  • New to Texas?
Welcome to the Lone Star State. You have 30 days from the time you move here to register your vehicle in the state. To learn how, follow the steps below. In no time at all, we will be proud to call you a Registered Texan!
Here are the steps to becoming a Registered Texan:
    1. Vehicle Inspection and Insurance
Have your vehicle inspected. Simply take your vehicle to a certified Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) inspection station. Many mechanic shops, oil change locations and service stations are certified by DPS as inspection stations. Bring your insurance card.
In Texas, you must show you have insurance coverage for a minimum of $30,000 per injured person, up to a total of $60,000 for everyone injured in an accident, and $25,000 for property damage.
    2. Registration
Next, it's time to get your vehicle registration sticker and license plates. To do this, you must visit your local county tax-assessor collector office. You will need your insurance card, proof of vehicle inspection (the Vehicle Inspection Report from the inspection station), and proof you own the vehicle, such as the registration or title from your previous state. You can also show a current foreign/military ownership document or foreign evidence of ownership. Please note that if your insurance policy was issued in another state, you will need to bring your policy in its entirety so that insurance coverage minimums may be verified.
Visit your local county tax office. You are not required to title your vehicle in Texas, but first-time registrants must fill out and complete Form 130-U.
    Form 130-U
The base registration fee in Texas is $50.75 plus $1 for TexasSure, the electronic insurance verification program and other Department of Public Safety initiatives. So, total state registration is $51.75 but counties may add other fees to this cost. The state portion of your vehicle's inspection fee will be due at this time. As a new resident, you also will pay sales tax-related fees required by the state's Comptroller of Public Accounts. Sales tax fees on a vehicle can be $90 or the difference between your previous state's sales tax and the Texas sales tax.
While at the county tax assessor-collector's office be sure to ask your customer service representative to sign you up for eReminder. We'll email you when it's time to renew, and you will have the opportunity to renew your registration online.
Note: Active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces and non-resident, full-time students attending a Texas college or university are not required to register or title their vehicles in Texas.

I used a broker and they are in new jersey and im from texas. I bought a car from copart thru them and received a new jersey title. This is my first time ever selling a car and im confused because the new jersey title i received only has 1 spot for the buyer to sign and only 1 spot for the seller to sign. Unlike the texas title which has several spaces to record the buying and selling of the cars lifetime. How would i go about the title once i have a seller. So i need to register the car in texas before i can sell it do i have to turn the new jersey title into a texas title first? And by doing that do i still have to get insurance and inspected if i plan to sell the vehicle anyways? Any help is much appreciated

I know it’ll take another 20 days for title to arrive to my address after I arrive in Texas and I take all the paperwork to the DMV/DPS or whatever they call it. Is there a way to do this process completely online in order to avoid waiting those 20 days to put my vehicle up on marketplace in Texas. Please get back to me to elaborate more on this particular situation. Thanks🙏

You do not have to transfer your title or evidence of ownership. I you do want transfer to a Texas title it is free when you register but if you come back later to change it it will cost an extra 33.00 and they don't tell you that always at registration.

I have a question! I dont know if you may have the answer... so the scenario is... I am born and raised in Texas and have a registered vehicle in Texas in my name, but I also have a vehicle that I bought while living in New York and is registered in the state of New York, therefore i have two vehicles, a Texas car and a New York car!! So now the question... so if I sold my Texas vehicle and keep the plates, can i use those plates for when i register my New York car in Texas? or would i have to get new plates for the New York car or what up.... Thanks for your insights!

    • @HidalgoMotorsCo
      @HidalgoMotorsCo  Před 3 lety

Okay.. first of all thanks so much for watching! Second.. to answer your question... you will need to get new plates because your texas car plates are registered to that car specifically... so when you register your New York car in texas, the state will issue new plates to you. So your old plates will be useless.. hope that answers your questions. Long story short. No you cannot. Once again thanks for watching and let me know if you have any more questions

Excellent question. First pay the vehicle off. Get the out of state title. And have your dad give you a power of attorney to transfer ownership of title. Or a form called “right of possession” and go to the courthouse and get it changed. Of course with the criteria required - inspection receipt, proof of ownership (insurance, title, etc) and drivers license or ID. But if you have any more questions I’d strongly suggest you contact a title service for professional help haha let the pros handle it

Congratulations on your free car haha but to answer your question, Have him send you the title (if you don’t have it already) and be sure to get a texas vehicle inspection from any certified shop. Then locate a title service near you (due to the virus now, only title companies are allowed to go and drop titles off. most DMVs are closed to the public.) and within a short period of time, you should have your hard plates and registration sticker (blue) the title will be mailed to you by the DMV and can take up to 30 days to get since everyone is moving so slow and the DMVs are short staffed!!
