I got one from post-1945 in excellent condition with no scratches/haze (!) with original front lens cap (coated, too - this lens was made coated starting with serial # 587601, mine also has the 10 blades). The Leica pocket book explains that coating in 1942 was proprietary to military only. But customers could have it sent in to Leica for coating after the war ended for a long time. Aperture and distance rings vary a lot during the time this lens was made: mine has an interesting 2, 2 (yes, twice!), 3.2, 4.5, 6.3, 9, 12.5 aperture scale. I had CLA done with mine because when I got mine at an auction it was in very dusty condition. Love the 10 blade bokeh shape. Best feature of this lens is its circular bokeh in certain conditions - it is unique and very pleasant. The lens performs well with color, too. Regarding filters, I have used mine with std 39 mm filters which I taped with two little transparent Scotch tapes between filter ring and outside front lens - works well! Prices for this lens increased significantly in the past two years. I heard that this lens can have often the issue of delamination depending on age and condition.

Hi Martin, great to hear that you have a nice copy too! Yes I got mine with my first Leica iii at the end of 2019 for a good price luckily. I since ordered the 39mm filter adapter so I can use normal 39mm caps and yellow filter in the summer. Check you don't have a rare one with the 2, 2 thing!!

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Good idea to check - from an online search I found that I have a copy made post 1945 (the first list I checked with serial numbers is wrong!) which also aligns with the age of my IIIc camera (1947) which came with it. I found one other online post in the rangefinder forum a few years back asking about the weird aperture numbers starting with 2, 2. This seems more rare - normally 2, 2.2 or 2, 2.8 is used instead.

Excellent video Matt. I have this lens, form 1952, which is in nearly pristine condition, especially the glass. I agree with everything thing you said. It is a fantastic optic and renders beautiful images. I also shoot B&W film (only) at f2 mostly, and love the bokeh, which to me has a round, swirling character about the background area. And, stopped down (f5.6>) it is plenty sharp for B&W film, even compared to my v5 Summicron 50mm. I would never part with this lens, it is a life-long friend, 100%.

To be honest I shot one role of transparencies (unprocessed) and am now shooting through B&W roll as soon as a finish the B&W roll I will get them processed. I have a German Summicron with which to compare.

Had a coated 10 bladed version for a short while and it was a stunning lens. Very swirly bokeh and sharp as well.
The later 6 bladed versions used the irises from the earlier Summar. Leica found a box full of them apparently and decided to use them up before bringing out the Summicron. Not particularly struck on clickless tbh, but at least you can get half, third or even quarter stops. Better than the full stops of the Elmar 5cm f2.8. Given the choice again I'd get another Summitar instead of the Elmar. I still have an orange filter for one.

Great review, which inspired me took for this lens. Got lucky on ebay and just bought one from 1949, 10 blades and coated, so best of both types. Plus it came with the filter adapter, vented round "clip-on" hood (12585H), and ltm-to-M adapter. All for $400. Can't wait to try it on my M2. Kind of afraid to try it on my Canon ltm cameras, though, as I'm afraid if I collapse it, it might hit the metal shutter or light baffles.

Hi again, Matt! Another first rate presentation. I have a coated version of the Summitar in question. Of particular interest: it stops down to f16. I think you stated that yours only stopped down to f12.5, a rather strange figure. The lens was originally mounted on a Barnack iiif. I found the camera, in virtually unused condition, in the basement of a Washington house and since I was the only person who knew what it was I carried it off as a gift. I have not used it much, as my standard lens is the 35mm Summichron on my M3.

Very nice review of the Summitar! I just would like to add that you don't necessarily need to buy a very early uncoated Summitar in order to avoid that hexagonal aperture. The very late coated Summitars have again a ten blade aperture. My lens has the No. 797722. Great as usual Matt!
Just like to add a couple of points, the highest serial number 10 blade Summitar i have seen is 799873. So any from 601,000 to there (and probably a few earlier) will be coated 10 blades, your best choice.
Also filters, as you know, a great way to go is a Summitar-39 adapter, cheaply available on the Bay from the Middle Kingdom. But really if you are using an uncoated, or even single-coated, lens with a filter it is best to go with multicoated filters. B+W are great but a tad pricey. I have found that Hoya makes great multicoated (HMC) filters and are less costly. I would also use a larger standard size (40.5, 49 or 52) with stepup rings. It is a balancing act between size and lens versatility for what you choose. I have standardized on 52mm with step up rings (eg 39-52) that cover many lenses up to 52mm filter size (34-52, 39-52,49-52,40.5-52,43-52, 46-52, 48-52,49-52 and 52)
I carry in a little folding wallet the following multicoated 52mm filters; UV, Yellow, Orange, Red, Green, circular polarizer and 3-stop (8) neutral density. These seven filters cover just about anything you would want to use with black and white film for exposure and tonal control. Pick the stepup rings that you need for the day’s lens choices and you are good to go. In fact step up rings are so light and inexpensive a additional set in your vehicle might be a good idea...

    • @AGL93311
      @AGL93311 Před 3 lety +1

Whoops! In the above list I included 49-52 twice. One should be 40-52 which is my most used with several Canon ltm lenses.
Also the Summitar is the safest collapsible F2 lens to use on a V Series Canon (VT, VT deluxe (all variants), L-2, L-1, L-3, VL, VL2) or Canon P.

One alternative that might help the pocketbook: I have the essential yellow filter, but it is a push-on fit on the rim of the lens barrel. I was concerned about possible vignetting, but this appears to be negligible. This type of filter might be cheaper and easier to find.

I have a iiib with a Summitar which my father bought 2nd hand a long while before I was around in the 50’s. It still has its original cap and hood. The serial number is 66****, shuts down to f16 with 10 aperture blades. It looks un coated but I recall my father saying he had it coated for colour in the 70’s by Leica.
I’ve used it occasionally on my M10 and M9 but it’s pretty irreplaceable to me and these days lives on its iiib in my vintage cabinet. Thinking I might start using it a bit more.

    Vintage look .....?
It is the fata morgana of most photograpers who live now.
Almost impossible as long as they mount their favourite lens on a digital or an analog camera.
Todays black and white films can not show the vintage look.
Forget all modern black and white film developers.
Thou shall not push nor pull a film.
Multi Grade and RC papers have a plastic look.
The negative and reversal colour films of today are too clean.
Do not scan the negatives and do not make digital prints.
All you need is the craft and arts.
Plus the right equipement, films, ppapers and chemicals.
Buy BW films without the anti halo backing.
Buy colour negative films without the red masking.
Orthochromatic halftone single layer BW films are a must.
Do not use T grain and Delta BW films.
Panchromatic BW films need to be exposed via a blue filter.
Never do a pre wash before the developing of the film.
Do not tap or bang the developing tank on the table.
Rodinal or Adonal 1:50 and 1:100 are the best developers
    for BW negatives.
Print on BW chlorobromide paper, non clossy, double weight, made by Forte.
A Viradon rinse for 10 minutes gives a vintage colouring of the print.
