I had worked IT for a stock brokerage, and the main concern is preventing loss of data. Every system is designed to fail safe against it. Backups are off site, mirror systems halfway across the country and redundant servers so taking one offline for maintenance does not stop operations. Deliberately deleting data required an organized effort and I imagine it's the same with cloud storage as the potential law suits over lost family photos would ruin a company. Naturally the first thing I do when getting a new computer is disable cloud storage and make my own backups. Investing in a RAID array is also recommended.

Especially with stuff like AWS and the like - the fees and accounting could basically be their own job function, including "fun" surprises like failed requests against your S3 bucket racking up a $1000 bill. There's some good use of the cloud and off-site hosted stuff in a business context since you can cover your butt with a data processing agreement and it can reduce workload (especially for small teams) but definitely at the cost of paying extra to have someone else handle it.
For personal use self-hosted is absolutely the way to go - it's still some extra work, but technologies like containers have greatly improved accessibility and in general require less low-level knowledge.

My first computer was an 8088. I've had a 286, a 386, a 486, and a true Pentium 100 that should not have been able to run the programs that it ran. All of those except the 8088 were home built.
I did conclude quite a while back that MS thinks that they own your media; specifically, the xbox (in all its interations) and your PC, no matter what brand it happens to be.
When I worked for the Department of Defense, Depart of the the Navy, those were enterprise computers and computer networks. They were all interchangeable as far as the PC or laptops, the firmware and software.
Everyone got the same upgrades and the same programs. There were exceptions, mainly on a case-by-case basis, and each exception had to be elevated to higher levels to provide for exceptions.
Different competencies were allowed to have programs that other competencies were not. For example, Science and Technology users had programs available to them that Logisticians were not, and so on throughout the entire enterprise.
All that was what led me to believe that the money I spent on my xboxes and on my PCs were merely the cost of entry into the Microsoft world-wide enterprise.

the 20th century was a series of lessons on why not to trust governments with unlimited power and why we should resist intrusions on our perosnal lives and we have as a species utterly failed to learn those lessons. Obviously the government needs to stop turning a blind eye to what the companies are doing, but privately owned companies acting like authoritarian governments is the problem.
What you're saying is a contradiction. Lawmakers outlawing that behavior would involve a more powerful government willing to actually criminally prosecute big tech companies. As far as I know, there are files on your device and references in a database for the apps to use. If you delete a photo, it first gets removed from the database and then from the device. If something happens in between, the reference is lost and the photo not shown, but still on the device. The update may have rescanned the files and added them back to the database.
This is clearly an implementation error. First the file has to be deleted, then the database entry and the database should notice if there's a reference to a non existing file and cleans itself up after such an error occurs.

I think the whole reason it's not deleted right away is for a form of backup. So in case you accidentally delete something, you can get it back within the time period before they actually delete it.
I remember google keeps deleted email messages for up to 30 days before really deleting them. All so in case you deleted an email message that you now want to get back, and it's within the 30 day period, you can get it back.
So my take from this is as Louis said, the schedule for the 30 day period where it was supposed to be deleted, never occurred with some pictures and video due to a software bug or an error with the software's configuration.

But considering the fact that some people say (on LTT wan show someone said something simmilar) that they got their deleted photos back even when they didn't used apple cloud storage to store data; It might be that some bug happened on their device with something like this backup you say (I mean, when you delete photo, at least on some android devices, you can click button to revert what you just did) that caused photos to not be deleted and othe bug showed these photos again in gallery after recent update to ios.

@@phlodel I think that would mean the doctor thus must ensure that his communication with the patient is done over a medium that can guarantee that privacy and nothing else. That said, I won't beat him up over using Google: if it's an emergency and there's no other viable option - you then stand between using what you have or refusing to treat a sick child...
Besides, these corpos gloat about how they respect and protect your privacy and how "your privacy is of utmost importance to us". Repeat it enough times and people might start to believe you...

@@phlodelthe picture had to exist chronologically before it was sent to the doctor. that's where this problem arose (iirc). the doctor wasn't involved, save for requesting the picture. pictures don't carry context on their own. they judged the picture without context, deciding it was their right and obligation to do so.
it's like they're sitting in your house watching you at all times, you start to get your kid ready for a bath and they're going to call the police on you. they don't judge context, they just pretend everything is the worst situation it could possibly be. don't let them into your house, and don't let them access to your children.

My local electronics repair place is run by a guy with whom I'm on a first name basis. He goes to church with my parents. I recently gave his daughter a congratulatory gift for her graduation. I 100% trust him and his small group of employees more than I trust any corporation, and even if there *were* to ever be some issue, it's not like I wouldn't know where to find the responsible party. Personal responsibility and accountability are wonderful things, but unfortunately sorely lacking in many critical sectors of modern society

It's all big tech... ATT voicemails... they live FOREVER.
Honestly, it's the NSA and other 3 letter agencies - they want all the big tech to keep these things forever so that they can grab them later. Fellow travelers working for these big tech companies let them in.

Oh I would love to listen to some of my old voicemails lol specifically one from 17 years ago when my boss was ripping me a new one. It wasn’t a voicemail it was a call. Probably counts for calls too though.
