    About This Video: This Xbox One X was sent to me by a viewer to see if there is anything I can do with it. I found it to be in pretty bad shape...including a bent motherboard, broken fan and missing parts. After the video was filmed I also found that the hard drive was faulty. Watch along as I figure out what to do with this console.

    Hey Steve, Thanks for the mention!! I'm so relieved that you were able to use some of the parts to get another one running again.
    I just wanted to clarify to everyone in the comments what happened to this thing because many of you are really close lol.
    My coworker brought this in one day and said that he got angry at his son for being glued to the console and not listening to him, ripped it off the TV stand and threw it onto the ground a few times. He felt bad and wanted to try to recover the game that was inside per his son's request but unfortunately made things even worse as you can see in the video. He got the game out, and when you hear what it was, you will all cringe because it doesn't cost more than $8 these days. Call of duty World at War.
    He has since bought his son another Xbox One X and is hopefully taking some anger management classes lol.

    I wish Microsoft would stop marrying the drives (optical or hard drive) to the motherboards. It's not really the most effective antipiracy and just creates more hassle for end users.

      I wish they would as well...Sony too.

    • @halofreak1990
      @halofreak1990 Před 5 lety +3

      Why? You're not supposed to replace those drives, anyway. Otherwise MS, Sony or whoever else would simply offer replacement drives. Also, it's not just anti-piracy, but also anti-cheat. Being able to put custom stuff on the Hard Drive is an easy way to give yourself an unfair advantage in games, and seeing how many people already cheat by connecting mice and keyboards to their consoles, I can easily see where they're coming from.

    • @JordanP6885
      @JordanP6885 Před 4 lety +4

      @@halofreak1990 lmao you don't know what you're talking about. First of all you can't cheat by being able to replace the hard drive with a different one. You can't run any code you want without it being signed by Microsofts private key. You would need some kind of mod like the RGH or JTAG mod on the old 360 that gives you hyper visor permissions to run unsigned code or mods that are developed by other people. You can actually clone hard drives right now to make the xbox think the new hard drive you put in is the original which a lot of people are doing by replacing the stock one with an SSD for faster load times.
      The disc drive pairing also does nothing either for antipiracy. The xbox checks against any modified firmware the drive might have and also does security checks on the discs. One more thing mouse and keyboard isn't cheating. Its actually more difficult to learn how to use but once you know how you can be much more accurate.

    • @halofreak1990
      @halofreak1990 Před 4 lety

      @@JordanP6885"First of all you can't cheat by being able to replace the hard drive with a different one."
      Sounds like _you're_ the one who doesn't know anything. Being able to replace the hard drive with another literally opens the console up for cheating, because who can guarantee the files on the disk have not been tampered with? Once you have access to any game data, whether that's save files or the game's assets, the game is compromised.
      "You can actually clone hard drives right now to make the xbox think the new hard drive you put in is the original which a lot of people are doing by replacing the stock one with an SSD for faster load times."
      Then the hard drive is not actually married to the console, as was the case with the OG Xbox, where you could not swap the hard drive by simple cloning, and had to update the EEPROM with the new hard drive's data and lock the new hard drive using the updated EEPROM key.
      "The disc drive pairing also does nothing either for antipiracy. The xbox checks against any modified firmware the drive might have and also does security checks on the discs."
      Wrong. It's the disc drive firmware that does the security checks on the discs, which is why you can run backups by flashing modified firmware onto the disc drive. You are right about the console checking the firmware (and only after that was patched), but the rest is nonsense.
      "One more thing mouse and keyboard isn't cheating."
      Cheating is defined as "using various methods to create an advantage or disadvantage beyond normal gameplay". Guess what using a Mouse and Keyboard on a console is...
      Please try and inform yourself of how the Xbox actually functions, and the definitions of the words you're using before talking smack.

