How good was Landon Donovan actually? #GOAT
New video about one of the most talked about players we've seen over the 2000's in football. In this episode we take on Landon Donovan who played for Bayern, Bayer Leverkusen, La Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes and Everton for most of his career.

His loan at Everton was actually brilliant, he did amazing, he proved he was European league quality... I think that was his biggers achievement, he did great in England and exorcised the demons of people saying he wasn't good enough to play in Europe.
But it also proved that he wasted his career by not playing in Europe, he could have played in any of the top european leagues but decided to play in a very poor level competition rather than test himself. Imagine if Manu Ginobili or Dirk Nowitzki decided to avoid playing in the the NBA people wouldn't think much of them as players.
@@alancawfield6549 well, that is true but also he did try, he kind of didn't make it early on in his career, he was on the books at Leverkusen for 5 years and nothing much came of it... So until that point, it was suggested he just wasn't good enough. Really he probably just needed more opportunities and once he developed enough as a player, once he did those loan spells at Everton you could see the maturity in his game, he was tidy in possession, he exploited space well and defended well as part of the team... He was under a heavy microscope because of the context but he handled the occasion really well and in some games was even one of their best players
Donovan was a good player but not good enough to play in Europe consistently
Not good enough to stay permanently
Great comment and very valid point's. Peace from the UK 🇬🇧.
Him being left off the 2014 World Cup roster will always be what I remember klinsmann for. If he was there the Altidore injury wouldn’t have affected us as much. I imagine if he was our striker in the Belgium game, we would’ve had a solid chance at beating them.
that moment was awesome, I've never rated Landon so seeing him lose his spot made my year. he's not Captain America, he's not even US Agent, I'm glad he rotted away in California, the state for losers
Over Julian green! but he actually scored that game 😂 oh well
@@madsismad9113 yup. I was happy Klinsmann didn’t pick Donovan for the 2014 WC. Dude thought he could take a break and able to walk right into the roster.
usa would not beat Belgium guarantee you that
@@bentob1ox we were so close we could’ve
As a Mexican I can say in retrospective that he knew how to heat up the Mexico-USA clashes. He was also great in the pitch. Hopefully Pulisic or some the new American players get to be like him as it would be great for the rivalry.
So far Pulisic is handling Mexico just fine...last I checked.
mckennie will wind up being USA best player of all time, being coached by Pirlo will help him immensely in the future
@@CoolHandLukeDuke but he is no landon donovan.
@@CoolHandLukeDuke not when chichartito comes back to the mexican national team.
Lies again? White King Black Ops
Having known Landon since he was a kid in Redlands, California, and having crossed paths with Klinsman a time or two over the years, I will say that those two both have egos that got in the way of the game in that last World Cup. Even using Donovan as a Super Sub in a couple of the games would have given the US team the fire power to advance past where they were halted. The team Klinsman brought just did not have the finishing power that Donovan would have added.
Stop. You didn’t know Landon lo
my uncle used to play club soccer with him
@@frankopiskulich8075 my grandma used to bake his cookies after games
@@marlon363 my dad used to be his coach 😂
How can he have a big ego? He’s not even that good. I don’t even know if we can say he was ever even one of the best 100 players in the world at any point in his career.
Landon will forever be my favorite player. He's still our greatest national team player of all time, it's insane how he always showed up in World Cups and Mexico rivalry matches. However, Pulisic's 1G+2A in the 2022 WC goes right along with Donovan's performances in 2002 and 2010.
Isn't puslic from Poland or something lol

He was an awesome soccer player!! I used to call him American Iniesta.
On another note, I'm surprised that you didn't mention his performance in the 2009 Confederations Cup, in which the US upset Spain in the semi-finals and had a 2-0 lead against Brazil in halftime in the final before losing it. This is the closest Donovan and the US were ever to win a world tournament!
It’s football!
@@MrWise23 it's soccer
That's an insult to Iniesta, once Donovan lost his pace, his game was gone... he was one dimensional
Man I had completely forgotten about that game. I was so bummed out afterwards. People forget that game ever happened.
