- This video is more of a case study explaining the thought process & showing how we went through diagnosing this vehicle. Temperature can play a key role in diagnostics, and this video will show you why. I thought it may be helpful to someone trying to learn strategy based diagnostics and how not to get burned by jumping to conclusions. Thanks for watching.

I really like this style of video. I like the walk through and breakdown of each step. I see this very useful for those who haven't quite mastered a diagnostic procedure or for even those who want additional ideas.
Thanks for your thought process. That's why you are a successful business man. Happy 2020, Joe.
Told you that technique is gold.
Great video Joe. Well played brother.
Temperature always played a role for me in diagnostics, but the choke tester is a great thing to have man. I love that tool. Finally had a chance to actually use it in a video. I think someone needs to start making videos on these subjects ...won't mention names or anything...
@@JoesAutoElectric I hear ya. I do.
I'm getting there.
You'll be the first to know when do.
Great Simple Video ! Thanks Joe may you have a safe prosperous New Year ! may all your fixes be easy ones !!!
Great video Joe! A solid diagnostic approach is key! Especially having a routine to it! Thanks for sharing! Great video!
You make a good point "the customer explains the issue as best they can". That's important because the description depends on the experience of the owner. When my wife has a complaint about her car nothing she says makes sense to me because she hasn't a clue of mechanical systems. I have to ask many questions before her and I are on the same page. I have said this on other channels and that is I think hearing your process of how you approach a complaint is just as important as how you fixed it.
Thank you Joe. Good job. Have a blessed and safe New Year to you and your family.
That was a really good vid!! I like the clear proof of temperature affecting the injector circuit. Thank u very much!!
Thank you! Yes, nothing like seeing it fail and come back right?
I just learned a knew trick. Thanks Joe! Great video.
Thank you Joe. I am always trying to learn more on engine and transmission diagnostics. I do not comment all the time but I am a devout follower of your channel. Richards "Mobile" Auto and Air
Thanks Richard.
Joe, first Happy New Year to you and Family. I personally know parts can be affected by hot and cold but this is the first time I have seen it done this way. Excellent thank you for showing. Really want to thank you for showing the process from thought to actually performing it in real time. Once again Happy New Year and hope it's a safe and healthy one for your family Artie ❤️🇺🇸
Thank you sir. trying something different with the videos.
Great job my friend very cool test.keep up the good work and happy new year joe lots of love to you and your family👍.
Your buddy was right, excellent video. As a DIY, I like to see different ways to attack common problems on a car. Joe , you are definitely top 5 internet source for auto troubleshooting.
Thank you!
Absolutely great diagnosis vid...
Great approach,diag and fix 👍
Joe, Out standing diagnoses it is always great reassurance when you can test the part out in the car and know beyond a doubt that you are correct , I say that because some times you get a brand new part that is defective , and if your process is not air tight . You start pulling your hair out and going in circles , Thank you for taking the time to make these videos Pete M
Great diag. Like that choke tool. Smart way to diag
Good info here Joe. Thanks for sharing man. 👍
Great find Joe. Never seen one of those choke guns. Pretty sweet tool to have
Cool video Joe. I did this on electric circuits using a chiller in a can and chill transistors to determine fault. Great Job and Happy New Year!
Chiller in a can. Sounds like something I may purchase. for the times I don't have compressed air.
@@JoesAutoElectric You can use canned duster upside down to chill stuff too. I also use non chlorinated brake clean to remove rosin or heatsink paste from circuits.
Good strategy. Happy New Year
Like the video , always wanting to see how others approach the problem & what tools they use
That is a great diagnostic. Most of the shops in my town are nothing more than parts replacers---they would be lost on a diagnosis like that. They would've just replaced the injector because the computer said it was bad...but if it was a wiring problem or even a faulty driver in the ECM, they wouldn't find it
Get well soon joe! Godbless
I hope you have a smashing 2020 joe, more customers and less idiots would be nice :-D
Thanks for sharing that process. I'm dealing with an older Dodge that developed a misfire out of the blue. It was running great prior to that. I cannot find a mech who can trouble shoot it without a parts cannon.
Where are you located?
For anyone interested in the choke tester I am using, you may have trouble finding them. What they actually are is a Vortex tube. You can buy them here: amzn.to/361YnIZ
cool video joe, with that choke tester! I can see that coming in handy for a lot of different issues!
Michael Nicholson turned me on to this tool. I used other methods before, but this thing is very handy.
@@JoesAutoElectric Clever fella that Michael Nicholson bloke.
He knows a thing or two. lol
Had a newer Buick I think w GDI high pressure. Number 3 injector would leak when cold, but 99% straighten up when warm. That was fun to figure out....
