a comedian Eddie Murphy sure can't take a joke. He got mad at David Spade for a dumb joke on SNL too.

Eddie made his whole comedic career making fun of EVERYONE! He did vicious put downs on Garrett Morris, made a quip bout Richard Pryor’s accident, making fun of Liberace’s sexuality, Michael Jackson, James Brown’s speech pattern, etc all on SNL. I don't know, after The Adventures Of Pluto Nash and Norbit, they can definitely take Eddie Murphy back.
He has been a trainwreck in every of his "comedy" movies. All of them are toilet humor, burps humor, buggers humor... The dude has this 6 years old kids humor that even I couldn't like at that age. He should have always been a stand up comedian but dude thinks too high of himself, in his mind he is Hollywood material only.

During his heyday Eddie Murphy made fun of several celebrities. He did several non-flattering impressions of Bill Cosby, James Brown, Mr. Rogers, Richard Pryor, and especially Michael Jackson. He had it coming.
Ah ha - but he never said he had nothing against Joe Piscopo! Now there's a heartbreaker of a story
Tom apologized to both of them publicly said it was nothing personal. He said they just happened to be on TV when the verse was being written.
@@mathrealm14 Why would Petty apologize? There was no malice behind the the lyrics. If anything, they were recognition of their fame and success in entertainment.
Fuck Joe Piscopo. They let him come on Star Trek, pretty much as himself. The episode was neither good scifi nor funny. Slight value for Data's character development, but they could have handled that in a more entertaining way.
"Take back your front wheel drive,," my favorite line in this song.
lol
Eddie always had insecurities. Within the context of the song, all it really implies is he was a huge star whose name everyone would recognize.
I'm guessing Murphy had some other previous petty issue with Petty and assumed the song was being negative. Possibly because Murphy did a less than flattering skit or joke about Petty and assumed it was a payback dis.

Tom Petty in concert was always a great time. Can't recall him playing that particular song live.
I used to get free luxury box tickets at Charlotte NC Verizon amphitheater. I got to see Tom twice. It was amazing!!! Then my husband had to go and retire so no more luxury box seats. Dammit.

Eddie was already pissed at Tom because the Heartbreakers refused to cover "Party all the Time" on the "Southern Accents" album.
Eddie's only pissed because he knows how beloved Tom will always be, while Eddie can only hope to be tolerated. He runs his mouth about everyone else and his schtick got old a long time ago. Love you, Tom. We miss you down here.

I think you undersold just how big of a star Eddie Murphy was in the mid 1980s. He was famous in a way that's not even positive today. He and Michael Jackson were probably the two most famous people on the planet at that time.
Those two and Bill Cosby...
@@Piece-O-Pie Not nearly at the same level of appeal.
Cosby fame was from longevity and national. Where Jackson and Murphy fans were cross generational and international. Jackson obviously for his music and live tours. Rick James was big too...
Tom Petty did all right back then, too

Awesome work, thanks.
Maybe it's been covered or brought up in the comments but this made me think of Joe DiMaggio being upset with Paul Simon about the line from "Mrs. Robinson" until Paul sat down with him and explained what he meant by it.

Dude, Jammin Me is my favorite too. I discovered it on the radio in about 87 as a kid though. It was popular back then!

I never heard that story. But Jammin Me is not one of my favs. Can’t believe it made in to #1.
Everyone in this comment section is so scandalized over Murphy’s response but if someone you’d never met wrote a pop song telling you to go away and you heard it on the radio and on TV a bunch of times you’d probably be like “f that guy” too.

I guess Eddie Murphy massive inflated ego got the last laugh with Petty's tragic passing. Petty and Dylan's song line was PERFECTLY apt.

Fizzled pretty quickly after the 80s
I love Eddie Murphy and Tom Petty! Wondered about the title, until remembered how Eddie was mentioned in "Jammin' Me". I always wondered about that. Well, now we know that Tom had nothing against Eddie or Vanessa Redgrave. He didn't mention Joe Piscopo, but it could've been an oversight. Now I wonder if Bob Dylan meant to slight them, or if he meant no harm and just randomly chose names of celebs. Bob Dylan fan, too.
He doesn't like it because it was said by a White man.
@@scottodonnell7121 Explain please.
From what I read years ago, there was no issue. He heard about his name being in the song, called Petty's people and asked them what was up with that. It was explained that the song was constructed by random words and names being thrown in. The discussion resulted in Murphy being invited to appear in the video, which he did.
I had forgotten about that song.
Cuz Tom has so many other great songs.

How is it possible to hate Tom Petty. Absolute legend
The song’s rhythm and chorus really give me the feel of a Rolling Stone song..I would love to hear them cover it…Mike had lots of input on this album..In my eyes it’s an awesome album but Tom didn’t like it..Runaway Trains is a Gem..that’s Mike’s idea for sound…this was the time Mike created the sound for Boys of Summer by Don Henley…that entire first Don Henley solo album is the Heartbreakers playing for him..his next solo albums were not as successful…goes to show what that band could do and why they were so sought after..They played on many albums in part or together..One of the best live and studio bands to have ever existed..they did the best version of covers you’ll ever hear…I miss Tom very much…
Information overload in the 80s ; through cable television and vcr players TV viewers could now watch just about anything they wanted, or didn't want. Information overload in the 2020s...oh gawd. It was fun watching Eddie Murphey's humor save SNL from irrelevance in the 80s, really a great time.

I've never seen the record cover of that album. It's so much cooler makes me want the vinyl now.

Eddie has always been a soft one. 😏
We thought we were being jammed with information overload in the 80's. Now we see it as simpler times. Kids today probably don't even get that line from Pink Floyd's song Nobody Home: "I've got thirteen channels of s**t on the tv to choose from."
First time I heard someone talk about jammin me. One of my favorite petty tunes his vocals are amazing on the track
Eddie needs to let that go! A stupid beef with Tom Petty. I am a black dude, and I like Eddie. However, I am a huge fan of Tom Petty. Tom Petty was a cool and gritty artist. Eddie’s name being mentioned in a song is cool. Shows that Eddie came to mind. Is that really something to get all twisted about? Nope! Peace.
@Darin
You seem like a very cool, level-headed guy! I think a "self-deprecating sense-of-humor" is one of the greatest attributes a person can have. And so I can't really understand anyone getting so bent out of shape by such a vague comment like "Take back Eddie Murphy". If I'd been Eddie, I'd have replied with something like, "Take me back to... where? My childhood? My 12th grade Math teacher's class? The bar? OK! THE BAR. But *you're* buying, Tom!"

Incidentally, Darin, I'd buy you a beer at the bar any time, Brother!
