A few more thoughts...
I'm 5'6" , 175lbs with short legs and a long torso. I like long reach bikes. This is a size med
1) watch the entire video, there's a lot of great info sprinkled throughout.
2) these burgtech bars are STIFF
3) this bike was announced a week ago. Bike launches often happen before models hit your dealership floors. These are shipping to dealers now, so you should start seeing them soon.
4) Who is this bike for? In my opinion, this bike is for people who don't feel like 140+mm of travel is better. This bike is for people who CHARGE the trail. Sure you can mosey on it, but it really comes alive when you attack the trail. This is best suited for aggressive riders and people who are going to push traction to the limit. I feel this bike is best suited for blue trails, and back diamond trails. It lost a little of it's fun on green trails that the previous model had. The previous one was better at pump tracks, popping off stuff, jumps, and bikepacking. This bike wants to plow and charge more than the last one.
5) Who is this bike NOT for? Its not for bargain basement shopers. It's not for people looking for a lightweight xc machine. It's not amazing for people who just want to sit and spin xc-like and turn with the bars like we did in the 90s. It's not for people who are coming off a 10 year old bike and they don't want to adapt their riding technique to suit the newer geometry. This is a modern bike and really does respond well to modern riding technique. In the MX format, it wouldn't be my first choice as a bikepacking rig.
6)This bike is one of the more expensive aluminum hardtails out there. This bike isn't for the bargain shopper who wants the best component spec for the price. This bike is for someone who is willing to pay a bit more for that special sauce in the ride feel, for the Santa Cruz name, for the lifetime warranty and exceptional parts support and dealer support, and for the geometry and way it handles. While it's more expensive than direct to consumer bikes, i feel like this bike is far more than the sum of its components, especially when you consider it's versatility. Is it a bargain? No. Is it worth the extra price? That's up to you, but i think so.
7) i feel like between the R and S builds, there isn't a clear winner for value. They're priced pretty cimparitovely to each other. One huge benefit of the S build is that it had a dt370 hub (yuck) that can be retrofitted to eventually accept a 54t ratchet for better engagement. The S build also ha sa nicer fork, brakes, and drivetrain.

9) Moab doesn't have a lot of hardtail-friendly trails, but i wanted to push this bike to see what it's capable of.
10) this bike is an aluminum hardtail. It's not supple. It's still a ahrdtail and you feel all those bumos. It is, however, more comfortable than a lot of other aluminum bikes like the connencal meta, the alloy Kona honzo, the specialized fuse, and most other alloy hardtails. I feel like the ragley big Al, and the banshee paradox are a step softer than this, but i was surprised the chameleon wasn't more harsh.
11) when adjusting the dropouts, make sure to adjust each side a little at a time when the wheel is in there. The dropout design doesn't causes the bolts to turn sideways when one dropout is skid back more than the other. I love the dropout design, it saves at least half a pound over other sliding dropouts, you just have to treat it a little differently.
12) Stay tuned for more comparisons and experimenting once i get a set of 29er dropouts for it. I have a feeling I'm going to love it even more as a 29er, especially for bikeacking and more mellow trail days.
What's the difference between the dropouts? I suppose the 29er dropouts put the wheel a little higher?
@@endianAphones the dropouts preserve the same geo between wheel sizes. One of the few bikes to ever do this.

I think you put it in the right perspective. I love 21 Chameleon for my local flat stuff. But seeing the Geo change, I think it would be too slack for the XC I do, and not enough travel for the DH type stuff I end up doing with my Bigwig.

Appreciate the comparison to the last chameleon, really liked that bike for how versatile it was. Could make it down almost everything I can on a full sus but it was still lively on mellower trails.
I've since moved on to a '21 Chisel as I wanted something faster and lighter. These slacked out hardtails don't appeal to me as if I'm riding steeper chunkier terrain, I'd rather be on my full sus they are easier on the joints/body. The Chisel is great for mellower stuff and is surprisingly capable with a 120mm 34 and dropper. That said I'm gonna experiment with dropping the fork down to 110mm and a -1 headset (shoutout to spesh for using a ZS headset)
The best upgrade on my hardtail was installing the PNW Coast dropper. It is the ONLY dropper with 40mm of air suspension. It saved my lower back.
I love what they did with this bike. I Iike the option to switch the rear wheel size. I agree about the cable routing too. Give me external routing any day.
Great video! Dan and I rode Captain Ahab on Saturday and it was a blast! Sorry we missed you.. We were racing the sun so we didn't session things and clear everything but it was amazing. I got a flat from a rim strike and you were right about those darts. We were back on the trail after 3-5 minutes.
Awesome. Several years back I decided i would clean the entire trail, and it forever changed that trail for me.
The bike looks great but that trail is something else! You got some great footage of an amazing trail on a beautiful day.

Awesome review! I bought my 2021 AL Chameleon because of the original Chameleon review. Seeing this, I don't have as much FOMO since I still ride green and blue trails in Norcal and occasional visits to the skills park/pump track. Definitely a long-awaited update, but you wasted no time on the review. Keep it up Steve!

