Dell XPS 15 9500 (2020) Review - MUCH Better Than I Expected

  • The Dell XPS 15 9500 is designed to be one of the best notebooks in 2020. It has a very portable size and weight while also having ultra long battery life, a great keyboard and an amazing screen. The Dell XPS 15 2020 specifications are also really impressive with an Intel i7-10750H and NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti in an ultrabook size chassis but this isn't a gaming notebook, its really focused on productivity. So the Dell XPS 15 sounds like the perfect all-round notebook but there have been some problems too with reviews and user reviews complaining about issues with the trackpad, screen brightness and stability. So how did that impact our testing and XPS 15 9500 review?

      Please Help me decide, FHD vs UHD model
      Honestly if my top criteria are..
      1) watching HQ movies media esp 4k movies
      2) SOME content creation, CZcams VLOGs, short indie films
      3)reading and Studying, some office work
      3) occasional ps3 game emulation
      4) less eyestrain while reading
      Would you take the FHD or UHD version?

    I picked up the 15" frost white (refurbished) a month ago. It did come with the wobbly trackpad, for which I did the tape fix. And except for the hinge issue--where when transported the lid refuses to close unless you press the hinges--I love this thing! It comes out to 3K (CAD) brand new, with my specs (10 gen i7, 16G ram, 512G ssd, GTX 1650 ti, UHD+). I got mine for 1K less. Had I got it new from Dell, I would've sent it right back; no one should be expected to spend this amount of cash for a device that has qc issues. However, I bit the bullet for cash value and form factor: the quality build and screen are simply outstanding! I'll live with the hinge issue. No biggie when considering the dividends. Anyway, thanks for the review. I always value your dispassionate reviews. Keep up the great work!

  • @lumdermaku
    @lumdermaku Před 3 lety +32

    5:56, but that is the infamous trackpad issue....
    12:35, finally someone mentioned the fan behavior. Depending on how you look at it, it can be a good thing or a bad thing. Dell went the Apple way when they approached the fan-behavior, the reason that the fans don't start spinning immediately (like in a classic fan-curve) is that even if the temps are very high, Dell intended to not start the fans because they will be very annoying for those who often do short high-cpu(or gpu) utilizations, that's why. Even if the power draw reaches 70W and temps go to 99C, the fans won't annoy you, they'll remain silent. To me this is one of the selling-points of the XPS 15 9500. On short 100% cpu loads i'd rather let the cpu reach high tdp, very high temps and high clockspeeds for a short period of time while the fans stay off/don't spin a lot and don't fluctuate rather than to hear the fans start spinning immediately after the cpu reaches a certain temp.
    16:00, again, Dell doesn't have to change anything regarding the fans, maybe to add the option to switch to the classic fan curve but not remove this feature. Imagine you're in a quite environment with other people (library, class, at work with coworkers), nobody would want to hear the fans fluctuate all the time while you're doing high cpu/gpu intensive work.

    • @houssamalucad753
      @houssamalucad753 Před 3 lety +1

      That fan curve really took me off-guard when I got my first macbook and did a light render on it. I just wish we had a choice of either this or a more agressive curve like you said since fast and often changes in temps are not good for electronics.

    But with my current 9560 I could not be happier! While the matte 1080p screen of the 9530 was good but I *love* the 4k OLED screen on the 9560! Materials and build quality are pure luxury and with the understated styling this laptop is a thing of beauty! It also has a lot of power which is greatly appreciated for video editing.

    Great review. As an owner of older model 9560 I have been through all of this. I though I would have a gaming beast, looking slim and being light. Soon I realised there are compromises to be done. You can push it to gaming but that required some modifications like repasting it, turning turboboost off, putting thermal pads on vrms, lifting it for good cooling, undervolting(rip 10th gen users or if u updated bios) and disabling horrible dptf for managing the heat and cooling. Laptop then throtteled less and gaming was a bit more stable but getting it off the charger meant battery life under 1.5hrs.
    At the end I decided to revert everything, keep only my undervolt and turn off turboboost for playing on lower details just to keep it cool. Main use is now editing and school and that’s that it is meant for. It is not a gaming laptop, but still, a great laptop. Just don’t expect miracles. Physics works even when it comes to Dell.

    A good use case for this laptop is for people who want a desktop replacement and some good power on the go. Someone who does some real work but enjoys some light to medium gaming on the side, or benefit from the gpu in a professional capacity. Not everyone needs the utmost performance out of their hardware so by trading off a little bit of it for a better experience using it is something people can value.

    i'm writing this comment on the new XPS 15 base model. I like it so far. I got it a few weeks ago, so I dodge a lot of the hardware issues that people were reporting (i.e. track pad issues, brightness problems, etc.). How do I like it? The display is gorgeous and it gets 10 hrs battery life while browsing the internet, doing mild tasks, and listening to Spotify. It has been an amazing laptop for casual stuff.
    Will I keep it or return it before the 30 return policy runs out? Still trying to decide. While it has been amazing so far, I do wish it had a little more power in it. I do a lot simulation based statistical work and the CPU is a little slow for my taste. That said, I love the battery life and the display. Idk if there would be another laptop which would have more power while retaining this computer's great battery life. I knew going into this, that I would be trading power for battery life. But I guess I'm still sorting that out for myself.
    Feel free to ask me any questions you might have. Lockdown has got me missing human contact lol.

    Okay, around 16:00 minutes in... So the reason Dell won't change the fan curve to the load of the system rather than temperatures is because as it's not meant to be a gaming laptop, people will use it for creative purposes, which mean short bursts of high tdp. Now as they would usually be short bursts, people complained the fans kicked up too often and caused some nuisance where as now it will kick up to high gear for a short while at the expense of high temps while keeping quiet for longer.
    if that makes sense...
