  • The sportscard culture is back!
    The market is super hot right now and it’s so exciting to watch people have fun, get back to their childhood passions, and learn the game of supply/demand and buying/selling.
    This is a market that’s growing in demand but doesn’t have more supply. That’s a recipe for opportunity - it’s a big reason why I put over a million dollars into sports cards over other alternatives.
    Here are some of my favorite moments from being involved in the hobby for over the past year. Hopefully, this helps you understand why I am going so hard in this space and why I get so much enjoyment out of it... enjoy!

    I just sold my BMW, all my jewelry, electronics, silver & gold coins and even some high-end clothes and shoes I bought that are still new with tags. I'm betting it ALL on Kawhi and Lebron James Refractors in Raptors, Clippers and Lakers uniforms. A few months ago it was simply a matter of me wanting to buy a new house and a Ferrari (or maybe a Lexus LC 500). With the profits we have seen so far, we are now talking about GENERATIONAL WEALTH - BAKSETBALL CARDS MATTER!
    By the way, if you are lucky enough to find on Kawhi Optic Gold Wave Card or Lebron Mosaic Overdrive card grab it - these are going to the moon in October!!

      @@Fedgery007 Supply/Demand like any market. You lost because of the mass production. Understand the intricacies of specific markets and you won't be left holding the bag. Saw a lot of people say that about crypto, well we know how how that investment played out, bitcoin going down to 3k and then back to around 10k. Obviously don't buy it when it's in a bubble, use a sentiment indicator to try and figure that out but currently there are no signs of the sports card niche in a bubble. Cross reference google search queries and trends and it'll become pretty clear. Peace

    I love Gary V, but this recent boom in sports cards is largely due to his hype, and a lot of unknowledged people are getting into it just to make a buck. That causes hoarding, retail shortages, and eventually the manufacturers up their production to meet demand since they make nothing off the secondary market. That leads to overproduction, which is what caused sports cards to crash in the mid 90s. I've watched this rodeo before. The only difference this time is the 50 pack of rookie cards will be replaced by graded slabs.

      By that logic, if you would have stayed away since last year when he was "pumping" it then..... you would have missed most popular rookies that have went up 1000+ % since then. I find it hilarious that people think he is pumping it as a master plan to dump and make money. Do you realize how much he is worth and how many cards he would have to buy and flip to even begin to compare to what he is already worth? When he is worth close to 200 million do you honestly think he would want to tarnish his reputation for what.... few hundred thousand?lmao. I am a day/swing trader and live and breath the markets which are full of pumps, I strongly disagree that this is a pump.

    • @RichP007
      @RichP007 Před 3 lety +1

      He’s been “pumping” since Giannis was at $300 over a year ago. They’re now selling at 4K. It’s one thing to not follow the herd, it’s another to watch a waterfall in the desert and say eventually it will run dry and you’ll be right.... but still very dry.

    Kawhi Gold Wave Optic and Select are by far the best short term investments on the market now....these are going for around $1,000 or less - and the Lebrons are going for like $20K - WTF???. Kawhi is 6 years younger than Lebron, has a much higher winning percentage, his teammates actually like playing with , still has a full head of hair, and is way less prone to making stupid comments in the media on matters outside of basketball. I already scored as many of these as I could (the ones without any noticeable flaws). I love to give newbies in the Hobby helpful advice. The cards are super duper SSP and unnumbered (which is a good thing in this particular instance). There are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of the regular Optic and Select inserts. These cards are probably like #'d to 16 or less and his TRUE CLIPPERS ROOKIE CARDS in LA Uniforms.
    You are welcome ;)

    Kyle Lewis is the man in baseball now, his topps parallels are still affordable but on the rise...and his teamate Tim Lopes is also killing it and his cards are suuuper cheap.
    Kyle Lewis is good for a flip this season IMHO. Yordan and Lux are mysteriously out so far, Bo Bishette was already priced pretty high, but no one was looking at Kyle really. Now is the time to buy! (disclaimer: I own some Kyle Lewis cards)
    Gary, (or anyone really) what's your take on Zion? I'm sorry if you have said it somewhere already but I'm new to your content. I think Zion is a hold until the start of next season, then I'll sell 1/2 of mine and go from there.

