Dell XPS 15 9500 (2020) Review - MUCH Better Than I Expected

- The Dell XPS 15 9500 is designed to be one of the best notebooks in 2020. It has a very portable size and weight while also having ultra long battery life, a great keyboard and an amazing screen. The Dell XPS 15 2020 specifications are also really impressive with an Intel i7-10750H and NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti in an ultrabook size chassis but this isn't a gaming notebook, its really focused on productivity. So the Dell XPS 15 sounds like the perfect all-round notebook but there have been some problems too with reviews and user reviews complaining about issues with the trackpad, screen brightness and stability. So how did that impact our testing and XPS 15 9500 review?

Enjoy the timestamps guys! Still dialing them in though. :)
Appreciate every youtuber who does this! Shows they care to make the content more "easier" for some
Amazing video! Thanks. Pls I need your advice I have the option to pick between the XPS15 9500 (new) and the Razer Blade 15 2018 (144hz GTX 1060 MAXq) Refurbished. I will be doing 3d modelling and rendering and some occasional gaming. Pls which would you recommend
Thank you for such a DETAILED review.
Please Help me decide, FHD vs UHD model
Honestly if my top criteria are..
1) watching HQ movies media esp 4k movies
2) SOME content creation, CZcams VLOGs, short indie films
3)reading and Studying, some office work
3) occasional ps3 game emulation
4) less eyestrain while reading
Would you take the FHD or UHD version?
You might want to update the description, but gotta love ???? who not only provided the notebook for free but also sponsored the video.
I hope next time it would come with 2k-3k mini led display.
" Jack of all trades , master of none BUT better than a master of one " - lots of people forgot the rest
Ah yes my daily dose of watching reviews of random tech stuff I can't afford.
These are a little on the pricey side. :(
M S Oh snap!
@@APrzap too bad it's 70 now
@@MZ95 I'm an engineering student so buying this laptop is an investment
You can afford it now! I hope 😂
you have the best close up shots of the XPS 15, looks so good. I feel no regret ordering xps 15 after this video.
That thumbnail is well deserving of it's own award holy🔥
Waiting for “wish it had AMD” comments
wish it had AMD
Well yes. we have slowly gotten used to pay above 1000 for a laptop that is reliable quality. Anything below was either bottlenecked' or lacked quality in many areas... Hopefully competition will help get things interesting
I don't need to wish. I got a Zephyrus G14 and will never look back
Lil Lobo same here:) might not be as tightly built, but sill very satisfied with the quality. And perfect size for me
lonzo for mvp Nah, I'm good with my g14, thanks.
Watching the review again and I am so glad you mentioned liking the 1080P display. I have opted for that and feel better about it.
"It's all about perspective". Thank you, spot on! Another great review, as always.
I think you were the first one to mention the screen specs at 1080p. I was waiting for that.
I watched almost all XPS 15 reviews and you guys did the best job ever! 😊
I picked up the 15" frost white (refurbished) a month ago. It did come with the wobbly trackpad, for which I did the tape fix. And except for the hinge issue--where when transported the lid refuses to close unless you press the hinges--I love this thing! It comes out to 3K (CAD) brand new, with my specs (10 gen i7, 16G ram, 512G ssd, GTX 1650 ti, UHD+). I got mine for 1K less. Had I got it new from Dell, I would've sent it right back; no one should be expected to spend this amount of cash for a device that has qc issues. However, I bit the bullet for cash value and form factor: the quality build and screen are simply outstanding! I'll live with the hinge issue. No biggie when considering the dividends. Anyway, thanks for the review. I always value your dispassionate reviews. Keep up the great work!
Great review! I got mine last week and I absolutely love it.
5:56, but that is the infamous trackpad issue....
12:35, finally someone mentioned the fan behavior. Depending on how you look at it, it can be a good thing or a bad thing. Dell went the Apple way when they approached the fan-behavior, the reason that the fans don't start spinning immediately (like in a classic fan-curve) is that even if the temps are very high, Dell intended to not start the fans because they will be very annoying for those who often do short high-cpu(or gpu) utilizations, that's why. Even if the power draw reaches 70W and temps go to 99C, the fans won't annoy you, they'll remain silent. To me this is one of the selling-points of the XPS 15 9500. On short 100% cpu loads i'd rather let the cpu reach high tdp, very high temps and high clockspeeds for a short period of time while the fans stay off/don't spin a lot and don't fluctuate rather than to hear the fans start spinning immediately after the cpu reaches a certain temp.
