  • I love this little palette! Can you tell? I've said it about 80 bazillion times. lol
Portable Painter makes the best travel palettes. The classic is perfect for trips where you're going to plein air and you want a bit more paint for the time away. The Micro is great for keeping it in your bag daily for those times where you really want to paint on the go, in a "pinch" sorta situation.

They now have the option of 4 half pans which are quadruple divided, so max of 16 colors. I never wanted only 6 colors but immediately ordered it when I saw I can do 16! The other option is putting a jump ring on the little loop and hanging it around your neck on a lanyard. I crocheted myself one. Portable Painter has also made new pans that fit in the brush slot of the original palette to bring it up to 18. I’ve also done that.

i half expect this portable painter to have a bluetooth connection that lets you know when you're running low on a color. Great review lemi it was super informative and the drawing looks cool!

i think a great idea for the water cup thing would be to put a small sponge or paper towel in there so you can wipe off the color from your paint brush or water pen brush.

I love this micro palette. The mixing space is great for such a small palette. I really enjoy mine. I augmented it with a tiny altoids tin with 5 more colors.

I like how they give you empty pans so if u use paint from like tubes like I do u could take the paint from those too. V nice

I just love your enthusiasm and the fact that you painted something with the palette to review it. Most folks talk about it when what I want to see is how it is used practically. I have both of these abs love to paint when traveling with them! It is so easy to spend time waiting when I have time to kill just have this out of my bag.

I saw someone clip it to their sketchbook using a binder clip but attaching it by the ring so you don’t loose mixing area

DUDE you could use a water brush and use the water cup to hold a towel or rag or whatever to clean it off img

Great review as always, and I appreciate your honesty. I agree the water cup is more an emergency situation deal, but it's nice to have that option. Beautiful portrait too btw!

Fantastic review! :D I got this for Christmas and have been eager to try it out, but haven't had the opportunity to yet x'D But it's nice to hear your thoughts on it. I felt very similar, despite not having used it yet. It does seem like a really great palette, and I do agree that I wouldn't put water in it, it's definitely too shallow, haha. Gorgeous portrait too x3

I love this little palette. By the way, the Daniel Smith essential color set is a perfect set of 6 primaries (warm and cool versions of each) that will fit perfectly in the six pans and let you mix just about every color you wish. Have you put a taller cup/ container that would fit in the large "water compartment". Just thought of that this moment😊 I'm combining those paints and this palette as travel gifts for my WC painting friends! The large classic palette by this company is fabulous too! I love the way that one fits on my knee too. Good thorough review and very nice painting by the way!

They say in their description that the "box" is meant for either water or mixing space. So the ridges are intentionally there to make it more useful for mixing. I usually just have 2 tiny soy sauce cups for water so I use it for mixing, just because it's connected to the palette and I like to have the whole thing in my hand while I paint so I'd definitely just slosh water absolutely everywhere if I tried to keep water in it.
