I went from having a bad gluten intolerance to a full allergy... it might just be wheat, but to be safe I go mostly gluten free but I'm fine when eating barley. So since flour is made with wheat, that is definitely Something I would worry about. Thankfully I'm no longer living in the US, but I don't want to go to the emergency room from a bad asthma attack or an allergy that turned into anaphylaxis....

It's either she knows someone and is giving her the donuts, or she is buying them. As someone who works currently in dunkin, I am screaming at all of this. This is just so messy in all sorts of ways and not in a good way. It doesn't matter if she knows someone, bought them, or even works in dunkin' as a baker. Using their stuff and trying to make it off as your gluten free things is not ok at all. Like why would that be anyone's first thought is my question?

This wasn't just a person buying donuts, they're a supplier that provides vegan donuts to smaller vegan shops around the area to then sell.
So the shop was upcharging Dunkin Donuts to provide to vegan retailers who would then sell the donuts to vegan customers. That's why the guy was so concerned and specifically mentioned donuts in the plural, it's extremely shady and without knowing who they supply to there's a LOT of people that could be affected.

Baker, here! I actually attended pastry school.
They probably were trying to cover their bases by proving that they were testing her donut, but I also 100% was able to tell it contained gluten from their cuts alone.
It comes down to a variety of factors but some of the most important are the crumb (referring to the look of the bread once cut, not the actual crumbs) as well as the actual crumbs themselves. Gluten acts as a binding agent or a glue, literally holding the structure of the bread together. The majority of gluten free breads and desserts are generally quite fragile when compared to their gluten counterparts.

Honestly even if someone IS faking an allergy just because they don't like a certain food feeding it to them can still make them very sick. If you go for a long time without eating something your body gets bad at digesting it and will have a negative reaction to it if you eat it. I don't like pork so I don't eat it, but I've had friends and family members accidently give me food that had pork in it(usually because of cross contamination) just because they didn't think about it. It made me super sick every time because my body just doesn't know what to do with it anymore

I had it done to me years ago (18/19 years) at a chain restaurant. I asked for their vegan burger for take away for lunch got back ate through half of it and thought hmm something isn’t right here, my mouth and lips started stinging and itching and I had a rash all over my mouth and chin area. I opened the top of the burger and nothing… pulled it all apart and right underneath there was mayo on the bottom bun but only directly in the middle of the burger not enough to squish out when bitten into.
I rang them back and the person on the phone was being cocky and extra loud…VEGAN BURGER…MAYO I heard cackling and laughing in the background til I said it’s nothing to do with me being vegan that I asked for no mayo, I’m allergic to eggs and have super bad asthma and this could make me really ill. They said ALLERGY and it went silent in the background and the cockiness disappeared, they started to get get panicky with all the apologies and offering free food, I was like nah I want to talk to someone higher about this, they were trying everything they could not to put me on to a manager.
It’s not just about allergies or being a “healthnut” people don’t respect peoples ethics and morals and think that being vegan is stupid so like to get one over on us or teach us a lesson, har har, very funny. Ridiculous behaviour. 😡

that's rough. people need to realise that what humans see as tiny is actually IMMENSE: avagadro's constant is 6.02*10^23 - that's how many atoms of hydrogen are in 1 gram of hydrogen, or in 12 grams of carbon-12, etc. (also known as a "mole"), so for example, even one gram of milk at 2% lactose (12 carbon atoms, 22 hydrogen atoms, and 11 oxygen atoms, totalling 176AU per molecule) will contain 1gram * 2% * avagadro's constant / 176 = 68,431,818,181,818,181,818 molecules of lactose (or just over 68.4 QUINTILLION) PER EVERY GRAM OF MILK - for reference the human body is about 17-35 trillion cells, so just one gram can be enough for up to 2 TO 3.5 MILLION MOLECULES PER CELL
"the tiniest bit" my ARSE. obviously it'd be a different number for gluten (I can't find a chemical formula because it's a protein but it makes up roughly 80% of bread's weight), but we're still talking the range of 10s of quadrillions to potentially 10s of quintillions per gram depending how complex the protein strand is - still enough to outnumber your white blood cells thousands of times over
edit: forgot to carry a 10 in the molecules per cell. fixed now

The thing is, you don't know if anyone has died from this. Unless there is suspicion of foul play or very weird circumstances, they usually do not get an autopsy.. Meaning that there could be someone living on their own, buying one of these doughnuts and dying alone at home like a lot of older people.. If they are young and its weird that they have died they might get opened up to see what the hell happened, but if they are older there is a likeliness of a heart attack and no suspicion is raised.. So there could absolutely be deaths already from this, the owner needs to be imprisoned and should never be able to open any business ever again.

