And that's basically the extent of we know about him: fresh-off-the-boat French immigrant and white.
My great-grandmother was an incredibly strong, smart (though barely educated, as many black women were back in the day) and coureagous woman who started again from nothing to get her family through. She cyleaned houses and learned trades and, in the end, her and all of her children ended up thriving: some were successful busines owners, my grandfather was the first in his family to get a university degree, etc...so the joke's on the lazy loser who got left behind.

It was definitely a love letter to Mexico. I'm Mexican and when I heard this was coming out I was wary, especially since I live in Mexico and the story was going take place in present-day Mexico, which is a setting that Hollywood somehow never really seems to portray right (they're reductive at best and stereotypical at worst)...but I was sooo wrong! This turned out to be one of my favorite movies. They nailed it! It was critically acclaimed here too and beat all box-office records.
I also took my parents to the theater (they're oldheads who still think animation is exclusively for children) and my dad cried! He still talks about "Coco" to this day. What a beautiful film!

    Some interesting cultural details!
Spirit animals are based on traditional Mexican figures of papier-mĂąchĂ© and wood, called alebrijes (in the beginning Miguel runs near the street stall, full of them, we can even see a small toy of Pepita). They have bizarre shapes, bright colours an it’s’ own fesivals. The artist, who made them first, had seen them in a fever dream, in a strange land he was wandering while being between life and death.
Now, Dante. He belongs to the old breed of bald sacred dogs called xolo, or xoloitzcuintle. Aztecs, who are partly ancestors of Mexicans, believed xolo were spirit guides of souls in the land of the dead. Also, his name is obviously reference to Divine Comedy, the same theme from Europe) Of course Miguel didn’t know that, he just named stray dog with name of De La Cruse’s horse from old movie, cause he was big fan- but creators of Pixar are really smart guys.
Architectures. You can see, City of the Dead has many layers. It’s constantly growing up- and more down means more ancient. And the first layer is all Aztec. All Flower Bridges lead to massive stone pyramids, laying in the base of town, and the well, where Ernesto has thrown Hector and Miguel is full of idols.
This movie is really great with details. It makes it’s own mifology, but also has big cultural base. And I don’t even start talking about emotions now!
 Truly masterpiece.
Maybe you will be interested in another animated movie about the Day of the Dead, called “ Book of life”. It has lots of similarities with Coco, but this is time , when there was no stealing- just strange coincidence, we can see it by expiration dates of both movies. Despite that similarities, Coco and Book both have their own faces and paths, so I really recommend you to pay attention, it can be very interesting

5:15 Exactly - and her mother, Mama Coco, the daughter who was also left behind still gets upset whenever he's mentioned - we hear later her sounding like a little girl again asking 'Papa is home? Papa is coming home?' and how upset she was when the photo was broken and she was saying 'papa! papa!'
I mean yes, it was the wrong way to do it, to never mention him, that didn't make anything better, and we saw in the end how happy she was remembering singing with her father, but at the time you gotta remember Elena just doesn't want her mother to be upset and clearly looked up to her grandmother.

I love this movie, and I loved your reaction to it, especially as the father of little girls... I can imagine how much harder HĂ©ctor's story hits.
The way the spirit animals strike me is that they've kind of been taken out of the life/death continuum--Pepita and Dante can cross back and forth and are part of both worlds.
For Imelda, I think she must have held onto her rage to just keep going through life as a single woman, trying to run a business through a very turbulent time in an era when she probably would have been expected to remarry... by this point, it would have been so much a part of her self-image that it would be hard to let go of. She presumably asked HĂ©ctor not to go on tour, but he did anyway and ended up never coming back, so it was still an abandonment to her eyes, and it would take a little time to re-conceptualize it.
I love that this movie starts out in the cliché place--"Oh, sure, Miguel is the family rebel who will bring music back and get away from the clutches of his strict family," but instead of going down that path, it has him figure out that they are more important to him than music, and learn that they love him and he loves them, and it's only when the family is put back together that the curse on music is ended.
To make the scene where HĂ©ctor and Coco sing together even sweeter, young Coco was voiced by the daughter of the actor who played HĂ©ctor.

I like your comment, just one little clarification on the animals thing: Dante is a special kind of dog called Xoloitzcuintle, which is originally from MĂ©xico, and our ancestors had this legend that said the Xoloitzcuintles were guide animals that helped you through this world to the other, while Pepita and the other colorful animals are called Alebrijes, that are practically colorful animal parts combined together in a way of art, normally being made as sculptures here, i don't know much about Alebrijes tho, i can't remember if they were originated by a legend or something like that, but both of them are part of Mexican culture.

