🔥 Stop your Xbox One X from Overheating - Full strip down and Thermal Paste Instructions
Vložit
- čas přidán 9. 07. 2019
- Is your Xbox One X sounding noisy, do your fans seem to be running all the time or constantly seeking and going up and down, then it's possible that your thermal paste on the GPU inside your Xbox One X has dried out or the thermal paste when being manufactured has not been placed in the right location for the heat sink to transfer heat correctly.
This video will show you how to strip down your Xbox One X - so I start with the full tear down. Then how to remove the heat sink from your Xbox One X GPU.
How and what to clean the GPU and Heatsink with, which new thermal paste to use on your Xbox One X.
I also show the correct measurements for the Thermal Pad thickness on your Xbox One X heat sink so you can source them before you start.
If your Xbox is noisy and its the cooling fans are making the noise you will be amazed the difference this refurbishment can make to the heat dissipation for the Xbox One X GPU, and the difference in noise when you test afterward.

Just wanted to say that I just replaced the thermal compound on my Xbox One X using your guide. It took me about an hour and a half as a complete novice and I was trying to be really careful. Your guide was clear and informative and I was able to complete the repair with little problem. My Xbox is now as quiet as it was on the day I purchased it back in December was 2017. Thank you very much!
Thanks Andrew - I’m really glad it helped, a hour and a half is great it’s definitely better to take your time with stuff like this as one slip up could be the end for your Xbox one x!
Yeah this was very helpful
someone game me a broken xbox i did this to it and it kind of works better but i ordered a cheap psu for it and it shuts off after the psu gets warm no heat notification after i think it may be the cheap ebay psu
My xbox sounded like a fighter jet. now its quiet and no longer shutting down. Thank you.
This became a problem for me when playing RDR2. I could only play for 20 minutes before the console would just shut down. This totally fixed my issues saving me hours of lost play time. Thank you so much!
Thanks - Glad it helped.
Same for me minus the shutdowns. System is audibly loud, I’m getting around to doing this myself, when I decide to upgrade the HDD to a larger SSD
THE EXACT SAME THING FOR ME PLS TELL HOW TO FIX!?
This helped fixed my overheating issue, which was causing shutdowns and fan noise. Thanks so much!
Thank you for your video- I was having occasional shut-downs from "overheating" even though it's got TONS of ventilation in an open air environment, and was even in my basement (coolest part of my house.) I found your video, disassembled and applied new thermal paste, and the whole process went smoothly! You weren't exaggerating when you displayed how much quieter it is. WOW! The most difficult part for me was getting the top cover BACK on, the very final step.. but after 20 minutes of struggling I finally got it. Again- thank you for your video, very helpful.
Hey - Thanks for posting a reply yeah it really does make a massive difference in making the Xbox one x quieter. I’m glad it helped.
I was skeptical but wow the difference is impressive after I followed your step by step tutorial. Now it’s finally quiet and i can enjoy playing without disturbing at night. So THANK YOU A LOT
Hey Thanks Axel - Yeah I get it, it’s hard to believe when someone (you don’t know) says this really helps and it’s a risk to put your faith in a video. But I honestly wouldn’t post anything on any of my channels that wasn’t truthful and (hopefully) helpful. Glad it helped.
Damn! It's amazing how much quieter it is. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for measuring and mentioning the size of the thermal pads.
SomeRandomGuy Hey - No problem, I thought the thickness of the pads would be important to people wanting to order the parts before starting the repair.
CraftyDoctor where is the best place to order thermal paste/pads? I’m looking to do this to my XboxOneX while I open it up to repair it after it fell off a shelf and seems to have a broken piece inside that sounds like plastic rattling.
Just spent all week looking for thermal pad thickness on the Xbox One X..... ended up buying 1 & 2mm as I could find an answer till now. Great video as I’m just staring to replace the heatsink paste on mine as it is sounding like a PS4 jet engine 👍
Woah nice name
Mr hunt
Thanks for this video. Just stripped down my Day One Scorpio using this guide. Cleaned up, new paste applied and now quiet as a mouse!!
Thanks Trevor - Yes the Scorpio edition models seem to be effected the most.
