    *Hot take:* More brands should offer their entry/value tier HTs as frame options. A lot of people would love to move parts over from an older bike or just like building their bikes but don't want/need a $800+ USD frame.

    • @letour32rr
      @letour32rr Před 2 lety +3

      Yup. Building up a entry level Rockhopper up with the Rockshox Judy, XT 1x11, SLX brakes, and Carbon wheels. The go was exactly what I wanted and the whole bike was $500, so cheaper than most frames.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  Před 2 lety +11

      Agreed! I wish more companies would put modern geo and modern standards on their entry level hardtails. Most entry levels still have QRs.

    • @letour32rr
      @letour32rr Před 2 lety +3

      @@hardtailparty I honestly don’t mind 135qr. Even being a big guy, I’ve been riding MTB’s for over 25 years and have never had an issue with qr axles, especially for XC/Trail.
      Also, I think that companies are finally hitting the Geo sweet spot for new riders on entry level bikes. 67-68.5 degree HT angles offer just the right mix of Handlebar/Lean turning that riders of both styles can enjoy the frame. That also allows new riders to learn to lean more, but not force them into it.
      The new entry Rockhopper geo suits this, but best would probably be the Marin Team Marin’s. Great bike, just wish the frame was a bit cheaper.
      At least most entry level bikes come with a 44mm head tube so they can be upgraded to a Tapered fork with a EC44 lower headset cup. It’ll change the geo about .5 degrees and increase stack by 12mm, but not too bad.

    Hey Steve, nice review. I was one of those ‘overfork for stack guys!’ I ran a 150 pike with just enough tokens to make the last 20-30mm ‘emergency only’
    With most really cutting edge, slacker and longer bikes, I find that a lower stack 120mm fork doesn’t worry me anymore, I no longer feel like a low stack equals road bike feel off road!
    I can confirm that the UK has plenty of steep (often slippery!) stuff. Seat angle here is a bit of a mystery. Don’t forget the Pipedream Sirius is a UK bike with a super steep seat tube angle.
    Maybe they still think ‘hang off the back’ for attacking downhill? I don’t know who leads their development these days, but I’ve even seen a GMB presenter run the mega avalanche on the 2nd gen scout here on CZcams.

  • @NoCoBG
    @NoCoBG Před 2 lety

    I love the videos Steve. You should cover effective top tube length and what it means for sizing if you do a lot of seated pedaling. You hint that this bike may be too long despite the conservative reach. I'm the same height as you but with a short torso and arms. I've found that my preferred range for effective top tube length is 545-560 mm with a 40-50 mm stem. I can handle 580 mm with a 35 mm stem, but my body doesn't like this on rides longer than about 25 miles. I like this frame, but even the size small 27.5 version has an effective top tube close to 600 mm. I'm glad that there are now many hardtail frame options with slack head tube angles, but they are getting too long for me to comfortably ride. The size small Santa Cruz Chameleon has the same issue. I'm in Colorado, so there are lots of long seated climbs. I also pedal to the trailhead most days. I can see how I might not be as affected by the longer effective top tube if I only rode rolling terrain where I didn't spend much time in the saddle, but that's not my reality.

There is 3 parts over the span of quite a few years, really really great hardtail movie, highly recommended! Would love to see your thoughts on a comparison between short and long travel fork setup on this bike mateas a lot of us in the UK like to run bigger travel 150minimum upto 170 is actually quite common, Blake Samson's scout is setup with 170mm and Elliot Heap Nukeproof team rider also had is at 170!

    The gen3 dropper routing is much improved from Gen2 (which I built up for my wife) which comes out the bottom of the down tube, and loops externally under the BB. Who thought that was a good idea?? Coincidentally it is now almost exactly like the Ragley Marley frame (which I built up for one of my kids). Not a coincidence since CRC/Wiggle own both brands…. But really, I’m struggling to see the distinction between the frames/brands.

    Geo seems close to perfect. I personally don’t want a hardtail with seat angle much steeper than 75, but a full suspension could probably be 80 and be fine. I also think a trail hardtail should be setup with 140mm or less and 65 or less head angle.

    It just strikes me time and time again these days, that every time I see a frame with some poppy colors I just feel joy. I feel the whole bike scene have been flooded with dark muddy colors for so long now that you almost forget other colors exist too.
    Well, other things like cars as well have gotten pretty sad and boring color options for a long while too so these trends has got to go. I got no problem that the color grey exist, but when one car had 4 color options and all 4 are just different shades of grey, you know you're getting screwed.
    Bring colors back. That'll be all.