    • @JordanP6885
      @JordanP6885 Před 4 lety +3

      @@halofreak1990 Lmao nice try at a rebuttal. Your first counter argument is still completely wrong. People have access to save files and the games assets already but they still can't modify the game because YOU CAN'T RUN UNSIGNED CODE ON THE XBOX ONE. If YOU actually knew anything about how it operates you'd know this. The Xbox One runs games and apps almost like they're their own OS which is why it's so difficult to modify even you somehow got hypervisor access. Love how you conveniently skipped my statement on that.
      Your second counter argument is also wrong. Just because you can clone another hard drive to work in the Xbox One doesn't mean its not married to the motherboard. You can't just swap in a hard drive or SSD and have it work. You need to clone the original exactly as it is to get the information off it and on to the new one. I mean I don't understand how you screwed that up.
      Your 3rd counter argument is again wrong. The Xbox itself checks against modified firmware on the disc drive so if you modified the disc drive to run back ups and tell the Xbox that what you inserted is a legit disc when it's not you'll get banned, probably instantly. Microsoft can easily put out the firmware for the disc drive to allow you to flash it to any compatible drive incase the original breaks. This wouldn't open the door to piracy. It's still the same firmware doing the same checks.
      Don't tell me I don't know how the Xbox operates when obviously I have enough knowledge to know about modifying the original 360 and how YOU CAN'T CHEAT ON THE XBOX ONE WITHOUT HYPERVISOR ACCESS. I've modified plenty of Xbox 360s, both RGH and JTAG method to know what I'm talking about. It simply swapping the hard drive was enough to open the door for cheating then there would me mods for games everywhere. Newsflash there isn't.
      One more thing, your comment on mouse and keyboard being cheating is incredibly stupid. If you go by the definition then having a 4K TV with high refresh rates would be considered cheating. You have higher resolutions and frame rates allowing you to see better in FPS games therefore giving you advantage. Would you really call having a better TV cheating? No just like having an input device ie. A mouse and keyboard, that you're more comfortable with isn't cheating. ANYONE can pick up a mouse and keyboard and plug it into their xbox and learn how to use it. Just because some people don't want to or prefer a controller doesn't mean its cheating.
      I'll give you a C grading because you gave a valiant effort and had a decent argument but you obviously don't understand what is needed to actually install "cheats" or modifications on the Xbox One.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I've found with small BGA chips this method works fine. I usually try to make sure that there's about the same amount of solder on each of the pads. I've used this method with larger chips....the SCEI chip on a PS4 Slim and it worked well. I did have to add some solder to some of the pads on that chip to make sure they were all a similar size though. It's definitely not the best method for larger chips and it wouldn't work on anything large like the APU but for the smaller ones it works fine.

    I love seeing dead consoles being brought back to life! I have an original Xbox that is a mix of two prior Xboxes, and I also have a 360 that is a Frankenstein of 3 separate 360's that I had over the years! I am still on my original OG Xbone! Lol

    Can't you plug in the power supply and then check voltage on the two prongs that plug into the motherboard instead of going through the whole process?

    Isn't the Arctic Silver 5 compound conductive to some extent? If I didn't remember it wrong, they noticed customers about this issue in their manual. So can it cause problems if it contacts the small components near the die?

    Tronics, I enjoy your videos, they inspired me to pick up a broken one(S model) and I'm trying to repair it. It does not want to play any game. I have swapped laser mechanism, replaced hard drive and it won't play. Tried a digital game as well, the same thing happens every time. Game wants to start(shows splash screen) but then goes back to the dashboard. Everything else works great, Bluray movie plays well. The only other "bad" thing is with it, that the startup green screen is corrupted(bad graphics chip corrupted, tiny colorful dots and square white blocks show, on top of the splash screen). Nobody seems to be able to help me, I have tried different forums as well, even ifixit. I would appreciate any help, that you could offer.

      1) Have you tried resetting the console to factory settings...deleting everything off of it? Also, be sure it's fully updated.
      2) As far as the graphics problem I'd guess that it's either a faulty HDMI port or HDMI chip on the motherboard.
      Good luck and let me know how it goes!

      @@Tronicsfix I have already replaced the hard drive, with the latest OSU1 on it. I'm way past of the basic resets. It is hard to believe, that the HDMI has any problems, since I have just watched a Bluray movie and it was everything OK. The Xbox logo, must be something internal to the Xbox, firmware, or nand flash. I need some advanced help here.

When I moved it in vertical, this issue doesn't happen. What it could be? 2 months ago, a technic changed the thermal paste and fews day ago I replaced the thermal pads.

  • @corvidconfidential8826

    Hey TronicsFix, hopefully you see this and could help me.
    My xbox one x just broke and i have no idea why, but i have a theory that i wonder if you agree with.
    Its almost 100% the HDD going out, it was gradual and wont boot up even after fac resets. I was wondering if you think i mightve accidentally gradually magnetized it using my tablet case. (It has a small magnet on the base for locking it closed)
    I keep my xbox in front of me and sometimes sit my tablet w/magnetic latch against the xbox on the top of the right side of the case, and i think its right on top of the HDD. Could that tiny weak magnet fry the HDD over the course of a year?
    It started lagging menus, freezing when i brought up messages, and stopping installs. Then i would get the occasional error startup, but it would fix with a reset. When that stopped working, a fac reset worked. (I thought it was a software issue)
    After a week, it error screened again and a fac reset didnt work. Had to buy a new one....rip 3 months etsy store profits..
    Sorry for the wall of text, but your imput would ease my mind regarding my new one. Regardless of that tho, im keeping the nearest magnet 3 rooms away from my new xbox
