Hey Chaps! Which would you go for XPS or MBP?? đ Quick Update: uninstalling the realtek audio drivers then downloading latest ones from Dell's website has fixed my audio issue.
If I could afford either.....the XPS 17 seems to be such an attractive option! đ
Never Apple, terrible company.
Neither, I can't afford them đđđ

Hi Tom, I left a comment on your previous video about the quiet sound issue, now this video sounds obviously louder, at least in my devices. That helps a lot. Thank you!

Dell really has big problem of quality control, and that's not acceptable considering the price you pay. Looking good is not enough, you need to deliver too. I like the XPS line, but I really worry to get a bad unit...
Many also complaint about the touchpad creaking
Why not just do a return? I've seen reviewers say they'd be returning their Apple products also. The butterfly keyboard etc.
My XPS 15 does not have the trackpad issue
The trackpad issues are really disappointing given the price that you have to pay
Cool, loved the comparison.
Do you know, if they plan to update the XPS 2 in 1 - that is my area of interest right now, as a mature aged student.
I'd like to see a three way comparison between these two and the xps 15 with more real world benchmarks

Actually buying the retail versions of both machines out of your own money was such a sign of commitment on your part, that you really earned the subscription and the like that I've now given you! Keep up the great work!
Yes, to a Dell 15 v 17, as I'm still trying to make up my mind.
Go for 17, the vapor chamber is irresistible.
@@DiaperTai Also a better GPU
YES PLEASE
Wish the XPS 15 had that 2060 and vapour chamber.
@@DiaperTai Seems like the logical thing to do, the only thing going about the XPS 15 is how compact it is .
Great video again. Thanks. I thought the XPS screen looked far more detailed, better contrast and dealt with highlights so much better. But that defective speaker is a worry for the price.
Congrats for being the first to upload a 2020 Dell XPS 17 video in my feed.
One of my new favorite tech reviewers on YT! Glad I discovered you good sir. Keep up the great work. Cheers!
We really gotta appreciate this manâs dedication to his channel, youâve grown quite a lot in CZcams. Great comparison!
Great review! Something that I'd love to see with performance benchmarks is to run the benchmarks on both AC power and battery power. Another CZcamsr did that last year and the results were really interesting. For those that don't directly need a desktop replacement, but do use their laptops on the go, that can be a bigger factor than you'd think from the outset
Awesome video as usual. I love how you run lots of benchmarks but then break them down into simple data that we can easily understand. If you do do a XPS 15 vs 17 video, could you talk a little about fan noise and temperatures from the laptops when you put them through sustained loads? Like gaming or rendering. Whether they throttle?
This is exactly what I've been searching for! thank you so much)
Great comparison as always Tom! Also would love to see the comparison between the 15 inch and the 17 inch Dell models!
I ordered the XPS17 10min before your video went online. I was struggling between 15 and 17 as may are doing. I finally decided to go for the 17 with vapor chamber cooling and 6 Core 1650TI. My plan is that this combo is not only a little cheaper but also efficient. Less power which hopefully can be cooled reliable.
there's an Aussie guy on another channel that insists on comparing the MBP16 with the XPS15, glad you've done the comparison here.