While going though the process of replacing my main hardtail I eventually got it down to two. I was on-the-fence for almost a week about THIS bike or the Honzo. Honestly it was really the test rides that convinced me, but your reviews on the 2022 Chameleon DID indeed help me make up my mind--or at least inspire me to just not wait anymore. I ended up w/the "AL R" build full 29er (XL) and after taking a few quick-rides on this monster my love and faith for hardtails is totally renewed! I really mean that. This bike is the sickest HT ride I think I've ever been on. Without the "feeling" when you ride over something w/o rear suspension, this thing _seriously feels_ like a FS bike when you're on a flat or smoother surface. It has a little bit of small bump plush to it's glide and ride, and the FOX forks are really nice even though I typically like Rockshox up front and FOX rear shocks. NO problem here, these forks are as nice as you've claimed in your reviews. You nailed it bro.
For as slack as these things looks, both in pic's and by the geo', the stays are short enough to make it feel poppy when you want it too. When you ride it "planted" and let your weight sink the center of gravity it really digs in and feels super solid. As soon as you get up and shift your weight to where you want, it agrees with you that it's time to move and never feels off-balance (like there's an imaginary anchor tethering you to the BB center of gravity). This is EXACTLY what I was looking for in a fully capable hardtail. I basically wanted the "experience" of my Stumpy but in a hardtail that would pedal and enjoy the paths in New England, dirt rail trails, and fire road trails. I'm convinced I could take this Chameleon almost anywhere that Stumpjumper would go--no exaggeration. I'm so impressed with this bike that it doesn't hurt as much when I think of what it cost. Even IF this was available in carbon, and I could spring for that extra cost, I wouldn't want it in carbon. When you're rockin' this thing you can't tell. I might like carbon rims on this, but I'm 100% satisfied as it is, which includes the minor upgrades I do to customize the fit.
Once you test ride this thing it makes the other HTs in its price range seem like they're missing something. Thanks a million though for your thorough, accurate, and honest reviews about this bike. That's even more evidence in support of your expertise. Best hardtail videos bar none.

I thought I was going to say "I LOVE THIS BIKE" and run out and get one. Based on the review, my 2018 Chameleon is staying with me (160mm coil, mullet, SS). Same basic head angle, seat angle means nothing (who sits on a SS???) but the playful nature of the previous model is what I love about it. Having said that, I do still want to try this to see if it has a place as a geared hardtail down the road.
Great review. Ended up going with the Chameleon over the Roscoe. Moving up from a Marin Bobcat. I’m excited to progress!

I've watched a bunch of your videos as I'm considering swapping out my 2008 Yeti ASR 26 for a hardtail. One thing I noticed in this video is how this bike sounds. When you're dropping a ledge or landing a jump the bike sounds more put together and solid. There's not a lot of extra noise. The tires hit, absorb, and off you go. Great review, thanks
That's the beauty of plus tires. Also, I wear a microphone on my chest, so it picks me up more than the bike. But this is a very smooth and quiet bike.

I just purchased this bike and i switched the back 27.5 for 29 inch wheels, its really nice to have both options because one might be better than the other in different scenarios
You sound pretty happy with the new Chameleon! Sounds like it's maybe not right for Boise xc trails, but then again is super versatile.
The bike service is worth it. He spends the time to interact one on one through several emails to understand what you need and narrow down the choices to what will be best for you. Saves a lot of time and a lot of money(by avoiding buying the wrong bike).

I haven't been able to convince chumba to send in a frame. I'd love to one day. I've ridden a sendero in a parking lot for a few pedals, but not enough to get a feel for it

Do you need the 29er dropouts to ride it with a 29 rear wheel? The dropouts for v7 were so difficult to get from Santa Cruz that everyone just changed wheels or ran single speed without swapping the dropouts. The difference in axle and BB height were minimal. Once again great review!
On the V7 i never bothered with swapping dropouts when i swapped tires, but on this model i want to try the correct dropouts.

I wonder how it compares to the 2021 Orbea Laufey. The geo on paper is very similar.

