  • This is my review of the Leica Summicron 50mm Dr / Dual Range. I bought this lens just before the current world event so I've had it for a while and I've compiled some shots and thoughts about it for you in this video. It's a really great lens, so I hope you enjoy the review! My price estimate is a touch high but it's just to temper your expectations. Make sure to like and subscribe if you enjoyed the video! :)
    Most film used for the photos in this review is black and white, which I feel is particularly suitable for this style of lens. I also used cinestill film, so keep that in mind while viewing some of the color photos.

    Tried pretty much all Leica lens in the last 7 years...and by far my favorite lens is the Rigid / DR summicron and the summicron 8 elements (too expensive now though). For modern performance, the ASPH Summicrons are too clinical so you’re better off with the Summilux 35 / 50mm, but I still find these lens from the 50s to be better than their modern counterparts both in build quality / design / rendering. Thanks for reviewing this lens, much appreciated!

    having the goggles for close up portraits is a killer, but I love my rigid ✨
    nice review Drew, I wish this video was there before I got my lens :D

    Nice video and useful info. I'm using mine on an M4. It's a bit small and quirky, but I quickly get into it. At first I was going to swap it for a more modern lens, but now I realise its potential and it's a keeper. Subbed.

    Great video! I got one of these at an estate sale. Testing it out right now with a Leica M3 using Ultramax. Will try black and white next tho! Those B&W pics looked beautiful.

    Nice review man! I remember watching your Leica M46 review a while back. I just picked up a 50mm Summicron V3 and now I'm thinking about getting a UV filter/lens hood. Didn't take in to account the accidents that might happen.

      Appreciate it! Yeh you've got to be careful with these older lenses especially. I didn't have a lens hood when I recorded this review, but I just picked one up to keep everything a little bit better protected

    That‘s a very nice and balanced user review; thanks very much! If your sample is earlier than a 1963 (when the 12585 hood came out), another beautiful fit would be the IROOA hood. It is not vented, but has a chrome band almost identical with the surface of the lens body.

      That hood is beautiful, Thanks for the pointer! :) - wish I'd included in the video, but oh well

    Uhhhh this was the perfect video. I’ve been searching for a 50 for my M3 and you’re realllyy swaying me in this direction, which is kinda what I wanted to go anyways, but have been considering some of the ZM options because of price. But man... the rigid might be it for me. Looks fantastic

    great video. looking to buy one for my M8.2 but current listings for that lens are pricy so I'm still waiting for a clean one with affordable price. subbed.

    My favorite Leica lens. I use it on my m3 and expose for the highlights. Let the shadows go black.

      what 35mm film do you like?

  • @jamescaldwell5
    @jamescaldwell5 Před 7 měsíci

    I shoot full frame mirror-less digital. (Sigma fpL) My motivation for upgrading to full frame was so that that I could adapt vintage lenses and they would perform optically similar to how they did on film. (corner to corner rather then cropped down). I am very intrigued with the Dual Range feature, other than pixel peeping, are there any other issues with using this o a digital camera? Will the dual range feature work on an M mount adapter? Obviously I will not need the view finder adapter. Great video btw. Def subscribing.

    The Uv filter e49 how much does it protect the lense , and does it change the lighthing settings?

    • @DrewWaddell
      @DrewWaddell  Před 2 lety

      It will protect the front element from scratches and prevent you from needing to clean it directly, which prevents wear over time. It doesn't change the exposure settings at all!

    a bit confused, does a DR lens focuses correctly on an M6? Non TTl and a TTl?

    • @DrewWaddell
      @DrewWaddell  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The DR lens has two focus ranges, macro and standard. The standard range will work on both M6 models, but the close focus range will not work on the M6 TTL

    I must say that the 50mm Summicron DR produces beautifully rendered images on my Fuji x-pro2. Nothing clinical but the most painterly images I've seen for digital images . The rendering of color and light nothing shot of spectacular. Of course it's one my prized pieces of glass in my collection.

    • @DrewWaddell
      @DrewWaddell  Před rokem

      It's a real work of art. For me, it's almost like turning anything I photograph into its most nostalgic form. The somewhat soft rendering and delicate contrast are magical.

    Can we as photographers agree not to use that horrible u unnecessary word Bokeh please, particularly with the American pronunciation of it. Every time I hear it , I just want to puke. Your review was otherwise good and valid.