It makes zero sense when thereâs literally a 15 inch MacBook. Heâs literally just trying to screw the results. Not to mention the 17 is about the same price as the 16 and the 15 is much cheaper. So dumb.
This was the review I was waiting for! Thanks for the help.
I got the MBP 16 and I absolutely love it. It's my first Apple product (not counting an iPod nano). I'm a grad student and my research requires lots of coding, so having 8 cores 16 threads for parallel jobs, a unix OS, and fantastic gestures for multitasking make it perfect. There were times when a class assignment took >10 minutes on my friends computers, but took me a minute once parallelized. I've previously had to dual boot windows and linux mint, or get ubuntu on windows which has it's own problems, but with mac OS, I don't need linux. The speakers and microphone are outstanding and I've never had such large battery life on a laptop. The graphics can easily handle 3D modeling software like Fusion 360 and you can tell Apple notices what their customers are doing cause you can natively view 3D .stl models in finder. The screen color temperature auto adjusts to your room so well that you'll not want to go back to your windows displays (which are either slightly blue, or really yellow in night mode). I set up bootcamp, and sadly a few features of the touchbar don't seem to work there, but it's otherwise perfectly fine. I was able to run COD WW2 with medium settings at the max 60 fps, although COD can't be a great experience at 60 fps IMO. The keyboard is very quick and responsive. The laptop does run quite hot when doing any intensive task, and of course I would have preferred having internal access to the ram and storage like you do with many Windows laptops, but that wasn't gonna happen with Apple.
I will say that if you're not planning on making use of the multitasking or coding-friendly features of Mac OS, or if you plan on actually gaming with it, you should probably save money and get a Windows machine with NVIDIA graphics.
Thank you... I had just got the Dell XPS17 and watching you're video made me even happier with my decision. It's because I'm more of an Adobe Premiere user and also more familiar and comfortable with using PCs over MACs although I was just on the verge of switching to Mac due to they're Macbooks Pros and even the M1 chip and the fact that the M1X will be dropping soon as well. However, I still have to wait on that while I currently have projects I need to work on now. Not to mention it would take even more time once getting the M1X because it'll be a huge learning curve as well. I feel like I made the right decision now. Thanks for your post. đ

how about handling the video conference programs by these two laptops (Skype, zoom, teams)? or maybe review of laptops for that? Hi Melissa đđŒ
Can I take u to dinner
How do you like the keyboard in the XPS 17 vs the MacBook? Thanks.
I'm actually debating getting an xps17 to supplement my 2019 16" mac. Given how rarely software drivers are optimized in Bootcamp (I use both windows, linux and mac os regularly) and given the upgradability of the Dell, plus the uncertainty of how much Apple will be supporting the intel macs (driver wise and such) after this fall, I'm thinking the Dell is the better choice for me
Of these two, I would go with the Dell XPS 17. I owned a Dell XPS in the past and was happy with it. If I had to purchase a laptop today, I would look for one with an AMD processor. I am impressed with their new CPU's!

How good would the $1899 XPS be for video editing? I'm mainly looking to be able to edit videos at 1080p @60fps?
I had the same sound issue after a clean install of Windows. Installing the Realtek drivers from the Dell site fixed it for me.
Did you find any battery drain under heavy load when plugged in to AC? There's lots of us reporting seeing this when gaming and even using Premiere Pro (see r/Dell on Reddit). Their USB-C charger just doesn't seem to be able to provide enough power for the 8 core i7 and 2060 under load.
For the sound issue
Go into device manager
Open sound controllers
Open Realtek Audio properties
Check for updates or even choose drivers on your computer by selecting "Browse my computer for driver software" and clicking on "Let me pick from a list..."
There's nothing wrong with the hardware of your speakers, just a software issue
That fixed it for me :)
Oh me try that
@@Thetechchap u fixed that ?
@@MayTheSchwartzBeWithYou watch short circuit(LTT's channel), the speakers are compared alongside the 16 inch MacBook Pro.
The most underrated part of any MacBook IMO is that they run as well off battery power as they do when they're plugged in. That's very important, especially for someone on the go. I learned the hard way when I bought a surface pro 4 several years ago that even that thin and light device with no dedicated graphics ran poorly off battery power and just fine when plugged in.
If you don't care about the battery and need it then yes.