    So I just got back into the card game. Used to love it as a kid. About to go through all my old stuff.
    But, in regards to newer stuff, baseball and football, who do you see being the big hitters in 6 months to a year to hold onto. I get topps chrome for baseball, and elite, prestige, and certified for NFL. I'll pick up single cards in other styles, more expensive, on ebay like gold standard where I just pocketed a newly minted clyde edwards-helaire /250 for $25.
    Thoughts on that stuff?

    Seeing really is believing in this case. I'm a big purchaser of baseball cards and have been collecting for many years now. And I have absolutely no idea what's been going on these last couple of years or so, but I'm _really_ liking it! For some reason I've witnessed _many_ of my cards rise up in value _meteorically_ in such a short time. For instance, my 2005 Bowman Chrome Justin Verlander blue refractor auto which I had originally pulled from a pack (originally worth $150 raw) has since gone up to a cool $1,000; a 2018 Topps Update Juan Soto SSP image variation which I had originally picked up on eBay for around $140 a couple of years ago is now worth $800; and a 2019 Topps Chrome Sapphire Fernando Tatis which I had originally picked for $400 (Buy It Now) had just sold recently closed out on eBay for a cool $1675 (raw ungraded). And these are just a small portion of my big winners. My only grip though is that I did not buy these cards for investment purposes, but rather just to fill a desire as personal collector only. But now I think that's going to all change _very_ shortly! :)

    Forgive me for being a beginner, but can someone explain to me why some rookie cards of the same player are worth significantly more then others? I found a Kobe rookie card worth 3,000 on eBay and another worth 10$. Why is this? How do I know what brand and type of card to buy if there is a player who’s card I think is undervalued?

    • @gggeeek
      @gggeeek Před 3 lety +1

      Rarity; the $3,000 card likely only has a small number that were ever printed. The $10 card is likely widely available. There is also the "junk wax era" of the late 80s/90s where sports cards were so massively overprinted that there are BILLIONS of cards still sitting unopened in warehouses to this day. Most of the late 80s/90s cards are worthless. In the late 90s and 2000+s print runs shrunk 1000x+ and there is far fewer copies of modern cards. In the 90s you would have "special cards" that were 1 of 50,000 copies printed; today we have 1 of 1 and 1 of 5 and even then the 1 of 1s are about the only thing that really has great value. Also autographed cards obviously have a ton of extra value. Another consideration is if the card is graded; a graded card (since grading is expensive to get done) will naturally be worth more. The higher the grade the higher the value. Ungraded cards for high value cards are a risky proposition FYI; often you are much better off buying graded cards for the high end stuff.

    As far as graded cards, does it matter much whether its PSA or BGS?

    • @poooky321
      @poooky321 Před 3 lety

      PSA will fetch significantly more in basketball. Not sure about other sports. Not sure why either as I really like Becketts case better, the sub grades, and they're a little cheaper to grade per card than PSA.

      They will always gradually go up in price , because some players take time to develop and when they do the cards will go up making the box rise , buy a box right now in 20 years it will be nearly 10x that

    I have been collecting for roughly 40 years. In my humble opinion vintage cards are the one genre that will always hold value. I am by no means a flipper and I truly follow the sport of baseball. It is good to see the hobby making a comeback, but be leery of the bubble we are in. Although I feel it will not be to the magnitude of the 90's, I believe the bubble will burst as it did during the junk wax era. Now is the time to sell for sure, and even though the card company reps say they will not repeat the mistakes of yesteryear at the end of the day it is a business. Supply and demand will obviously have an effect on the amount of cards that are printed (it already is). I hate to see folks hoarding retail boxes and then selling them for double the cost, and I truly feel bad for folks just getting back in to the hobby who by the blasters at unfair prices. I guess it really comes down to if you want to risk investing or collecting, and if you do invest follow the sport, I mean follow it closely. I remember buying Arozarena autos (Panini) well before he was traded to the Rays, and I did so based on his minor league performance. In turn I was able to sell and buy cards I truly love to collect, and that is the beauty of this hobby.