This is very interesting. I am in the market for a single speed and am leaning towards the spot rocker for that application. I typically ride a race geometry with a long top tube. I am currently riding the Lynskey Pro 29er. I love that you love this bike. can you speculate what it would be like as a ss? I have ridden the rocker and am just wondering how it would compare. You have said that the rocker is your favorite ss. do you think that is still the case? also, since it was a 9,5 for descending, do you think there is potential for it to help with my technical skills?
Sick on the Gatekeeper entrance move, and cleaning those tricky climbs! That chute you cleaned at 9:06, with a bit of stutter pedaling was sick bro!!! Steve, is that the chest mount you're wearing? I'm looking at this bike along with other hard tails on the list (Canyon Stoic, RM Growler, Trek Roscoe, Vitus something or other, Nuke Proof Reactor, Marin San Quentin or Marin Team Marin2 - because it has some trail geo.) The Kona Honzo was on the list but I went and looked at one and it's surprisingly heavy, even if it had tubes in it - not sure if it's the frame, or componentry, apparently doesn't come with good brakes and you have to run not very good pads, and the rear hub isn't a boost hub, so the regular 2022 Honzo isn't on the list anymore. That being said the geo on the Honzo is good. I hope you would test the new Chameleon with 29 wheels, in addition to the MX.
Looks like can get a better hub by upgrading to the R or S builds: DT Swiss 370, 12x148, XD, 28h or E13 SL, 12x148, XD, 28h - or were you already testing that version?
Been waiting for this. Thinking the last version probably suits my moderate riding and central Illinois trails better than this. Now to get the wife on board and hope everyone goes and buys this new version so there's lots of newer used ones to choose from!

@@drujenssen5444 it's got sliding dropouts, so I don't think UDH is an option, though I'll see if I can work that in.

Any thoughts compared to Salsa Timberjack? I know liked the Salsa when in mullet mode, so curious how they compare.
I commented on your last video, and just watched your review here. After talking to my lbs about our local trails, and thinking about where I usually ride, I'm going ahead with getting the 29er.
I know it's not as xc oriented as the last model, but I think it will be okay since my local stuff is more undulating than flat (and our city is building a bike park!) and the odd race is more about seeing new trails and meeting people for me than about competition. In either case, it will be worth trying something radically different to what I'm used to!
Keep us posted what you think of it. This bike really has to be ridden aggressively to come alive. Don't hold back on it. :)

Interesting. I’d love to see you check back in with the Paradox and see how it stacks up with everything that’s come out and been tested over the last year. I’ve always had one eye on the Chameleon but can’t decide which way to go.

Left Moab a couple weeks ago and did the Navajo rocks loop which for my budget hardtail is maybe pushing it a bit but it was a fantastic trail having a bit of everything with slick rock ,tech up and down and some flow .
That's such a fun trail. I rode it last week on my rigid ss klunker. Video coming soon.

That's a tough one. Definitely easier with a 29er rear wheel
The S build has Dr swiss 370 hubs vs SRAM hubs on the D and R. Hopefully it's the SRAM hubs you don't like so one can just S spec out of this defect. Changing the hub seems to be labor intensive. Maybe $50 plus?

While I appreciate the prestige, warranty and technical support from Santa Cruz; when you compare the asking price for the Chameleon R 29 (£3000) or D 29 (£2400), with the Ragley Big Al 1.0 (£1400) it's a lot to take in. Not saying it won't be worth it... but it's a big ask.
Yes, it's a lot of money for an nx aluminum hardtail. One other thing to consider is resale value. It's kind of like a Tacoma. Far more money than a Chevy Colorado, but when you go to sell it you get most of it back.
The big Al is a fantastic value. We're also comparing a direct to consumer price to a dealership model.

In the UK Ragley are a dealership brand, my two LBS do Ragley and Santa Cruz. Spoilt for choice...

No idea on frame weight. I'd have to completely disassemble the brake hoses to strip them to get a weight and I'm not willing to do that. I've heard rumors of Santa Cruz posting weight numbers online somewhere.

The S build has a 370 DT rear hub. It has pawls but you can convert the inside to a 350 ratchet setup. It takes a special puller and a huge amount of leverage.
Correct, but it can be swapped. Dt was swapping them at sea otter all week. It's not ideal, but it's better than having to lace an entirely new hub up.
Don't forget to try it with your XC 29er wheels and maybe a 120 mm fork! Just don't use those older, thin Schwalbe tires... 😏

How would you compare this to the current salsa Timberjack?
Looks like this bike might be the closest thing to a Paradox but with sliding dropouts. About the same price for the frame too.

I know you are a big fan of the 130mm and it's cool to see you riding it all the chunky stuff. My first and only hardtail is the meta ht with 160mm fork. I do decent size drops jumps so I always thought the 160mm was more of a benefit for me. Do you find the 130mm can still handle some bigger drops like 8-10ft? This bike looks sick so just wanted to see what you thought!
To optimize a hardtail for lots of slow speed drops and huck to flsts, big travel makes more sense (and full sus makes even more sense). However, you'll pay a price for regular trail riding with the dive and geo changes of a big fork. That said, I'd have no issues hitting 10 foot drops on a 130mm fork, provided it had a good steep downhi landing (like dth in Bentonville)

Test rode one of these yesterday. XL frame. Geometry just didn't feel right, I'm 6'3". Cockpit felt a bit cramped. It is a beautiful frame, a work of art.
You're 190cms, & the 490mm Reach of the XL felt "cramped"? That's interesting, 490cms Reach would normally be on the high side for someone your height;
maybe you have a super long torso & short legs?
I'm curious to learn from other people's first hand experiences as it is impossible to swing over a leg on this bike where I live; thanks in advance for any info you might share.