16:00, again, Dell doesn't have to change anything regarding the fans, maybe to add the option to switch to the classic fan curve but not remove this feature. Imagine you're in a quite environment with other people (library, class, at work with coworkers), nobody would want to hear the fans fluctuate all the time while you're doing high cpu/gpu intensive work.
That fan curve really took me off-guard when I got my first macbook and did a light render on it. I just wish we had a choice of either this or a more agressive curve like you said since fast and often changes in temps are not good for electronics.
they probably try to appeal to their 'fan' base
All newer production xps don’t have trackpad issues anymore
@@givinnatanlie4619 go to r/Dell in reddit and you'll see that there are still people who are getting the trackpad issue in both the xps 15 and 17, even though they ordered those laptops in july, that's post mid-june which is when Dell released a statement that all post mid-june (or sometimes around that) orders will not have the trackpad issue, which is clearly not true.
4900HS would have been the perfect fit for this laptop. Maybe next year haha
What about Thunderbolt?
@@matheusgomes7176 by next yeat USB 4 will be out with the same speeds.
Ryzen 4000 mobile chips are only limited to x8 PCI express lanes, that's why they are not sold with high end GPUs, they just can't handle all the bandwidth of GPU, PCIe SSDs, thunderbolts, etc
@@abhinavgangwar6303 but this dell only has a 1650ti right...
@@abhinavgangwar6303 I didn't know that! On the desktop they have more lanes than intel!
But 8 lanes is enough for any current gen GPU. Pretty sure Hardware Unboxed tested 8 lanes with desktop GPUs and only had a less performance when using a card with limited 4GBs of Vram at low bus speeds which ment it had to acess system RAM all the time. While the 1650ti is 4Gb I'm sure the next gen GPUs will have more.
This new chassis has so much potential, Dell just needs to step up and eradicate all the quality control issues and drop a Ryzen in there.
Exactly. Loose trackpad? Really? Also, charging issue on the XPS17? Wow. Imagine paying $2k+ and have these problems. Not to mention, the headache of dealing with Dell directly for the return.
@@tr7287 ya I remember the days when del and Toshiba were the best you could get and you didn't have to spend a fortune to get one that was good
I've just got my new dell xps 15. Absolutely amazing!!!
Congratulations! An outstanding video and review...
I really respect this kind of information. Hardcore nerdiness!!! I've never seen a review of half of these things! Very cool. Makes me want to learn more.
Your voice, your face, your way of speaking is soothing!
Love the design on your hoodie
Using the 2019 model, no issues so far. Perfection in every way.
@Dylan _ I agreed!
Dylan _ I would better specs for cheaper the cheapest Mac Pro vs the cheapest dell XP’s the xps cheaper and better
How about editing?
Ahhhh that screen!!
Im convinced to buy just for the screen!

If you can w8 because they seem to have issues with the first badges, probably because they had change so many parts.
Also if you don't need it this year I bet AMD version next year will come and you will be hitting yourself, not only for the raw power but the probably better battery.
@@hellNo116 yeah totally agree 👍

This is what happens when intel has been left unchallenged in the laptop cpu market until litrally 2 months ago. We would still be on 4/4 i5 if ryzen was a failure on desktop.
@@enjoshi-godrez8775 No, we'd be at 6 cores for the mainstream desktop. The plan was to move to 6 cores with the 8000 series the entire time. The jump to 8 cores though right away was thanks to AMD though.
@@nap8187 Yes, you're probably right. I think thredripper was the bigger jack knife for intels trajectory. They were forced to sell what could of been a $8000 xeon platinum chip in the i9-7980XE (which is the 10980xe) for less than $1k. Sure, its not a scalable, but that is a massive blow to intels image as the 'premium' alternative. I have no doubt that the 8 and 10 core consumer parts are also enterprise chips.