Good use of an EXair cool gun to bring change the temp of a part while inthe system. The meter would also work being that the ohms changed ,but adding the use of a venturi effect cool gun, that was great teaching moment.Seeing cause and effect first hand.I wonder if they even teach this in schools anymore.i went to auto tech 40 years ago.they were just starting with variable venturi carbs when i graduated.and some elect ignitions stuff. You really do need to learn more technical stuff these days.
So true about info from client sad thing is that they use phrases like it's not catching or it has a hick up or it jumps with zero time frame. I remember this one time with a Ml Mercedes client said it was missing. Fast forward problem ended up being a bad tcm causing no shift and it bouncing off the Rev limiter. Cool video cool find cool tool. 😜
Yes, we have to be translators as well as all the other hats lol.
Nice fix , it can definitely throw someone for a loop when the injector is "in spec" when you test it .
For sure for sure!
Would love to see the currentramp as it went from ok to failing.
Good vid Joe. I appreciate what you are doing...
There was no ramp...it was open
@@JoesAutoElectric Ah. But it WAS running for a while until it got hot the next morning :)
Oh, so you are asking if my current ramp showed good while it was not misfiring? I didn't bother with current at that point because it was an obvious open when it failed.
All I get on tech worksheet is car runs "funny"
Me to service writer ( bosses wife )
" all the time ?
When cold or hot
Taking of from stoplight .
At idle
At random idle Does it come and go ???????
Service writer " I did not ask , does it matter ? :
Check brakes on technician work sheet.
Are they noisy ?
Pulsation ?
Just to know condition ?
Noise hot or cold ?
Squeal , grind , rough noise ?
Service writer "does it matter ? "
"
Ohh the struggles with the service writers
Classic example of nepotism. she sounds like an airhead on top of it
There are sheets you can download with questions like that on them. Perhaps a custom version with the shops name at the top and something like "In order to better service you vehicle, please look through this list and fill out as many items as you can pertaining to the problem that brought you here today". Same sort of thing doctors use.
Blazer02LS did this for my service advisor. Every time he doesn’t have the answer I yell at him lol
Choke tester sounds like the main component is a Ranque-Hilsch Vortex Tube. The astute machinist types in here could probably make one the rest of us are better going out and finding the one you use.
I am in process of machining one .
Industrial/machinist supply carry a cold air gun which is the same thing. Runs off shop air. Cold air out of one end , warm out the other. Used to keep milling cutters cool without the messy liquid.
Yes, a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube is the actual tool we are talking about. Check my link in pinned section.
great video Joe i know you didnt buy that choke tester new LOL happy 2020 i remember them used on actual chokes
Lol I am old enough, but you are right
Good job Joe, 👍 showing how temperature affects resistance especially on electrical injectors.
By the way I bought my choke tester in 1985 I love it!
How far are you from Paterson New Jersey?
Maybe half hour
Nice strategy . Joe check out the GTC 605 by GTC.ca , a Canadian Company . It's about $ 300.00 . I don't know if that flexible wand can go UNDER the intake plenum . They also make an ignition analyzer , the TA 500 . It may be able to get into tight spots and give you data quickly on COP , etc.
Thanks man, but I don't think it has any advantages over the pico
i still like Dodge! One of the few Port fuel injection vehicals
I like them. They make me money
If the issue isn't straight forward and the service advisor at our shop hasn't been able to capture relevant information from the customer, I pick up the phone and talk to the customer whilst I am working on their car.... One of the benefits of working at a small shop and being able to talk with the customer first hand and bypass the front desk. Our service adviser is fantastic for someone who has no experience on working on vehicles, she is methodical and picks up what a fault might be just by managing the jobs that come and go and doesn't get offended when I ask for a customer's number so I can speak to them directly.
Also, absolutely great demo of using a vortex tube aka choke tester
Good video. Thought you was going to remove the intake and find a critter that likes to dine on wiring insulation.
I am so happy that is not what happened.
I've changed spark plugs and coils yhinkimg that may have been my problem, but everytime I start my 2009 dodge journey and have it running fine, it just after a few minutes of driving, starts misfiring and eventually one of the cylinders stops.
I do have a code about the 02 sensor 1/2 heater circuit High... but the weird thing is that my vehicle ran fine for the 10,000km I put on er, and then one day limp mode. I got the crank sensor changed and it appeared to run perfect again until I was halfway home, and now this issue happens like clockwork. Tried seafoam in the tank hoping there was just something in the fuelline..but no luck. I should also mention i have a accelerator pedal posistion sensor 1/2 correlation code as well.