@@claudiayarizethochoamungui1055 I read a little about alebrijes (I went on a fanfic-writing binge after this and went into research mode) and it seemed like they came from an artist's dream, and the name "alebrije" was kind of what he heard them saying. Then again, he may have had the idea floating around his head before he dreamed them; the articles didn't say. I had the impression that, movie-wise, this particular xolo dog also became an alebrije, but yes, he could cross back and forth before, and was Miguel's guide long before he changed colors. (When Miguel says "I have to find my great-great-grandfather," Dante leads him straight to HĂ©ctor... not to mention the fact that he could cross at all! He definitely had the xolo magic going on before the transformation.)

I always cry because my grandma passed away 2 years ago and as some have mentioned, the representation of Mexican grandmas is on point, so we all see our own grandma in mama Coco in some way or another. It is a very emotional movie, but DĂa de Muertos is actually a celebration. But he did regret his decision and tried to come back when the life he expected didn’t live up to his expectations and he realized he missed his family more. She has every right to be upset at him. Leaving your wife and child alone is bad enough, but, especially so back then, when they were young, where it’s hard for a woman to make a living. Because Imelda is who she is, she did it, but, raising a child alone is easy for no one. Regardless of the reason your partner left.
Edit: yeah, she definitely didn’t know he was murdered, let alone by De La Cruz. All she knows is that he left and never came back. Remember, they had no real way of contacting family and he was in a entirely different city.

30:16 _i think people don't actually understand Imelda's side/point of view of the whole situation & why she refused to forgive him right away._ - i mean, yes he got killed & wasn't his fault but still they had a child, a family, Imelda probably gave up on lots of her own juvenile dreams to take care of their small family while Hector was obviously not whiling to gave up on his own 'juvenile dreams', he *chose to* leave to persue the music career, instead of staying home & figure things out together (music included cuz Imelda obviously had nothing against it at that point). she probably supported him bc she loved him only, she wasn't any thrilled to be left alone to work & raise a child all by herself for months/years, i just think she was barely handling things & that's why she was so mad when he simply didn't get back (being dead), she obviously thought she was *abandoned by him* & probably felt betrayed her whole life even tho she loved him, that's why she'd put all the blame on him and his music! _Imagine all the things she had rolling through her head being left blind to her own assumptions.._ and there you have it, the reason why she acted like that, forgiving is not that simple but still they get to it in the end. - Imelda and Coco are the strongest characters in this movie, indeed.💔

      @lacthocia Pƙed rokem

@@azuroslazuli6948 Get over what, exactly??đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž Her whole perspective of the story is different. It's not that she had a century to get over, it's that she had nothing she needed to get over through her perspective. lol Btw, we barely know how Imelda really was in life and her character growth after death to assume she didn't got over things, we just know she wanted zero relationship with music and Hector and passed that on in life (she might have changed a lot after death, but the ones in life were still passing her lessons on).
Not to mention the meanings behind it, Imelda was the rock of the family, she's described as strong woman, so obviously will take centuries to change her mind, we see that by the fact that even after knowing Hector was murdered she still couldn't forgive him right away. Her alegrife is also a giant feline, that is to represent how brave, determined & unbreakable she is. I personally think she did make peaces with music after death (got ""over"" it a bit), she was able to easily sing for Miguel and in front of thousands of people AND in from of Hector, she was also able to change her mind for Miguel _in one single night._ So she obviously wasn't as harsh about music as she was in life anymore to the point she allowed Miguel to follow the path that ""disgraced"" her family, trusting him.
In conclusion, i understand what you mean - but you gotta realize this is just a 'positive speech', people hardly apply in their lives without help. Imelda is a classic latina mom/grandmother in it's core hence her personality (cultural), she's traumatized and feels overly responsible for her family well-being (psychological effects of events), everything matters when it comes to ""get over"" something (facts, feelings, perspectives, values, social relations, even environment), so you can't just request them to get over without rlly understanding why that person is the way it is.

I have to say I watched this movie for the first time today and it made me feel different towards the idea of death. I’m not Mexican nor know much about Mexican culture, but this idea of death not being the worst possible thing that can happen really is mind changing. Instead, of worrying about death, they were worrying about the final death which would occur when you have been forgotten completely. It makes me think that the reason why you are not forgotten is because of the love your family has for you, and that love (expressed in diff ways) is passed on through generations and generations. That love is eternal. So what I took from this movie is that family is everything & with the best of your abilities, cherish the love of your family because that love has the power to make you live forever.

Took my family to see this opening night. I was the same way you are in the theater. Made me really connect to my mom who passed away almost 10 years ago who never got a chance to see my family in person. Loved your Hamilton reactions from before and officially subscribed.

Being Mexican American, this movie perfectly captures my culture and preparations for El Dia De Los Muertos (The Day Of The Dead). How we decorate the altars, the music, the lore behind the celebration, everything.

What I love about this movie is how easily you can relate to it
I watched this not even a month after my grandma (whom I was super close with) passed away and I bawled for the entire last 10 minutes
It's a beautiful concept, amazing scenery and superb soundtrack. It's my favourite Pixar movie for sure 💖💖
