Why is Bali such a popular tourist attraction? Maybe it's all the floating heads with their guts hanging out! It's the crazy 1981 Indonesian cult classic "Mystics In Bali"!

The witch is Rangda from Balinese mythology. She's basically the master of the leyaks and the embodiment of evil. She's in endless battle with the embodiment of good, Barong (that dog-like dragon thing you see in Balinese parades). This movie seems to be her recruiting a new witch slave by seducing her with black magic and the guy in white at the end is an avatar of Barong.
Meaning that it's still more faithful to ancient tradition than, say, Hercules or Passion of the Christ
So like Baba Yaga
Wait were are from Bali ?
Uuuh i think Barong is more of a panther like creature rather then a dog/dragon
@@m.sydneyvern2260 Still looks like a pupper to me!
The star of this movie, Ilona Bastian, was a German tourist who had never acted before and was paid... with an extension of her vacation. Apparently, the wife of one of the producers met her by chance, befriended her, and hired her as the female lead.
She never worked as an actor again. She went on vacation in Bali, somehow got talked into starring in a weird horror movie, stayed a little longer than planned, and went home. Four decades later, thousands watch videos about the movie on the internet. _What a story, Mark!_
Eight years later, something quite similar happened to Barbara Constable, a former dancer from Australia who had to change careers because of a leg injury, became a fashion model in Hong Kong, and somehow ended up in "Lady Terminator" - also her one and only movie. Also made in Indonesia in the 1980s. Also a staple on "so bad, it's good" movie review CZcams channels.
2:43 That's a real human skull. That woman casually lifted it and smell it?
It's a cemetery, an open cemetery to be more precise. The dead didn't buried or cremated, they were just laid under the Menyan tree (Taru Menyan). The tree have a unique smell which hides the smell of rotting corpses under it. The village is called Terunyan, from the name of the tree, Taru Menyan.
Yeah, it's the charnel ground, the śmaśān. Not a cemetery where people are buried. They're just placed there. Eventually some get cremated, others aren't.
I kept expecting the witch to ask them what is their favourite color and how fast a swallow can fly with coconuts tied to it. :D
What....is the maximum speed velocity of a swallow?
Wrong creepy mystic! XD
"What...is the air speed velocity of a flying head with the organs still attached?"
@@piplup2009 European or African?
Or the capitol of Assyria.
15:20 As an Indonesian I can confirm that my family has a decent number of wizards.
Hey I remember this monster! My brother ran a Dungeons and Dragons game that featured a floating head with guts - a Penanggalan
It's apparently a real mythological supernatural creature in Indonesia.
The pope popping up was a real twist for me. Sis not see that coming at all
Nice
@@JW666 really? I always thought a Penanggalan was some dude from Norwich
@@unownbob123 Yep.
I kinda wish Sam Raimi would remake this
I didnt know i needed that in my life but now i reeeeally do!
Same
Love the monster she turns into, with all organs hanging out. I had a book growing up, about different folklore monsters, and that's one of them that was in the book.
I'll do you one better-that type of vampire showed up briefly in a AWESOME but short-lived comic called Witch Doctor.
I had that same kind of book too
It’s called a Penanggalan
4:06 What is your name? What is your quest? What is your favorite color?
Blue. Wait yel-
What.. is the wind velocity of an unladen swallow!
African or Indonesian?
Well... I don't know (witch with long fingernails flies into the air) AHHHHH!
RED
I am Arthur, King of the Britons!
@@louisduarte8763 King o' the who?
Erm...this reminds me of the Penanggalan. Some interesting things about how to stop/detect them:
1. If you find the body turn it around so when the person returns it will be facing the wrong way.
2. Pour glass down it's neck cavity and it will die on re-entry.
3. To protect a person giving birth and preventing Penanggalan from entering cover your windows and doors with thorned plants.
4. Apparently Penanggalan have to coat their bodies in vinegar so you can tell if they are truly a Penanggalan if they constantly smell like that...or I don't know...poor hygiene.
I can go on, buuuut, yeah there you go! *flies away*
Stories Fables and Ghostly Tales It is the pennangalan. Different language's name for the same monster.
Fantastic - the similarities were just uncanny! There are so many names for this particular creature. I'm not 100% sure, but I think another name I a "Horla" but it was long ago when I read that.
Hey, I think we'll all agree, as long as the Leakk in this movie doesn't bear resemblance to Lamia, we're ok.
xD Agreed - but I mean, Penannggalan have information on them about "devouring children" so it's really close. Super creepy stuff!! For anyone who wants to pick up on Jeffrey DeCristofaro's info (great reference) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamia
For sure!! I'm trying to remember this film where a child wanders in a Japanese forest and he encounters all sorts of original Japanese mythical creatures. If I find it I'll let you all know.
hey Brandon I'm from Indonesia and I'll suggest another weird Indonesian horror tittle called "Pocong vs Kuntilanak" I guess its the equivalent of "Freddy vs Jason" as if in they are both featuring 2 classic horror icon from their country, I don't mind if there is no dub version and I bet it will be more hilarious.
sry for the bad English
P.S Pocong vs Kuntilanak only get 2.2/10 rating on IMDb
-Tokusatsu Man- Nah, he must review pengabdi setan (the old one), i forget the english title.
