Fujifilm X-T30 - Hands-On

  • For the cost of an iPhone, Fujifilm's X-T30 makes you feel like a pro photographer. The X-T30 arrived on the scene just 6 months after the flagship Fujifilm X-T3, and brings with it many of that camera's advanced specifications and features -- for hundreds of dollars less.
    At about $900 for the body only, or $1,000 with a basic kit lens, the X-T30 may leave some X-T3 customers wondering what they paid $1,500 for. After all, it has the same sensor, same processor, same autofocus system, and similar video capabilities, all wrapped up into an even smaller, lighter weight body.

    What camera are you using currently that you're really enjoying?

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen Před 5 lety +1

      My main system is Fuji, and I love my X-T2, but I'm looking forward to getting an S1 for adapting lenses with. I've waited a long time for a suitable and durable camera for that purpose (i.e. FF FOV) which I wouldn't feel the need to upgrade. (I'm tempted by the X-T30 as well, of course, but I try to skip a generation.)

      I’ve had the X-T30 since the Friday after release and am enjoying it very much. Walking around with the 16mm f/2.8 has been a ton of fun. My lil hands fit on it nicely too lol! All in all a wonderful shooting experience.

    Iv used the XT30 for my last 2 videos and have done 2 photoshoots and for video the F-LOG and Eterna LUT they provide has been a huge help with dynamic range! With my previous XE3 (same sensor as XT20) I had to use the film simulations which were great but still had a videoish look to them. I am also happy with the overall sharpness and detail I get as well.
    I hope to do a review video of my XT30 today and release it tomorrow.

    great review, thanks! I bought the xt30 yesterday after debating whether I should get the xt3 or 30. So I've used it for a day now and honestly, I'm returning is this afternoon. The grip is just terrible even for someone with small hands like me. It's uncomfortable to hold and changing the settings while shooting feels a bit awkward. I think the xt3 is definitely worth the extra money. However, the picture quality is stunning and if you're looking for a small travel camera or a B-camera for your xt2 or xt3, it's a win.

    I got 18-55 kit and the amount of settings is a bit overwhelming. Coming from Nikon D5100, it is a pretty smooth transition. Still need to read up on shooting video and find best settings for high quality quick travel shots with good dynamic range and minimal post production.

    • @DavenMathies
      @DavenMathies Před 5 lety

      Here's what I do for squeezing more DR out of the JPEGs: Turn highlights down by 2, turn shadows down by 1. This can be done within the quick menu and, honestly, it usually means I don't need to touch the RAW files - but for some situations, this makes the JPEGs look too muted, requiring contrast to be added back in post.

    Thanks for this great review. Have you tried the XT-30 on a Zhiyun Crane M or a Feiyutech G6 plus gimbal? I think since the XT-30 is taller, the gimbal arm might hit the top of the camera in low angle shooting. Also what do you think about the video shooting time limitation

    Well maybe just me but I still love to have some weight and grip for my camera so I went with the XT-3 which offers a solid but far from heavy weight and better grip. Not to mention the specs are higher too! Love my XT-3! For those who wish to jump ship to Fuji, rest assured you'll never regret, the signature JPEG colours that doesn't need editing to look nice and a true camera unique feel you get from Fuji is distinctive and exclusive. Coming from a ex-Canon user for 4 years.

    What kind of lenses did you use when you talked about the missing in-body-stabilization? Did they have OIS? If so I would be a bit disappointed that good OIS lenses can't compensate a missing IBS. And does a gimbal do a better job than OIS?

      Thank you! You know, I didn't actually test any video at f/1.4 -- this video is shot on the 35mm f/1.4R, but mostly at f/2.8. It was pretty spot on there, at lest for a nonmoving subject -- it's a little slow to keep up with a moving subject, but you can probably customize the AF settings to make it perform better here. For still photography, it worked great at f/1.4.

    I'm little bit concerned about the lens choice for Fuji x series, they are expensive. Which lenses would you recommend for beginner film makers?

    • @DavenMathies
      @DavenMathies Před 5 lety +1

      In general, I would recommend their f/2 or f/2.8 primes for more budget-friendly options. The 16mm f/2.8, 23mm f/2, 35mm f/2, and 50mm f/2 are all in the $399-$449 range. The choice is a little harder if it's specific to filmmaking, however, because it depends on how you're going to use it. I shoot all these review videos with primes, but every shot is either on a tripod, slider, or gimbal. If you need optical image stabilization, the 18-55mm f/2.8-4 is quite good, but is more expensive at $699 (or get it in a kit for some savings). I've also used the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ($899) for video and actually really liked it, too.

      it's exactly reason I can't decide to buy X-T30. 18-55 is decent (big plus) but what next ? Primes 23 or 35 are not so good, 50 is very nice. But what about longer zoom or macro lens ? Everything is not so good or very expensive. And Fuji is isolated so no third party lenses like Sigma or Tamron can be used.

    Went to the Fujifilm store with cash to buy the Fujifilm xt30 but returned without it
    Why?
    1) The electronic viewfinder is BAD...blurry and grainy.
    2) There is lot of lag if you move the camera viewing through the EVF
    3) Its too small for even medium sized ladies hands
    4) You are bound to click on the buttons on the back accidentally.
    5) The diopter correction dial is too small to use
    6) It was a total disappointment for me
