    So I’m Pennsylvania Dutch. Next rung down from Mennonite. She calls her community “plain” community. That reference is only used by the older Amish n Wisconsin. I’ve never heard an Amish refer to themselves as that. Just as try refer to us as “English”.
    From what I can tell, she’s Mennonite if they have electric. Many Amish and Mennonite go down to Florida where they have a little community where it’s more relaxed. If she is Amish and someone found out she’s on social media and discussing how they live, she can very much be disowned. Being near Lancaster, we see a lot of Amish and some who choose to leave the life, will continue to dress “plainly” which is rooted in their faith. So just bc you may leave the community, you may still dress accordingly. I haven’t seen her content to truly know whether it’s real or not. She just reminds me of those who work at the museum that do recreations of Amish life.

    I live in Mennonite country and “mennonites” encompasses a large range of beliefs and practices based off them. Old Order are horse and buggy, no electricity, one room school house, plain clothes, etc but then there’s others that blend entirely into modern day and it’s just the church they belong to, like I have friends, colleagues and professors that are Mennonite and you wouldn’t know if they didn’t tell you. There’s also ones that fall kind of in the middle, where they dress plainly but they’re allowed to drive dark coloured vehicles for example. I also know lots that kind of bend the rules, ie they have a phone box on their property line to get around not being allowed phones, or people charge batteries for them so they can have “electric” lights in their store. I don’t want to draw any conclusions but I think there’s a misconception that Mennonite are a very specific set of rules and beliefs but really there’s a whole spectrum from old order to new order, and they could potentially fall somewhere in between.
    Also, does anyone else remember the show Breaking Amish🤔 (could potentially be a lot of parallels there)

  • @catie5939
    @catie5939 Před měsícem +12

    I grew up evangelical Quaker in a place where we had somewhat strong ties to more "liberal" mennonite groups. For instance, we had a Mennonite interim pastor for a time, and I attended a mennonite home church for a bit.
    Imo, it's complicated. She sounds like she's picked up a bit of that Pennsylvania Dutch/Mennonite accent, or I guess she could be putting it on, but I know I always pick up the idiosyncrasies of those I'm around a lot. She absolutely could have converted, although it takes varying amounts of time depending on the group you're in.
    Sometimes, more Conservative Mennonites will low-key refer to themselves as Amish. There isn't always a super clear distinction between the two groups, especially with more liberal Amish folk. And there ARE more liberal Amish groups, although none that I know of would necessarily allow a smart phone. 🤔
    Also, sewing your own dresses is not that hard. Cape dresses come together fairly simply and are frequently actually sewn in two parts and pinned together on the body. Also, they're readily available all over Etsy and eBay, and there are even other stores that will make them to order.
    There's also a lot of people, in my experience, who sort of hover around the periphery of the plain community, wanting to join but not able to get on board with every tiny piece of doctrine, or they don't want to relinquish control of their families. So, her family could have been one of those, causing her to feel like she was raised plain even if she wasn't.
    There's just a LOT of dysfunction in these communities, especially the Amish who have kept themselves closed off from "The World" for so long. I'm talking ab*se and s*xual ab*se of women, children, and animals. Just awful, horrific stuff. Amish dental care is also absolutely torture in a lot of places. So, these communities are just rife with weird behavior. They provide a cover for a ton of abuse, because your supposed to call the church authority before you call the cops. And while I dislike the cops, church authority isn't usually that much better.
    Also, in groups like these there's often a hierarchy loosely based on who was born into the community and who wasn't. In my Quaker group, we had "Birthright Friend" and "Convinced Friend".
    So, she could very well be sort of cosplaying being the Amish/Mennonite equivalent of a birthright Friend. And I mean, the culture is hard to fully grasp if you didn't grow up in it, so she may just want to just feel like she grew up in it and pretend to the English that she did, thus motivating her to lie.
    Regardless, I think she either grew up adjacent to the community or wants to feel a more a part of it in any way she can. Folks like this are often just desperate for community and the Amish prey on that just like any other cult.
    From the outside, we often see the plain lifestyle as pastoral or bucolic, but once you're in too deep it's really hard to get out and it's not a peaceful or happy lifestyle. It's awful and exhausting.
    I hope she's able to get out eventually, because this whole situation just sounds dysfunctional af. 🤦

    My parents had Amish friends and we would travel every summer to go see them in Pennsylvania & Imo why even do this if you know what the consequences are 🤔 I say that bc my parents friends wouldn’t even let ya take a picture of them bc they said it was evil & they portrayed it as “devil taking a piece of your soul” …. I remember certain things about my summers there so that’s why I say if Sarah Joy knew what the repercussions could be yet still chose to go online & share & do vids then if she’s excommunicated & shunned by the church which is a very real part of their life & religion then is it anyone’s fault but her own if she does get shunned by bishop? I don’t mean that rudely or mean at all just knowing “that life” it’s very upfront about modern things & society. I ❤ social media & think everyone should do whatever they want as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone ❤ but with that being said if you know Amish even Mennonite people then ya know they’re strict strict when it comes to way they live & it’s known what will happen if ya disregard their practices. So I don’t agree with doxxing people or bullying anyone ever & think ya should treat everyone with respect & kindness But Sarah Joy was no stranger if she’s Amish as to what would happen if the church & community learned she’s on TikTok 🤷🏼‍♀️ but she chose to anyway so is it truly anyone else’s fault that she may have to face repercussions & take accountability for her actions 🤔bc she seemed to attempt to shift blame if her bishop did shun her to it being others fault it’s happening 🤷🏼‍♀️ I know Amish also have a period where they can choose to leave at like 18, & they’re allowed to go out & ignore rules for a period of time & then decide if they want to stay or want to leave the community. My parents friends had 6 kids 4 left, 2 stayed. I say all this because if Sarah Joy joined this community then she was FULLY aware how serious they feel about modem society, modern amenities lk cell phones, social media & even the act of recording video/taking pics etc & their beliefs & reasons for their practices bc they will gladly share it😂 One memory though that was pretty neat was watching their community come together to raise a barn it was fascinating to me & I remember always thinking how incredibly disciplined the kids were to not want nor even try the things others their age due to their beliefs. The 1 girl I was close with job was the buggy driver on horse carriage rides around community & I remember 1 of our last visits I was talking about college etc with her & remember her looking at me both excited, scared & bit intrigued asking me questions about the university I toured etc & then her attitude suddenly shifting when she started speaking about how she’d never know any of that bc it’s not allowed 😢 I told her ya don’t have to stay ya know & she said “oh but I do it would crush my parents” & I’ll never forget the look on her face😢 With all that said 😂 My point is if she really is Amish & willingly joined the community & done all that was required to do so then she was certainly aware of what repercussions would be if she didn’t follow or abide by them so for her to kinda seem like she’s shifting blame to “viewers” as reason for her bishop finding out when in reality she knows that community may not have technology but that doesn’t mean the gossip & rumor mill isn’t going full speed all the time 😂 she knew when she garnered a large audience it was matter of time before Bishop knew😂
