The Gypsy King Will: u gotta buy me a new one

Why do people always repeat things said in videos
@@-Erebus Because it is funny and silly :3
Erebus Khan that wasn’t said
He hand forged that from 5160? Dayum boy!!! Who cares it broke? The fact that you did it is a Herculean feat in itself
With his hammers breaking on him as well.
Strength test guy: "you guys remember me?"
- Conor McGregor hidden somewhere in the building: "WHO THE FOOK IS THAT GUY!?"
No high tech modern equipment either .
Why is it so hard to forge from spring steel? Most swords use 5160
Kinda funny that the blade broke in the middle, not where the crack was.
My heart is with the younger fellow. He was met with a lot more challenges and he did great.
How was he "met with 'more' challenges'?
It's about who makes the best sword, not about who faces the most challenges
Stefan Kok well his hammers kept breaking and some other small things, he clearly did more than his competitor which makes him more of an underdog

Will's sword passed the kill test with a single hit, completely cutting the pig carcass in twine. Even though it broke on the strength test, the fact that he forged it by hand, with broken tools, and no advanced power equipment is a huge accomplishment in and of itself, and it still killed as impressively as Bobby's sword. Mad props to Will. Bobby aight.
They need to have two identical forges for the competitors.
except say you are a guy who has only every practiced doing it by hand, but now you got to use a forge you never used and tools you are unaccustomed to, or say you are someone who uses all modern high tech tools. Now you are stuck with doing it by hand (or basic tools). Sure it seems fair on the outside, but it would be best to let the blacksmith use the forges they are used to and the tools they know. Yes in this case it sucks because this old dude just cut his blade out, heat treated it, and sharpened it (shouldn't be allowed in my opinion) while the other guy was plagued with all kinds of issues, but we see numerous cases where a guy in some make shift forge with a hammer and anvil beat out a guy with all the fancy and high-tech equipment.
seconding A-DrewG's point i think its better for the competitors to be allowed to use what they are used to rather than forcing them to use identical forges. However having something to level out the playing field is a good idea.
@@danshakuimo but give the option to use there own forge or the one the show has I think would be more fair because that kid had a really low budget setup and I felt bad for him if they had the same stuff the kid probably would have won tbh
Yeah, kind of an unfair advantage to the guys with super modern forges.
It should be like masterchef, where everybody has the same equipment and same resources, but it's up to them how they use it creatively
Lol. Each smither have different techniques or process.
Will is my good friend I’m at his forge right now making railroad spike knives with him haha. Bro killed it, wish we could have seen what he could do with more advanced equipment!
@@cheyennelayton he could win it now with the right equipment
your buddy is an actual smith, not just a cheater who cut the blade form out of sheet steel. and the fact that he still managed to put up that good if an efford shows that he had a lot of potential. i showed this video to an ex-swiss champion of smithing and even he was impressed with what he managed to do in a shed. he said in swiss german that "this boy would have easily won when he had worked in his (the ex-swiss champions) forge"
Still made Hodgenville proud!
I don't understand how that was even acceptable for the finale. Will was the only one who actually "forged" something. I'm calling b.s on the other guy's blade but your buddy did an amazing job.
That just shows that we here in Kentucky aren’t going soft when we make our blades we go doing it the old fashioned way! Go job Will!
An episode of "who has the most modern steel crafting equipment" is on!
@Noyce Gaming Stock removal is a perfectly valid way to make a knife, and even a sword. Albion makes them this way, Jay Fisher, John Lewis Jensen, and I think even Bob Loveless made them that way. They are regarded as some of the best in the industry. There's many ways to do it, and one way is not necessarily better than the other.
@Noyce Gaming because it is
@Noyce Gaming Both ways have their merits, and I wouldn't regard either as better or worse than the other. Also, the general meaning of forging is the shaping of metal.
@Noyce Gaming I take it you drew all these conclusion from this short, edited clip. If you actually saw the episode, you'd see Bobby actually forging it out. But actually checking that takes more effort than slagging someone off unnecessarily like an asshat.
@@Patrick2345454 Agree, but with the time constraints one with the modern equipment has an edge.

He put in so much work on that blade it made me so sad to see it break on the first hit. Won my respect 100%.
Who cares. Will hand forged a massive sword in a shed with a hammer and a furnace that wasnt even big enough the fit the entire blade. Bobby cut a peice of steel and used a belt sander. I think I know who won.
If it doesn't work who cares how you made it! It is still a failer.
"I think I know who won." yeah, the guy whose sword didn't snap in 1/2.

Because it was.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s still a skill to it, but the kid that took a piece of blank steel and hammered it into shape fits more with the spirit of the show.
Did you watch the full episode? Cause I did. And the old guy forged. He drew it out with a press then finished by hand with a hammer. Just cause its has clean lines doesn’t mean a laser did it.

Well, as opposed to a power hammer or hydraulic press. That’s still forging.
Now cutting a form out of a piece of steel, that’s not forging
“Good job buddy” my lord that was precious
Why is this show called forged in fire when they allow contestants to simply cut blades out of sheet steel?
if its at least heat treated they might let it pass but they have kicked people for just grinding the blade
@@Maveryik Christ I assumed that was the very least they did. I am amazed anyone would not harden the steel.
@TheSkyWhale Hey Big Man, I know that. But cutting out steel is not forging, which is why I questioned the title. It would need to be hardened in a forge at least. Cutting out a shape and then sharpening the edge is not forging in fire. Cutting with water would be a more appropriate title in some cases.
This question literally answered the question in my mind about this series for a long time now. Almost every blade in this series has been thin for something that you would expect to be used and abused. You would think some of them would make thicker and properly forged blades for the purpose. It reminds me of how the older Japanese swords made during the era when they were still often used to kill are apparently historically thicker than modern forged practice swords with an actual cutting edge. Perhaps they are now too overconfident in the better quality of steel they can use nowadays?
Forging means to heat metal and beat it into shape with a hammer. That's what they're doing.
I love to hear “ It will kill “

