  • When it comes to helping a baby gain weight after birth, it all comes down to following 4 basic feeding rules and that you take care of the main problems which could prevent your baby’s weight gain.
So, in this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy & Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, first explain the 4 most basic feeding rules that will help a baby gain weight. Next, they discuss the 5 problems which can prevent a baby from gaining weight. And they also explain strategies to deal with each problem in order to support baby’s weight gain and growth.
Finally, at the end of this video, they also show you an acupressure-based baby massage treatment which could help increase your baby’s weight. That’s because scientific studies have shown that baby massage treatments, particularly when including acupressure, can help a baby gain weight.

    Importance of the spleen:
In TCM, the spleen has a central role because it extracts energy from food that is being digested by the stomach. That energy is then sent to all the other organs so that they can maintain their normal function.
As a result, if the spleen is too weak to do that job properly, it can have an impact on the general energy household of the baby as well as the function of the organs. Such babies are often too weak to eat. They spit up a lot because their stomach is too weak to keep the food down. They have a pale complexion because of a poor blood circulation. And so forth.
The acupressure points that we show in this video are intended to strengthen the spleen as well as the stomach. If the problem is indeed related to the spleen, then these points can help the baby gain weight.

      @@tisemgtnrebbi2776 Hi there 😊,
believe us when we say: we would LOVE to!! The problem that we have though is that we cannot find someone with a baby who would be willing to produce such a video.....
Therefore, we recommend that you get in touch with a midwife or breastfeeding consultant (normally, there are also local breastfeeding support groups). Ideally, someone observes you when you feed your baby so that they can then give you feedback on how to improve the latch...
Is this an option where you live?

      Hi there 😊,
you are MOST WELCOME! We are very happy if you find our content helpful! 😊
      Regarding your question:
It's a problem that many women face. And it is not always so easy to find a solution. All you can do is trying to get rid of all possible distractions in the room (which you probably already do).
      - Dim the lights.
      - Reduce noise
      - Remove distracting objects
And one thing that has helped some women is: play some calming music OR try white noise.... It can help you calm your baby...
Other things that can help is a different breastfeeding position and making sure that you only feed your baby when he is actually hungry (although this can be difficult to determine)...
We hope any of this helps! 😊

      Hi there 😊,
thanks a lot for your feedback! We are super happy to hear that you find our video helpful!! 😊
Regarding increasing the level of amniotic fluid:
This should only be done in consultation with your doctor. If they see that the level of amniotic fluid is indeed too low, then there are several ways to increase the level:
      - saline injections through the cervix
      - L-Arginine supplements
      - and of course water

      Regarding your question:
It's a difficult question. To be honest with you, we never had a case like this!
Do you know if there is anything that prevents your baby from opening her mouth wide enough? Like, could it be a "lockjaw" or something similar?
Also, have you tried different breastfeeding positions? Maybe, another breastfeeding position could help solve the problem? Here are some ideas: czcams.com/video/sRgAB2sBmVQ/video.html
Finally, have you talked to a breastfeeding consultant already? They can give you valuable feedback after observing a feeding session. Maybe they can help you?

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před rokem

      Hi there Josephine 😊,
we normally massage babies twice a day as a morning and evening routine.
How fast you should notice a change really depends on why your baby does not gain weight / gain weight fast enough. If the problem is a gastrointestinal one, we have seen it work quite fast, often within a week or two.
Keep in mind that if there are medical conditions that cause the lack of weight gain, or if baby does not get enough milk - for whatever reason - this may not work at all.
So, it's always good to have a checkup by a pediatrician as well!

