  • Is the Micro Palette by Portable Painter (the baby brother of the Portable Painter"Classic" watercolor palette) a worthy addition to your studio gear? Can a painting palette this small become a fixture in your painting "Go Bag", or should you just "let it go"? Let me show you what I've learned about the power of being small and mighty. Sorry, the giveaway for this micro palette is over. Congratulations to Bruce Osborne of Washington for winning the Micro Palette!

I’m in bed with chronic pain a lot, and these little palettes have been lifesavers. They sit next to my bed along with my pencil case and sketchbooks, and when the whim hits, I’ll just use water from the yeti I always have next to me to drink, or my water pens.
I keep gauche in this micro palette, but with the new little quarter size pans I will be also be setting up a watercolor variety to switch to. For the original, the new paintbrush section pans were perfect to add white gauche and a couple inks to complement my watercolors.
I’m so glad I found these palettes, I’m far more likely to paint now I don’t have to spend spoons to set up for it! They’ve given me back the ability and inspiration to create again, which brings me so much joy. Such well-made clever little inventions!

Hiya Jared! Thanks for the feedback, I'd love to see your demo with this micro palette. I'm still using it when I go out hiking and want to do a quick sketch. All is well with me, hope it is with you too. I see you just uploaded your own video. Time to grab my popcorn and sit back to enjoy it. Merry Christmas!

But I mostly end up watercoloring on my bed. I’ve set it up as a little studio for me because I’m disabled and my bed gives me the comfort my body needs. I love watercolor! Watercolour painting is a pleasure on long trips such as cruises, when time just flies when painting and the scenery and people are ever changing. A great way to hold on to precious memories and far better than a quick photo. The palette looks great for just popping into a day trip bag.

I've enjoyed my Uni-ball waterproof pens too for years; yes, they are the only waterproof pen I've found that's truly waterproof. Love the smoothness of the tips too, with no blotch/globs. Fantastic tips for my future outdoor sketching. I’m new to this medium which I love but still struggle to work by layering ( I’m used to acrylic/oil) 🥵 but each time I get a decent painting I am so proud. I love your Escoda #6 it works so good. I’ll probably get one. My best travel brush is a Raphael but a size too small.
I would definitely have a good use with that small travel palette.

Hey! New subscriber here! It's so weird because I just found a water color set in my shed a few days ago. It was my dad's. I just started oil painting in August 2021 - so very much a rookie. Just got to keep practicing. Any who- I started playing with the water colors. It's so different but like you said in this video - it's so much fun and like no pressure. Just totally different. I'm going to practice both. I know I'm late to the party here but currently my favorite place to paint is in a spare room at home which I call my studio. Makes me feel like a artist! Ha! Hopefully someday! The micro watercolor looks like the perfect motivator to get me outside or at least in my car ( it's cold) to paint. So thanks for the review and I'll look to see where I can buy one of those. Thanks!

Whoops, I’m 1 year too late for the giveaway. 😆I want to get this palette. As of March 2023, there is a 16 well version! What I don’t like about this palette is the shallow, uncovered water container. I can totally see myself spilling the water all over my painting when I’m on-the-go. When I’m outside, I use a covered dipper (for oil painters?) because I can cover the water before detaching it from my sketchbook. You had yours on a flat table so it was easy not to spill the water (but I did hold my breath each time you moved it!) Nice, colorful painting, btw!

thank you so very much for this video --- such wonderful instruction, advice AND .... what a lovely piece you have worked up ...... .... I LOVE THE MUSIC you have chosen for your time-lapse painting @ 9:32 ... would you be able to post the artist and title of this musical piece .... music is VERY INSPIRATIONAL ... thanks again so very much --
my favorite places to paint (there are so many that I cannot choose only one) ... I am fortunate enough to live in a coastal New England region right on a beautiful bay that faces east ... all along this bay there are parks set aside for natural reserves and recreational enjoyment .... I often go to to these locations to paint on the banks of these coastal reagions it is such a blessing to be able to live an a place with so much beauty all around ... as a matter of fact, I just came in from one of these very painting sessions at a beautiful coastal park - the sound of wavelets, birds, and the slight whispering wind as the afternoon faded toward sun-down.
Thanks so much for this vid and for the opportunity to WIN that portable little painter paletter/box ..... sure hope I could be eligible cheers

You're welcome, I'm glad you found it helpful and enjoyed it. The song is called "Living" by Borrtex. I get all of my music through Artlist. 👋
