Come to Germany ---- there is soooo much to sketch here. Totally overwhelmed by all the architecture around me. It's good to go with a group (because traveling around with family is a pain --- as they don't have the patience for hunkering down for a bit while you sketch.
I bet there is a lot of medieval architecture!
Germany sounds like it would be a sketcher's dream with all of the wonderful architecture!
I've recently gained interest in line and wash watercolor. Since I am a truck driver most of my off time is at truck stops. The buildings are easy but the truckers intimidating.

Great tutorial! Loose outdoor sketches are so fun, but it takes a surprising amount of effort at first to start drawing loose and to leave details out. And I also agree that it's fun to play around with the colours! Thanks for sharing :)

Being left-handed myself, I had to inwardly chuckle when I heard you address our common problem --- the dreaded ink smearing. I struggle with architecture ---- partly because I avoid it. Which is the wrong thing to do. Practice, practice, practice....and not be so hard on myself.
Sometimes we artists can be the hardest on ourselves. I think one of the greatest gifts we can give ourself is the gift of patience and grace. I always tell myself that if I'm not as good as I want to be and am failing at times, it's because I'm trying new things... and that means I'm growing! Woo Hoo!!

Very nice sketches. I got back into art as a hobby with urban sketchers. I struggle with hitting the right amount of detail - your approach was a good reminder on how/when to make those decisions. I am in the DC area. Hope to hit a USk symposium in a couple of years.

I have never been able to do perspective very well. I can do it if I have a reference photo, and can grid it, but I can't do it without the reference photo. However, I am going to try using your technique to see if it works for me as I really would like to be able to draw from real life rather than from photos. Thanks for making this video and explaining what you are doing so well. I think I've learned a lot. Now to practice what I've learned.

This was such a pleasure to watch! And you've solved a problem/dilemma for me... I'm left handed too and have a terrible time with buildings since so many of my lines end up going off on a angle to the right. I've successfully flopped over more church spires, walls and lamp posts than i care to remember. I've even tried the old lefty trick of turning the paper on an angle but that has its own set of problems.
I watched your hand placement very carefully - pretty much the same as mine - so I have a renewed confidence that I can sort this out. So thanks so much!I think it's time I went back at revisited your other videos, watching for that left hand skill that I clearly missed before.Patricia

Hi Debra, like you I don't live in a big city (but it's probably bigger than yours), but those barns and smaller buildings have such a charm to them that they're irresistable to me even though they seem ordinary to you. Really digging your content man. I loved this. I've been wanting to delve into this a lot more lately along with watercolor and gouache. I spent years only painting and drawing digitally and trying to now move into traditional mediums like watercolor has been a challenge but a lot of fun. One major difference is digitally I have the ability to make so many changes and edits down to completely changing a color to another. Takes a lot more planning ahead with watercolor it seems.
Anyway, great video, great channel, looking forward to more, looking forward to getting out and doing more myself.
Oh, and I think it was your video that got me to pick up some Burma Road Brown for my fountain pen. Beautiful color.
Thanks Levi, I understand your challenge in going from digital to traditional art. One of the reasons I went from traditional airbrushing to digital illustration back in the middle 90's was how quickly I was able to make corrections and changes. A real delight watching you do both of these, and interesting techniques. I have the doodler pen, primarily for writing Pitman's shorthand, which has thin/thick strokes. I am not sure but think it might have been designed for that purpose. Also had been ink reservoir so don't run out in mid-writing! But obviously can be used for anything. Really helpful all your tips about drawing building, something I have often wanted to do but thought was beyond me. Now I might give it a try. So thanks !
It sounds like the perfect pen for sketching. I hope you do try getting out there. If you're a bit shy about it, you can always try it by sitting in your car at first. Happy sketching!
Glad you slowed it down, good information of what we learned in the past but we n e e d a review and to see it with fresh eyes. I think Amsterdam has started. Teoh said he was going so he will have some great videos. When I go out, I stay generally in my car. I just feel more secure when alone. James Gurney has a video on painting in your car which gave me ideas for a set up. My car has a sunroof so it is easy to have air movement in the car. I would like to go to Texas Tech and paint but I am too much of a chicken. Our local artist, Tim Oliver does such a great job with local buildings, farms here and around the state. His work is very special. I dont try to paint for anything other than enjoyment in retirement. Thanks for the video, you always pack them with tips.

Draw Paint Repeat He would really have to adjust to the dry climate. Now that he and his wife have a little girl, too many trips are probably out. As far. As time, it just keeps going faster, I cant believe it is July.

First was talking about the biggest mistake I see aspiring painters make. The second was doing a fountain pen video for artists who want to get into using them, and this was the final version. Good stuff Steve! Important rudimentary info for measuring proportions. Love your combination of colors in the watercolor and especially like your comments about experimenting. "What's the worse that can happen!" YES, exactly. A frequent mantra of mine is, "embrace failure as a teacher." It was one of the concepts that really got me exited about painting and trying new things.
Ooh, I like your mantra! Thanks Steve-O!! Some of my most successful paintings grew out of a need to do something different because the old tried and true wasn't working in the situation I tried it in. From now on I'm gonna hafta call you Mr 100k... at least for a little while, lol!
A much nicer way to layout your work than using a grid. I've always wanted to get my hands on a quill ink pen. I've always inked illustrations with a brush and crow quill... but those refillable pens are really cool. Thanks again for another great video.