It's football you weirdo
I’ll never forget how much of an inspiration he was to me growing up. You’d ask me who the best player in the world was, I’d say Donovan. Definitely one of my favorite players, and American heroes
Growing up watching all the mexico vs USA games Landon was always a threat on the attack also that inspired confederation cup run
Rest In Peace Marvin Lee 🕊
He was the best american player for sure. He didn't have great spells in Europe but that loan in Everton he was amazing for them. It was shame he didn't stay with them for a longer spell. He was clutch for the national showing up in big games and scoring crucial goals.
No his not Clint Dempsey is
@@Youngcarter354 Even if Donovan never had his goal vs Slovenia, he was still better than Dempsey.
Roy Wegerle!
By all standards he didn't do well at Bayern. A lot of that was Klinsmann tho, he kept using him as an early sub at a different position every match, saw him also get just stoned by the keeper a couple times as well. Not to mention Bayern at the time was very toxic. I think Klinsmann blamed him for getting fired there and kept him off the WC team using "fitness" as an excuse to be petty.
Everton just said as soon as he got off the plane, you are playing RW, you are starting saturday and everybody has got your back here. That was all he needed from a coach.
You guys are forgetin Haward the US Goal keeper he wib Trophies at Man United.
He was an amazing football player!! He was a beast in the Confederations Cup 2009 and WC 2010
Had a hissy fit as soon as David Beckham arrived at LA Galaxy, then went to Europe and got found out pretty quickly
He was actually hero in the EPL at Everton. Just trying to help.
Landon despite his hardship was a quality player and whilst in the Premiership was clearly a underrated talent if he was playing for a top team of that era Arsenal Chelsea Man Utd no doubt premiership fans would be raving about him
No chance Lmao hahahahahaha
underrated? Yes if you were born after 2000. He was hyped up and almost every football fan knew about him back in the days. So dont say he was underrated. He just didnt live up to his potential
@@hustlecoder1673 nope I was born way before then but definitely was underrated in England not like the mass hysteria that took affect in America. Freddie Adu would still be the top of that American soccer proverbial and it would take alot to knock off top spot.
Landycakes was trash cut it out.
I don't think Landon was underrated in England at all. He had some successful loan spells at Everton and would have been welcomed with open arms but for the fact that as "The face of Major League Soccer" his transfer price was higher than English teams wanted to pay.
You should definitely make a Clint Dempsey video
Donovan was good… Dempsey was the man…
He was my favorite player growing up could’ve easily stayed at Everton and would’ve been a legend for them
As a Mexican national team I respect Donovan. I’m Mexican American and at work there’s a lot of sports heads but one time I asked who’s a great American soccer player, everyone went silent. Imagine playing your heart out for your country and not even the most sports enthusiasts give a damn to know your name.
Well, a few years ago, soccer was only the seventh most popular spectator sport in the United States, and Donovan played even earlier than that measurement was taken. I don't know what the seventh most popular sport is in Mexico, but if you mentioned the best player for Mexico in that sport, I doubt most Mexican sports fans would know the name without prompting. It also doesn't help that most American soccer fans are Premier League fans rather than MLS fans.
Damn. I agree that it does nothing for his confidence. Good comment.
Now that Mexico is out of the World Cup they can watch the US and learn some players
I would have easily said Donovan
Its because Mexicans will never try to acknowledge USA as a team and its players on any type of success in the past, present and future. In other words mexicans would rather see USA fail at soccer every single time.
Great video I grew up loving the man and was lucky enough to see his last ever game in a U.S. shirt… i will never forget him being left out of the 2014 WC squad he would’ve added so much more.
The biggest issue he had been Leverkusen didn't want him. The GM signed him, the coach threw a temper tantrum about it, and he claimed players would pass or talk to him. IMO, if he went to the right place he would have been a world class player. Of course that happens to a lot of players in this sport, especially when they go to Europe from another continent at such a young age.
What about his game made you feel he had any chance of ever being world class LOOL???
He didnt burn out he just settled. He could have played anywhere mid table in the top 5 leagues but he didn't want to deal with the stress of competing every day.