What works and what does not work depends a bit on the baby. However, one thing we have found works very well is when you express a few drops of milk and then tickle baby's mouth with that breast. While you do that, talk to your baby, maybe tickle baby a bit.
Try it! Maybe this helps! 😊

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi there 😘,
actually, we would expect a baby girl to have a bit more than 6kg right now, given that birth weight.
There are not always concerning reasons why baby is not growing as expected. Some babies just grow slower than expected.
But we would talk to a doctor, just to make sure that there are no medical reasons why baby is not gaining weight as expected.
Also, if you are breastfeeding, consider talking to a midwife or breastfeeding consultant to see, if there is anything to improve about the latch or the feeding process in general...
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi there 😊,
when looking at the average growth chart, then 4.3kg it is JUST a little bit under the weight of 4.5kg that we would hope for (given a birth weight of 2.5kg).
HOWEVER: one has to consider that preterm babies cannot eat that much initially because their stomach is much smaller than a term baby's stomach.
So, overall, weight-wise, your baby seems to be doing well! 😊
As always, if you have any concerns about baby's weight or development, please consult with a doctor!
      Thank you! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

      Hi there 😘,
unfortunately, the only way to do that is to wake your baby up.
That said, please keep in mind that the most important thing for your baby is to gain weight. If your baby gains weight even though baby is only feeding when awake, you could get away with it. It really depends on baby's condition as a preemie...

actually, when we look at a standard growth chart for baby girls (www.rcpch.ac.uk/sites/default/files/Girls_0-4_years_growth_chart.pdf) the weight of your baby girl is currently more or less exactly where we want it to be - given a birth weight of 3.2kg.
So, we don't quite understand the concerns your midwife has? Did she tell you what weight she was expecting your baby to have?

No, she didn’t mentioned the expected weight for my baby. Instead she said that the weight should be increased by 30g every day and mine is 21.45 which I’m not sure how she calculated it.

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před měsícem

      @@landofsakura5190 Okay understood!
30g a day is a bit high - in our opinion. The average growth is about 150-200g a week with boys growing a bit faster than girls (at least usually).

      Hi there 😘,
it is not normal if your baby is not gaining weight, no. However, not all reasons for that are concerning. Sometimes, there can be harmless reasons why this is happening.
However, the first thing you should do is talk with a pediatrician about it! It's important to make sure that it's not medical reasons that cause the lack of weight gain....

      Hi there 😘,
whether or not your baby is healthy, is something that we - unfortunately - cannot tell you! If you are worried about your baby's health, please do talk with a pediatrician!
We can only tell you this much: If your baby girl had between 2 and 2.5kg at birth, we would expect the weight at 4.5 months to be between 4.7kg and 5.2kg.
If your baby does not have that weight, it is not necessarily a reason to worry! However, we still recommend talking with a doctor about it...

      @@gabriellafarmer3449 I see.
Well, first of all, when looking at his growth, you have clearly been doing a fantastic job so far!
What we sometimes observe is that when you offer them both, the breast and the bottle, they start refusing the breast at some point because it is easier for them to drink from the bottle.
This does not always happen, but sometimes it does.
The other problem is that when you additionally bottle-feed the baby with formula milk and your baby starts to drink more milk from the bottle, your body believes that the demand for milk has decreased. As a result, it will produce less milk.
However, as soon as your baby is back to breastfeeding, NORMALLY, your body should continue producing more milk.
So, maybe, if you continue breastfeeding, things will go back to normal (both feeding- and milk supply-wise)?😊

      Hi there 😘,
as much as we would like to help, but unfortunately, this is not possible for us in an online setting. 😬
The first thing you need to do is check with a pediatrician if there are medical problems why your baby is not gaining any weight!
Second, if you are breastfeeding, check with a midwife or breastfeeding consultant if the latch is correct and/or if there are any other breastfeeding related issues.
If nothing works, you may wanna consider switching to bottle feeding. There is no doubt that breast milk is the best nutrition for a baby. However, right now, it is all about helping baby gain weight!

