As a Mexican i can say I LOVE this movie, it’s so accurate, they did such a good job in representing our culture. Also a fun fact is that the dog is a xoloitzcuintli, that breed in Mexican culture is meant to guide the dead to the Mictlán, the underworld and whenever they get a new spot in their body is another soul that they’ve guided, that’s why Dante is such an important character

When I was little I used to call my grandma “abuelita coco”( her name was socorro.) she had dementia and she passed away this June due to a number of health complications. That dead stare into nothingness is all to familiar for me. In her last few days alive my grandma seemed to regain her mental clarity probably due to the pain and discomfort she was feeling. she knew she was dying and she didn’t want to be alone. I could go on and on rambling but I’ll cut it short here. I love this movie so much.
Edit: one of my strongest memories of my grandma now is this time when all of my cousins, my grandma , and I were sitting in my front yard. My cousin was asking her questions seeing what she could remember. Then he said “you know we love you grandma” and her response was “ I can’t remember who you guys are but I love you guys too”

Yay, the movie that makes everyone ugly cry!
Dawn I'm surprised you hadn't seen this one yet! Every time I watch it I always marvel at the depth of details in every frame, and the character designs and movements. It's all so breathtaking: the use of color, how the guitars are accurately played and every background character is unique, even the ends of the bones show wear. And I LOVE the musica, from the intro con Mariachis, to how it's essentially a musical, but the songs are integrated so organically because the story itself focuses on music.
And since you'll probably watch it again, I highly recommend checking the Español version sometime, you can still use the English audio but a lot of text and signs will be in Spanish, and it uses Carlos Rivera's "Recuérdame" for the end credits instead of the English pop version of the song.

There are lots of vids online of sufferers who are closed in, basically nonverbal, nonresponsive - but they'll slip a pair of headphones on these people and play them music from their youth, and they just BLOSSOM. I know this is already a month old, but I just wanted to point out some stuff.
De La Cruz is based on Pedro Infante, probably the biggest icon in mexican pop culture, he was an actor and great singer, luckily he wasn't a bad guy like De La Cruz, at least that I know of.
Dante, the dog is a Xoloitzcuintle, a race of dog who has no hair and aztecs believed that their purpose was to lead people to Mictlán, the other world.
The orange flowers are called Cempasúchil, we use it on the altars, because of their bright color and beautiful smell they're supposed to make a path so the spirit of your love ones can find its way back home.
Also, the cat with wings is an alebrije, they're basically chimeras, you usually make them as a decoration. They're very colorful and have different combinations of animals.

Since you're interested in where the forgotten go, "The Book of Life" (2014), is another computer-animated kids movie about the day of the dead that talks more about the worlds in the afterlife and the mythos. It was also produced by native Mexican Guillermo del Toro. While it's not as touching as Coco, it's still pretty good.

    • @andresandrade3312
      @andresandrade3312 Před 3 lety +1

In my opinion that one it's better...
Because "coco" was made to get to an international audience (they wanted something easy to sell and not that much complicated to get related to it / touch)
And "the book of life" was made to get to Mexicans and those who already know El día de los muertos (after the Spanish arrived)
And "remember" / tell them and try to get them interested abut the believes of the natives.
The brief representation of the levels of Mictlan was really good and also the other information of it

    • @aznmochibunny

@@cmoeller3 As far as I know, Coco was long in production before Book of Life, Book of Life just got released first. Ironically though, since Disney bought FOX, Book of Life is now in the Disney+ library. But the reason why people think Coco ripped off Book of Life was the theme of Day of the Dead and Mexican culture tying them.

This Film is a Master Piece , love it when I saw it on theaters, an love how Disney actually got EL Dia De Los Muertos so Right ( Day of The Death). This tradition has been around since the Aztecs. Don't matter how strong you can be it will get you , it does. So Beautiful an Masterful.

Well not exactly, I mean it did came way before the Spanish came to America....
But this is not exactly "right" if we're talking about Aztecas, toltecas, mayas mexicas and others.
If I wanted to say that a movie got el día de los muertos right it has to be "the book of like" they did got a really good representation of the day before the merged.
Really like the little wink to the "Mictlan" and it's levles.

I know it’s stupid bc it’s a kids movie but this movie made me proud of my culture and not be ashamed of it simply bc I wanted to feel American and fit in. One can be American and have a completely different culture and that’s ok. It took me so many years to realize that

Nah, you are being hard on yourself. I don't find it stupid. Everywhere can be a learning experience. Feel free to share your culture in America. America is a melting pot. Many Americans are fascinated with learning other cultures. I'm glad you learned this - spread your wisdom.