Again zero issues until now, the check engine light has been on since I bought it and I only paid $1500 and in 3months put 10,000km on er lol (for work) so I can't complain. It's be nice to solve this issue if possible tho, so at the very least I could have it due me until I find a replacement. Buddy who sold it to me thought the engine lightnwas just a faulty sensor problem because his scanner doesn't bring up any codes for it, it wasn't until I brought it to my buddy with a more expensive professional tool that did an in depth diagnostic that I learned of these codes. The acceleration has always seemed weak on it to me as well, but a 4cylinder dodge journey isn't known to have much torque to begin with so 🤷♂️ just super odd that one priblem was fixed and a new one arises. My only guess sis that the crank sensor needing replaced 2wice in a relatively short time, is a symptom of something else that is now giving me the misfire issue.
Yeah buddy from Aleskyfinis
Joe : I am not a tech , but if it would allow you to do the injector diagnosis without a wiring diagram , piercing wires and scope setup - that could be huge time saver . I don't know if that inductive wand can go under the intake plenum . Perhaps a discussion with their tech department . Same with their ignition analyzer . Since you have a following , maybe they could send a loaner for testing . Good Luck .l
Thank you.
Ciggrritts and car talk with Electric Joe

I was all out of Coffee lol
Joe's Auto Electric
Gotta quit dude, and quite honestly, I don’t feel sorry for anyone who puts that shit in their body.
I’ve witnessed first hand what path this habit can take someone and that’s all I’m gonna say. It’s a death sentence!!!!
I havent seen a choke tester since high school.
Another satisfied customer I'm sure.
indeed!
For cooling grab a can of canned air and use it upside down. It's nothing but refrigerant in an easy to hold can. Just don't spray yourself unless you like instant frostbite!!!
lol
Nice catch I've actually used ice before boss will utilize a freeze spray on injectors I've only seen this once before good catch
What tool is that the one for cooling the injector?
It is a choke tester, but the correct name for it is a vortex tube. Check my amazon store.
So is that the choke testers real use? Or is that what ya use it for? Looks like I’ll be doing some eBay searching
These were used to test carb chokes. At least they were sold as such. Michael Nicholson turned me on to these things. I had no idea they got that cold.
Man I’ve worked on many vehicle I’ve bought a 2010 dodge journey has a misfire I’ve checked the timing changed spark plugs, ignition coils, mass air sensor, crank sensor, cam sensors, still misfiring, PCM? Or bad fuel? Sits for a minute engine light gone rev it up back to flashing engine light p0300 drive it shutters pop it in neutral shut it off start it up again continue driving
Did you seal the puncture site?? This is where resistance starts.
Always
Joe you are A1!!
I would not have gotten paid to remove intake further .
I guess I would have to ohm out injector at pcm, cold the hot first .
Fair enough. Can do it that way, though I prefer going to the source, so there is no wiring that can potentially be an issue...if that makes sense...
Do a video about soy wiring, this coming year is the year of the rat and they LOVE to eat soy insulated wires.
I have pictures of a vehicle's wires that fury s.o.b loved!
HONDA makes e tape that resistant to rats. Expensive!!
@@alanmatthews5949 Petroleum based wires are rodent resistant.
Agree but soy based is cheaper and “greener”. Hahaha
@@alanmatthews5949 hahaha so are paper straws but it dont make it more efficient.
Do you think $80 an hour is a fair price for electrical diagnostics? I had my car in a shop to fix a 5 volt reference problem, and that was their rate.
That's cheap
@@JoesAutoElectric What's your average rate?
Ugh!!! I just paid 500$ today for all six spark plugs and three new coils for the back under the manifold. My error says coil 1 (not 5) so we just had all three changed cause the labor to get into the manifold, I did not know about the injector (45$) or I would of also had that replaced for the 01 location, so frustrated. Also had the Horn Switch replaced, another 550$ it had been the parasitic draw for years, making us replace several batteries and an alternator and would rarely ever start and had to take fused out cause that bad horn switch, the horn might go off anytime of day, like crazy, even with no key in the car at all. Can’t get rid of this crap car, we still owe $2,000 .
The diagnosis, that’s what your paying for, don’t guess......
Anyone Interested in the Tool it is actually called a Vortex Tube but they are Pricey I think I give close to 200 for mine.
Check my link above in the pinned section. Can be had for far less.
Keep in mind that potential and even current customers lie. They don't want to tell you they just got hacked for paying someone to put on a part and since then it runs like sh"t.
Yes, this is true. But any information you get can be useful. Even if you find later they lied, you know for next time.
the back story cust wont tell it.... so important in the diag they have to be picked...ok open in the injector...no pulse what happens when it shorts like down to 2 ohms remember the gm multechs
YES!!!!!!!