      Hi there 😊 ,
we normally expect babies to regain their birth weight 1-2 weeks after birth.
There is some research that shows that not all babies do that within 2 weeks. However, even in those cases, we would expect baby's weight to be close at least to its birth weight.
This does not seem to be the case when it comes to your baby. Therefore, we do recommend talking with a pediatrician about it (also because your baby has lost more than 10% of its birth weight - even 16 days after birth).
So, please, do not hesitate to talk with a doctor about this!

STATISTICALLY, if your previous pregnancy ended up in preterm labor, then there are also higher chances for your pregnancy to end in preterm labor this time.
HOWEVER: please note that those are only statistics! It does not mean FOR SURE that your baby will be born prematurely again this time!
Therefore, please try not to worry too much at this point! Just observe your body and watch out for the signs of preterm labor (there is a video on our channel about signs of preterm labor)...
This will help you recognize the signs IN CASE it will happen again. But otherwise, please don't worry too much!

      Hi there ❤️,
at a birth weight of 3.7kg, your baby is supposed to have approximate 5.5kg at 2 months.
Please note that feeding a newborn baby 3 times a day will not be enough for baby to increase baby's weight as baby is supposed to! A newborn baby needs to feed approximately every 2-4 hours (day and night). So you definitively have to feed your baby more often for baby to gain more weight...
      We hope this helps! ❤️
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

      @@sritamakoley5779 Ah okay sorry! 😁
Yes, the problem is that the milk only comes in sometime between day 3 and 5. So having a low milk supply at day 3 is not necessarily a reason to worry as long as the milk comes in later.
That said, even with formula milk, your baby should have about a 1kg more at this point...

      Hi there 😊,
there is a simple way to track the progress of your baby's growth yourself and also, if it is normal or not:
Look at the growth chart of your baby (there should be one in your hospital folder). Whenever you get your baby's weight, make a note on the growth chart. Based on that, you can evaluate if baby's growth is within the expected range.
Keep in mind: what you want to see is a gradual increase of your baby's weight. What you don't want to see is either a drop in baby's weight or that your baby did not gain weight...
Try it! It will give you peace of mind!
      We hope this helps! 😊

      Hi there 😘,
in that case, the first thing to do really is see a doctor! A doctor needs to confirm that there are no medical issues why your baby is actually losing weight - so please do that first!
And then if there are no medical reasons, we would talk to a breastfeeding consultant or midwife about your breastfeeding.
That said, if your baby wets so many diapers a day, then we cannot imagine that the problem is related to breastfeeding. If he would not get enough milk, he would not be able to wet so many diapers...
Therefore, please talk with a doctor first to exclude medical reasons - thank you!
      We hope this helps! 😊

      Hi there 😘,
first of all, given the weight gain during the first month, you can give yourself a pat on your back because apparently, you are doing a great job feeding your baby! 👍 😊
We totally understand that you are worried sick about what you observe right now. However, such things are often only just phases that will pass eventually. And there can be many reasons for that. For example, maybe your baby has tummy issues and is therefore not hungry.
By the way: if it IS tummy issues, you could try this treatment: czcams.com/video/osQtHkAaLaI/video.html
It balances baby's digestive system and can often help to get rid of tummy problems and eventually the feeding problem.
That said, whatever it is, the most important thing is that your baby keeps gaining weight. Therefore, please don't hesitate to talk to a doctor in case you believe that something is not right with your baby - health-wise...

have you tried to feed her in a more upright position? Here is a video which gives you some ideas that could help: czcams.com/video/sRgAB2sBmVQ/video.html
Also, it could be required to keep her upright for some time after you fed her. How long very much depends on your baby, but we would keep her upright for at least 10 minutes...
Finally, please keep in mind that the spitting will get better over time as her esophageal sphincter muscles develop.

      Hi there 😊,
please note that if your baby feeds every 2.5 to 3 hours, that's great! We had cases of babies who only ate every 5 hours - which was a problem. However, in general, a gap of 2 to 3 hours is great!
The most important thing to do is to make sure baby gains weight and that you see at least 5 wet diapers per day...