I appreciate and love your reviews, thank you,
Ravi
Been using the 9530 and 9560 (2019 models, both i9) for work and while both are incredible machines the 9530 was a real lemon for me with many issues that could not be solved even with help of the fantastic customer support.
But with my current 9560 I could not be happier! While the matte 1080p screen of the 9530 was good but I *love* the 4k OLED screen on the 9560! Materials and build quality are pure luxury and with the understated styling this laptop is a thing of beauty! It also has a lot of power which is greatly appreciated for video editing.
The other incredible thing is the price here: in my case it was about 4000€ - Lucky for me my company paid for it. But this is also one of the few cases where I feel that the product actually reflects the high price.
My XPS 17 9700 arrived last week. No issues at all and am now running Ubuntu. Fantastic machine!
3:32 nice wallpaper on that dell. Anyone knows what's the name of it? Or what is the link of it?
Great review!
Thanks
I am awaiting the delivery of my XPS 15.
Purchased specifically to work with Lightroom.
Let’s see if it performs as advertised!
Which monitor did you choose?

Your review was super good and love dell . Thanks
I bought it back in june and damn I can confirm that there were issues but also that its the greatest laptop
Of course it’s really tempting to upgrade, but I’m going to keep using my 9570 for a few more years
Haha on the same boat here (I have the 9560)
Your reviews are amazing, they're helping me to decide which laptop to buy. Thanks for your work.
By the way, I would like to know about your recording gear, what camera / mic do you use? you have an amazing quality in your videos!
actually I like that the middle section isn't really flush - hard to say if that's a bug or feature, but this way you won't get greasy screen just because it was touching the keyboard.
That is a gorgeous laptop man. I would get the 1550$ model. One of the best designs I've ever seen of a laptop.
can you tell me its name exactly
After a traffic tea accident, my Surface Book is no more and I suddenly found myself in need of a new laptop at least a year earlier than I expected. After much searching over the past 2 months, I finally settled on the XPS 15 over the MSI Prestige 15 and Razer Blade 15 when Costco offered the i7-10875, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB, 4K OLED, and 1650 Ti for 1999 USD. I really couldn't be happier with this machine in the week I've had it.
I am only a light gamer, but I do some photo and video processing and this has had excellent performance.
Yes, I wish I had another year or two so that manufacturers had time to figure out the kinks of writing with Ryzen 4000 series processors, but there's just no time for that. I'm happier than I expected to be with this machine.
Ordered mine and perfect review. Great vid.
Hey. How is your product? Any quality control issues?
@@danielgagnon8201 hey dude, sorry I missed this. I cancelled in the end. Just couldn’t do it man. So many QC issues especially at that price point. I just said stuff it and bought a MacBook Pro in the end. Best thing ever and highly recommend it for professional use!
Sorry couldn’t help you further. I just had to go with Apple given I have always liked their quality control over any other brand.
My 15 will be here in a day or two. I got it for video editing as well as work. I've been on a laptop that is now 7 years old with a 5 year old ssd and it's starting to slow down. I opted for the more color accurate 4k Screen and the 8 core i7 10875h. I'm really excited

I'm waiting for 17" Xps review I'm considering it my current laptop it's a mid 2012 MacBookpro it's time to upgrade
Gonna wait it out to see if amd gets dropped into dells soon. Gonna just build a pc in the mean time or upgrade my displays. Not much of a gamer but love a good display and good audio
Got a XPS 17, incredible machine. Only down side is my first one had track pad issues. Two weeks later I received a second unit, which has its graphics card fail every day and it's taking another two weeks to receive a replacement. Also battery drain issues are still a problem.
It seems that the upcoming batch of units should fix most issues, but it's definitely frustrating paying $2800+ on a laptop to not have a functioning unit for over a month :/
Also I love y'alls videos 😭😍
Yeah, that's what we were saying. Ours was from a later batch but that doesn't eliminate all the hesitation we have in recommending the XPS series. Its really embarrassing that Dell's flagship notebooks are experiencing so many problems.
@@HardwareCanucks just finished watching, and definitely appreciate the comments on quality control. Even with the weariness I'm definitely gonna be keeping the third unit I receive (if it works) because it really is the entire package in terms of incredible design and performance!
