  • The 2022 Santa Cruz Chameleon MX is here. In this video we take a first look at Santa Cruz's modern take on the trail hardtail. 25 years in the making, this chameleon has some up-to-date touches: 65* hta, adjustable dropouts to be run singlespeed or geared, 29er or MX wheelsize, threaded bb, ISCG tabs, 130mm travel with a Fox 34, SRAM UDH, bottle bosses on the top and bottom of the downtube, and the trusty aluminum frame we've all come to love.

    I like seeing some colors again. That trend with washed out and pale matte frames never sat well with me. Even the 5010 got some flair to it with the mustard yellow. Love it.

    A few more thoughts:
    Thanks to all the great people commenting, I've learned the front axle can be adjusted by putting an Allen key on the lever side. Glad to hear it, that's even easier than the old one.
    Also, I'm told the yellow ones are shipping to your dealers now, so they should hit bike shop floors soon. Blue ones won't be far behind.
    Yes, it's expensive. You can find other hardtails with better parts for cheaper. However, the previous chameleon was more expensive than it's competition, but it blew those bikes away. A special frame is worth an extra $500-1000 to me. The jury is still out on whether this is a special frame or not, but don't write it off yet just based on price.
    I feel like this video is more relevant than ever: czcams.com/video/8iDEG6ibAg8/video.html&ab_channel=hardtailparty

    The Chameleon has been one of the bikes that I hope to own day day, I always liked the blue color.
    As far as bar width and reach, I spent some time using graph paper using scale measurements to determine what stem length and bar width I could go to without going too far. I ride a Trek Roscoe 8 and swapped to a 780mm wide bar and a 40mm stem and if my calculations are correct, my reach from the seat to grips only went up 10mm+/-. It definitely made turning those 2.8's much easier in the rough.

I bought my 2021 Chameleon R in Raspberry Sorbet n Grey, July 2021 and freakin love it!! Like Steve alluded, the Gen. 7 is no obsolete dinosaur quite yet. Such a fun, versatile, and absolutely beautiful bike. Has a unique, pink hue in full light and a deeper red in low light. Gets lots of compliments. Ride it daily on our 700+ miles of trails near Tallahassee and it’s already gotten pretty rowdy in Pisgah and DuPont. Fun on the local pump track. Santos and CO are next. Yes, I will habe smaller manufacturers featured soon, but not form those two. I've reached out to them a handful of times but no luck.

Not sure im sold on mullets yet but since i have an existing 29 with Gx groupset i figured i got nothing to lose if i go this direction as i could always swap in my 29ner. As usual, Santa Cruz has ridiculously high pricing compared to similar bikes from other brands.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  Před 2 lety +15

      Yes, but a bike is so much more than the spec for the price. I'd also argue that some companies offer far more features than others. For example, Santa Cruz offers lifetime free bearing replacement on their FS bikes, lifetime warranties, they stock replacement parts for YEARS for each of their models. You definitely pay more for these high-end frames, and I agree that this bike is pricier than its competition, but I'm also a huge believer in buying a bike with the right frame first, not the right groupset. I'd rather have this bike than two commencal meta HT AMs

      @@hardtailparty Fair enough. I just don't think I could ever justify spending that much on a hardtail with those specs. Personally, I think I'll stick with bikes such as Kona's Honzo line.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  Před 2 lety +2

      @@newenglandskier13 That's fair. The last chameleon was noticeably overpriced compared to its competition, but it was one of the few cases where I thought it was completely worth it for the price. That bike was special. All that said, there are some incredible bikes at far less money these days.

      @thomasmcdermott8858 Před 2 lety +1

      The thing is they hold their value better than other brands, in my experience. Like, since 2012 I've gone through 3 frames. A new factory blemish 2012 Tallboy 1 CC ($1500, sold for $1070), used 2015 Tallboy 2 CC ($1390, sold for $950), and a 2016 Hightower 1 CC ($900, current bike). That's $1770 I have into SC frames over 9 years, and I could sell the Hightower frame today for that much, so literally 9 years of top-notch carbon frame ownership for free. Maybe I'm just good at buying low and selling high, but the reality is the used market for Santa Cruz frames is and always has been very strong.

    You can rotate the lever on the front axle by turning the hex end of the axle. Ive got a fox 34 on my bike, which I got early this year, and that was how I had to adjust the axle.

    Lol. I just did that with my rear non drive end cap when I got new ICAN F945's. There was play, the rotor kept rubbing, etc. The rotor bolts were rubbing the stranglehold dropout. Somebody in the Stache group pointed out that I might be missing an end cap. Luckily, I did not throw that insert away and found it still attached 🤣🤣🤣

    We can get those Fox Rhythm forks eventually here in Argentina. As we have a non-stop inflation and it gets harder to buy stuff, some bike shops usually end up downgrading the forks on their bikes to make them cheaper and then they get the chance to sell Fox Rhythm forks separately for a great price as well. That's how i got my Rhythm 34 for my Santa Cruz Highball custom build. Great win win situation if you ask me...
