Your videos are a joy to watch. Your pleasant voice combined with relaxing music and beautiful images makes it a perfect viewing experience. I've just got a M3 and ordered a Summicron DR today. I can't wait to test them out in the field. I actually prefer the slight vintage look over the clinically sharp look of their modern lenses. Peter Karbe does a fantastic job, he aims at perfection but perfection and "feel" are two different things to me. This lens got a lot of feel. The images of Oleg Lazarev also convinced me to invest in this unique lens.
Just got my M4 black chrome and this 50mm dr now....thank you to bring happiness to my life.

love your videos. I was considering in getting a new len of summilux 50 or this 50DR. Finally I chose thr 50DR, cannot wait to have it!
Often a lens with ' character ' in photographic terms means a lens that is under corrected with all sorts of aberrations like a Holga, not so here. This lens oozes character and quality with very high resolving power but in a low/medium contrast package, unlike Zeiss and some modern Leica ASPH lenses. I like mine very very much and if a collapsible type at a reasonable price can be found, I will buy that too, I know fat chance of that. Thank you for your review and beautiful photography.
I own a 50 DR too. A very fine lens. With the adapter you can shoot very close and amazing portraits. 0,5 instead of 0,7m makes a big difference for full face portraits.

Some notes, I own this lens too, I bought it to go with my M3 many years ago.
7:47 The close focusing adapter works perfectly fine on the M-A and MP as well. I use it on my MP, it fits perfectly. Be careful to use the lens on digital Leica M bodies, even without the goggles. I found it does not mount correctly with focus across the normal range on my M10.
One of the best features of this lens is the focus scale. There is no other modern Leica lens or vintage Leica lens with equal performance to the DR that features such a useful focus scale for zone focusing. On the DR, you can PRECISELY set the lens to the hyperfocal distance for each aperture, as the distances are clearly marked with lines where modern Leica lenses do not have a useful focus scale at all. For that reason alone, the DR is my favorite 50mm lens for street shooting.

If you find a clean copy of the Summicron Rigid it doesn't have the glow effect and is adequately sharp at f/2.0. Most of these lenses has suffered from haze vaporized from the oils in the focusing helicoid over time. Not visible by the naked eye but you rarely see perfectly clean optics in these if you shine the flashlight on your phone through it. No other lens I've ever owned has been close to the build quality of this Summicron Rigid DR. Great video, Steven.
Thank You Daniel! Indeed I cleaned it last week, this lens can spin off to three part optics group and I was cleaned it but still have a little suffered inside the optics group. and tested it show Completely different performance.

Tanno-san, very nice review. I’m a hobbyist Leica shooter that primarily enjoys digital M’s. But I maintain an incurable desire to shoot film on occasion. Wanting to keep to one ecosystem a M analog body was my preference over the Voigtlander Bessa options. And at the end of the day, the M3 was my choice. I have recently found a kit that includes the M3, 50 f2 DR, and the MR light meter. Very handsome kit and I think, fairly priced. I visited CZcams to see if anyone had done a review the included this camera and lens. Thank you again for a very informative and enjoyable review.

Hi, when putting on the goggles, can you still focus to infinity while it is on?
Thank you for your enjoyable and informative video. My eBay purchased 50mm Rigid arrived today, it had been recently CLA'd so is beautiful. However, I did not realize it was the DR version as it did not include the "googles". Your video showed me what the little button is for and how to get into the close focus mode and that was interesting. I have no need for the close focus so will not miss not having the close focus attachment. I found the lens will not focus to infinity with my Leica digital rangefinder but it does work on my Nikon Z if I want to use it on digital. Thanks for the great example photos. Will be taking it out on the M3 tomorrow with B&W film.

Hey Steven, this is too funny, I just got my 50mm DR in the mail today and stumbled across your video. Haven’t shot it yet on my M3 but did shoot a few frames on my M10-P. As you stated, it’s an amazing lens, a little soft at f/2.0 but I like it. Really a sleeper Leica lens. Can’t wait to see what comes out of the M3. Great video!

Amazing B+W photography! I am looking at this lens to adapt to MFT Lumix GH6 photography, but also bmpcc super16 video. Wonder if it would work well?

I have exactly the same complain about the Japanese bread. Too soft! That’s why they got uneven teeth bc they didn’t chew hard food when they were young ;)