Just got to the bit in the tutorial where you mentioned the copper edges, mine is exactly the same, also, mine had way more dust, cant believe how clean yours is :)
This video was a major help. Thing is running again quiet as hell like it's brand new. Even on graphics intensive games, plus online, when the fan kicks on its hardly noticeable like before. Big thanks.
Just completed my take apart and reapplication of paste. All seems to be good so far, thanks for the vid. Couldn't have completed this without it. 👍
Thanks Dudge glad it helped
Thanks man,I watched a couple other videos but those videos didn't show me what you were doing. Saved me a couple hundred dollars 💸. Appreciate you alot 🙏 💯
Glad I could help
Thank you. Replacing the thermal paste has helped mine. Way quieter and I am not having crashing issues. Board looked the same around edges as well.
Hey that’s great - Thanks for letting me know about the board, I too have repaired several Scorpio editions now and all of them look the same I’m wondering if Microsoft purposely designed it that way.
Great explanation and walk-through. Much appreciated.
A huge thanks from me, this worked an absolute treat. I've had Odyssey running for the past hour - no more wind tunnel!
Great video, sorted out my modern warfare woes. My paste hadn't dried out as such but was smeared over everything under the heatsink including the silver border
This is probably the best video guide I've seen. I plan to reapply thermal paste as my X is REALLY noisey when playing Red Dead 2 even with headphones on! A project to do do when I am back from my holidays. I shall be back if I have any questions or concerns.
Thanks Alex.
thank you just took mine apart cleaned re thermal pasted and now playing again great video !
Great tutorial, my Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition started getting loud with Red Dead. NBA 2K20 was causing the console to shut down due to overheating, and this is with three PC fans helping airflow in and out.
Used this tutorial to the letter, added thermal paste after cleaning up GPU and fan blades with a cotton bud. Now it is quiet with all my demanding games.
It work perfectly fine for me ! Thank you very much for this tutorial ! My motherboard was exactly like yours in the borders btw :) !
Thanks Alejandro - yes it really is amazing the difference this makes. It’s interesting about the board I wonder if Microsoft designed it that way or if it’s a fault?
CraftyDoctor From the looks of it it’s just regular patina forming on the copper. Nothing to worry about.
This totally works my scorpio kept shutting down when playing red dead 2,metro exodus and borderlands 3 after renewed thermal paste the fan was hardly spinning up highly recommend doing this
Same issue with my scorpio modern warfare dryer up all the thermal paste, put some more on and fixed it perfect, I think the scorpio was unfinished or something my first one broke they seem to break easily
Same here! Reapplying the paste fixed it!
Same haha, Modern warfare... A quick
Definitely was the issue with my Xbox One X as well. Was extremely loud when playing Red Dead Redemption 2 at 4k.
Took apart and cleaned everything. Then replaced the thermal paste with Arctic Silver MX-4 ....
Booted up RDR2 and played for 30 mins... The Console now sounds as it should.
Thanks for the video, buddy!
@@alternatetakes345 i did the same thing but It is still noisy but working
thanks mate your a diamond. bloody thing kept over heating, the step by step was spot on.
cheers......
Thanks for this video, I have just cleaned the dust out of my old One X as my son now has it. I sounded like a jet engine as soon as you turned it on and would repeatedly turn itself off due to over heating. I didn't trust myself to do the thermal paste, but a good clean and it's as good as new.
I fixed mine today, fan was going on a jet plane levels for couple of weeks and within the last two-three days Xbox kept shutting down just after couple minutes, stripped it down thanks to this video and applied the thermal paste (mine was completely dried - i could basically see the chip :D) assembled it back and everything works like a charm, thanks!
and now just after 5 months it's overheating again lol... i wonder if Arctic MX-4 is a crap thermal paste or my application of the paste wasn't proper
Thanks very much for this guide. Purchased a Xbox one X which the seller has advised very noisy but still working. Full of dust which I cleaned out but think the main issue was the bad dried out contact between heat sink and GPU. Runs pretty much silent now!!!.. What a transformation.
You put new paste on? I've got really noisy Xbox One X, would you recommend?
@@Moledmc Hi, I can certainly recommend the process detailed. It does take sometime as want to be careful but not too difficult. Make sure you have some product to clean the old paste off.