Great review! I'm going round and round as to which. I love the larger 17" screen of the XPS 17, but that low battery life of the UHD+4k screen is concerning, so I am considering the FHD+ matte screen for what apparently is much better battery life. My question for you, or anyone reading this who might know, will the picture quality of the FHD+ screen be significantly worse, will it still be a good quality, high end picture? I am also wondering, if you know, how much worse in either might the battery life be if while I am mobile using the battery I am streaming online stock quotes/lists/charts, and running a couple of trading platforms downloaded to my desktop, plus multiple windows are open and multiple tabs being used on Chrome the entire time? I do not do any gaming or vidoe/audio editing/creating, so my use never gets that high, though I am online long hours every day. If the picture quality is noticeably poor on the XPS with the FHD+ matte display, the maybe it's not worth it without the 4k touch screen, but then maybe I should consider the Macbook Pro 17. round and round But I'd welcome your answers/thoughts. Thanks.

Keep coming back to watch. A question: Other things being equal, do you think the Dell XPS 17 9710 with the 4k touch display would get much better battery life with the 11th gen i7 chip versus the 10th gen i7 chip in your video review? If so, roughly how much, how many hours more, do you think? No guarantees, of course, just your best assessment. Thanks. I'm deciding b/t the FHD+ and UHD+, and am weighing various factors affecting battery life other than the screen itself. I'm also getting 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and the 3050 graphics (I don't do gaming or video editing). Thanks. Mobile is not my priority, but it is relevant.
The reason I'd prefer MB is the MacOs, but apart of OS the Dell-book seems tasty.
Typical Dell Quality control right there!
Mystic yeah it is kinda sad
I think Razer Blade Pro is better
At least it has decent disipation. That's why the mbp falls down on tests and exporting tasks. Feels very snappy doing regular things ("macbook" things). But when you go for the "pro" things... that "quality" design is not there. Just looking cool (and the 16 model is the only non-insulting laptop cooling on the entire Apple line). For >3000 pounds. WTF! đ€Ș
I have an XPS 15 9750 and it's a nice laptop but so many little things frustrate me about it. Mainly the wifi card included. The Killer Wifi cards (which I heard they're still using in these new models) are terrible and randomly drop connections. Very annoying when I have to be in a conference call, watching a movie or doing some gaming. I've looked everywhere online and the only solution I've found is to replace it with an Intel card (which I simply do not want to do). In 5 years Dell has a resale value of 300$ & the macbook 2000$. In Switzerland the 2015 i7 16GB 512GB MBP 13 sells for 750-1200$.
esp with no updates due to ARM yeah. sure its going to be the last intel based gen but the OS will be deprecated as a result, so what's the point? doubt it will hold value that well.
I got in around 2015 a MacBook Pro 2010 (one of the best notebook at its time and without dramatical failures like the 2011+ GPU failures.) for 400$, the owner even replaced the battery at apple before he sold it. Still working awesome in 2020, got like 3 weeks ago also a new battery (Yanec, damn awesome batteries, +400mAh/6Wh compared to original battery)
I dont know why so many people still believe used apple products are so expensive, they are not, you only have to find a nice deal, which is hard to find since some Mac users even try to resell their 1-2 year old MacBook for like 80% of the original value to get "for cheap" the newer model. I found so many like 3-5 year old macs, working ofc for cheap, especially from the users which hate the overheating/soldered SSDs and the bullsh*t apple is doing to prevent the users from fixing their own "Pro" products.
Thats why i even say the newer MacBook Pros dont deserve to be called Pro... any professional usecase will include:
- service, which is some sort of impossible at apple machines
- data recovery, say hello to the T2 chip and soldered SSDs, data recovery is going to be impossible
- battery swaps/Ram upgrades.... something you should consider in a "Pro" product....
With this facts in mind, the last MacBook "Pros" were made in around 2013, newer MBPs are not "Pro" anymore, only some kind of nice looking notebook with decent performance. Therefor, the prices are dropping faster compared to older Macs. But yes, still very often overpriced.
Kokainarienv0gel yeah I upgraded my 2012 MacBook Pro with a terabyte ssd and itâs like working with a brand new laptop!
Do people buy laptops (or any tech for that matter) based on resale value though? At least personally I don't consider that too heavily when I'm purchasing a device.
@@0xC272 I agree that we do not buy a laptop for resale value, but it's great to know that when you're ready for an upgrade, you can actually get value out of it. Like the MacBook Air 2012 I own, it performs today like I bought it yesterday, and if I wanted to sell it, the price (8 years later) for a used one trends at $450-$500. So if I wanted to buy the newer $1,000 MacBook Air, I could save $500; that's half the price. Fair?
Where can I find that wallpaper (Dell XPS)? Thanks ;)
What do you do with these laptop after you use them in your videos? I mean like you dont use them all at once right?
The taller screen on the Dell sells it for me. I love how good the speakers are on a Macbook, though.
What are you talking about? They have the same aspect ratio.
i like macbook webcam the dell one make your face weird also i love the MacOS
My XPS 17 has 4 different quality issues.
1. speakers are humming when laptop is on power adapter
2. left click only works roughly 50% of the time
3. high latency measured with latency mon
4. screen is changing brightness randomly (maybe the reason is software but didn't found it yet)
It's such a beautiful and well build laptop but for this price point to many issues. My Macbook 16 was 100% ok. I am disappointed by Dell i have to say.
How do you say "well built" laptop after listing those issues?
Or do you mean something else by that?
Overplays AceKing possibly the build quality itself, for example if the keyboard flexes when you press it hard, or maybe whether the screen lift the whole chassis when you open it.
The screen changing brightness randomly is an option in your bios. Check there, you should fine an option to turn it off.
The left click issue seems to be on a lot of new XPS 15/17 models where the track pad is loose. The build quality went down from the previous XPS 15 imo. Iâve had mine for a little over 2 years now and the hardware had zero issues brand new and they seem to hold up really well
@@CertifiedSlamboy Sorry... I am not native English :-) . I mean the chassis and screen, the look and the haptic. Everything you see from the outside. This is all very premium. Iâm very uneducated when it comes to technology specs and even when comparing the requirements for programs and such with what comes with the laptop, I still struggle to understand what it all means. Since around May Iâve wanted the XPS 17 because I think it looks amazing but Iâve wondered whether or not I should get it or the MacBook because I would like to be able to make music with it using something like ProTools but I would also like to play certain games. Is the XPS able to do both very well? As far as games go I aim more towards games like Halo, Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Dying Light so definitely not the most taxing ones but Iâd still like to get some advice for what Iâm looking for.
Tl;dr If not the XPS 17, what is the best laptop that can make music as well as game? Thank you.

