for those interested in the surface book 3 comparison. Red Dead 2 gets about 5 more FPS on the SB3. Witcher is more or less the same as the XPS 15 (based on Tally ho's SFB3 gaming vid).
SB3 has such good GPU performance. Real shame about its 4 core CPU. Feels like they could have put +6 cores if they used AMD as they heat up less.

Man I really hope thermals on the XPS 17 are like this as well, and then with more performance - rtx 2060! But on the other hand I keep feeling sad that they didn't go for the AMD 4900 CPU. Imagine performance and thermals with that cpu
currently getting jumping frames, used throttlestop, undervolted cpu, enabled speedshit EPP, repasted cpu+gpu, but in the game CSGO on minimum setting frames still drop less than 60. any advice?

How to boost CPU and GPU? I have same cpu but with 32 Gb ram version , in Gta v framerates are capped at 30 i tried to change in settings but still every time it drops to 30. Would be interesting to try undervolting the CPU to have even better thermals. I would love to see Dell releasing the arctic white version of both XPS 15/17.
Could you try run benchmarks in 4k max settings and check if throttling is there? Maybe it does it cause it already outputs 60fps. I have the same weird issue with my pc. When i play LoL on my PC there is like 200 fps (4k max) and gpu (Titan X pascal) usage is like 20% (for other games it behaves normally 90-100% gpu usage). Maybe it is just a weird nvidia plus intel optimization.

I just got my XPs 15 and Ive been doing a bit of light gaming but I see that it keeps on having thermal throttling happen on the bios. Idk if theres a fix to this or not but I hope Dell sends out the next Bios soon

The 16W on the cpu is a good thing for gaming, I have seen very high gpu frequencies by reducing manually in XTU from 56W to anywhere from 20W to 30W on my 9570 on any game that isn't CPU bottlenecked. This happens as the max temp for the gpu is (75º in my 9570) much lower than the cpu's thermal limit, therefore, gpu gets strangled thermaly. Basically, reduce CPU TDP until any of its cores is struggling to keep up.

Thanks for the extensive coverage tally, you're definatley offer the best and most in depth xps coverage out of everyone in the youtube space. I was gonna pick up the 15 for use at uni since gaming laptop battery life is horrible but I also wanted to do some gaming (mainly CSGO) on this thing when im not studying. I'd be using an external monitor for it though. Do you think that the xps is the right choice to make for that since I love everything else about it?

Adrin Nosrati 17” as small as they made it is a ridiculous size to carry around everyday especially being on campus. I think 15” would be the sweetspot for school work and if the only game you’re playing is csgo on 1080 and with an external monitor. No need to spend the extra money, and lug around the extra weight unless you enjoy it.
Tim Huynh the 17 is actually smaller than most 15 inch laptops out right now. Sorry I don’t know the specifics but the screen is 17 inches because of the insane bezels. I first though the 17 was going to be huge but I saw the measurements and they were the same as my 15 inch laptop
@@R_athanak It is still big. For example, it is still bigger than MBP 16 inch. Some people find MBP 16 inch to be too big to carry around. Depends on individual.
Al pha It is also quite heavy I heard. XPS laptops are quite compact I think. (Quite heavy compared to other laptops, I’m not sure how heavy it actually is).

I have heard countless reviews that said upgrade to UHD is not worth as practically not much difference can be seen. Fhd is beautiful too and save battery life as well
Great stuff 👍 Wonder what the PL1 is when doing CPU work after the new bios? As you say 60fps is fine so might as well only use 15w if that is all is needed.
PL1 is 70W. Went up from 68W. I want more power than 15W gaming though. I mean I like how quiet it is but it was only in the 80s with 40w/40w cpu and GPU.

65w will be plenty unless you’re rendering or gaming ect. It will just draw from the battery if it does not have enough power

if you are considering the wifi 6e card replacement on the Dell XPS 15 9500 being described online and in CZcams it wont work because the killer chip is soddered to the board and looks nothing like the one being shown in any of the videos. Which actually sucks.....and is not even mentioned in this video

The display is fine for gaming.
High refresh only makes sense if you have high frames rates. But if you play CS GO Fortnight or overwatch it’s might be worth it

Deciding on this same thing as well. I really want the oled but the new xps 15 is totally remodeled and is very nice. The old one also has thermal issues and it’s WiFi card is supposedly trash. So I’m waiting on more reviews of this new one to see how it is

Funny that they indeed did some overshooting with the bios update in the other direction. Why is it so hard to get it right? Haha. You'd expect the people at Dell to just test it the way you do and then create the optimal bios values from that experience

MY XPS 15 9500 thermal throttles so hard while playing COD ill get 2 rounds at 60-80FPS and then shoots down to 4FPS freezes up and almost crashes ... quite disappointing knowing that specs that the DELL XPS 15 comes in... For the record i have the I7, 16GB GTX 1650TI version. No undervolting available so its quite a bummer.
4k or fhd+ I'm a coder and does some creative works occasionally
If the pixel response is 35ms then you might be at 60fps, but you are at least 2 frames behind, - and I guess the older OLED has almost instant pixel response? - I guess if you are rendering then maybe the high end graphics card makes sense, but as a programmer, not sure its worth it anymore. I was pretty excited about a 17" gaming / programming machine, but guess I will look for a deal on the OLED.

TBH, I’m in a weird laptop situation right now: I need a laptop for year 9, but I’m allowed to play games or edit video on it for my friend, and I was dead set on the new 120Hz Razer Blade 13 until I saw the screen to body ratio of this sexy beast.
