    I just got my first Fox back in July (an '89 GT vert). The way Andrew's idles when you first adjusted it on the throttle body at 2:26 is exactly what mine does right now, especially during coldstarts (and that's AFTER it spends about two minutes bucking like it wants to shut off). All of this information is really helpful!

    Thanks for this video. I just bought a 1990 SSP in Colorado and drove it home to Atlanta. Thing bucked hard when just trying to stay at a steady speed, I always had to accelerate or decelerate for it run "smooth". Also, idles at 500 when hot (has an unknown aftermarket cam). Found two massive vacuum leaks in the lower intake gaskets. Going to change those, then follow your steps in this video. Your content has been gold to me since I've never owned a Foxbody before.

    EEC3. The dealer had a diagnostic machine called the SBDS. It was the size of an arcade game, like the one you put quarters in. The veteran taught me exactly the same things, back in the late 90's, a DVOM, and dial back timing light.
    .51 to .99 was acceptable tps voltage. Occasionally a dead spot in egr valve position sensor would cause an errant high idle too, we would nick a little off the sensor pintle on the grinder and let it relearn.

    When doing a base idle reset you really need to unplug the tps, iac and spout connector. Set the idle screw to where the engine is barely idling around 400-500 rpm. Then plug everything back in. The reason you need to unplug everything is because all of those things will try to correct the idle as you turn the idle screw off they are plugged in.

Car is running good but with throttle at a steady spot, it starts bucking some unless rpm's/throttle trending up or down with pedal. Was going to check plugs and fuel pressure. No check light now after sending computer off and fixing few other items related to codes.

  • @dennislacy5105
    @dennislacy5105 Pƙed 2 lety +2

    It’s a very important point that with an aftermarket cam the idle speed must be raised above factory. How much is necessary will depend on how aggressive the cam is. Years ago my best friend and I straightened out the idle on countless modified Mustangs that we met around town. The common denominator was that the owner/builder was trying to idle the engine too low and they had the usual surging idle. Up and down, up and down. What few people realize is that when you try to idle a more aggressive camshaft too low is that it creates “intake reversion” which is a reverse pulse through the intake tract all the way out to the air filter. This is because more aggressive cams have more valve overlap, the amount of time both valves are open at the same time as the exhaust stroke is ending and the intake stroke is simultaneously beginning. Imagine a situation where your MAF is reading incoming air one moment then suddenly not the next moment like someone turning a light switch on and off rapidly and continuously. So one moment the computer is seeing air flow from the MAF then it’s not. The computers reaction is to raise and lower the ignition timing to match and that is where you get the surging idle. Sometimes the surging is consistent and other times it’s a runaway situation where the difference between high and low grows wider and wider to the point where the low is so low the engine stalls. If you put a timing light on while the surging is happening you can watch it shoot up and down, up and down, up and down. All these people would put those goofy adjustable spacers under the IAC when the surging idle has nothing to do with the IAC. It’s all because the ignition timing is going advance then retard because of intake reversion. You have to increase the idle speed enough to get passed the reversion to where you’re getting a consistent, continuous intake reading from the MAF and then like magic the engine will idle steadily. We typically found 850-950rpm to be the happy range depending on the cam used. All these people thought we were magicians when in reality we just understood how a more aggressive cam changes the dynamics of an engine. Intake reversion can also play hell with idle stability on carbureted engines.

I had no difference in rpm`s when unplugging / plugging the IAC. It idles good around 750-800, timing 12-13 and TPS 0,98. But if i rev it and let go of gas it stalls, wont even surge. brew, what socket size are you using on the throttle body screw? im pretty sure my screw is either broken or somewhat different. have never been able to mess with it because it doesn't look like an actual screw, just the threads basically. I got a bcam so its hard enough to make it idle without warming it up a little

    My biggest issues is now that I've done the Idle Reset, The Spout doesn't seem to do anything. When I tune the car to 12-14Âș it runs just ok. I noticed my Timing does not move with or without the spout connected. RPMS doe not move when it's connected or removed. I've tried a jump wire and checked volts on the spout and everything seem to work. Timing does not move with or without spout. Help. đŸ™đŸŒ

    You should never touch the screw on the throtalbody!!! Now its really messed up. Throtalbodys are adjusted on light table and now you go turn it so if u set it at 98 tps its going to be off because u turned the screw and of course its idle is to fast.. recalibrate lol... ok

      Typically timing or throttle adjustment is what I’ve seen cause surging over the years. But other factors could also be causing issues as well. Bad sensors or IAC motor

      If i adjust the idle screw will it be idling way high? When i manually open the throttle I see it change accordingly... the preload you speak of putting on the TPS, is it a very small amount?

    • @BREW2LFOXBODY
      @BREW2LFOXBODY  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Unplug the iac and adjust the throttle so that it idles around 600-700 or so. Then switch the car off, plug in the iac again and start the car back up. You should be about right there.

    • @BREW2LFOXBODY
      @BREW2LFOXBODY  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      It’s going to want to idle around 850 to 900 more than likely. So set your idle around 700-750 with the iac unplugged and you should be good. Then just make sure the tps is between.5 and 1 volt