This was such a hard decision. I ended up going with the Macbook Pro 16 a few weeks ago. It mainly came down to Dell's quality control and reliability over these past few years. I'm sure I would have been happy with both!
quAdxify so well said! After years of having windows laptops, all of that has become increasingly clear. Beyond enterprise use and gaming, very true. When did you start with Mac and what has the progression been like throughout the years for you been like?

There's an 80% chance that your XPS will come with a serious defect... I'm speaking from experience
Small sample size, in all fairness to Dell. Even then, every laptop brand will have defective models. Go look at a HP or Lenovo subreddit.
@-- Ye, it's why in most big tech companies offices are filled with ThinkPads (running Linux) and MacBooks. If you have to rely on that tech and have to pay your employees significant wages, any downtime due those devices failing costs you quite a large amount of money, more than the initially higher investment. I think IBM even released some numbers regarding MacOS and Windows laptops and found that MacBooks amortized themselves big time over the years, if you factor tech support and down-time into the equation.
Iâve had my XOS 17 for about a month now. Still see no defects, it came perfect for me lol

Brilliant comparison between some great laptops! Personally Iâll go for the MacBook cuz I love the minimal simple yet aesthetic design but the XPS looks quite good as well. Also itâd be great if you can do some reviews on some of the new gaming laptops that have come out recently like the legion 5 and nitro 5 cuz I really do admire the style of your reviews!
Does anyone know how far the hinges open? Can it open to 180 degrees?
So about battery life, what if the resolution on both the laptops are kept the same, will the result be different..?
