    Struggle to hit focus with your fast 50mm lens or avoid using longer focal lengths? I was the same. What you need is a Leica viewfinder magnifier M 1.4x. Total gamer changer!! It makes any Leica M camera viewfinder as good as Leica M3 (*With the exception of the Leica M10). You can now nail your focus wide open on a Leica Summilux 50mm f1.4 ASPH, Noctilux or longer lenses such as 75mm, 90mm or 135mm. The Leica view finder magnifier gives an equivalent 50mm frameline view and magnifies both the rangefinder patch and the frame lines in the viewfinder. In addition to the Leica magnifier 1.4 I use there is also the Leica magnifier 1.25x version.

    First of all, I must say that during my quest to acquired a M3DS a little over a month ago, I had been watching your videos religiously whenever I am editing! Great in depth info as always Matt to guide us on the Leica journey, I watched your video so much that I also picked up a M240 last weekend, and a health array of LTM, M mount and Canon LTM lenses for the two camera. I even picked up an EVF, per your suggestion. But aside from critical focus, I really miss the ability to see 1:1 on a 50mm on the M240 as 50mm are my walk-around lenses of choice. I think this has convinced me, yet again, to go spend some money!

    Fantastic review, Matt! I use the 1.4x magnifier on my MP and used it with the M6 too. Both of these cameras are 0.72 viewfinder. What I find useful is with the 1.4 magnifier on 0.72 viewfinder you get 1:1 view through the viewfinder. That means that you can now focus with both eyes open. When you do it, your brain will instantly tell you which bit is in focus. It kind of magically works. I find focusing so much easier with both eyes open. On a different note, I've noticed the rubber ring on your magnifier is worn off. I've had the same issue with mine and Leica replaced it free of charge when I contacted support. In fact, they've sent me 3 replacement rings. Looking forward to more of your great Leica reviews.

    Anyway instant success with my 50mm f2.4 summarit as i found framing and focus much easier and as a bonus it works well with my fave lens the 35mm f2.4 summarit as it still improves my ability to focus and i can still see the 35mm frame lines.

    Wearing glasses I can barely see the 50mm framelines, so that is the maximum magnification for my 50mm Summilux.

    Thanks Matt for this and I am certainly thinking of picking one of these up! However, I am always reminded by this: “He had his little Leica,” [fashion photographer Helmut] Newton remembers, “and he simply would point and shoot.” Since Cartier-Bresson’s hand isn’t as steady as it used to be, some of the pictures were a bit fuzzy. “Sharpness,” he told Newton, “is a bourgeois concept.” Newton sits back and laughs: “I thought that was just divine.”

    Thanks a lot Matt for this helpful video. Sorry for my late comment. I checked B&H, it recommends 1.25x for 50mm lenses & 1.4x for 75 & 90mm ... which has me confused, & unsure of what to buy of the two magnifiers !
    Also, some Users have given negative reviews about 1.4x :--
    1st Reviewer : "I have the M7 and M9 & the magnifier 1.25. I purchased the 1.4 to try to get greater magnification but found indoors the darkness of my rangefinder was too great. At the same time it was helping with focus but it was hindering me to see the focus patch. I sent the 1.4 back, it may work for you it didn't for me."
    2nd Reviewer says : "I have a 1.25 magnifier & sometimes felt not easy focusing enough & try to use a 1.4. After tried between 1.25 & 1.4 and by using M50/0.95 & M90AA several times, I found actually 1.4 does not improve any. Yes, it enlarges the imaging, but depending upon light, so final effort is almost the same as 1.25, and you need back your eye a little then could see shutter speed data.Finally I decide keeping it for my M8.2 and leave 1.25 for M9P."
    3rd One : "the magnifier works, but the gain is marginal subjectively tested with several Leica lenses. Calculating gain/dollar, marginal is a generous description, at best, of the practical advantage to the photographer. Moreover, (at least subjectively to me), the viewfinder image is not quite as sharp-edged crisp using the magnifier as it is through the original viewfinder used without the magnifier. Thus, a marginal magnification benefit is offset by a possible image deterioration. In other words, the practical net gain in to the photographer in routine use on the street approaches zero. I am not adverse to spending money on Leica products as I have done in the past, but this duo (magnifier and adaptor ring) at nearly $500 is beyond even my relatively relaxed tolerance. I sent both items back to B&H."
    Lastly, a 1.25x User says : "Leica would do all M users a tremendous favor if they'd simply put a diopter adjustment on the viewfinder of the M camera. Would it kill them to do this? I know it would forever alter the whole Oskar Barnack mojo, but he's been dead for 100 years (or so). Absent this very simple customer focused improvement to an otherwise fine photographic tool, we're stuck using substitutes such as the 1.25x and 1.40x magnifiers. I've tried the 1.4x and it made everything a bit fuzzy, regardless of the lens. Now I'm trying the 1.25x and it's a little better i.e. a little less fuzzy. But frankly it does not provide as much benefit for focusing my Noctilux as I had hoped for. Until Leica puts in a few 21st century touches on the M (besides the nearly useless Movie mode), this is as good as it gets."
    ___________________________
    I will also get the Thread Adapter 24001 for my M10P with either of the two magnifiers you'll suggest.
    I apologise for copy + pasting the long reviews here. There were many other happy users of both magnifiers too, on B&H.

