If she worked in the Plain Store, she would've been required to wear the clothing of that community while at work, which explains why she would have that wardrobe. It sounds like she built a fantasy life around being in the Plain Community and decided to live it out over TikTok. It makes me wonder what's going on in her real life that would make her go to that extreme.

But on the other hand.. she clapped back wayyyy too hard at that girl who tried to expose her, especially for someone who (probably) IS the one who is lying. Going as far as to claim that she has seen this girl since joining the community and explained it all to her.. she should've just said "she must not be aware I joined the community" or something. Or just took the L and stopped all of this. But posting that video being so confident in her defense.. ofc there will be people who take it too far trying to dig to find out who is telling the truth.

dont give addresses/locations, names and photos of the family and community.. there's a weird sect of the online community who everyone is well aware, will use that information to bombard those innocent family members, for no real good reason, not out of concern, but to be nosey shit heads who think they are important and think they know whats the best for this woman, who again, seems well capable of leaving if she wanted to, or asking for help to. while i wouldn't be Armish myself, if this is what she wants, let her have it and dont make it harder then shes already made it for herself.
for fans who claim they have respect for her, they sure are acting the most disrespectful towards her then anyone else really in this situation.

The sad part is that these communities are brimming with women who would love to share their stories and the actual abuse they've suffered, but they actually will face the shunning and get kicked out of the community. If she was working as an employee in one of theses stores, she could gave juat came on and shared the actual stories from actual community members and possibly helped someone out of the cult. (Btw, shunning is a practice that is only used by cults. That alone (despite being far from the only cult like practices in these communities) makes any religion a cult. Don't let the cute farms and jelly jars make you forget that most of the Amish communities are cults. I grew up in from a fundamentalist Christian cult, I know them when I see them. Shunning is a tactic with the only intention being to force those who no longer agree 100% to stay quite and pretending along. Shunning is abuse, shunning is a form of torture. Its solitary confinement without the confinement. Please DON'T support any community that uses this practice. If you get a little defensive at someone blatantly calling the Amish a cult and not wanting to support them, maybe take a second to watch some ex-amish stories. The issue I take is that plain people, without easy access to information and communication outside their community, don’t have much say over how they’re depicted outside the community (which is why you shouldn’t take a plain person’s picture/video without their permission IMO - they’re not a tourist attraction). Worse, people in those plain communities who might want to leave, may have limited opportunities to do so, and may not be free to openly discuss why they wanted to leave once they’re out. I think plain people, and those who have left plain communities, should be allowed to speak for themselves. And if Sarah Joy was lying about her involvement - which unfortunately does seem likely - then she was talking over plain people. I don’t think she meant any harm or malice, but regardless, damage is possible and we can’t really know the extent.

That first part is also why I’ve never been comfortable with Amish-themed romances (often written for a mainline Protestant audience) - I doubt many of those are actually written by Amish folks, or that any Amish folks were really consulted in their creation. I am a Mennonite that grew up in an Amish area. She is neither. She's mixing up things from both communities - Amish and Old Order Mennonite. There's a reason why she won't tell you which she is, because she just isn't. And while there are bad things that happen in these communities, bad things happen in all religious communities and all communities in general. I have known many Amish, Old Order Mennonite and more progressive Mennonites, and they were happy in their communities. Some had left and weren't persecuted, they just weren't allowed to be involved in the community anymore. Also, many Mennonites, even Old Order Mennonites, do attend college. I went to college with them and my college chemistry professor was one. He couldn't drive a car so he bicycled to class.

I appreciate how much benefit of the doubt you are allowing but if I have to be blunt, I think this girl likes to act, wanted views and fame, and created this narrative out of thin air, ignoring the fact that many of her actions would offend the beliefs and lifestyle of the Amish/ mennonite communities. Even looking at her "holocaust era reenactments," I remember when that was trending and found the whole thing so strange. There are better ways to tell traumatic histories than reenacting them in your bedroom, almost mocking the horrors that real people went through. People did it for clicks and views. I don't think people should be hating on this girl, threatening her etc. But I don't think any of this was innocent on her part, and it is good that content creators should lose support when they are caught lying, impersonating other cultures/peoples, making light of history, etc. In this case I think her videos are just cringey when you learn the context, but in others instances, content creators can definitely cross the line

