  • All you'd wanna know about the Etchr Mirror. Is it worth the money? I purchased a cheap mirror so we can compare. Does the cheap mirror outperform the more expensive Etchr mirror? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this purchase? No more lightboxes or transfer/tracing paper ever???

    *Some good questions and some answers for you guys!*
    *C: It's not $35! It's $50!*
    A: Sometimes the website gets buggy and will show the price in AUD (Australian dollars). It's 50 AUD and 35 USD. I spoke with Etchr and they said if you give the website a moment it should automatically adjust the price.
    *Q: About what size can you work up to?*
    A: I would say this heavily depends on the electronic device you are using the app on. If you're working on a tablet you'll be able to use more of your screen and the mirror's "real estate" and get more tracing done in one swoop. I have a droid mini (omfg so small) and it would be pretty painful to make a larger painting with having such a small screen. I would say up to 9x12 would be an ideal size and you could do larger but it depends on your device's size and also the amount of patience you have. Remember folks, different methods of tracing for different tasks. Use what is easiest for the situation!
    *Q: Can you use it left handed?*
    A: Yup, just switch it to the other side.
    *C: Just use the cheap mirror with the app, it's the same thing, just cheaper.*
    A: I broke out my cheap mirror and tried it. The app DOES work with the cheap mirror, but the tracing results are still just as bad with or without the app. It's also still very difficult to see through, not sure if it's simply because it's blue or thicker or a different material or what. You can use the app for 10 free trials, yes, but after that you need to sign up with the code in your Etchr box. HOWEVER! I suppose you could just re-download it over and over? Honestly, not sure why they provide free trials at all.. Another thing fair to mention is that a great selling point of this mirror is the stand, it tilts the screen and the mirror so that you don't have to tilt your head. But yeah, I still felt sick using the cheap mirror, even with the app. :(
    *C: This is a toy, just use a lightbox.*
    A: Can't use a lightbox to trace on dark/black/toned paper. Can't use a lightbox to trace onto canvas, underpainting or not. Can't use a lightbox to transfer onto clothing, shoes, or other items. Really thick paper? I guess you could lightbox that but you won't have great results if the light can't get through.
    I do think that it's important to recognize the strengths of this item and acknowledge them. A lightbox is better at certain things, the mirror is better at others. It's all about picking the right tool for the task. The mirror isn't the end all for all tracing, but then again, neither is the lightbox.

    I recently saw this mirror thing online and wondered if it would be worth the money..I'm glad I came across your video and I'm also glad you were honest about it..I figured it would have its pros and cons like everything,but it sounds like it would work for me and my needs..I might invest in a lightbox later,but for the moment I need something more portable and something that requires less space because I'll be moving soon and I don't need anything extra to pack away..thanks for your honest review,I really appreciate it 😊

    I just heard of this item. There've been a lot of commercials for the Lucy, but I thought I'd try to find a cheaper version that had halfway decent reviews. This looks nice and the price isn't bad. I'm no great artist, but sometimes I'd like to replicate a picture but I've used tracing paper and even scribbling on the back of a page with graphite and then tracing the image, but I like the idea of this way better.

    This is the kind of art product review that should be available for every product. Seriously Lemie, you knocked it out of the park on this one! 10/10 would force all CZcamsrs to research and review products this well (and I SUPER appreciated the comparison with a cheapo brand). Question 1: How large of a drawing can you transfer? the only problem is it seemed limited to a printer page size or less, and my watercolours are often twice that size or more. Question 2: Does it work fine if you are left-handed? Amazing use of the Posca pens and art on black paper too btw! WOW!

    I can really see this being nice for opaque surfaces that you can't use a lightbox with like canvas or black paper. Especially if something you want to copy is not super detailed. Its really hard to see how good this really is in video form though, I know you were not able to get the same alignment as your eye view. It looks like it may be hard to make the artwork not tilted/slanted at all because of the angle of the mirror?

I just kind of take paint and slop it onto the canvas now, but I suppose it’s alright as long as I’m doing something. School has been a lot of tiresome and excessive work. I also have my eye on this girl, but I don’t really know if that’s going anywhere. The only thing good about this is the app but if I recall correctly the app isn't exclusive to the purchase of this doodad. So you could just get the app then use a cheap mirror and achieve the same results. Anything over 10 is too much for this novelty toy.

    • @LemiaCrescent
      @LemiaCrescent  Před 5 lety

      Really great point about the "just use the cheap one with the app and get the same results" thing. SO I BROKE OUT THE CHEAP MIRROR AND THE APP! lol
      I used the cheap mirror with the app, then traced, and I got terrible results. It's on par with the other crappy results of the cheap mirror.
      Did the app work with the mirror? Yes. However, It is still more difficult to see through than the etchr one..I'm guessing the dark blue color isn't helping? It is a thicker plastic material than the Etchr mirror, maybe that also has to do with it. Whatever way you cut it, it's difficult to see through.
      The thing about the app is that you get to use it as a trial 10 times. I suppose you could just delete and re-download the software over and over? I'm not even sure why they give out free trials TBH.
      Another thing is the stand with the etchr mirror is a lot more comfortable because it tilts the mirror/surface. The blue mirror with the upright stand hurts your neck/ and quite frankly made me sick. Not sure if I want to blame the sickness on the blue mirror or the head tilting...or maybe the combination of the two. I'm not sure.
      Whatever way you cut it...the blue mirror is a waste of time/money IMHO. :)

    I kind of worry that this is just going to make tracing traditionally accessible. Like what's stopping a user from loading up the app with art that isn't theirs and tracing it to make it seem genuine or to sell?

    • @kittykreations8968
      @kittykreations8968 Před 5 lety

      People can trace, copy, and steal artwork regardless of the medium. Anyone spending more than $10 on artwork should be smart enough to research the artist and see if their style is consistent etc. If you commission them, look at previous works they've made. Also you can ask for work-in-progress pictures if you're unsure. As an artist, I know there will always be others that cheat to try and benefit off others hard work. I have accepted it and know that most people are not duped anymore by such fakes. There are some very easy ways to find out if they're stealing, like reverse image searching.
