      You could argue against that. Clint Dempsey, Brian mcbride, and claudio Reyna can be in that discussion. There's no doubt Donovan was more talented than these guys but these guys did it MLS, Europe, for country and were non stop workers. Donovan quit in Europe a few times and took breaks from the game.

    Even if Dempsey breaks Landon's goal record it won't change the fact that Landon has made soccer in America grow, he's one of the main reasons the MLS is growing every year and LD will probably be the greatest player in American history for the impact he's made on our country and the MLS. Thank You LD.

When i heard the name Landon Donovan, i got curious and decided to look him up. I do not regret that decision one bit, because i recall saying "this is who i wanna be." Since that day, i have continued to play.

      futebolista fã da América Right before the World Cup, we set up the most chances of all in the MLS. This was him in a slump. Before that, he was quoted as playing the best soccer of his career. He received a bid from AC Milan. He also annihilated Mexico to send the USA to the World Cup. He also has a mental illness, which is not joking matter.
      Don't you think that Klinsmann should have figured out how to motivate his best weapon rather than dispose of him and bring in a bb gun instead?

      @christophergomez6131 Před 9 lety +4

      Jurgen knows what he's doing. That was the best decision for the team. It's Donovan's fault he took a break from the game and was in terrible form for Galaxy. He just wasn't working hard enough and he thought he was an automatic roster spot and it back fired. The usmnt did fine without him. It's sad to say but it the honest truth. Donovan is a legend but his time is done and he's retiring now just face it and get over it. This team is playing much better under klinsmann than they did with bob bradley so be greatful we have a good coach

    • @alamoaggie
      @alamoaggie Před 9 lety +1

      Chris, no one has said the Klinnsman isn't a good coach. in my opinion there are some things he does great, and others that leave people scratching their heads. i'll give him this much: he does have a way of surprising you. he puts in John Brooks, who had shown horribly with the team, and who would have thought he'd score what turned out to be our tournament saving goal? obviously Klinnsman deserves credit and he may be takign the team to new heights, but that being said, i think we the right to wonder if our best scorer and assist-deliverer in history could have a made a difference on a team that was highly lacking in set piece delivery (one of our few strengths) and depth at left midfield, evne if it was just as a second half spark plug. it was clear from day one that klinnsman and donovan had a rocky relationship, and yes, he wasn't in the best of shape, but cut donovan some slack. he'd been playing nonstop for this country since he was 17. that's a lot of devotion right there. he also couldn't have been thrilled with the team hiring a coach who as an ESPN analyst had been hating on him for years (klinnsman's son made it pretty clear that he had talked smack about donovan behind his back). the bottom line is there is no way of knowing if donovan would have made a difference in this tournament, but it's fair to wonder if he could have provided morethan someone like timmy chandler or julien green (who you might recall are german-american, and klinnsman has an automatic bias for them).

      Donovan has rocketed the goal in the top corner so many times in his career. Most famously against Slovenia.
      But as Alamoaggie also pointed out, our wing play was our weakness. Outside of 15 minutes from Julian Green and when DeAndre Yedlin was deployed as a winger, there were no standouts. Bedoya, Zusi, Davis... they all struggled to deliver.
      Donovan was the counter king, the best passer, the best crosser, the fastest thinker, the smartest player.... we could have used that creativity.
      Last year he played so well that AC Milan gave him a bid. He had a minor bump in his form, missed the WC squad, then picked it up again and is ripping the MLS apart with the most assists and goals ever. Form is temporary, class is permanent. We could have used him.

  • @NotoriousYeshi

    I can never understand why Donovan is hated as much as he is... he never went to jail, never beat on his wife, never shitted on his teammates, he seems to be a standup guy and mostly everyone who knows him has spoken well about him...
    He gets alot of grief because he made choices in his life that made him happy..he didnt stay in the bundesliga because he couldnt get acclimated to German way of life...unless you're from southern california, you could never understand why he chose sunny california over Germany or Europe..
    he had two successful loans to Everton, played well in limited number of games, and gained the respect of Moyes, his teammates and especially the Everton fanbase..most of whom would speak very well of Landon's time at Goodison Park
    he chose to stay in MLS and help it grow..its obviously in a better place than it was 15 years ago,and it will continue to grow and get better, and in the near future we'll start to see an infux of quality players produced through the academy system.. I think in 20 years his staying in MLS will be more appreciated than it is now