Just bought this one with the i9 and 32gb ram. 1tb storage. Can’t wait to use it!
Selling my old laptop to purchase this! Been needing an upgrade for some time and I think this might be the perfect Windows OS based laptop! I’m a full time college student and being able to get any and all school work done, along with running some warzone game with the boys... makes this an awesome laptop! Thanks for the review!

Wish it had amd......
Hey Eber,Dmitry or anyone from hardware Canucks, could you please review the asus rog m15.....it is an unpopular laptop but I think it is a very good competitor for its price...

@@mba849 mmm....but in best buy it was just $1600 anyways let us see if someone reviews it...
That is one nice hoodie man.
Great review. As an owner of older model 9560 I have been through all of this. I though I would have a gaming beast, looking slim and being light. Soon I realised there are compromises to be done. You can push it to gaming but that required some modifications like repasting it, turning turboboost off, putting thermal pads on vrms, lifting it for good cooling, undervolting(rip 10th gen users or if u updated bios) and disabling horrible dptf for managing the heat and cooling. Laptop then throtteled less and gaming was a bit more stable but getting it off the charger meant battery life under 1.5hrs.
At the end I decided to revert everything, keep only my undervolt and turn off turboboost for playing on lower details just to keep it cool. Main use is now editing and school and that’s that it is meant for. It is not a gaming laptop, but still, a great laptop. Just don’t expect miracles. Physics works even when it comes to Dell.
I've had mine for 2 months and I've gotten it repaired 3 times already. First touchpad wobble then battery issues then the keyboard slide off the metal bottom. It's really annoying but thankfully the customer service is great
For nearly the same price you can get an hp envy 15.
Specs-
Core i7 10750H
Rtx 2060 max q
Vapor chamber cooling system
For 1500 usd.
And considering the problems people have had with the new XPS, I feel like the envy is a much better deal.
It's sad to see that great laptops that offer great value and a premium build don't get a review from the bigger techtubers, and hence not many people know about them.
Does it have shit battery life tho? And I’ve had bad experiences with HP. So ima switch from HP to Dell. I wanna get a sleek looking device that can handle anything and open up programs quickly. My HP Pavillion x360 i3 8GB of ram did none of that
I wish that model can come to Amazon so I can buy it (international purchase). Would anyone here has an idea if that could happen in the near future? Great comment!
The brightness/color shift can be turned off in the BIOS.
I don't understand why Dell has it on out of the box. Makes no sense if you ask me...
Would love your thoughts on the xps 17 , or the latest precision 5750. Thanks!!
Great review! Really helpful. Wish you did one for the Mac book Pro 16 as well, considering this is supposed to be the MacBook Pro killer.
A good use case for this laptop is for people who want a desktop replacement and some good power on the go. Someone who does some real work but enjoys some light to medium gaming on the side, or benefit from the gpu in a professional capacity. Not everyone needs the utmost performance out of their hardware so by trading off a little bit of it for a better experience using it is something people can value.
Dell needs to do a amd option. When they do ryzen and thunderbolt together, I'd buy one
I had a dell xps 19". it was not really a laptop, it had a 3.5 hdd, 2 sound cards and the game card could play almost any game on either ultra or medium. My cousin had to have an expensive build pc to be better than my laptop. ahhh i loved it so much.
Do you know if they plan a 2 in 1 version of this 15" 16/10 screen?
Thanks for the review (am a Tentree fan also). Not in the market to buy right now but possibly later in year, will see how the reliability holds up then. HP has a light/thin 15" Z workstation laptop that's probably similar performance coming out shortly, curious to see how it compares (likely pricier...). Am I right in thinking that to get touch on the XPS15 you have to get the 4K display? Have read that the 1080 is really good on it and hard to tell apart from the 4K, but I do want touch.
The model I want is on sale for $1500. I just bought a Lenovo Yoga C940 yesterday for $1100. I wish I waited!! This looks fricken amazing and the 15" looks great
Does the 4k screen make much of a visible/tangible difference? For watching Netflix for example
i get the same kind of audio clipping that you got on the webcam from my Asus deep blue zenbook, except it is out of the main speakers... a restart of windows has been the fix but it seems to be related to chrome.