I followed this guide and was easy to take apart and used all the materials that was recommended and credit where credit is due my Scorpio is like brand new good video and now I have a silent faster running machine 👍🏼
Thank you 🤘🏼
Thanks Daniel - Glad it helped, it really does make a massive difference for us that have the noisy Xbox One X’s (especially the Scorpio edition)
Thank you so much for doing this. We did this yesterday and my Xbox One X Scorpio works so much better and is not overheating anymore! The fan runs so much quieter now when I’m in Call of Duty MW! Thanks again
Great - Thanks Lucas glad it helped.
Thank you for this. I did this to my One X and I have played battlefield for 3 hours and haven't heard the fan once. Usually when I started up battlefield the fan would kick on high speed immediately. I always thought that was normal because it's a 4k game. I really cannot believe the difference this made for my system. It's running better than ever. Thank you so much! 😁 Incredible
Thanks Jared, yeah when I first played with my day one release (Scorpio) it was exactly the same, if the repair is done correctly and before the Xbox one x damages itself to much then the results are great.
What a legend! My xbox has been so loud for the last couple of weeks and this worked a charm! So quite now playing the same game as before. Thank you very much!
Tip for people putting it back together:
*Take the connections out of the bluray player and put them in before you do the power supply makes it alot easier and no fidgeting.
*Watch the harddrive when you go to turn it back the other way it can slip back and when you go to put the screws in they may not reach! I put one screw in before turning it over and it was easy!
Thanks for the great video. Stripped down my kids Xbox One X, full of dust and noticed the corrosion around the circuit board as you found. The thermal paste applied in the factory was spread out all over the periphery of the CPU and no doubt was not doing anything. The console wasn’t labelled as a Scorpio edition but I noticed a scorpion logo on the PCB. It was new in December 2017 so I guess it was one of the early ones. As others have noted , reassembly was a bit fiddly, and I guess reassembly instructions on your video would have been great, but was able to figure it out by running the video again. We now have a silently running machine again! Cheers 👍😊
Thanks for this. I was extremely surprised on how well it worked! Quiet as a mouse now and no more crashes on Apex.
Great - Yeah I think Apex has been a lot worse lately compared to how stable it was at first.
This fixed my loud fan issues on Modern Warfare. Thank you so much.
Same
My Xbox had the same issue, but for a while I thought it was the power supply. I came across this video and I decide to go for it. I bought a tool kit from Amazon and got the Mx- 5 thermal compound, I couldn’t find the Wd-40 you used so I went and got a cheaper one from Micro center. Watching step by step, and man my Xbox was Filthy! The dust had turn black. Cleaned it inside out and put it back together. It was a challenge but I learned a lot about my console. I’m glad I came across this video Thank you 👍🏽
Thanks Andy - Glad it helped
Brilliant tutorial, after putting mine back together I switched it on and thought "wow that is so much quieter", it wasn't until my Xbox turned itself off that I realised I hadn't plugged the fan back back in 😂. No wondered it sounded so quiet. Plugged the fan back in and all is fine now.
HaHa 😂 that will definitely make it quite not having the fan connected. Hopefully it’s still a lot quieter now the fan is connected.
Thanks man! Mine always sounded like a jet taking off when playing games, and started to overheat and crash frequently. Now its back to running quietly.
Great guide thanks, did this job on my overheating Scorpio on Sunday and it's been running beautifully since. A friend did advise me to apply the paste carefully in a thin coat spread across the whole of the chip rather than dotting it in the middle and squeezing together, to ensure the coverage is total. Thanks again.
Thanks Ben, yeah it really makes a difference to the Xbox One X chip, I have done several now and both run a lot quieter (and cooler) after re-applying the thermal paste.
Should I send mine back for a exchange if it’s pretty loud ? It’s not even game , just games like call of duty
The CraftDoctor is correct in applying a single blob of thermal paste large enough to spread out across the chip. It ensures NO AIR gaps creep in. Spreading or using multiple dots of thermal paste (as seen in cheap Chinese knock offs etc) creates air gaps in the paste which leads to HOT Spots and therefore can severely damage / fry the CPU / GPU whatever and hence is very bad practice.
Great breakdown and video Crafty! Cheers.