@@49Shadow Satan's Slaves is the English title.
2.2/10 on IMDb is a mark of honor
One thing I’ve noticed about a lot of these foreign dubbed films is that the English casts consist of Hong Kong dubbers who’ve dubbed Godzilla films. The uncle who gives the protagonist the dagger is voiced by Rik Thomas who voice acted in literally every Japanese Godzilla film dubs from 1989 to 2004.
Wait wait wait. So this movie is trying to say finding an evil witch to teach your girlfriend how to use evil magic is a bad thing? Way to break my suspention of disbelief.
Did you already unleash the evil over the land?
Also, the evil witch sounds like Aughra from The Dark Crystal if she's drunk.
@@nicholaslienandjaja1815 I was thinking Rita Repulsa from power rangers.
James Rolfe, also known as the Angry Video Game Nerd, introduced me to this mind screw of a horror movie from his Monster Madness series.
"I'm starting to think I put in Indonesian King Kong by mistake"
Well in the original movie Skull Island was close to Sumantra, so that would be appropriate
really?
@@pyzzabox6574 yup
Fun fact: There was an obscure 90s-early 2000s Indonesian kids' soap opera called Kingking Sahabatku (My Friend Kingking), which featured a little boy who befriended a gorilla (portrayed by a guy in a terrible gorilla suit). I saw some episodes as a kid. They were AWFUL.
Hang on, she vomits up a LIVE MOUSE and he thinks it might be something she ate last night!? *jus walks away*
They don't have DineSafe in Indonesia yet, I guess.
10:09 The Indonesian duck face had killed me 😂😂😅
Never mind, they turn into bread sticks that turn into pythons anyways.
There was a similar problem with Wes Craven's "Shocker"-- everyone acted like the batshit insane stuff in that movie happened every other Tuesday. It really takes you out of the movie.
Given as that one was made by Wes Craven, pretty sure that was intentional. Here it was bad acting and dubbing.
When it's done right like in Suspiria that kind of disproportionate reaction can really add to the movie. It gives off a very dreamlike vibe. Even in garbage like Mystics in Bali the atrocious acting, ADR, writing, cinematography, FX and editing give it a surreal edge.
I was hoping you'd do this one, this makes most Japanese movies look tame
The underacting is hilarious
Thomas Wightman: Godfrey Ho would have to be brought to battle these demons.
@@lordinquisitor6233 even funnier in the original version, the female actor speaks like Siri
By Sigmar! This movie is pure Tzeentch insanity!
I second Sam Raimi directing a remake of this movie. Possibly with Bruce Campbell playing the badass final uncle.
"Can you guess what happens next?"
had me rolling lmao
I guess this could be called folkore horror. In any case it's much more interesting than the umpteenth slasher movie.
Slashers basically are folklore horror. They're urban legends, which are explorations of contemporary social mores and fears.
That said, yeah, usually very little meat left on those bones by, say, the 5th sequel.
3:38 "Ah, Noob Saibot! Long time no see, how's Sareena?"
Katherine transforms into a *penanggalan,* or a vampire that appears as a floating head with all its organs hanging from it. The *mananaggal* of the Philippines is a similar monster but it detaches its upper torso instead of just its head and has wings
Shouldn't be surprised about the Penanggalan....haven't you noticed how every folklore has some kind of explanation as to why a baby (or pregnancy) suddenly disappears? It's like someone has to cover their tracks or something.
The guy who dubbed over Mahindra's uncle did voice work for like every Kaiju movie.
And the guy dubbing the evil witch sounds like Aughra from The Dark Crystal if she drank too many whiskey.
Before watching video: Let's see if Brandon has learned what penanggalan is, at least he mentions them in description :D
I would kind of like to see this remade
With Sam Raimi directing it ;) =)
this was a fantastic film, a great episode Brandon on par with the best of the year for you, thank you very much for this amazing!
The witch is a Kuntinalak. Go research about it in Indonesian horror folklore. xD
also. i do advise watching the Indonesian trilogy Kuntinalak.
you know.... Brandon... you should do a review for the 2 movies called "Ar tejuun pegantin" or something like that, directed by rizal montavani. it should give laughs to us all xD
I'd always understood that the flying vampire head with organs is called a penangalan.
yes it is. I meant the witch. the old fart. xD
she is represented as a Kuntinalak
Genomcyber She's not Rangda?
I think you got the wrong creature.