I bought the XPS 15 9500 a few months ago - upgraded the NVMe M.2 from the 1TB KIOXIA to the WD Black 1TB and the RAM from 16 to 64, came with the I7 and the 1650Ti 4K touch screen and could not be happier - I have had no issues and chances are you wont either, so dont let this guys negative comments dissuade you. I love mine !
Linux uses the middle click! Dell sells a dev version of these laptops. They have Ubuntu on them and it makes use of the middle click!
Dev Versions sucks, it has soldered ram... and only for XPS 13.
@@cla1814 yeah considering it's not that hard to dual-boot or even just run WSL2 these days...

i think i found where my "quarantine 15" pounds came from, dude, looking good!
Hey man! I love your videos, I was wondering if you could help me out I’ve been trying to do my best research for a replacement laptop and i’m leaning towards the Dell XPS 15. I’m in architecture and need to run 3D modelling software, CAD software, Adobe Suite and other things. Would you recommend this laptop? Would you suggest other laptops around this budget? Thanks!
Would you recommend this laptop for editing 4k videos, or which one would you recommend beside MacBook. Thank you for your opinion.
Sincerely

Thanks for the video man. 🙏 Can u suggest some laptops for the best performance other than gaming laptops. ?
I think the microphone issue is from the sensitivity. I turned mine down to 95% on control panel and turned it down even more on apps like discord and zoom to get rid of the little static noise issue.
It's been quite a while.. but I still don't know this skinny guy... Lookin Good Bro!
Dude your sweater is dope
You convinced me 1080 p or 1200 p matt screen is good. No need to spend more for 4K gloss !
Looked into the XPS on recommendations and ended up going for the G5 I7-10750H and RTX 2070MQ instead. The way I see it is that I can use an external monitor if the display is such an issue. That and if content creation dries up like it has for most of the year I have something that can be used for gaming.
Razer be like "How you gonna ditch us like that maaan?"
@trixterii _ Wha
The XPS 15 and XPS 17 though the same are vastly different systems based on hardware. After being one of those with a defective XPS15 and sending it back I am reluctant to get another but I might consider the XPS 17 which seems to do more and be better in many ways when compared to the XPS 15.
new subscriber here. good review, but hows that fan noise when using photo editing software? still sound like a jet engine aka xps 15 9560?
I don’t know much about laptops but I just bought this laptop for my architecture class. I hope I made the right choice.
I bought one a few weeks ago, and in the first 3 days the trackpad broke and the notebook crashed 5 times on me. So I turned it back. And I think I can only be convinced to buy another one if it comes with a more effecient processor, be it from AMD or the next Intel generations.
Suggestions between the xps 15 9500 2020 vs the razer blade stealth 13 2020? Which is better overall but also for gaming?
Any plans to review New DELL G7 15 7500?? Been out for a while but can’t find any reviews...
I'll pick one up when they use AMD cpus
They probably designed it before Zen 2 APUs were available. Let's be honest, nobody expected Zen 2 mobile CPUs to be so incredible.
Devin Dykstra also Dell works veeeery closely with Intel. They get a lot of MDF from Intel to develop products. If you want a similar laptop with AMD, check out what HP has in their x360 stuff. Really solid.
Same.
it took few more months for manufacturers to design new motherboard tho. like the guy above no one expecting that, and it is also risky to use a new product because it may lose profit. but seeing how amd performs then there will soon be a lot more amd products.
@@thenatous_ also, thunderbolt isn't easy to use with AMD processors.
My XPS 17 really has issues with fan curve! Dell really needs to fix this.
Hi there, am I correct in saying that for a matte screen version of this laptop, you can't get it in touchscreen? I've just got an XPS 13 2-in-1 9310 and the gloss screen is giving me headaches already (yes, even with their "anti-glare" technology) so I'm thinking to swap it for this and that a compromise on the touch aspect is a a good one, sad they don't seem to have that option though!
Hi really nice review. Cud u pls advice me on which of these - dell xps, asus zenbook/zenbook duo, hp spectre x360 or lenovo yoga c940 would be better to get if i m a non gamer, but need to use multiple apps n softwares for my scientific work ?