Oh my gosh it worked!!!!! Mine was a mess in there!! Missing a pad and paste was a mess. Thank you so much for this!!
Great Rachel - Glad it helped.
Hi Crafty, nice post! Just thought I'd mention that the crumbling effect you mention is copper oxide, this occurs when electronics are exposed to electrolytes found in water. I suspect your heatsink's water chamber to the source of all this corrosion.
Yes this is exactly what happened. At 9:00 you can even see how it leaked out of the pinch point and also broke the thermal paste down a bit. Surprised he didn't notice but luckily copper is a good enough heat conductor so it will still function. But unfortunately it will never run as quietly as it should.
Here we go again thanks for the great video. I'm a rrod veteran and I was hoping I would never have to pull an Xbox apart again. My Scorpio edition also gets very loud at the drop of a hat guessing I have no choice but to do this soon. Thanks for your knowledge and beginner friendly advice it's a nightmare to even think one would have do pull apart their baby
Thank you for uploading this video, helped me a lot to reapply the thermal paste of my Xbox One X *ThumbsUp* best regards from Germany
Thanks thundeman glad it helped
Thanks for the great video, I had intermittent issues of my One X saying it had overheated after about 20 minutes of playtime and changing the thermal paste fixed it!
Glad it helped
What a great video… very clear…. Glad I found this, before I took a big hammer to mine… time for the strip down, which I did, it’s very easy with this guide. Excellent work my friend
Hi just wanna give u a shout out. Thnx for the video it helped me from A to Z. Keep up the great work
Thanks for the video, this was an amazing help and saved me quite a bit of money.
Thanks for watching Daniel - I’m glad it helped.
My XBox sounded like a Harrier Jump Jet taking off. Switching itself off after about two minutes of gameplay. I followed your tutorial and found pretty much what your video said I would. My copper edges were all worn as well. Now it doesn't make any noise at all! So thanks! I did have some trouble with the hard drive screws as it dropped a few mm when I tried to reassemble. Also getting the final lid on took forever!
Thanks glad it helped
Thank you very much for the professional explanation in the video how to disassemble and assemble the Xbox one x.
you solved my problem of warming I was exhausted with thermal mx-4.
The xbox working fine and very Quiet
before The fan worked hard and the Xbox was turned off after it warmed up. Now it is quiet thanks to you and I also recommend the thermal material mx4
Appreciate the great video. Thank you! My board looked like yours around the edges after 2 years. Excessive fan operation/over heating is why I opened it up to apply new thermal paste. Running quieter so far, hope it lasts.
Thanks Bob - Should be all good, the Xbox I repair in the video is my personal Xbox and is used regularly and is still running quite.
Experienced my first overheat last week. Glad I saw this. Going to try this next weekend when stuff comes in. Thanks for sharing about the thermal paste drying out. You would think they would use quality stuff for the price you pay for the console.
Finally got around to cleaning it. Thanks so much for this video! Xbox is running a lot more quiet and no overheating yet. Board looked like yours as well.
Glad it worked out for you. They use a thermal paste that is sprayed on the heatsink by a robot during manufacturing so that the people at the assembly line can not mess this up. Downside is that such thermal paste is less conductive and dries out much faster. The same is found on cheap cpu coolers for PC.
It's a commercial product. That means everything in it was built by the lowest bidder. Its literal market value is probably $300 less than whatever the shelf price says.
Did this to my first gen xbox one today lol, sounded like a jet engine winding up until today. Now it's quiet and stays fairly cool.
Just followed this to repaste mine with AS5. Spot on guide from start to finish. The only issue I had was a another smaller piece of the metal that's insulated appeared from nowhere (similar to the piece that's removed from above the ports after the power supply comes out). It turns out it just lives further along on top of the other ports fortunately.
Now my one X is so quiet I might need to check I plugged the fan back into the motherboard 😂
Great video tutorial, Ive ordered the supplies you've reccomended for my xbox one x that is currently out of action. I also ordered an IC graphite cooling pad for a second one x i own, just to compare. I'll let you know results when complete. Thanks mate
Thanks Frank - Yeah I’ve completed several of these now and all are much much better, but yeah let me know how you get on.
