    You can use these Leica lenses for Sony, Fuji, Micro 4/3 as well as the obvious Leica cameras. (All lenses shown are rangefinder coupled so will work with Leica rangefinder cameras (+ Leica mirorrless cameras ofc!).
    In this video I cover the smallest Leica M lenses available for 5 different focal lengths. 21mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 90mm. I picked these lens lengths as each has an impressively small lens available. These are tiny Leica M mount glass if compared to a standard normal lens such as a Leica Summicron-M 50 f2. In the video I used my Leica Summilux 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens as a benchmark to compare other lens sizes to. This hands on side by side size comparison will give you a visual if you are looking to buy a small lens for your Leica (or mirrorless camera). I show the lenses on my Leica M6 Classic and the Leica CL film camera. The Leica CL (or Minolta CL) offers an ideal platform for the small Leica lenses to give a perfect Leica travel camera setup / kit. I will use a 21/40/90 (or a 28/40/90) lens trio with the CL for packing lightweight. It’s worth noting you can use Leica lenses on Sony mirrorless cameras, Fuji, etc. You can also shoot Leica on micro 4/3 camera. I use Leica M lenses for Micro Four Thirds too with my Lumix GH5. You just need the respective adapter from eBay or Amazon. These Leica lenses for micro 4/3 cameras make sense because you can then use the small form lenses on a small format camera. I will share more small vintage lenses in future posts.

    I have the 50mm f/2.8 collapsible Elmar and it is indeed tiny. Lovely lens. And yeah, like you mentioned in regards of older 90mm lenses, they are quite long and thin. At least my 9cm f/4 Elmar is.

    I know I get a lot of flak from friends that I use more non-Leica lenses on my Leica body, and while I do love my 50 Dual Range, and 90 Summicron, there is something to be said for the other offerings out there. The Voigtländer 40mm Nokton Classic S.C. is one of my favourites to use for everyday carry, great image quality and compact size to boot. Great video Matt, keep it up.

    Image quality and maximum aperture are most important to me for my shooting style and subject matter.
    When I need a small size, lightweight, and expendable camera for travel, I leave my Leica at home and carry a fixed-lens compact camera or a micro 4/3 camera with up to three small lenses or I just take my cell phone.
    However, this video is very informative. I will keep it for future reference.

      I tried the Voigtländer Super Wide-Heliar 15 mm f/4.5, Color-Skopar 21 mm f/3.5, and Nokton Classic-M 35 mm f/1.4. They are clearly vintage lenses, but I wasn’t happy with them on my CL or SL2. I now also have an M11, and I think those lenses would be even less functional on it.
      I recently picked up a used Voigtländer 35 mm f/1.2 Nokton v.1. It’s funky, but a keeper. It’s a lot different than my Leica Summilux-M 35 FLE I.

    Hi, Just for your info Zeiss makes a smaller 21mm zm lens and it is the 21mm f4.5 C. I own this lens and I bought it because it is tiny. Actually I bought a Zeiss 35mm (M7 like) Camera Zi (sometimes called the ZM) and proceeded to buy Zeiss’s smallest lenses for it. They are designated C for classic and compact (I believe). And they are the Zeiss zm 21mm f4.5c, 35mm f2.8c and the 50mm F 1.5c sonnar. They cover everything I need and are terrific.

  • @peterm2353
    @peterm2353 Před 2 lety +3

    There is an M mount version of the Summaron 35mm f3.5 which has a different appearance to the one shown by Matt. It has the same optical design but is made in native M mount. It was the first 35mm Summaron made for Leica M mount cameras and unlike the later version of this lens does NOT have goggles (which converts the 50mm frame-lines of the M3 to effective 35mm frame-lines). It is slightly larger than the LTM version shown by Matt but even so, I believe it is still smaller than the Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 shown. It is a nice lens with very pleasant rendering. Its only slight negative is that because it was intended for use on a Leica M3 with an accessory finder in the hot shoe, it does not bring up the 35mm frame-lines on any other M mount camera. Having said this, this is a simple modification which can be achieved by filing of the relevant flange on the lens mount so it activates the correct frame-line (but I just use the frame selection lever instead, or occasionally a hot-shoe mounted 35mm finder).

I have the collapsing 50mm f2.8 in two versions a 1958 LTM and a 1994 M-mount black - both of them very nice but different due to their difference in age. I consider its abberations way way above acceptable amount, I let it go after some 3 to 4M tbh, and do not regret not having it. I had not purchased the Leica M8 then (you and I must be on some similar wavelength for camera/lens choices). My latest generation 50mm Summilux gives mushy results on a A7III but gives really nice keeper photos (as you mention) on the M8. I'm going to look for the 28mm LTM lens this week. Have you considered the Sigma FP? It's not a serious photographer's camera (lacking the EVF) but I am excited to try it with adapted M/LTM lenses.

      Far East Survival Hi sorry to hear you sold your Canon and interesting stuff about Sony. I’m sure others reading you comment will be thankful you shared that too. The 28mm unlike the 50s are quite difficult to find, even before my videos haha, and they cost more but keep looking, they are well worth the wait. I’ve not tried the FP as my main interest is film but I use a Voigtlander Bessa L (see video if interested) which sounds like a similar concept. Amazing camera! :)

    Matt, I am a huge fan of everything you do here. I am taking my Leica M10 on a trip to Mexico and everyone says to do portraits I need an 85mm or better. I have a 90 Elmarit 2.8, though I'd rather not take it because of the weight.... I was thinking to shoot portraits with my 50mm Leica lenses, a Summicron f/2 and a little Voigtlander, and with my 35mm 1.4. They all say I will get spatula noses if I shoot portraits that wide... let me just ask, what are your favorite focal lengths for portraits? You may have a video addressing just this concern, and if so. sorry for the redundancy. A lot fo these folks going are using zooms, etc., and so they don't even think of primes really. At any rate, thank you so much for the great work.
