  • Newcastle United’s season has been very disappointing for both the fans and the board. Is this down to injures and lack of squad depth? Or does the blame rest mainly on Eddie Howe's shoulders?
    Ayo Akinwolere is joined by The Athletic's ‘Pod On The Tyne’ regulars George Caulkin and Jacob Whitehead to break down where it has gone wrong for The Magpies this season.
    The panel discuss Howe’s huge injury problems, as well as the potential landscape of the club without Dan Ashworth.

    Howe is a very good coach and I like him a lot, but his management style just isn't conducive to the squad overhaul which is needed in a 'project' like this. Howe sees the best in bang average players because he's a coach, and he has faith that he can bring the best out of them, but top managers know when to sell and upgrade. If we want to compete long-term Longstaff, Almiron, Murphy, Targett, Burn, Wilson, Lascelles, Pope etc. should all be sold for FFP purposes and replaced over the next 2 or 3 seasons, but when he's had the opportunity to let players go he hasn't and therefore the 'project' won't move at the pace it should with him in charge. He did unbelievably to get CL but that should've been a launch pad, and it wasn't because of his reluctance to sell players.

There is a minority of fans with unrealistic expectations of the toon and it's always been that way. I remember the section of fans calling for Sir Bobby's head, succesfully. Probably the same fans who hero worship him now and claim he was our best manager ever. Goldfish bowl, the toon and we're at risk of players wanting to leave given how quick we are to turn on the team. Its just a bit of a concerning time to be a newcastle united fan. Last season was such a high, and this season has been a real blow to the confidence. People can talk around it all you want but the facts are…
    1. Confidence in eddie howe has been shaken
    2. Dan ashworth left us for a competitor
    3. Talks are sparking about our best players leaving including bruno and trippier
    4. Some of our best players like botman have looked a shell of themselves since coming back from injury
    It all leaves you wondering what the future holds exactly! We could see next season start without two of our best players, with a new manager, and a new sporting director. Add to that the fact that weve reached somewhat of a ffp cap which means we dont even have much to spend.

    For some of us the doubts and trust in Howe has come not from where we are in the league, but from what was in our control that weve messed up, not what wasnt in our control. Rushing too many players back from bad injuries is totally in our control and poor management, having no tactical plan B to get through key games, not using what subs we have to protect the fitness and fatigue of the small group of players we do have, weve dropped enough points against bottom 6 clubs to be in top 4, and been picked apart in big games tactically too easy. If last season everyone was saying Howe was lucky because we had so few injuries he cant suddenly get a free pass now because of some injuries managing those injuries is whats been missing. The signings in the summer were pants we spent 70m on full backs when our strikers barely manage to play 25 games each. Theres been some proper pr own goals as well like celebrating Tonali learning english whilst banned, isnt he paid 150k a week to do that anyway whilst playing. Howes got 10 games to show he has a plan and that last season wasnt just a fluke. No one wants him gone for rhe sake of it, but he needs to step up and prove his mettle while times are tough and just stop making rookie mistakes week after week this isnt his first managment role is it

    As a fair and balanced NUFC fan i don’t want Howe out today, but he’s definitely had a bad season overall.
    Going for it against Milan and going out of Europe all together, Insisting on playing Trippier when his head wasn’t right, which costs points, playing burn leftback which has cost several results, rushing players back from injury, or playing injured players, and not rotating when he did have the chance. If he doesn’t improve soon, the owners will make a change in the summer i have no doubt about that. 10th of below just isn’t acceptable anymore, no matter the circumstance

    • @Rintrah85
      @Rintrah85 Před měsícem +2

      You'd think we were an established European club the way you're going on. We're still miles behind the big 6 I terms of commercial revenue and we're still at a very early stage of transitioning from the under investment of the Ashley days. I understand Eddie has made some errors but you're way over the top in how much you fault him for. We have no idea what goes on behind closed doors.

    • @Rintrah85
      @Rintrah85 Před měsícem +1

      @Unclebuzzcocksne Not balanced at all. You're blaming him for going for it against Milan. If we'd sat back and were knocked out you'd no doubt be complaining that he hadn't went for it. A fair and balanced view would be recognising that remaining in European competition wasn't just down to that one game. Would be a fairer argument to say that we were unlucky to go out after PSG were gifted by VAR. Suppose that's Eddie's fault too eh? It's not fair and balanced to claim that Trippier's head wasn't right when you don't know that that's true, mere paper talk and there's no evidence that that was the case. Plus, say he wasn't right, do you know more than Eddie about how Trips would respond to being dropped? Doubtful. I don't think Burn has cost us as many results as people like to make out, failing to point to the assists and space he creates on set pieces as well as the massive tackle and aerial win ratios he produces. Moreover, Burn is the same player as last year playing in the same position. The difference is we haven't had Joel or Willock with the legs to support Burn against faster right wingers. So again, not fair and balanced. It's also not fair and balanced to claim that we've played injured players unless you are part of the backroom staff, which, of course, you're not. The last point is slightly more fair...i do think recent games Eddie could have rotated a few players out now that we have players returning from injury. However, as fans we can't know how these players look in training. I would rather see Miley or Anderson instead of Longstaff right now though and it is weird that Sean has kept his place despite being injured.