Thank you so much. I was having mad fan action to the point that every time i loaded ANY game it went nuts!! Found the paste almost rock hard - Now nothing but a very quiet hum. Great vid - Great guide. How long lasting is going to be curious
Thanks to your tutorial my Xbox One X now whispers softly in my ear rather than screaming at me like a banshee as I game. 👍🏻
Just like to say what a superb video explaining every step. Well Done
Thanks Len appreciated
Thanks for the vid. MS really flubbed the original thermal paste, way too much spilling all over the chip.
All the screws were either T10 or T8 for reference. Did mine as a preventative measure to make sure it lasts for years to come!
I think some of them are actually T9 but those bits are very uncommon and a T8 still fits
Just to note, the pads should be 1.5mm rather than 2mm. That extra 0.5mm is enough to cause a slight gap between the processor and heatsink (due to the amount of them) which would render the thermal paste vastly more ineffective
Hey I did thermal paste replacements and now did thermal pad as it kept overheating. I used thermal grizzly 1.5 mm pads. It turns on then off after 5 seconds. Please let me know how I could fix this.
The gap between the ram chips and heatsink is 1.5 ~ 1.6 mm. I think a soft 2mm might be the better choice, but I am still unsure
I used soft 2mm pads without issue. 1.75mm pads exist as well
thanks for the good tutorial. i was able to open mine up and put some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut in there.
Great stuff George - Hope it’s running better now.
I ended up trying this and it seems like it worked. Thanks 👍🏽
Little correction. The chip you have put the thermal compound on, is not the gpu. It’s the soc (System on a chip). It contains cpu and gpu in one chip. Just for future reference.
How many of y’all are here because of Modern Warfare?? 😂

Me, in f***ing november
Me, does it fix the game crash issue?
Papa Cheeky fixed this weeeeeks ago dude
Not for me, my game crashes every time I get into a game and sometimes before then.
Thanks for this video. It helped me replace the thermal paste on my sons overheating Xbox.
Did it. Works great. Once I put it back together I forgot to plug in the fan connector and had to start over so don’t do what I did. Also having issues with the front usb and reconnect buttons. I’m going to strip it down again tmmr and try to fix that.
not smart, keep leaving the console locked in that closed compartment
Ikr I also used to have mine in small little compartment but now I just place the Xbox on top instead
The exhaust is in the back, and there's plenty of space for airflow.
iMiguelAOG air comes in from the back and sides and comes out form the top so putting it in a area where the air can get hot is bad
@@reapermoon5821 That's correct for the One and One S but the One X takes in air from the sides and blows it out through the back.
@@reapermoon5821 The top of the X is sealed. its only exposed thru the sides and back
Thank you for this excellent, screw by screw video. I just repaired my son in laws xbox. Amazon the sound difference. Oh, my board showed the same border 'contamination' as yours.
Thanks Mark - When the repairs done correctly and early enough it can make a massive difference. Glad it helped.

Great stuff.
Problem started on modern warfare for me now it's like it infected the rest of my games
Maybe playing modern warfare dried the chip up some more.
@@CraftyDoctor Got the xbox fixed turned out the game dryed up all the thermal paste on the cpu so the xbox overheated instantly, honestly didn't think the game would be powerful enough to do that

Hi bro, just followed your video and my xbox one x Scorpion Edition is now as good as new! Thanks man. You got a new sub!
Thanks a lot Scalaneo - it really can make a massive difference if you get to the repair before any serious damage is done.
Mine was wall to wall dust Nd gunk. So far she's running super quiet , like a dream. Thanks so much.
Boom
The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the top cover back on

Oh my god yes
I can't get the top cover back on😮
It’s a bit of an anxiety attack when you’re about to turn it on again, but holy hell is it worth it. MW went from crashing my friend’s Xbox on startup to being whisper quiet during a match.
Edit: Just keep in mind that many places will not accept your console if you remove the warranty sticker - if a trade in is something you see yourself doing in the future.
which thermal paste was used? same one in this video?
@@mcLOVINdonalds Does not really matter, any paste from a known brand should be fine. one X does not have that high of a TDP. If you really want the best go for grizzly conductonaut or noctua.

My Xbox One X is running insanely quiet and smooth now. Thank you! I would also like yo mention that my motherboard had the same markings as yours.
