  • When a baby is really young, their parents tend to have a bunch of fears about their little one’s well-being and health. They try to guess exactly what their baby wants and what it is that might be causing them discomfort. But how do you understand babies without using words? Luckily, some experts decoded this unique baby language. Here're some clues you’ll need to figure out what your little bundle is trying to say.

    SUMMARY:
    - Ever heard your baby cry for about 5 or 6 seconds, and then pause for the next 20 seconds? This means that your baby has been alone for a while and now desperately needs your attention.
    - This type of cry is very similar to a calling cry with one little catch - if you don't get in there right away, the crying becomes hysterical quickly.
    - If you hear a pain cry once, you'll never confuse it with any of the others. This crying is flat and constant.
    - Babies deal with all kinds of bodily functions like us, from having gas to peeing and pooping. And these can cause them more discomfort than you think!
    - Sleep is another problem for babies - sometimes they just can't! In this case their crying sounds like an offended and smooth whining, followed by loads of yawning.
    - A discomfort cry sounds very irritated and often comes together with fidgeting. Your baby can also flail their arms and legs and arch their backs.
    - This one is extremely common - your baby cries, you try doing everything you can but still can't figure out what's wrong. Easy, your baby is simply frustrated or bored!
    - “Neh” means “Hey, I'm hungry here, feed me!” This sound comes from your baby pushing their tongue up to the roof of their mouth, triggering the sucking reflex.
    - “Eh” is “I think I'm gonna burp now!” With that, the excess air starts leaving the baby's esophagus, and your baby tries to release it from their mouth.
    - “Owh” means “I'm so sleepy and tired!” Your baby just folds their lips before yawning and this sound comes out!
    - “Heh” is baby speak for “I'm not feeling it, I’m uncomfortable.” The main reason is probably an unpleasant feeling of some sort. The baby can give away their feelings by constantly moving and jerking their hands and feet as well.
    - “Eairh” indicates “I have a sore tummy, help!” This strange sound can turn into a moan, as your baby stretches the belly and exhales. Don't ignore these symptoms - take action right away.
    - If your baby arches their back during eating, it's a sign of reflux, after eating it means they're full.
    - If ear rubbing is followed by intense crying, you should definitely visit the doctor to find the source of the problem.
    - Fist or no fist shows how hungry your baby is. A perfectly relaxed hand means that they're full, while strong fist shows that they need baby food right this minute.
    - During the first months of your baby's life, colic and tummy pain are almost inevitable. Your baby tries to cope with it on their own by lifting their legs to ease those unpleasant sensations.
    - Loud sounds, bright lights, and sudden wake-ups provoke the startle reflex in little babies. As a result, they jerk their arms out of fear.

A father of 3 speaking here. DO NOT. and I mean DO NOT take this video as fact.
Every child is different. There is no instruction book on how to raise babies for this very reason.
There where things with my oldest child that would give me hints on what baby wanted, some of those didn't apply to my 2nd child, and then they didn't all work with my 3rd child. All three had different tells for different situations.
YOU as a parent will figure out what your baby is trying to tell you over time. It may be hard at first, but it does get easier.

I'm an experienced mommy and Grandma. I think you guys should actually FOR REAL let people hear the different cries. Explaining them is a whole lot different than hearing them. You guys could show the differences because you are right. It doesn't matter what gender or race the child is. You clearly can tell what's going on by the cries. I think this video would've been the best had you actually let people hear genuine baby cries. I believe you know that as well. No disrespect meant. Thnx for the video.

I have to agree! Our daughter at 8 days old was incosoleable, we followed all the cues. And it was obviously a painful cry. She was full,no gas, temp was fine....and popped her first tooth at 8 days old. Hence the crying in pain. Neo natal teeth. Crazy thing to happen that we were unaware of. We had heard of natal teeth. Then she got an ear infection 2 days later. Both extremely uncommon for an 8 day old baby. So uncommon in fact when I took her to the Dr the argued she couldn't possibly have a tooth or ear infection yet....they soon apologized. Thankfully her neo natal teeth were rooted. Some arent and have to be extracted asap. But thought I'd share. I wondered if I had missed a type of cry and this wasn't my first born lol

This is a really informative video! It's important to remember that babies communicate in many different ways, and it's up to us as caregivers to try to understand what they are trying to tell us. It's also crucial to pay attention to their nonverbal cues, as they may not always be able to express their needs through words. Great job covering all of the different ways that babies communicate and the things they are trying to tell us!

FYI; I discovered with my new born son that infants have nightmares. So, when they cry in the middle of the night, for no reason, they just might have woken up and found themself in unfamiliar territory (cold & exposed). I found that if I picked up little Bandon, and if I laid down and placed him on my chest with his head against my heart, in contact with my body heat and exposed him to my rhythmic breathing, he would be closer to the familiarities of his last nine month , where he would instantly fall back asleep (back in his known comfort zone). Keeping your infant against you bare skin with your hand on their back, with their head on your left chest, being rocked by your breathing can soooo easaly comfort them. Just saying! D.

At 6 months I started to use sign language with my twins. By the time they were 8 months old, they could ask for milk, show me they were hungry or thirsty and if they were scared. It made such a big difference in communication. I wanted to know for sure what they wanted and I wanted them to tell me so I wouldn't have to guess. They are capable of learning signs early.

Anyone expecting a baby: you can never hold your baby too much when they're so young. They need that comfort and responding to them right away when they cry tells them that they can rely on you and really helps their development too.
Remember: you can never give them too much attention, they need it.

Hello, When you finish medical school, moreover when you finish a pediatric residency you will have a different view. :-). As a physician, I will say although some babies do have distinctive cries in certain situations it is important to remember every baby is different. Parents must learn their own child. Some of these things stated are correct, but definitely not all and definitely not for all babies.Good luck on your medical journey, it’s a wonderful profession. Blessings.

I don’t know if it’s just because we had a preemie, but our daughter had almost the same cry for everything. She came home on a schedule from the NICU, so we knew when she was hungry or tired. She had reflux and gas issues a lot, so we tried our best to alleviate those for her, but the reflux honestly didn’t resolve until she started unassisted sitting. Then everything got better for her.