We moved to Florida from Wickenburg area so I have had to get used to a completely different landscape.
Hi Susan, of course I'll say STAY SAFE! The landscape will still be there when it clears up (hopefully). Yes, the desert is so different from other landscape, the colors and the plants. I am an avid sketcher whether urban or rural. I live in Germany in a lovely area called the Algäu where there are wonderful little towns and villages with great architecture... ancient old churches and rustic farmhouses. I love it and take off on my bike regularly to sketch. Thanks for this video. It was most informative. I always try to sit with my back to a wall because I don't like people peeping over my shoulder. It is so much better to sketch with a couple of other sketchers . Somehow it makes things so much easier and the reticence seems to disappear miraculously.

Hey Steve. Hope you had a Happy 4th. Thanks for the video. The measuring tip is great and something I don't always remember to do. Love the colors too. I enjoy drawing in ink but haven't found a waterproof ink that is okay to use in a fountain pen. I will be greatly interested in your up coming videos on the subject.
Thanks Karen, I did have a great July 4th! I recorded some of this on the 4th. I hope the sound of fire engines wasn't too loud in the video... I think the neighbor's barn burned down... kidding. So's you don't have to wait, the best waterproof fountain pen ink I've found, by far is Platinum's Carbon Black. 100% waterproof, whereas sometimes, Noodler's bulletproof black can run. Ugh!
Try deAtrementis Document inks. They are waterproof and totally safe for fountain pens. Also lots of colors.

Hi Steve! So nice to come across your channel and I am loving it! I'm now a subscriber. New to sketching and watercolor (since last October). Wondering what pencil you used on the second sketch for the drawing under the ink? It erased so completely at the end, and was not "in the way" during the inking portion, yet still easy to follow. Also, wondering if you prefer the Noodler's Ahab over others for a flex pen, as I am actively looking for one? I love how you explain the nuts and bolts of HOW you draw, what you are looking at and seeing (angles, perspective, etc), how to easily measure, how to simplify, that it's okay to draw through other objects...your entire process. It has helped me to wrap my head around it and has given me added confidence to go out and sketch our world. Thank you for all your time, efforts, and commitment to helping others (myself included!). Your videos are of good quality, easy to watch, and well shot. I also appreciated how you put the reference photo as an inset during the second sketch, and how you moved it from top to bottom when it was going to cover what you were working on at the time. It is attention to details like that that make it easier on us, the viewer, to be able to grasp your teaching without being distracted. ~PamiE
Hi PamiE, yours has to be one of the nicest comments I've gotten here on DPR. Thank you for your kindness =0) It makes me happier than you'll know that I'm making videos that don't just serve my ego, but actually help others on their own artistic journey! We're all just standing on the shoulders of others who've come before us, as the saying goes. To answer your questions... the color pencil I used is the Col-Erase by Prismacolor. I used the orange on this because it was easier to see as I went over it with my violet ink, lol. But really, I pick the color depending on my mood, but it's usually a blue or terra cotta color. As you could see, they're awesome because they erase completely. I like them for sketching too! As for flex nib fountain pens... I do like any of the Noodler's flex nib pens such as Ahab, Konrad, or the Neponset (though that one's pretty spendy). But my favorite pen is the Himalayan from Fountain Pen Revolution (Saffron color is my fave, though I own many other colors). You can order it with a steel ultraflex for an extra $13 if you want maximum line variation, but the regular flex nib for $3 is good too. Let me know how you go when you decide, OK? You give great tips in your videos. I wonder, if you gonna make a little bit more outdoor sketches with just a pen/pencil explaining crosshatching techniques ? Would really love to see some as I'm trying to understand the style that uses crosshatching as shading method/texture impression.
Also, I'd have a question about things like copic markers - when is it good to put those values on lineart/sketch? Is it just to mark major shadows, or also to indicate something else ?

I'm 70 years old and really determined to explore drawing and just discovered your channel. So--- my first dumb question! As I look over drawing supplies and paper, what is the difference between drawing and sketching? I see these being differentiated in pads of paper. I do notice differences in specifications for paper. Thanks.
Hi John, that's a really great question. I'm not sure I know the difference that paper manufacturers make in differentiating drawing and sketching. But in my mind the difference has always been that a sketch is a looser or quicker drawing, and so if you see me say sketch it usually means something I'll do in my sketchbook quickly.
Perhaps paper labeled specifically for "Drawing" vs. "Sketching" has specifications that lend it more toward details, i.e., the "tooth"? (I'm a retired scientist always thinking about the relationship between specifications and functionality. In other words, I'm possessed!) @@SteveAtkinsonFineArt