Thanks Thiason it really is a big difference in the cooling - Also thanks for letting me know about the markings on Xbox One X motherboard / PCB.
@ Thiason Wilson..What thermal pads did you use? It seems Artic don't do 2mm pads. There nearest they have Is 1.5mm
@@xboxgamer7453 I ordered some 100x100x2mm blue thermal pad off of Amazon. It was enough there to cut out what I needed to do both my Xbox One X and my Nintendo Switch. I don't believe the brands matter much, as long as you get some good rated stuff of that size.

XBOX ONE X REVIEW from THE VERGE.
The world’s most powerful console is here
By Tom Warren@tomwarren Nov 3, 2017, 3:00am EDT
"The real promise of the Xbox One X is 'true 4K' gaming. Most games made for the Xbox One are designed for 1080p TVs, which have a quarter of the pixels found on a new 4K TV. The Xbox One X is more than four times faster than the original Xbox One, so it's capable of 4K gaming."
I used thermal gryzzly kryonaut but my games freezes and console stops working. Is there any other solution?
Many thanks! Got mine fixed with this today and RDR2 and Wolfenstein 2 no longer blowing my machine up.
Absolutely brilliant - Glad it helped
Thx for the GREAT video! I've watched a bunch so far and yours is definitely at the top of the list. Cheers, mate! :)
Thank you
...getting the x-clip back on is literally the only thing i wanted to see. taking it off is easy, getting it back on with the same amount of pressure after bending it is the hard part...........
Chris Williams i just smack it with a pair of pliers as long as ypu dont hit the board its fine
@The Unknown i used a mini blowtorch to soften it then dropped a 30 kg ball on it to bump the clamp into place.
Ha! Thank you, sir, for your instruction video. Frankly, I am an older gamer and would rather PAY a techie to fix my stuff correctly than mess-about and later have to buy a new machine. /grins
Wanted to watch your video to see what I'd paid-for; and, whether it was worth the pittance.
-It was; and thx again!!
I to am a older gamer - but I’m to tight to pay someone to repair the Xbox one x, has to be said I’m like that with everything to be honest :)

thanks for the great video my xbox was doing the same thing super loud fan and would shut off after like a hour of play time. after the restart it says to check for air restrictions causing a over heat issue. i did notice the same small issue with the discoloration on the copper on the board i wouldnt worry about it at all.
after playing the same game for about half hour i can hardly hear the thing running. supper happy and my stress level dropped.
thanks again
Seguí tus instrucciones a la perfección y ya dejo de hacer ruido, gracias
me alegro de que las instrucciones te hayan ayudado y detuvieron tu ruidosa xbox one x
Why did they remove the vent on the top that was on the xbox one s? Surly having the heat coming out the top would of helped cool it down just like the One S?
They no longer needed as much cooling because they are using a vapour chamber inside of it instead of just grills if that makes sense
aesthetics probably
So is that just a regular screwdriver or do I need to go out and buy some fancy screw driver?
You need t8 and t10 screwdrivers to open your xbox one
It’s not a NES it uses Torx screwdrivers aka security screws...
Thanks for the excellent video. I bought a Gears version of the Xbox One X second hand and didn't notice any issue at first (watching blu rays) but just in the menu of games it sounded like a jet engine, much much louder than my launch model XO. Now it's repasted I can't hear it at all (there is some noise, but I have to nearly mute the TV for it to be audible). It's worth watching a reassembly video for putting the top cover back on because it can be fiddly but is very easy once you a shown how to do it.
Brilliant- Glad it helped
I did the same on my scorpio edition and it runs great, no more fan noises and no more overheat shutdowns 👌🏻😎
Any recommendations for thermal pads? I'm getting shut down due to overheating, which I didn't have before. The thermal pads I used were SPHINX 2mm I found on Amazon. The pads have a clear imprint from their respective chips, so they're making contact. I'm thinking it's the pads not being pliable enough to be mushed down like the stock pads were. Btw The mx4 I applied had good coverage on the APU so I don't think that's the problem.
Edit: Turns out 2mm pads were not allowing the heatsink to make proper contact with the APU. 1.5mm pads were the correct height
I’m having the same problem what pads did you purchase
