  • Here's a possible solution if you noticed the fans on your early Xbox One X going berserk and general console instability (especially the Scorpio Editions). My Xbox One X would crash and thermally shutdown constantly in games like Fallout 76, and this upgrade has fixed all of those issues.

    I’m going to have to embark on this journey with my Xbox one X as it is a late 2017 model and experiences overheating issues similar to the ones that you have experienced. I’ve never conducted any sort of repair like this before so please wish me luck as I’m very nervous going into this, regardless your video has given me confidence and I must say thank you for your hard work.

      Did you remember to plug the fan back in during reassembly? I forgot to do that initially. If that's working, you might take it apart again and make sure the compound is spreading and sealing evenly.

    Not sure if it helps anyone doing this in the future, but......If your worried about how much thermal paste to put on:
    Put a pea/bb size drop on the chip
    Keep the board elevated, place the heat sink on the board so it rest on the chip using just the weight of the heat sink
    Take the heat sink back off
    Use a q-tip to remove excess paste around the sides of the chip
    Put the heat sink back on and secure with the clamp
    Another tip. You’ll notice the thermal pads might have indents on the corners instead of evenly spaced because they aren’t centered over the components.
    Take the pads off the heat sink and place them centered on the components before you place the heat sink back on and secure with the clamp

    what would be the harm in using a hole saw and cutting a hole in he bottom of the xbox where the squirrel cage fan intake is (that you can see @ 2:40 in this video) to get direct access to outside air for cooling the heatsink? I would elevate the console about 1 inch higher after this to help prevent lots of dust getting in there.

    • @fortnerindustries
      @fortnerindustries  Před 4 lety +1

      Based off of my testing, airflow isn't the real issue, poor heat conduction from the processor through the heat sink is.
      Sure, you could compensate for poor conduction to a certain extent by increasing the convection throughout the chassis, but the fact of the matter is that the copper heatsink wasn't properly transferring the processor heat in the first place. Extra airflow would just cool the heatsink that isn't heating up much to begin with.
      With the thermal compound properly applied, the fan speeds have been FAR lower, meaning the heatsink is now doing its job.

    • @tomburnham6640
      @tomburnham6640 Před 4 lety

      Well the key thing to note is that although it is an intake, it's not the main intake per se. The main intake is the other side, you'll notice the fan is raised from the board by half an inch to let the air in, also the fan hole is much bigger that side. The air comes in the system through the vents at the sides of the console, through the gap between the board and the fan and out through the heat sink at the back. There is a slight gap between the plastic and the side of the fan you are referring to, but that is just to allow a balance of air to help it spin, not to intake the air.
      Cutting a hole will help slightly but the gains aren't worth making a mess.

      @@Angultra The best thing with an internal SSD is the startup. My X starts up and are ready to go within 40 seconds. It respons instantly nomatter if your in the store section or your library. Its way snappier than loading the OS from a hardrive that constantly searches for info as you do something. While the SSD swipes the info instantly making the interface fluid. And the games downloads faster aswell and the SSD consumes less power and gives off no heat wharsoever compared to an 5400rpm drive thats constantly spinning and getting warm. If you realy want a snappy Xbox that boots up almost double as fast with a quick interface then replace the HDD aswell. You wont regret it :)

      @@thepicard83 I thought about it but decided against it, and I already have a T5 external. As long as you leave it in quick boot mode then it's quick to start up, and interface lag and noise is not noticeable to me. I can understand though if you want to save power and cold boot each time, then SSD would be dramatic. The benchmarks show actual game loading times to be almost identical with internal / external SSD so I'd be paying $100+ for just a faster interface; not in the budget right now.

Its normally the ones who are too scared or know nothing technical who make it up and spread it to convince others not to do it, saying something about Microsoft looking at the hardware ID and giving a console ban, biggest load of bollocks iv ever read. Also you don't have to clone your original drive, there are scripts you can download which will format and partition a drive ready for the Xbox.
      An SSD gives you no competitive advantage over others, it just allows the Motherboard to load files into the RAM faster, making for reduced loading times. Also write speeds are improved so copying/downloading games should also be faster.