The dude that won had a top of the line shop/tools and the kid that lost had a shed with broken hammers it really wasn't a competition.
True! He even had steal cut from a professionally fabricated sheet of steel! He did t have to do anything other than cut his blade shape and heat treat it! I also hate hate hate! The strength test! Those weapons should never be used to chop ice, it's blasphemy! Test their strength on animal bones, shields and armour, that would be a far more realistic test not to mention proper use! @@rickool07 a weapon like this is not made to chop ice. you can just as well try to cut stone, it makes just as much sense.
Guys with homemade coal stoves have made better weapons. It’s not about the tools, it’s about how you use them. Even with what he had the kid should’ve been able to make a sword that didn’t snap it half.
@@dearthofdoohickeys4703 better equipment is allways a plus. especially when heat treating the blade, a big furnace can heat it equally everywhere. i guess this is why his blade snapped, he couldnt heat treat it properly with his equipment.
To all you who think the older guy just cut out a piece of metal.
He didn’t. Watch the full episode before you jump to conclusions.
Hand hammering that beast from 5160 spring steel had to be brutal! I'm surprised that boy's arm wasn't in a sling for the testing!
You did good kid,now it's time to shine, don't ever put another blade out there, that's not up to YOUR 💯 PERCENT,and you will do great things in life...
The old guy cheated, he simply took a sheet of metal and drawed a blade and sharpened it. The young guy deserve the win in my oppinion.
The older guy was using modern technology to “forge” his sword.
Love the fact that the grandpa cuts his blade out, puts an edge and handle on it and wins 10k while the kid tries his best with normal forging, fixes the crack, still meets parameters and all he gets is "good effort".
Grandpa prolly worked hard all his life to make it there, don’t complain, the younger guy still has his whole life ahead of him, he’ll learn and grow and probably be better than grandpa at his age

Your blade, sir, will *K E E L*
It's great to see people finding interest in forging through this series, however, anyone wishing to learn this trade would be well advised NOT to follow what you are seeing on Forged in Fire as an accurate representation of proper forging procedures and practices. Having spent over 40 years as a trained Professional Smith ( retired), It's difficult for me to watch this show without noticing some serious errors in procedures that are fundamental to a properly forged piece of work. e.g no attention is given to stress relief, post forging, by way of normalizing and annealing, which should be done prior to a quench; this as well as over-heating carbon steels, uneven forging techniques leads to warping and cracking which we see often on the show. Omitting critical practices will only lead to immediate or eventual failures in a blade, which can lead to a serious injury. A good piece of reference material is an old book called " The Complete Bladesmith' by Jim Hrsoulas~Still available.
@Dean McAndrew, you're very welcome Dean, any time! I still operate a forge from time to time, (coal), which by the way, is superior to propane in a number of ways, if you know how to use it properly, and not those dinky coal forges I've seen on the show. I built forged sculptures, and gates weighing over a ton, all with a coal forge and a large power-hammer, the one on the show is a toy by comparison. Here's a good example of what I was talking about earlier...In the 70s I would recondition jackhammer bits, sometimes up to 80 in a day, My rate of failure was typically 3 in 80. Another shop in the area was doing similar and was experiencing many failures. They ask me for an opinion and it was clear that after forging they were going straight to a quench to save time and they were breaking at the point in the bar, just above where the forging took place, resulting in natural stress point. The same holds true for forging any high carbon products, we also made a lot of stone tools.
As well, you have to know the carbon content, and basic makeup of high carbons in order to know the heat tolerance. E.g, O1, popular tool steel will not tolerate forging above a bright red heat, and in the case of a knife should be evenly forged, not beat to death!
Hamming below a certain heat will also result in a failure. Most high carbon steels are subject to this, so one must be careful and know your steels. 5160 ( spring steel) is a very forgiving mid-range steel that you can go a little higher, but better be careful with the higher end stuff like O1, Wi, W2, and others. O1 is oil-hardened steel, The (W series) is high-end water hardened steel, that in most cases is better hardened in Oil unless you really know what you're doing. Water steels can be hardened in Oil , while Oil steels can only be hardened in Oil. Cheers:)
It's a game show where contestants compete for a prize, not a documentary. But I suspect there are lots of emergency rooms that have seen people with burns, cuts, and smashed fingers using what they "learned" on this show.
@@proliance No argument there, however, when dealing with things that can injure you or someone else, it's best to be as accurate and as responsible as possible.
@@proliance, No argument, its a game show. However, when you're dealing with things that can hurt you or someone close by, I don't think it's a stretch to employ as much accuracy and responsibility as possible under the conditions. I've seen what it looks like when someone did it wrong and ended up with one eye at the end of the day. I get your point, but the issues run deeper, I'm afraid.
I can appreciate that. I have yet to find a CZcams channel that really goes into the chemistry and physics of forging in any detail. I don't think people are coming here to really learn about the craft though. They are in love with the finished product, more than the painstaking process of producing it right. You have to know your stuff, and invest in the right stock steels to produce anything decent in 4 days. For example, it's only having to investigate using steel wire in jewellery that I discovered the vast range and different characteristics of the steels made. So I salute your lifetime of knowledge and skills you acquired throughout your career. Thank you for your insight.

Much respect it’s really unfair with the equipment
Rule of thumb I've learned from cases like this: If there's even a single crack you CAN see, there's always more that you CAN'T see. A band-aid on a small laceration won't help with the internal bleeding in other areas. Don't try to save a blade that has a visible crack, because it's the ones you didn't see and didn't expect that will ruin you.
