Fix a New Gas Can in 5 Minutes - Adding a Vent

  • It isn't a secret: The new style gas cans are terrible fragile contraptions that have caused many a spills and are responsible for numerous new curse words being created to help describe them. But there is hope. This is my solution to this entirely unnecessary problem.
    If you're wondering who is responsible for all of the gasoline spills and time spent waiting you have endured at the hands of these containers, you have the Children's Gasoline Burn Prevention Act to thank for this. I seriously doubt these have prevented any such tragedies (and most likely have caused some), but that's up to your legislators to decide. Trust them. They know what's best for you.

    So far so good. I’ve filled it twice and it’s great getting 13 gallons at one shot czcams.com/users/postUgkx-vlHjazTv30m_UAq9Ht-fuPo2jBx7tTx . It pumps out by using gravity so the bottom of the tank needs to be above the vessel you're filling. Not a drop spilled filling the generator three times. Let’s see where we’re at after 20 fills.he slightly larger Panfish floats czcams.com/users/postUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU recommend they work just fine. The smaller size lets me carry more in my tackle box, and the 3 color choices are nice for different lighting conditions, backgrounds, etc. They aren't the most durable things in the world. But, as cheap as they are, it's not heartbreaking to lose one or have to replace a worn one. The price on these fluctuates wildly, from about $9 to almost $16. So, time your buy accordingly.

    I like your vent solution, might have to try that. I had to fill up a truck quickly to evacuate a fire zone this summer. We hadn't installed a vent, and the seals in the nozzle were leaking (as they had from day one). I ended up breaking the nozzle off and just pouring it in there with a funnel... and I probably slopped less gas on myself and down the fender doing that than had dribbled out of that horrible little spout. There's gotta be a better solution.

    Hi, just got onto your channel. Like it very much. One way, at least for the foreseeable future, to get good old style gas cans, is to keep your eyes open on the interstate, as you pass through suburban areas. Empty gas cans seem to have the tendency of jumping out of landscape trailers quite frequently near the burbs. Particularly the 5 gallon size. The wind just blows them out of the trailer, it seems. Also, they can be had in antique and collectible shops.

    Good job in not recommending the air valve stem method. I have tried that and it absolutely degrades in short time. I live in hot south texas and when the temperature rose enough and the valve's rubber degraded enough, the pressure within the can simply pushed the valve out. I had no idea how long it had been sitting without the valve and gasoline fumes leaking into my garage, I'm just glad I found it before anything bad happened.

    Not to mention the boat gas tanks for rafts and dinghys have *no* vents in them, to prevent "dangerous fumes" from venting into the atmosphere. Instead, it will increase to 5 psi and overpressure the bowl, forcing gasoline into it, spilling it all into the ocean. Previous vents just vented any overpressure. So now we need to either leave the cap off, venting more fumes, or destroy our engine's carburetor.

    While this method does work, it's far easier and a bit cheaper to buy a 10 pack of actual gas can vents off your favorite online seller, drill a 1/2" hole, and push one in. Voila, same vent as most cans came with 10 years ago. As a bonus, it only sticks out 3-4mm instead of hanging out to snag on stuff like a tire valve or drain petcock. :)

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Před 3 lety

      If anyone knows of a fully gasoline resistant valve stem/core/cap I do think that would be a superior solution. How do the metal stems seal to the wheel? I assume that is the same material but perhaps they make a seal type that would work? (BTW for other commenters 'gasoline resistant' means gasoline will quickly destroy it. Gasoline resistant implies if you spill gas on it and let it dry there will not be permanent harm. Immersion for long periods of time is different. It needs to be fully solvent proof.)

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Před 3 lety

      Also, metal valve stem caps have a rubber sealing surface to act as a 2nd failsafe barrier to air leaks. This would need to be solvent proof as well.

Just remove the core, replace the O-rings and you should be good. Fish the stem in through the neck with some bailing wire. I’m ordering stuff soon. A 1/4 in. NPT Tank Valve would also be an option, just remove the core and add a metal cap.

    Yeah, they actually do that for a reason. at 2:15 a little pipe can be seen inside the pouring spout. This is intended to draw the air displaced by filling the tank into the jerry can, to reduce the amount of fuel vapours being expelled that may ignite.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Před 2 lety

      It's purpose is to allow air into the can to allow it to pour. It works poorly but but it does allow the fluid to come out slowly. It has nothing to do with fuel vapors. When talking about gas pumps there they do have systems in place to prevent excess fuel vapor from escaping.

    i use a non vented one and when it bulges i just open the cap a bit to release the pressure or just keep it in a cool area well thats what i do

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Před 3 lety

      That works, but it still pours slowly and easily spills which is the primary problem that needs addressing.

    How about a simple one way valve, so that when standing by it won't let out any of the gasoline, but when you start to pour it lets in all the air you need?

    • @sivalley
      @sivalley Před 8 lety

      A valve for this purpose would have to be ridiculously large to be sensitive enough to the tiny changes in pressure, hence why it's impractical and not used. Pressure changes are in the hundredths of inches (millimeters) water column pressure.

    I've spilled more gas with the new cans than I have ever spilled with the old style. The Briggs and Stratton cans though I have found function the best from any of the new style without modifying it for added venting. The green lock collar though is garbage and it is easily cut off with side cutters.

    • @knutblaise9437
      @knutblaise9437 Před 5 lety

      @@alsatful Thanks. I thought that would be the way to go but was a bit concerned with putting water in the tank. That being said a day or so in a dry environment may evaporate all the water. Actually now that I'm thinking of evaporation it might be a good idea to use distilled vs normal water just in case the minerals/elements left behind during evaporation would not be a problem with distilled water.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Před 2 lety

      I've had some minor trouble with gasoline making its way through the brass/metal thread interface when pressurized such as when transporting in a warm vehicle causing odor and seepage. The valve itself is solid. It leaves me wondering if a simple screw on cap and external funnel system would be better.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Před 3 lety

      I expect nothing less from the cheap crap for sale in today's world. What used to be ordinary consumer grade products are now industrial grade products that cost 4x as much. Yes, you can purchase a good jerry can today for $100+ and it will work as well as the gas cans from the 1980's, but everyone just goes to WalMart and gets the $10 gas can and then bitches about it. Just like I do...

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Před 8 lety +9

      +mattmopar440 I tend to agree with you. There has actually been one company go out of business after being sued for their cans rupturing when they get hot enough, and opening one of these things up when fully pressurized is an easy way to get gasoline sprayed all over. I know of one person who went to the ER for that. The old style vents that leak slightly once the can is overpressurized worked great to keep things safe. Unfortunately they are now required to never vent under any circumstances. That's what happens you have something designed by bureaucrats instead of engineers I guess...

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes. I recently went through them and 'renewed' them by desulfating a 2nd time (I stored them improperly which is a lengthy story and some of them were damaged). Now they are functionally even better than when I made those videos of them. Life was lost, but functionality is still 70%+ of new by a quick estimate.
