    Wow, that looks fantastic! Great job. Thanks for the shout out too! I think yours ended up looking much cleaner than mine too. For what it's worth though, I don't think a dremel would have given you a cleaner result but it would likely have made it a bit easier. One thing that's worth noting is that even though the mod uses a four pin headphone jack, the console will not work with four pin headphones. At least, mine doesn't unless they are half inserted and then you only get mono sound out of one side.

      @TimdeVille Před 4 lety +1

      Hey makho, this is putting me off trying this mod. Any ideas as to how this can be solved to work with all headphones? Most have a mic on the cable now and 4 pins. Don’t want to have to carry special headphones for my sp

    • @makho
      @makho Před 4 lety +2

      @@TimdeVille You'd need a physical switch to detect headphones. That's all the fourth pin does in this implementation. By inserting a three pin TRS plug in the four pin TRRS jack, we are triggering the speaker cutoff by shorting the fourth pin (the ground) to the third pin (also the ground in TRS but the microphone in TRRS). Alternatively, you can use a TRRS splitter and just leave the microphone plug dangling but I understand not wanting to use a dongle.
      If you cannot find a suitable contact switch (and I couldn't but I didn't look *that* hard) that depresses automatically when headphones are inserted, a simple SPST switch that you toggle manually would work too.

    • @TimdeVille
      @TimdeVille Před 4 lety

      makho cool. Thanks for the reply. I’m new to all this do I’ll have to do some searching. I don’t even know what a SPST switch is so I’ll look it up but would be amazing to use any headphones. Are you ok just using 3 pin headphones then?

    • @chamoo232
      @chamoo232 Před 4 lety +25

      The Micro doesn't have a link port or the little switch in the cartridge slot that tells the GBA when a GB or GBC game is inserted so even if it has a headphone jack it still sacrificed other stuff. Nintendo could have made extra space in the SP for a headphone jack but they just didn't care enough to do it. And it was extra money for them from people who bough the dongle that cost pennies to make.

    That placement is way better than mine lol. I have mine near the right trigger and can't use both effectively at the same time. I also soldered all my connections on the charging pins.

    With my pair of in-ear headphones (bought in around 2008/2009) with a built in double connector.
    One classic 3.5 mm jack and the Game Boy Advance SP dedicated "audio connector".

    Ninty definitely made a mistake not adding this to the original. To their credit they rectified it on all following devices.

    I mean, I understand. The circuit board’s layout required you to insert a bunch of wires to mod it. Nintendo meanwhile probably wouldn’t want a mess of wires inside that thing, but in order to avoid that, they’d need to completely redesign the circuit board’s layout. I’m sure this is a really flimsy excuse for nintendo not adding it, but it’s probably the best I can come up with :/

    Elliot, you need to give some love to the Koss KPH30i Headphones. Best headphones for under $40USD that sounds like they cost around $200ishUSD. They've also got a retro look too! Would pair well with your channel as a prop/ daily driver. Get the Yaxi Pads for them too! Z Reviews is the review to look at if you want to know more as well!

    Your headphones have a relatively thin jacket on the plug. Most headphones back then had huge jackets and it would stick out beyond the side of the gameboy or not fit when other carts were sticking out from the slot. Lots of room for leverage to break the case or socket. It's not right that they didn't have a socket on the device, but this is one place where it makes sense.

    The bigger question is: Why do you not have a dremel already? They are awesome, especially for IPS and AGS-101 mods. In some of your videos you spent houres cutting the shell, which would be done in 5 min. with a Dremel. Also considering how many mods you have done and probably will do it is a really good investment!

    It looks great!! A recommendation i would make is to use some type of plastic putty to fill in the gaps maybe epoxy and add some pigments.
    Also i know this sounds a bit weird but would you ever consider giving us a tutorial to change a weird charger to a somewhat more accessible one? Like using the charger of your phone to give back life to your old ds or something. Love your vids and thank you for caring enough to continue posting content. I know its your job but it honestly makes me happy to see creators actually taking everything up a notch just because lots of us are on our homes. Take care

    You might want headphone speakers with a right angle jack if you plan to use an e-Reader or other bulky peripheral with the headphone jack mounted in this way.

    Just a suggestion, you can put a plug-to-plug 3.5mm audio cable to connect to your laptop or recorder and show us the final sound result with the mod.

  • @silversonic1
    @silversonic1 Před 4 lety

    I think the real reason they didn't put in a traditional headphone jack was because back then they didn't have an adequate solution for charging, so they overcomplicated things by merging the two together, however not in the same way the iPod Shuffle did because that method didn't exist yet.
    Plus Nintendo doesn't like using other people's patents all that much.