I took anthropology of Indonesia in college. I recognize some of of the mythical figures-the witch Rangda, the flying head vampire monster (Penanggalan), etc, but that doesn't make them any less insane.
Does this count as a ripoff of the Craft? American Werewolf in London? Exorcist?
Yeah, we have some weird monsters in Indonesia.
I see a lot of overlap with Malay and Filipino monsters, too. The stories probably traveled around by trade.
There was some mention of the The Craft 2 movie - a sequel to the original (original featuring Robin Tunney.)
Also, the only pig shapeshifter I know of from Indonesia is Babi Ngepet
AFAIK, this kind of black magic also practice in Kalimantan, Malaysia, and Thailand. And that 2 fireball called Banaspati, very ferocious evil entity.
Why do I think of MontyPython with the witch? "What is your quest?"
''Propably one of the most internationally known indonesian movies...''
*The Raid 1 & 2: are we a joke to you Brandon?!*
Those movies where indonesian? Thought they where from Japan.
Fun fact: Mad Dog from that movie is a meme in Indonesia (the Indonesian equivalent of Chuck Norris Facts is Mad Dog Facts).
@@JW666 Pretty sure they are Indonesian movies, considering Joe Taslim is in it and that Asian stunt guy who seems to be in every Asian action movie in last 15 years. You know the guy, he's one of the two Asian dudes that fight John Wick in third movie.
Movies which are so bad they're hilarious like this one bring the needed laughter into life. And cynical reviews from Brandon spices up the fun even more.
This is by far my all time favorite goofy floating head and guts baby eating movie. I learned everything I know about Indonesia from this movie
*comment about Godzilla because it's a famous monster franchise, and would A: give us what we want and B: Kaijus are just cool*
Before watching this, I read up on Balinese mythology, though I had a superficial exposure to it previously. I read about some wild fucking shit (which I recommend reading the entry on Leyak on Wikipedia before watching this video, as it will make slightly more sense), which I never expected to see for myself, but appears in this film. This is not that kind of stuff you want to see at all, and NOT the kind of exposure that would make a favorable impression of Bali on people or make them want to visit there.
Having said that, you should DEFINITELY visit Bali.
Found out about this film a few days ago, found it in YT, for free as well, who’d have thought!!! It’s fucking brilliant. Wild
i think i watch this in theater when i was in elementary, i am shock someone actually dub this kind of movie to english.
Btw this kind of movie is categorized as "silat" movie, silat is the named of a martial art genre, in indonesia folklore silat is not far from magic and shit
I remember this movie being reviewed on Cinemassacre a few years ago.
MisterTutor2010 can you link the video?
czcams.com/video/Lu54dDKXu7Y/video.html
I first heard of it 2 or 3 years ago from MovieBob's Schlocktober episodes of In Bob We Trust.
7:13 Didn't one of those dance with Rudolf Nuryev on The Muppet Show?
2:33 As Jake Peralta once said, "OOH, self burn! Those are rare."
And the wizard fight near the end there could have used some Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat sound effects.
7:17 it reminds me of "babi ngepet" yes according to the myth pig ngepet likes to steal money usually when you become a pig ngepet there must be 2 people one of them is guarding the candle the other is in action now the important point is you can't let the candle go out if it goes out you will become a pig forever
that leyak witch was more like if Aughra from Dark Crystal was played by a human
She even almost sounds like her, too! Jeez, the next episode of Age of Resistance really IS getting weirder.....
I was thinking Meg Mucklebones from Legend
you are really spoiling us lately brandong :D :D i'm lovin it
4:46 that has got to be one of the earliest attempts at 3d special effects in a movie
What were they smoking when they wrote/made this movie? DANG!!
Arnulfo Cantarero Indonesia marijuana, dude. :)
I believe it! It seems they didn't take a break, this movie is way out there
@@Madbandit77 Definitely, since that's very popular in the seedy sides of Bali.
Any chance of a review of Mechanical Violator Hakaider or Shin Kamen Rider?
Too much feathers for Brandon, I guess.
Any tokusatsu films would be great to see
Xombie Onizuka what about Hanuman and the five Riders?
Xombie Onizuka I agree
Xombie Onizuka '
The most nonchalant characters in a movie.
I was wondering if you can check out an Indonesian movie called Rama Superman?
Seems everyone in this movie is using the Lance Fuller Non-Acting method of acting, cross reference with MST3k episode 808 to better understand.
My boat.
From his book "Do not Act"
Love you Brandon! I’m seriously addicted to your reviews. I’m averaging 3-6 reviews per week .... please keep producing more of them .... you are the best
Hahaha Mahendra is in the devil's sword too he is the husband that gets taken
Brandon good to see you.
In the original Indonesian audio, Cathy is actually Australian.
That pig monster transformation scene will forever play out in my nightmares.
