  • On Saturday Real Madrid were confirmed as La Liga champions for a record-extending 36th time, following Barcelona's 4-2 defeat at Girona. So how did they do it, why was this title not as easy as it looked and can anyone stop Real Madrid being European football’s dominant force?
    Ayo Akinwolere is joined by The Athletic's Madrid-based writer Dermot Corrigan and Junior Spanish Editor Tomas Hill Lopez-Menchero to analyse how Carlo Ancelotti's side have managed to write their own page in Madrid's illustrious history.

    23:27 Are you saying Real Madrid don't share enough? What do you want them to share? The extra money the club will get from its new stadium? Did La Liga or any other team help Real Madrid finance the €1 billion debt it incurred? Of course not... We are talking about a fiscally responsible club, surrounded by a family of short-sighted and impulsive clubs, especially Barcelona. On top of that, this year we learned that Barcelona paid literally millions to the vice-president of the referees for the last 20 years....
    I guess the La Liga clubs at least show pure respect and sportsmanship towards the only club that brings something of relevance to La Liga, right? At least they appreciate the opportunity to play Vinicius Jr, top Ballon d'Or contender?
    I suppose Real Madrid could give away some of their resources to Valencia and Atletico: financially irresponsible and impulsive clubs, but truly respectful and honourable when they play Madrid, right?

    2:39 lack of a challenge is nonsense. every team in spain wants to beat real madrid and 9 times out of 10 away from home it's a real battle. some home games can be the same. Alaves, Mallorca, and of course Barsa away are 3 that I remember right away. Sevilla home and away was tough to get a point. Valencia away, coming back from 2 down for a point when it should have been 3, betis away was another tough match as always. There are few easy away games for Real Madrid. And it wasn't just the long term injuries - Vini, Jude, Tchouameni, Camavinga, Carvajal, Mendy all had significant spells out injured. Not to forget Arda Guler - he'd have been able to play a bigger part if he hadn't required knee surgery.

      PS I think the whole "man manager" thing is only one aspect of his management (like Klopp, but his other attributes are more subtle).
      Look at the cohesion of his teams - everyone playing to the best of their abilities and on the same page.
      Look at Everton before & after, never mind any of his other top teams.
      Yes he doesn't have "a style" because he creates one that is best suited for whatever squad he has.
      If you think he's not teaching tactics and positions, well there's plenty of teams under other managers that have looked like 11 strangers - that's what happens at the top level if you just let players go out and enjoy themselves; they're not going to adapt to each and every team they play like his do, when his teams need to

    Luka Modric might be renewed it seems as he wants it. Kroos is staying. Nacho is leaving. As for who Real Madrid might sell the answer is probably Ceballos and not extend Joselu. Or they might extend Joselu and keep Ceballos too as well as extending Mendy. There is no need to sell anyone for now. 2-3 years down the line if someone wants to leave they will be let go of.

    • @DAAllan82
      @DAAllan82 Před 11 dny

      Most reports indicate Joselu will stay. I think that is a good decision. He brings experience and a skill set not possessed by the youngsters. Ceballos will be sold for sure.