In the MLS he was *THE* guy
His loan(s) at Everton were incredible
(Particularly his first season)
He was truly respected worldwide around that time as one of the best/most underrated players in the premier league/europe
Only thing was it was a shame that he hadn't been in the premier League sooner, because he was close/getting into his 30s
He then did well at the world cup too
Really good player
Put sum respec on is name
I’m sorry but there is no way any forward who makes 17 appearances in two years and scores 2 goals can be deemed as incredible, that is the sign of an extremely poor player but then again the United States love to hype up mediocrity when it boils down to football
This is a fantastic video. Keep up the good work
Love these videos. A video on Steve Bull England's greatest striker that never was would be nice 👍
Seconded. Very loyal player.
@@yelnaw Not even a Wolves fan but what a finisher. Maybe a video on one club legends like Bully & Matt Le Tissier
He was 16 but already looked 36 at leverkusen lol
I support FMF but I always admired Landycakes, the Mexecutioner. His competitiveness is unmatched on the USMNT so far.
He was Captain America before it was called that.
He is The ACE OF USA.
This was interesting, my only rememberance of Landon was his days at Everton and also he came across as someone who was very perfeesional and serious about his football....did not know he was like this? Just shows how sometimes the small details you sometimes miss pre mass social media days.
Great video as always, didnt know Landon was this of a quality player, maybe ITS because i don't watch the MLS but those numbers are something. Btw are you gonna make a video about ganso or Leandro Damiao? Or like Players thriving in a foreign league like Andre Pierre Gignac or elkeson the CSL all time top scorer
@Channel Name bradley could be a really good video material for that
Us Mexican soccer fans hate Landon Donovan! Lol not really “hate” but he was public enemy no. 1 and made us suffer when playing against Mexico especially in 2002. One of my favorite memories was when my team- Pachuca played against LA Galaxy in 2007 I believe? Or 2008 in the Superliga final. LA Galaxy had a really good team with Beckham as the cherry on top. The game went to penalties and Landon did his usual ritual of taking what seems to be an eternity in the runup and our goalkeeper Miguel Calero (RIP Legend) blocks his penalty and tells him “no” with his finger 😂 great memories
Was so sad when the Galaxy forced him to come back from England. His time at Everton was some of my favorite memories in the EPL, waking up early on the weekend the cheer them on.
Landon Donovan- Helped USA reached the quarterfinals in the world cup since 1930. Became the first and only CONCACAF player to win the "Best Young Player" award at the world cup convincingly. Holds the all time record for most goals scored by a CONCACAF player at the world cups. Great resume if you ask me.
Great video man thanks he was great him and client
He now coaches the San Diego loyal, and my favorite memory of him is of him standing on the sideline in Birmingham as the Legion whooped their booties! HAMMER DOWN
I have very fond memories of Donavan. He was our goat growing up in the US, important goals and moments and our first wonder kid that did ok ( don’t mind Freddy Adu). We got pulisic now who greatly shadows Donavan but great memories
I’m a big fan of your content!
R.I.P. Marvin Lee 👑🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Interesting guy, in his time in England he always seemed very level-headed. Didn't realise he was pretty volatile
The PreMadonvan years were pretty awful. Ironically I think Beckham helped him. Beckham at the time for the Galaxy had pretty much gave a vibe that he'd rather be anywhere than on the LAG and he was bigger than the club (He prob was, but he wasn't in a rush to ask to cancel that contract). It alienated a lot of the players and I think Landon saw a little of himself became more of a better teammate and a leader.
@@rook1196 'premadonovan', like it 😆
Dope vid and editing! If it’s not to much to ask, a Clint Dempsey one would also hit. Only thing, you would have to say “soccer”again haha
My man literally said 'soccer' with so much pain. Respect!
The fate of the American men's soccer team was put squarely on Donavon's shoulders. His shoulders were not broad enough.
He was used out of position on every side he ever started for, aside from Arena's 2002 squad and Everton's. His natural place was wide, where he dominated every opponent he faced.
Came up right down the street in Redlands. Huge story.
Primeira vez que vejo um vídeo teu, esse sotaque não engana
Seems like it would be easy to win playing with Donavan.
I remember him trying to win against Kansas City in 2003. they were not playing good enough... and at half time he made eye contact with me while I was yelling some ideas, he went straightover to Dwayne De Rosario and started scheming some idea... and they won! the next game was for all the marbles... Champions!
