    I read about NOOKY and NOOKY HESUM in an old Leica Manual, which was interesting, but aside from "Shutterbug Ads" or a long-established camera store, these close focus adapters were hard to find. I later read about the Dual Range Summicron of the Leica M system, but 35mm SLRs of the 1960's had easier to find/more affordable attachments, from close-up lenses to Macro lenses. (That Micro-Nikkor print ad showing a postage stamp, then the collector holding it in tweezers made that a reason to save up to enter the ranks of "bug hunters.")

    Hi Matt, amazing work on youtube! Quick question, I was wondering about the SOOKY-M with elmar-M mount combination; is it possible to focus from the close focus distance to all the way up to infinity with the close-up goggles on the M3 with this combo? Thanks :)

    Beautiful associations of optical and mechanical technologies that were very exciting when through the lens technologies were not yet available and visioflex adapters made macrophotographie with Leica at all possible.
    We now wonder if the image quality with these exciting vintage material is rewarding and if we are not better off doing macro photography with a small and cheap compact digital camera

    I've the Summicron DR and to be honest I just find it too annoying to use - the crossover point is right where I want to be when I'm shooting portraits and goggles on or off I keep hitting the stop and having to change over! My M3 was adjusted to allow focusing to about 75cm so I just prefer using my Voigtlander 50mm that lets me into that range hassle free

  • @AGL93311
    @AGL93311 Před 4 lety +1

    A couple of points, as Charles pointed out you omitted the use of the lenshead of the v2 Summicron (rigid, chrome) on SOMKY with UOORF. This lens is optically identical to the DR. I have never owned a DR, but if it's lens head screws out it may also work on UOORF/SOMKY if has become separated from it's DR goggles. I do not know if this is true, maybe someone can check. The SOMKY also works with collapsible Summicrons, M or LTM. There was also a collapsible M 50/3.5 elmar (v early for M3). No idea what you could use for closeups with that lens, but I suspect it may also work with SOMKY.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

      Thank you Adam, yes I read the DR head comes off to use with the Visoflex system so i'm sure it will work with close focus adapter. I've never tried but thanks for that great info. • @AGL93311

    Also your Barnack camera closeup device discussion needs correction. There are three devices NOOKY (for 50/3.5 Elmar (LTM)), NOOKY-HESUM (50/2.5 Hektor, 50/2 Summar and 50/2 Summitar) and SOOKY (50/2.8 Elmar (LTM or M), 50/2 collapsible Summicron (LTM or M), 50/2 Rigid (v2) Summicron chrome lenshead with UOORF ( LTM or SM). Like the SOOKY-M(SOMKY) the SOOKY may also work with DR lenshead/UOORF and/or 50/3.5 Elmar-M. Need an expert opinion on those...

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Před 4 lety

      Thanks Adam, as always! Great info. The NOOKY HESUM works with all my LTM 50s and even a Soviet clone version though I know it probably shouldn't! I'm only covering the basics from the gear I use. You have a better knowledge of this stuff than me. (I'm still a photographer at heart but I do love playing with different gear!). :)

    • @AGL93311
      @AGL93311 Před 4 lety

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks, Matt.
      An additional nonobvious use of these close focusing devices is as variable length short extension tubes for their intended lenses on mirrorless digital cameras. For example on my Ricoh GXR with Leica lens module a Summitar (with LTM to M adapter) works mounted on the GRX-M module as it does on a RF Leica (albeit as APS-C) focusing from 1 meter to infinity. Collapse the lens and mount it on a NOOKY-HESUM, as you would with a Barnack, then put that same LTM to M adapter on the NOOKY-HESUM and mount that on the GRX-M module. You then can focus the lens on the Ricoh at the same distances as on your IIIa (but with the cropped Sensor, so with an effective higher magnification). It looks a bit odd with the frame and external optic sticking out uselessly, but works like a charm. I see no reason why a SOMKY could not be used in a similar manner. Although no substitute for a real macro lens (e.g. Leitz 65/3.5 Elmar-V with OTZFO focusing mount, 14167 adapter and a generic R to M adapter), it works well in a pinch.
      And of course the close focus capability of the Summitar/NOOKY-HESUM combo is essentially the same as can be achieved much more easily using a Nikkor 50/2 HC ltm lens/LTM-M adapter mounted directly on the GXR-m (or on other mirrorless digital cameras) without extension tubes.