Can I use this laptop for solid works and unigraphics design and assemblies?
It's pretty great. I'd still go for an AMD-based ThinkPad though. CPU clock frequencies are much more stable and temperatures are lower. 50 degrees at the surface is pretty high for a traditional (non-gaming specific) laptop.
Yeah typing on 50 degrees doesn't sound very comfortable
@@SrihariMohan it's commonplace for gaming laptops though. Which is sad itself. Physics doesn't just bow into submission just because you want to shove two heating elements in a body with little thermal mass and meager heat exchangers. Bigger machines like the ThinkPad P series run pretty cool with gaming/workstation level performance, because they have um... larger coolers and thermal mass and therefore are >2.6kg. 😂😭
Yes, ordered mine a few hours ago. Ended up return my new razer blade 15. And dell has a sell on them right now. 200 dollars off.
How is the speakers compare to say the 16 inch MacBook Pro? I had one but return it because I want to upgrade, but if the Windows has something equivalent, I might as well go for the Dell
5:49 trackpad is too big
Macbook pro 16: hold my touchbar
Hi, do you suggest getting an intel core i5 or i7 with this laptop for a university student?
Where did you get that jacket. Love the tree line
Can you recommend an XPS that is built for gaming? Was looking at an MSI, but I wouldn't mind this because of the form factor.
I want the screen of the dell xps to be on all laptops!!!
i'm writing this comment on the new XPS 15 base model. I like it so far. I got it a few weeks ago, so I dodge a lot of the hardware issues that people were reporting (i.e. track pad issues, brightness problems, etc.). How do I like it? The display is gorgeous and it gets 10 hrs battery life while browsing the internet, doing mild tasks, and listening to Spotify. It has been an amazing laptop for casual stuff.
Will I keep it or return it before the 30 return policy runs out? Still trying to decide. While it has been amazing so far, I do wish it had a little more power in it. I do a lot simulation based statistical work and the CPU is a little slow for my taste. That said, I love the battery life and the display. Idk if there would be another laptop which would have more power while retaining this computer's great battery life. I knew going into this, that I would be trading power for battery life. But I guess I'm still sorting that out for myself.
Feel free to ask me any questions you might have. Lockdown has got me missing human contact lol.
When it comes to gaming, it should also be noted that the XPS display is only a 60hz panel.
I can’t decide between the FHD+ and UHD+ model. 500€ difference.
I7 10750h
16go
512 ssd
1650 gtx
Lightroom most of the time.
Any advice ?
Thanks
Okay, around 16:00 minutes in... So the reason Dell won't change the fan curve to the load of the system rather than temperatures is because as it's not meant to be a gaming laptop, people will use it for creative purposes, which mean short bursts of high tdp. Now as they would usually be short bursts, people complained the fans kicked up too often and caused some nuisance where as now it will kick up to high gear for a short while at the expense of high temps while keeping quiet for longer.
if that makes sense...
Xps 15 has given me so many problems. My first one had screen glitching, screen freezing, volume not working, brightness not changing, and loose trackpad. After getting a replacement it still had problems with screen freezing, screen glitching, volume not working correctly, and freezing on startup causing it to only turn on the fan. Its hard to get help at night sometimes even though dell premium support plus is supposed to 24/7. If you buy this laptop return it asap if you experience any issues
Is it worth it buying the Dell XPS 15 Core i9 version? I badly need a replacement laptop and it’s the only version available right now in my location
Hi there. Can you tell me if you know please, can you record audio from stereo mix, audio playing on your computer, on Adobe Audition on this Dell XPS? Thanks :)
You guys need to compare this machine to the Lenovo X1 Extreme. Direct competitors and I believe both are great student laptops for students in engineering or design related programs.
Even on your demo the new laptop has visible amount of sweat from fingers and it looks like it easily stick to the serface. It actually appears right away after you touch it and you even make an effort to wipe it out right away.
I work with clients so I worried about aesthetics. Is this something (moist from fingers) that snaps and stick to the surface laptop easily and traces are really visible? How did it behave in your testing?
Thank you for the review!