Renowned in U.S. soccer, garnered praise domestically but never really achieved global acclaim. Probably one of the most famous U.S. players but fell short of being considered a legend of the game. If he’d tested himself in a European league his trajectory might have been different. Comparisons to legends like Beckham highlight the subtle difference in mental fortitude between a very, very good player and a superstar - Beckham’s unwavering dedication and focus on his game, saw him get back into the Real Madrid team when he had been completely frozen out, Donovan's several short stints in Europe shows a slightly more fragile ego - i.e. you felt Donovan needed to feel the love to play, Becks just needed a chance to get on the pitch.
Despite this minor flaw, Donovan’s impressive 57 international goals is a true testament to his talent and ability where he felt comfortable, supported / believed in.
Watched your videos for months never thought I'd see you mention Trinidad 🇹🇹 although not the best of circumstances
This guy was a class player. All time American team.
I’ve noticed since he retired that USA vs. Mexico games aren’t as spicy as they used to be. You even see the teams talking and laughing after the match.
Great guy coaches in my city now I've met him a couple times through mutuals
Can u please do a video on Keisuke Honda? My favorite Japanese player
YES PLEASE! HE WAS MY FAVORITE AT THE 2010 WC AFTER FORLAN!!
He was a legend for the LA Galaxy
I was lucky to see him in an MLS game and Landon Donovan has so much class. He does what He wants with the ball.
I was only privileged enough to see hope solo playing for Seattle and I also saw Clint Dempsey play for Seattle
There was no downfall for Donovan he is a USMNT, MLS and LA Galaxy Legend he had one hell of a career.
Going from a team in a top 3 league itw from going to the MLS is a downfall
Going from the best team in a top 3 league. Then, to a mid team from the best league to the MLS, is a downfall.
Do Rui Manuel César Costa next please and thank you.🙏
He sure made the US v Mexico rivalry great!!
People forget about John Harkes. America wasnt watching the game back then. He was the 1st to cross the pond and get it done.
That explanation of the US Olympic Development Program was funny 😆
For anyone wondering ODP is like youth national team but broken down regionally, because the country is so large. So if you’re in Los Angeles, you get called up to play for So Cal ODP, where you come in for camps every now and again, playing against other ODP regional teams in showcase games. It helps US Soccer scouts see potential talents without having to travel to thousands of small cities or tournaments where only rich kids play.
I met him when I was a kid and he played for the galaxy. I asked him for a picture in a hotel in Kansas City and he took pictures and was so nice.
He was know to be a trash talker but his goal against Algeria in the 2010 world cup is one of main reasons football or soccer is big in America.
0:45 Clint Dempsey: am I a joke to you
Calling him a European burnout is completely biased and far from reality. A very quick fact check would have found that when Everton wanted him, MLS refused to allow the transfer to take place. Prior to that at Bayern Munich, he and JK had obvious issues to where he was sent back to MLS and surprise surprise it happened again when he was cut from the world cup squad. Landon was quite open about how he was physically needing a break. His mental health was also needing something. Why? Because he was playing literally year round, with shorter breaks than most of the players on the USMNT and the pressure he had to endure over time would have stopped 99% of the players who dream of playing in the world cup. He has yet to give up his passion for the game. Burnout? LOL what a joke of a comment.
I think if he had gone back to Leverkusen after the 2002 World Cup he could've made a break through and eventually became a starting level player in 1-2 years. Shame he didn't rate himself to overcome the grind there because his profile was one that wasn't out of place particularly in their 2001/02 team (not that he would get much minutes). He could've been an understudy to Ze Roberto or Basturk for example. There would've been lots of opportunity in the few seasons after with players leaving or retiring. There's no reason to think that he couldn't have been a high EL level player at least by 2006 when you consider what peak Dempsey was doing for instance in the PL. Would need to go back and watch some of his games but I don't think it would be unreasonable to state he had more variety to his game than someone like Pulisic, he just needed a few more seasons in Europe to develop it a higher level.
He's admitting he has depression. And you call it his ego. World class.
only american about this irrelevant player
Landon is a hero.
Would love one of these about Clint Mathis!
