    Which is the best Leica Summicron 50mm f2 lens to buy? Leica 50mm Summicron v5 vs. older Leica 50mm Summicron Dual Range (DR). Leica 50mm Summicron Review + Sample Photos. Pros and cons of the modern Summicron 50 version 5 Pre-APO 50f2 against the vintage Leica Summicron Dual Range + How to use it with the close focus goggles (often seen with Leica M3). I show the 50mm Summicron vs Summilux 50mm f/1.4 ASPH (and Leica APO-Summcron-M 75mm f/2) as size comparison. *This video doesn't include the Leica 50mm Summicron APO but I will test it when I get chance. There is also the popular Leica Summicron 50mm f2 Rigid and Leica Summicron 50mm f2 collapsible but I don't own those models so can't share.
    Leica Summicron 50mm f2 sample photos included shot with a Leica M9, Leica M240, Leica CL digital and on Leica film cameras.

    Greetings Matt, What I find amazing is that when I using the Nikon DSLR ecosystem the focal length that I had the absolute least amount of love for was the ‘nifty 50’. But now that I’ve made the switch to the Leica M ecosystem, the ‘nifty 50’ is my lens of choice. I share that with you now because you asked your viewers to share their preferred 50. I just purchased a Mint copy of the 50 DR with goggles. That lens is a jewel! My first 50 and subsequently my first love, was the Lux. My second 50 was the APO f2. And I’ve been forced to make room for all three of them because I can’t give any one of them up. Be Blessed! Chaps

I had 100+ comments on the recent video so that pushed all earlier ones to the bottom. Yes I like the 50s both on Leica and Nikon. For Leica especially it just makes sense as on the Leica iii, Leica M3 and similar cameras they were designed around the 50. Congrats on your DR, yes an excellent lens as is the Lux and Nocti v1. I still need to get an APO but i'm not sure I need it/ can afford it! :)

    Stunning images from the crons of 50's and 90's. Well done, matt! I used to have an immaculate 50 summicron rigid (the optically identical twin to the DR) that produced delicious results on films and sensors. Unfortunately it managed to develop over the years some serious internal haze that reduced the image contrast significantly. No one seems to know for certain how the haze arises within these vintage summicrons or how it can be remedied effectively. Apparently the problem has plagued quite a number of type 2 crons to various degrees. I would check you dr regularly if i were you.Having had to sell mine at a great loss unfortunately, I don't think I will for use get another type 2 again. Been a happy user of the type 5 since...

      Thanks Q, I appreciate you sharing that and sorry to hear the news. I believe where you live is very important in this situation. Countries with high humidity are higher risk for lenses. The UK probably less so. People use dry bags and dry cabinets in such countries as I hear.

      @tuisitala9068 Před 4 lety

      Interesting comment. I am thinking of buying a 111g with a rigid summicron f2. Do these older screw versions also suffer from the haze?

    • @q8b37
      @q8b37 Před 4 lety

      @@tuisitala9068 Vintage glasses are more prone to haze than newer ones but no one can put a definitive finger on it as to why. Deterioration of the various organic components in the lens is probably the most likely culprit and how and where the glasses are stored and used played a part, too. I wouldn't be deterred from getting a rigid summicron if I were you. But one needs to examine the optics very carefully for fogginess. Incidentally, I'd never wipe the front or back element of vintage Leica glass with anything including microfibre cloth unless the image quality is at stake because of the dust/dirt/smear etc. They take no prisoners in marking the glass.

    Comparing the DR to the 5th version on film at over 1 meter focus did you notice any difference in quality, resolution, contrast wide open between the lens? thanks. great video by the way. Matt, I have been told by an excellent camera repairman that the best rangefinder camera ever made was the Zeiss Contax 11a. He thinks the Contax11a is made better than the M3 especially internally which is all metal in the contax. He also thinks the rangefinder is better in the Contax. . In the near future i am going to buy a Contax 11a and have it cla'd and check it out. It's a beautiful camera. I shoot film only and currently shoot a M6 and a 111f . The M6 was purchased new in 1989. I have not shot an MP. I think the best leica made was the M4 which I have had 2. Have not tried the M5.

      Hi John, sorry I missed this. I've not done side by side detailed testing between the 2 lenses but I generally seem to prefer the DR. I'm not saying it is better but it focuses closer so that is the main reason I use it.I have a Contax iiia. Nicely made yes but the M3 is far better in terms of useability. The RF is far better on the M3, no contest. I've not even put film in the Contax I was that unimpressed. The iia might be even nicer made but unless the RF patch was improved then I dont rate it sadly. Try before you buy! :) Great to hear you have a M6 and iiif. I like my iif and the M6 is a good investment it seems! :) I've not shot a M4 M5 or MP.

    I don't believe it was mentioned in the video, but some GRIND away the protrusion of the DR close focus portion of the RF cam (It then fits on any camera). This extended cam is what obstructs and causes issues in many modern digitals (this protrusion encounters the internal baffles and photocell housing etc.). - Please DON"T grind/mod this collectable lens; there's no turning back when this is mod is performed. - I'm a Leica tech and I do get this request on occasion (easily done when the lens is all apart). BUT, I refuse on principle to provide this service/butchery...

    There is no better 50mm lens on Earth than the LEICA SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2.
    The SUMMICRON is the world's reference for a 50mm photographic lens.
    The LEICA SUMMICRON has always been the world's standard for performance, and the newest version prove that this reputation is earned, not given. This is an extraordinary lens.
    Because every other LEICA SUMMICRON f/2 lens has been updated to ASPH (28mm in 2000, 35mm in 1996, 75mm in 2005 and 90mm in 1998), a LEICA SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2 ASPH seems like a logical update, however LEICA says this is unlikely simply because the performance can't be much improved, but the price would become about the same as the f/1.4, so why bother.
    There is no better 50mm lens, or any lens for that matter.
    This the review from Ken Rockwell that made my mind up to purchase one.

      Matt, the vintage 50 summicron DR is heavier than the non-DR version because the DR has a brass lens barrel versus the single range, which is aluminum, or aluminium for Brits.