Two things - Spanish Forks area is an area of concern - there's mainstream LDS and the fringe fundamentalists. Mainstream usually don't cut off non believer family, they're encouraged to show you how great they think it is. The fundamentalists scare me a bit, I would def try to reach out even if no response. You might want to look into Ammon Bundy & his group. But mainstream LDS may have resources if theyve gone fringe. There's also folks with beliefs like Lori Allow & Ruby Franke around, but LDS powers will be working very hard to bring those who aren't yet excommunicated into the fold. It's very clear that there's something going on, and we're all lucky the Franke kids got out in time. Btw, Plain folks & LDS can seem kinda similar, esp FLDS who look like Plain if you aren't familiar with Anabaptist (Plain) rules. But theologically, the reasons they live like this are very different. LDS can be almost liberal, I work with some folks you'd be shocked are Mormons, I don't agree with the theology or rules, but they are pretty normal most of the time. I worry your daughter is married into zealots, but again there are online resources that may help. Best of luck, much ❤❤❤❤ to you! I know you'll be reunited happily with her soon ❤❤

Hi. I’m from the same area Sarah Joy is. I have not met her in person though I’m honestly shocked we haven’t physically crossed paths due to so many photos showing she frequents the same places I tend to go. Her family isn’t Mennonite, or Amish. Now whether she, and only she, is a convert, I don’t know. What is true is that our area does have a big Mennonite community especially in the next county, and some Amish people as well. The store she works at is run by Mennonite people. Whether they require employees to dress modestly I don’t know, but the church her family belongs to is just your run of the mill conservative Pentecostal. They all have active social medias (minus Sarah now) and are active in the local community. They wear makeup and jeans and all that.
All in all, she entirely has the means to get the clothes, and like me is also exposed to a lot of Mennonite people. Whether she intended for this to all blow up I don’t know, but her actions have caused a mess. The church took their page down, our sheriff’s office was bombarded with people wanting to do wellness checks on her, all while they were focusing their effort on aiding other counties in wildfire efforts and finding kids who had went missing (who are now found and are okay). We’re a small area, with limited resources. Please, if you are worried about someone on social media, think before you act.

So what's sad is if she'd done this and just admitted she works at a plain store and is going to share stories from women she's talked to. Because working with them does indeed give you a closer relationship to them than the average person will have. She could have given demos for how they do things, given us stories about 'she said she thinks this when she sees girls in big sweaters or tattoos'. It would have been all the info she wanted to give, but without the lying.

There's a lot of domestic violence in the Amish and Mennonite communities. It's reasonable that people would be afraid for her because women in these communities would not be allowed to be on tick-tock.
Even if she wasn't the one making go-fund-me-s, it's still her fault if people got scammed
Kids need to understand that you can't be doing this stuff. If you want to make up a story and act it out then by all means do. But label ot as fiction. It is reckless to pretend things are real and allow other people to think it's actually real

This. There are so many people these days cutting off toxic family members or enablers of toxic people. I'm not close with or even in contact with most of my family. They could potentially claim anything about me, show pictures of us together from years ago and yet it wouldn't be proof for anything other than us having a genetic or familiar link. They don't know anything about me. Never really did in the first place and now definitely don't know anything about me either...

Nah amish and Mennonites are really strict and would not tolerate Sarah just kind of following the rules. Her wearing makeup would be considered sinful. Also if she was amish recording videos of her face is literally considered breaking one of the 10 commandments. There is genuinely no way she was amish and posting tik tok videos for an extended period of time. They would have kicked her out of the community long before that

you will literally never catch an amish person wearing anything other than the garments approved of by their church, a specific head covering with all hair up, maybe some sketchers or flip flops from a major brand but not much variance otherwise. mennonites have much more freedom in choice of fabric, cut, where they purchase, a bit more flexible in their modesty and garment choice. also the hair is a lot more visible usually just a small lace clipped into the back of their hair where the bun might sit

If she is anything at all she is Mennonite no shot she is Amish, at least based on her dress and they had electricity in their home. I believe they had a microwave in the background of her videos. I’m asssuming she is living with mennonites based on her trying to be accepted into the community I assume to maintain housing but I don’t know that for sure. The Amish don’t even like their members to live in a house that is wired for electricity even if it’s not hooked up because of the “temptation to use it” let alone own allow something so “worldly” as a microwave in their homes. Amish are far more strict than the Mennonites about what they wear even though they may look similar to those unfamiliar. Mennonites can even drive and own cars while the Amish can’t even have modern lights or reflectors on their horse drawn buggies in many communities (which is against the law in many counties and has led to significant loss of life on city streets mostly for the Amish community as majority of casualties are children as they aren’t held to road safety laws like seat belts or child seats, not that it would help that much in a wooden buggy but ya know).
It’s night and day different in many ways. They both still believe in living separate from mainstream society. Very Different take on “be in the world but not of the world” bible verse from most other Christian communities.
The Amish as especially controversial IMO as “for religious reasons” they aren’t required to educate past 8th grade and many don’t pass all grades as they are allowed to homeschool with almost no checks and balances. Which is probably way so many people stay Amish. Makes it impossible for kids to get out when they grow up cause they can’t find employment especially for women (men often have carpentry skills). Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. Edited to clarify I was more explaining the major difference between these two communities than what ever the heck is going on with this girl.