It's very hard to say who was the best America soccer player. It's either Landon Donovan or Clint Dempsey (though of course it could be someone from the current generation when all is said and done, perhaps Pulisic or Reyna). But there's no doubt that both were very talented and played with a chip on their shoulders. It's part of what made them great players. But Donovan in particular was very controversial and just couldn't keep his mouth shut. His clashes with the Mexican team were legendary and frankly very amusing and actually overall pretty good for the sport in the US and Mexico. I still think Klinsmann leaving him off the World Cup squad was a huge mistake. But despite all the controversies, Donovan was clearly one the best and most influential sports figures in American history.
Tim Howard?
There's no world in which Pulisic or Reyna will dethrone the other two lmao. How can you compare what Donovan did internationally or Dempsey with Fulham to the other two are you stupid? For example, Mexico actually cared about playing against those two and Tim Howard, nowadays the games are glorified circus shows and both sides don't give a fuck.
Nah... Its Kasey Keller.
Mia Ham
Dempsey by a country mile. This guy was incredibly overrated.
Loved that Donovan World Cup ad
He did alright at Bayern & Everton. Too well to be a burnout.
No mention of the 2009 Confederations Cup? Pretty big moment too.
Hi can you make a video of defender story If you can?
I’m not completely sure but I feel like there wasn’t much of a blueprint for success for American players before Landon. I thought he played great in Everton so to hear them say burnout rings false.
Landon had a downfall? His career in Europe just didn’t pan out. He’s basically the greatest MLS player ever though. Heck the MVP award is named after him.
He was an awesome soccer player dude. He was totally radical in the second half of overtime in the third quarter.
He wanted to grow the game domestically club wise. He is I still think the winningest player in MLS History, and you don't win that distinction being average. He was better than David Beckham during his time at LA Galaxy, and he was still brilliant when he was loaned to Everton. Landon is not a flop, and to me, is part of why I care about the game in the first place. Him, Dempsey, and Altidore were the Golden Generation for the US from 06-14.
Donovan is still my favorite USA player of all time. Just classic American grit and fun to watch
He had a good loan spell at Everton and i was surprised they didn’t sign him.
The streets will never forget 💯
My favorite player growing up.
I believe Most Mexicans respect Landon!! As a Mexican I can say I enjoyed his play on the pitch!
should do a video on clint dempsey my boy
Definition of a “cult” hero for sure..always wondering what made him such an accomplished footballer
You should do a video on the history of the USA vs Mexico rivalry
Deep breath - ‘soccer’.
I literally cackled 😂
Thanks for taking one for the team - I know how hard that was
Exactly if it's word and guess who invented the word, the British. So quit bullying Americans for calling it soccer, you guys want us to change football to American rugby
Still the greatest US player ever... brought so many moments of brilliance especially to the National Team
Greatest American footballer, Landon Donovan
Donovan also got hate from San Jose fans when he left the club and then played for our rival, LA Galaxy. He is one of our best, but also lots of Quakes fans turned their back on him after that.
He did good in Europe though, Fredy Adu was the one who failed dismally
Yup, he is one of the must get player in master league
Excellent football player 🙌🏼
Dude Landon Donovan was just fine 😅
Mexico vs USA may be the best international rivalry in all of football. Love the crazy shit, the drink throws all of it..
He was the best we had
Past: landon Donovan
Present: Christian pulisic
Thank you
You can’t say things haven’t changed in American football since the day Donovan joined the national team. Especially US versus Mexico.
Still a legend in my eyes
Loved him at Everton, he was awesome. Shoulda stayed.
Landon touched down at Everton and tbf he wasn't to bad. Held his own
I believe Clint Dempsey is actually a dual USA top scorer with Donovan
Yes, and I believe both of them each hit the post in their last national team match to preserve the tie!
Christian Pulisic seems destined to break their mark if he just stays healthy.
Donovan is the best player in history from the USA, unlike the over valued crap that we deal with today, players now get into big teams because of pay to play agreements between mls teams and European teams
As a mexican i dont hate donovan. He gave that Mexico vs Usa a good spice!
He didn't burn out he simply was way better than everyone in his era, if he had Dempsey mixed in with this younger core they'd be pretty interesting