  • @wilsonlaidlaw

    I have had two of them sitting in my bits and pieces box for the last 10-15 years. One is a variable diopter one, which I don't need at all now that I had cataracts done and my corneas lasered at the same time and I also have a Leica fixed diopter 1.4X one. The problem with the 1.4X lenses that they obscure the 28mm frame totally and make the 35mm frame difficult to see. Before I had my eyes lasered, I found a -0.5 diopter in the eyepiece was the best thing for me. I am coming up to 74 years old and I can still focus my 75/f1.25, 85mm/f1.5 and 135/f3,4 with perfect accuracy, so not quite sure what I would achieve with a 1.4X magnifier to compensate for their downside. I always wondered why when Leica put variable diopter (excellent) eyepieces in their R cameras and other makers have them in their rangefinders, Leica either did not want to or was unable to.

    Honestly Matt, the best focusing accessory for fast rangefinder glass is... a Leica SL TYPE 601 (unless you're a dentist, then just get the SL2). Seriously, the rangefinder system is sadly inadequate for f/0.95 or even f/1.4 glass. With focus peaking or zoom and no need for constant tweaking of the rf mechanism, it's the only way to go.

    Have you tried this for 90mm lens on the M3? I don't use my Elmarit-M nearly enough, mainly because I find it difficult to compose in the smaller frame when I can see so much outside it. If the magnifier pushed the 50mm frames out of sight and made the 90mm frame look a bit more like the 50mm it would be nice!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Před 3 lety

      Hi Paul, yes it really benefits the 50 and 90. An easy way to explain it would be on a non-M3 the 35mm view becomes a 50mm view and the 50mm frame now fills the frame. On the M3 the 50mm frame would be slightly out of view I think and the 90mm would look larger.

    Hey Matt, I know this is an older post but I was wondering if you had a chance to try this on an M11. From B+H Photo in the U.S. I have found that an adapter is necessary for the M10 series but no mention of the M11. I am thinking that since the M11 comes after the M10 the threading on the viewfinder ring is inherited from that model, unless for some reason they decided to go back to the older threading. Anyway I couldn't find any confirmation on this but since you use the magnifier so much and if you had reviewed the M11, if you had a chance to se if it would work natively or if it requires an adapter like the M10. Cheers in advance. Always a pleasure to see your videos.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Před rokem +1

      Hello, yes the M11 uses the same diopters/ magnifiers as the M10 (both have the same larger VF). This 1.4x mag version fits older cameras only but I think you can get adapters to mount the old mag on newer body.

      If you only use 50mm it makes your viewfinder like the M3 where the 50mm lines now full the full viewfinder. I love it and use this but it’s personal preference. If you shoot mostly 28mm you would need to keep taking off but if only 50mm you can glue it on (joking) it’s that good to have for me.