Hi I’m a culinary student and it’s VERY clear that this has gluten in it. ( My mother has celiac as well so I am used to seeing gluten free foods). As some one who has baked gluten free for friends and family. Gluten free flour wouldn't have the same sort of airation of dough as gluten. Of course you can usually tell by texture as they usually have very different textures. Gluten free flour tends to be more grainy then wheat, and anyone who works with it or eats it understands that graininess. The best way to disguise it is with a product thats already grainy like a sugar cookie or snickerdoodle. But usually people who eat it long term are used to the the texture change in baked goods. But of course it totally depends on what you are baking and what gluten free flour you use since there are a few on the market now a days.

Ammy Robinson covered this and I had commented something on her video as well - I used to run a cottage home baking business for a bit (because of the nature of the products I made and the amount of sales, I didn't need to require licensing) and knew that there were very big requirements for catering to gluten free and allergy issues - to the point where often you need to use separate baking utensils and things to prevent cross contamination. It would be one thing to white label products but do so with accurate labeling, but that's not what was done. I myself don't have food allergies, but due to being immunocompromised, I have to be careful about food safety and also have to avoid certain foods due to their interactions with my medications. This is a very big issue that could have caused many people health issues and isn't just a "sticking it to vegans" thing and we shouldn't accept this kind of bad behavior.

A lot of people sho choose to eat vegan at restaurants and stuff do so because of allergies, it's just easier than asking about every ingredient. So this is truly horrible.

Yeah, i work at a vegan restaurant/market and we get a lot of non-vegans with special dietary needs like dairy or egg allergies, or even just to buy specialty stuff like sugar alternatives that just aren't sold elsewhere.

I have coworkers with egg allergies and lactose intolerance, so when we all bring snacks for the break room, I learned how to bake vegan goodies. I even did my research and converted my brownie recipe to vegan. I double checked that no one had gluten issues, too. At least it’s not life-threatening-in that case I’d have brought something from a vegan bakery to avoid any cross-contamination.

As someone with a rare food allergy, I have to read all the labels of the food I eat. I have to ask when I go out to ensure what is in the food. For this lady to do this is madding! I hope she is stopped ASAP!

That donut has gluten. You can tell by the inside bubbles that gluten flour was used and how the donut crumbles very easily and consistently. Gluten free donuts have a very different consistency because the binding process of ingredients is very different. Gluten free donuts are generally more moist and don't have that consistent bubble blend.

    What did she do
Go dumpster diving for the donuts? Or paid for their day Olds?
That's absolutely disgusting. I pray she is dealt with accordingly

I am one of those unfortunate with a gluten allergy. If I have gluten it can mimic a burst appendix and I get rushed to ER just to figure out its an allergic reaction.
So I'm very glad that the company is taking it as seriously as they are

I have a friend who is allergic to chicken eggs, so she often gets for vegan options for pre-made foods as that is the only sure way to make to make sure premade foods don’t contain eggs. Even mayonnaise has some egg in it, so anything can be risky.

Mayo has a whole lot of egg in it. It’s egg and oil, that’s its only two ingredients >.>

This is a serious business screw up. She could face serious lawsuits. As my family has a few member with food intolerance and allergies, one even needing to carry an epi pen. The consequences are high for a business to pass off products that claim to not have ingredients that clearly do. In the UK the foods need to be clearly labeled with all ingredients due to Natasha's law.

When I worked at pizza hut, I was told that we couldn't cut the gluten free pizzas anymore because some workers got careless and used pizza cutters cross-contaminated with non-gluten free dough, and because of that it ended in someones death.

As someone with severe food allergies, Covid was horrible. Places that I have gone for a decade that have safe, allergen free options suddenly changed their tune during the pandemic times and not only no longer offer safe options but also don’t seem to care an ounce about those of us that need accommodation. I wish I could say this surprises me, but the reality is that most of the people running these places don’t care anymore and wouldn’t care if I dropped dead in their parking lot from “safe” food they’ve just provided.

I have multiple training in allergy awareness and years of experience in hospitality as a chef barista and what not. I am also terrified of contaminating my food and drinks and etc with allergens or cross contamination. I am terrified of doing it ACCIDENTALLY let alone INTERNATIONALLY just wow