Soccer and MLS is the only sport and league I follow and it is so hard to find friends and family to have that same passion, but when I meet that person with the same interest it is such a genuine find. So when I say my heartbreaks it truly feels like a break up from a relationship, because you are parting ways with someone you have followed and loved for many years. He has also helped me built new lasting friendships so it just shows how much Donovan is an iconic figure whom has helped grow this sport in America. To me and my soccer friends we have gotten front row seats to see the growth and change he has done to this country. Love Soccer, especially Int'l Soccer and Top-quality domestic leagues, but Average = Trash = MLS, that is the problem. It would be easier to find friends that like MLS if it was a better league but we have jackasses running the league who won't take the training wheels off, and selfish owners who don't care about the necessity of improving the league as much as they do filling their pockets. Landon by himself and guys like Beckham could only do so much for the league.

      tulio J. cosma Yes some people are like that and will support their country's product no matter what, thinking their money will help. But don't forget, things are different here in the US. Don't ignore the concept of American exceptionalism ("we're better than everyone else, or SHOULD BE better"). Here's another related idea: some people here only want what one thinks is the best thing available. "If the product ain't the best, or among the best, it's irrelevant or unwanted". This is the same reason some people only buy Japanese or German cars, or watch Anime with subs over Dubs or purely American cartoons. Not everyone will support something just because it was "made in America" if they think it's not up to snuff, they don't want it until it is. That's the way things are up here.
      As for me, I'm no authority but if I thought MLS was doing good and was run WELL, I'd be following it too. If I felt the best players residing in our country were playing in MLS instead of slipping through the cracks like this Miguel Ibarra guy (all I see is average/physical play MOST of the time,with mostly decent foreigners worth looking at that are better than most of our average natives, few natives like Nguyen with some skill to make me wonder if they'll flourish in Europe and with the USMNT like Dempsey or fail like Zusi)and making MLS comparable to at least South America or even Mexico, maybe then i'd start watching regularly (only CCL progess vs Mexican clubs will define this, IMO). If our players were coached correctly from childhood to a European standard, then my following of my fellow American players would not be limited to just the guys in top Euro leagues or the USMNT, but a more respectable, elite MLS. But hey everyone has their own opinion, taste, or eye for talent. I occasionally follow from a distance and have a slight interest in my local team because of Henry and Cahill, though they are poorly run, like the NY Jets just with a foreign company for an owner(ugh) which limits my interest in ever taking them seriously. The league improves every year, but is it at THAT level yet? Not quite. I'll wait, just from afar.

      KenDaKingArrives well yes. It matter of taste. I dont watch England league, because i really want to watch live soccer. In stadium, I rather watch any inferior league in stadium then very good one on tv. I bought season tickets for nycfc. Mls can be way better then any league in the world, but us the fan can make that possible. Fifa want soccer in usa get better because they now the big money is here. With nycfc and orlando city joining the league for the next season. And Atlanta in 2017 and sacramento doing some good stuffs for a spot in mls. Things are changing about soccer in usa

Yes jones made errors too but Donovan is our heart of the team I feel really down though because he's only 32 and leaving he is the sole reason why I still play today all throughout high school , The passion and everything I felt because of L.D I think him not making the team broke his heart and it just wasn't the same. I've done this 1000x and it never sits in with haters so I'll just sum up a quick argument.
      1) Hugo Sanchez has 29 goals for Mexico. He's regarded as one of the best ever. Donovan has 57 goals, and he has more goals than Dempsey without penalties. Donovan has 15 penalties. Dempsey trails Donovan by 18 goals.
      2) Before this WC, Donovan had more goals than Messi, Ronaldo, Ibra, Rooney, Drogba combined. 5 that is, with an additional one counted as an own goal.
      3) The challenge he took was to inherit the duty of yanking the MLS upward on it's growth, which essentially will produce future American talents. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but the previous American league crashed. The MLS was desperate, and him staying and him still being the American hero significantly helped it grow and become stable to the point that it is today. I would have loved for him to stay in Europe, but carrying the burden of bettering the future is a good option too.
      4) He showed what he could do at the WCs, and he went to Everton twice and annihilated just to show he can do it. He put up 2 goals and 6 assists in a month. That's David Silva numbers. He had a similar experience again. He also won Player of the month.
      5) He has 58 assists. The second most assists is Cobi Jones, at 22. Clint Dempsey has 12.
      6) You will thumbs down these videos because you are an unprecedented hater who has no reason to hate the most influential player in the growth of American soccer but chooses to do so again, for no reason.
      7) This is about celebrating a legend of US soccer. Nowhere is this stating he's bigger than the team. And in case you're unaware, EVERY other country on Earth celebrates their legends.