Then you'll probably want to skip the transformation sequence in Return to Nuke Em High. The one with the 2 heroines. LOL
9:12 It's called the Krasue.
Dude you should seriously review lady terminator. Words can't describe that movie either.
Hi Brandon
very entertaining as always. thanks
A review of the Shaw Bros films Black magic 1 and 2 might be good if you ve not seen the. Great vids by the way, keep up the good work.
11:50 best line of the movie (and that's saying something), and I had EXACTLY the same reaction as you XD
I LOVE this movie!!! Got to watch it for real. Have you done any "Women in Prison" movies, like "Women in Cages"?
1:14 oh look a Indonesia ewok
The bones that they see . Theres a place in Bali where dead people are not buried but just put them on a tree. But thats years ago I mean the years when kings rule before ww1 and ww2 before the civil war and nukes
I guess most of Southeast Asia have a legend like the Leyaks. In the Philippines they are called Manananggal. They split at the waist and their tongues bore into pregnant women's stomachs to eat the babies. You put salt on the legs so they can't reform.
If she already knows voodoo... yep, sure she needs another witch to telll her how to magic xD maybe Indonesian magic has only mono-blue devotion 3 spells
The Artist mostly referred to as Holder539 She's multi-classing.
And got an undead template to boot
16:55 So what was once an utter embarrassment of Indonesian cinema has now become one of the country's most well-known film productions outside its own borders? How's that for irony? XD
This was considered an embarrassment!? HOW? This shit is awesome!
Were babies all the flying head with it's organs hanging out eating? Hmmm?
Brandon, you really have to consider taking a look at some movies from India, particularly the ones from South India. They may not be so wtf in terms of effects and monsters and fantasy stuff, but trust me, they are pretty bonkers!
Woh!
Brandon tenold RIP Haruo Nakajima. REVIEW A GODZILLA MOVIE IN HIS HONOR. PLZ!!!
LOL it's two countries above Guatemala!
Who are you ?
The Pope
Who do you think it is ! LOL
Another great review, had me laughing all the way again
Apparently they thought it was some OTHER Indonisian witch.
This is why we love Brandon's reviews so much. Some guys might get lucky and have the occasional video that's funny but Brandon is so good at this type of humor and he's funny as hell with all the little quips he puts in them and this is the reason we all love this guy so much! Brandon is genuinely funny and I eagerly await each and every release he puts out there because his work is so consistently hilarious. We're really lucky to have this guy!
I peed a second time after that line LOL
I totally agree, he's one of the funniest and wittiest reviewers out there, i see others trying to emulate this style and they fail miserably , not because they are bad but because it takes a special skill to come up with these jokes , make them flow within the context of the review, and to make it all seem so effortless , like he's really doing all of this on the fly , all casual .
After all these years i'm still in awe at how consistently funny he can make any review he does . The quips come so fast and are so frequent that sometimes you don;t even have time to laugh until it sinks in :)
Good god that was insane. The depths of exploitation never cease to amaze...
Nice vid dude
I've played enough SMT games to recognize Rangda and Barong when I see them.
11:00 that has to be the most extreme game of Conkers I've ever seen.
I do believe a female Yoda would be called a ho-da.
im surprised a "big trouble in little china" reference never made it in your video :)
Speaking of detachable heads, "Zeiram" live action maybe?
have you covered 1987's ARENA?
My only complaint about this video is your "peyote addict" line peyote isn't addictive. But I get the joke and obviously you got your point across so well done sir. This is one totally fucked up movie and you did a great job riffing it.
A classic for sure
That pig gave me life !
If anyone at Ubisoft had seen this movie, Far Cry 3 would have been a very different game...
Damn... I'm Indonesian and I've never heard of this one
That shirt is epic. It might even be a cult classic.
7:23 ok so i believe that thats an indonesian ghost called babi ngepet and it's basically this humanoid pig guy you summon to steal someones money
Hi, from Indonesia
Most probably the Indonesian people are used to have floating head monsters 🤗😋
God I'm a nerd... I am watching this on while waiting in a really long lime to get in to Adequate Bimboes panel in Worldcon75.
Why is the demon witch sound like doctor girlfriend from The Venture Brothers
Sometimes ya just gotta have some Tenold to shake things loose
So I was deployed to Turkey, and the rec tent had a bunch of horrible movies to sign out. We ran across "Lady Terminator" from Indonesia. Between the incoherent plot and the reuse of a bunch of footage, it was gloriously bad!
What about Yokai Monsters, Along with Ghosts,- Yokai Monsters One Hundred Monsters, and Yokai Monsters, Spook Warfare. Suitable for your channel I think.
And The Great Yokai War as well, along with the live action adaptation of GeGeGe no Kitaro (all made in Japan).
This movie is crazy.
that tshirt at 7:43 is so sick
uhh...
talking about flying head with organs thingy that eats babies
